She passed away within the year after this recording, she never received any recognition until years after her passing. This 2 night small club gig recording is the only live video of her performing this version.

Totally agreed, but have you heard her sing "Blues in the Night"? Holy cow... if you want to hear her vocal range, and in a completely different style, check that one out. I already knew she was incredibly talented, but this song shows just how versatile she was too. If you search for it here on YT, listen to the one that looks like an album cover with her sitting in a chair, guitar in hand, looking out the window.

I'm just blown away by the late Eva's incredible cover of this iconic song from Wizard of Oz, originally sung by Judy Garland, and I believe if Judy had heard Eva's version, she'd have been blown away by it too. God rest both angels. 💔 💔

We are so lucky to have this recording, Eva was a wonderful singer lost to cancer far too soon. She paid for this recording out of her own pocket to be done over 2 nights but the 1st night's recordings had a bad buzz and were unusable. Cover charge to see her back then most nights was $3. Wow! Check out her cover of Sting's 'Fields of Gold' , when Sting heard it he changed how he preformed the song to her arrangement, high praise indeed!

I am one if the ones who asked you to comment.
Thank you so much for sharing.
    She was a true original.
Please check out more of her covers at Blues Alley.
She was truly a generational talent.
Passed from melanoma cancer at age 33 in 1996 exactly 10 months after her sets at Blues Alley.
She also sang blues and jazz like Stormy Monday etc.
    Thanks again.

She was truly gifted and wrote this arrangement. She had her own style and sang with some of the best jazz artists of our time. My personal favorites of hers are, "Imagine" and "What a Wonderful World". Wonderful World was the very last song she performed about a week before she passed. Even if you don't react to them, they are worth the time to listen to them. Thank you so much for everything you do! I'll keep watching when I'm not working!

That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.

Eva Cassidy was so incredible what a voice and talent. It was such a tragedy and loss to the world when she died of cancer at only 33 years old in 1996, but her music will forever live on. Some other Eva Cassidy recommendations are Danny Boy, Time After Time, Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, Songbird. Thank you for your reaction.

Yo, Shon, when I saw just now that you were reactiing to this, I stopped everything and had to watch and listen with you. You are one of my favorite people to sit in and share these experiences with. There is just something about your honestly, humility, innate knowledge of yourself and the messages and mechanics of music. You're a super cool dude and someone I'd want to hang out with.
Now, as you revisit this song performance in the future, watch her eyes, her body language, the investment in the message - and - the delicate guitar work. She is not just performing a techniclally brilliant and simplistic version, but she, I feel is truly singing and playing from the very depths of her heart. She CARES about what the lyrics are telling and showing and feeling. I can only praise Jesus that you have found Eva (ee-va - not a-va). She has some really beautiful performances of some iconic songs. And, she was not a 'sell-out'. So many 'artists' sell out for fame and fortune. But, Eva told industry execs where they could put their promises of fame and fortune because she was not going to be shaped and massaged into a product. She refused to sign any contract because she valued the music and message more than the money.
Eva died shortly after this live performance. She had this little concert knowing her time was short, having been diagnosed with a terminal illness just months before. She became famous after her death, like many sincere artists have over the last 2,000 years.
I think you would like and appreciate her rendition of Sting's (The Police) song, "Fields of Gold". Eva is and was a treasure.
One final thing, if I may...I haven't yet looked into your catalog to see if you have reacted to Tom Jones' smash performance of "I'll Never Fall In Love (Again)". If you have not, please do visit the live television performance from 1967. I belieive it was on Dusty Springfields' variety show. Not sure. It's a black and white. And, if I may further, he totally and absolutely gives a lesson in performance and interpretation. We'll talk more about that later.
I would encourage you to have your singing friends listen, watch, and take notes to both Eva and Tom.
Peace and Love and Mercy to you, sir. Have yourself a super-terrific weekend, dude!!
    eric

She died from melanoma -skin cancer. So sad. From what I understand, she had a suspicious spot like a mole that was malignant. Unfortunately she missed an appointment with the doctor and the cancer spread throughout her body.
Yes this recording was close to her passing. I believe she didn’t think it was good because she was playing while on medication.
Please everyone take care of your health. Watch your skin too.
And to cancer I have nothing nice to say to you.
