You mentioned that she sang like it was the last time she was going to sing, sadly that was pretty much true. I read about a record exec.that passed on her, but then deeply regretted his decision. I keep coming back to the idea of how dedicated she was to her dream, and it was just beyond her grasp, only to flower after her passing from cancer.
I cannot listen to Eva without tears welling up. F#*k cancer.
Every time
@@alonzovillarreal4666 Yes, everytime.
Same here.
Sitting here with tears rolling down my face now! Hit especially hard when he said that she sang it like it was the last song she was ever gonna sing…😢
@24471lola I agree. I have often wondered if deep in her soul she knew the trials she was to face. The only way to sing that particular song the way she did is to bring it straight from the soul and spirit.
"Autumn Leaves", "Fields of Gold", "Songbird"
People Get Ready too!
Wade in the water.
@kestrelle5345 Spot on!
Have you heard her sing "Blues in the Night"? If you want to hear a dramatically different sound from her, check that one out. It also shows what an *insane* vocal range she had. It's a cover of an old song (originally from 1941). She was amazing, and so versatile.
Her rendition of ‘ I know you by Heart’ was the song I chose for my husbands funeral, the words described our lives exactly ❤
She is still a gift to us all. Her version of Songbird and Fields of Gold are stunning!
And Autumn Leaves and Imagine and …
@@ericsicard910 you read my mind!
Also People get ready
I can’t make it through Fields of Gold without ugly crying
You have good taste 😀
RIP Eva Cassidy ... These were recorded/filmed shortly before the Cancer took her. She brought so much joy ti so many! I pray she is in heaven! BTW, you are very familiar with this song as sung by Judy Garland, but this IS Eva Cassidy's arrangement. Amazing!!!
So sad she didn’t get to see her own success 😢
@@rifki9055True. But I don’t think Eva defined success the way the rest of us usually do.
Loved her improvised melody lines!!! ❤️🌹❤️
She unfortunately died from skin cancer melanoma at 31 or 33
That whole album is beyond beautiful and wonderful
Love your work here
She had a cold when she made this recording. RIP Eva.....a beautiful voice and such beautiful guitar playing. She died about 8 months after this. Such a loss!
10 month to be more precise. This was recorded early January 1996 and she died in November of the same year.
Eva Cassidy did it her way! Refused to sign with labels and loose control of her amazing gift and choosing songs she could pour her soul into. Such a loss, grateful for these recordings 🤩
It's hard to believe when I hear someone say they've never heard this song before. I keep forgetting we're not in Kansas any more.
Right. so neither Polo or his son has seen that piece of Americana, the movie The Wizard of Oz. I thought every child would have seen it. Geez, we saw it so often. Annually I suppose
@@AjaxCaperPolo is my kids age. Both of my girls, not only have seen the Wizard Of Oz more times than they could count, both sing this song so beautifully and own the movie on VHS and Blu-ray DVD.
She doesn’t have to try to blow the doors off of everything she can hit. She has a range of emotions and timbres as well as vibrato she adds to everything she did. She can bring a gangsta to tears.
Just did bring the tears to me…and I’ve heard her sing this dozens of times. Unbelievable.
Maybe thee most clear, clean voice ever.
Every time I hear her sing this the emotions overcome me, every time. This is my favorite version of this song. Thank you for the reaction. You should listen to her cover of Sting’s “Fields of Gold”.
Yep, Fields Of Gold is PHENOMENAL 🙏💕🙏
In spite being a Sting fan and buying that CD, I didn't even like that song. Until hearing Eva Cassidy's version. I heard that Sting took it to his manager (somebody like that) and insisted he hear her sing it, as she blew him away.
Best cover ever of Fields of Gold.
Went to high school with Eva. Her range was extraordinary. AND she had control over every note. Every run. Every inflection. No voice lessons. She is the gold standard. Please listen to her songs with Chuck Brown...a DC legend. Cheers Polo.
@AnonymousServant513 Just thought you might be interested to know there will be a tribute to her and Chuck and other DC music legends August 17 at the Strathmore. (I’m guessing you’re in the DC area.)
Breathtaking
I did not know this and yes i am. Thanks! @@gidneyandcloyd
@@gidneyandcloyd got my tickets....very fun....Nighthawks too. 😉 wykyk
Part of the charm in this rendition of this particular song is that it's one of the most popular songs in the world but what this special lady does with it in her own, Eva Cassidy like way is just fantastic.
So knowing it before hand would have been even more special, I think.
RIP Eva.
You were ONE of a kind!
She transformed a simple and familiar song into something unexpected, transcendent and oh so beautiful. Mere words can never do her justice, so I just send my heartfelt gratitude out past where the bluebirds fly...
Therapy when you are disillusioned with life ..her voice
Eva was such a beautiful soul with the voice of an angel. Every time I see this I tear up. She was taken from us way too early and the world is a lesser place without her in it. Rest in peace Eva.
Eva Cassidy's covers were often better than the original artists' versions.
Sting was so impressed with Fields of Gold he admitted it was her signature.
I've said the same.
Whoever suggested this to you has great taste in music. She was simply phenomenal!
If you've seen classic film The Wizard of Oz, you know this song. Judy Garland sang it first, it's been covered by ev-er-y-one. This is my favorite version.
I cannot hold the tears back when I hear her sing…Songbird…I sob. One of those Souls were just too good to be on this planet. So God brought her home…wear there are no tears or sadness…
She didn’t go silently into that darkness of her sad condition but brought such a hopeful not hopeless outlook in her rendition of this song.A truely, beautiful Rose of a Woman.
Eva died at age 33 from melanoma cancer unfortunately 😢
She was music... Only good died young...😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@williamthelast1 - would you have said that to Sir Nicholas Winton's face?
She worked at a plant nursery, very physical work. I think she spent every dime she had to make these recordings. The world discovered her too late. Huge loss.
I cannot listen to this without tearing up. It is the most poignant sweetly sad version of this song.. RIP.
“Fields of Gold” is a beautiful song by Eva. Also, more of spiritual or Gospel: “How Can I Keep From Singing?”
"How Can I Keep From Singing" shows Eva's gospel chops. Man, I love that song and her version of it. Makes me feel alive.
A friend of mine, an avowed atheist, told me that hearing her sing it almost converted him to Christianity. 😇
This is the only only gospel song I can play on repeat :) love it and love Eva
And her version of autumn leaves gives me goosebumps every time ❤
Never heard of this voice, but rip beautiful person
She had such a beautiful voice.
Dive headlong into her catalog, Polo. She is a diamond in the ruff. Had she lived, her talent would have broken through and she'd be far more known than she is today. Sadly, that was not to be. If you only listened to the album ("Live at Blues Alley") that came from this multi-evening series of shows, it shows you everything she has in her capability.
Eva was a gift to all of us
That’s exactly what happened to me I literally stopped what I was doing to listen to an angel on earth. RIP
I love Songbird
Great song
It was, indeed, almost the last song she ever sung.
It is a privilege to enter the unique world of Eva Cassidy, even for just a few minutes. Thank you, Polo 🙂
Her contribution to music should never be forgotten RIP
Listening to her cover of " Fields of Gold " is like hearing an angel sing!! She actually became well known after her death when a song of hers was played by a disc jockey overseas and wound up charting!!
It was Terry Wogan, a radio and TV presenter. Played this on Radio 2, been a fan ever since
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
Oh, I love his version just as much. Hope POLO will listen to it, too. Here is a link to the official video. th-cam.com/video/V1bFr2SWP1I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IfjDDPRJPXVHY6B9
Tennessee Waltz is also a beautiful example of her wonderful voice ❤
This was filmed at Blues Alley in D.C. Eva also did some songs with Chuck Brown - The God Father of Go Go😀
I found Eva Cassidy long ago. Loved her music so much that I wondered why she hadn’t signed with a major label. I was Extremely saddened to learn that she was no longer alive. What a voice.
I can't listen to this song without crying. What a beautiful and talented person she was. I have probably all of her cd's. But this song, makes me cry every time. RIP Eva. You left us too early.
Eva Cassidy was well loved in her DMV home. I was gifted with her music often while driving a cab in DC/Northern Va, listening to local WPFW FM 89.3, Jazz and Justice Radio ❤️
@Beachwalk5178 I was listening to WPFW one day when I heard the most beautiful voice I’d ever heard coming out of my stereo’s speakers. I couldn’t wait to find out who it was. When the song was over, I learned that it was Eva Cassidy...and that there was going to be a benefit concert to defray her medical expenses. She was already on her way out.
I was in a shop the first time I heard Eva Cassidy and I did stop what I was doing and say, 'who the hell was that?' I think she already had one foot in heaven.
I was on hold on the phone, calling my bank and heard her song 'songbird' and immediately grabbed my phone to record the song and searched and found her. What a voice, she had my attention immediately! I have every single album and they are always in my playlist :)
I've been an Eva fan for years, that song still bring me to tears. She sang in clubs around Washington DC but no major record contract, she died in 1996 of cancer and around 1998 a BBC Radio 2 producer was sent a tape, it blew his mind. He sent it to the biggest DJ on Radio 2, Terry Wogan who played it every day for a few weeks. That's when I heard it and myself with thousands of other Brits loved it. A CD Songbiird sold in thousands in the UK and eventually the USA realised what a gem they had not noticed themselves.
Her family allowed recordings she made to be released, I have several CD's of her songs, she was an angel.
What made it so special for Terry was that she had irish blood in her, brilliant singer.
Autumn Leaves is another gorgeous song, written by the famous songwriter Johnny Mercer.
Her producer and one time boyfriend said Eva first sang this to him while driving..no guitar just her voice. He said he got so emotional that he had to pull the car over. there is a very well done documentary on TH-cam that is I think was done by 20/20 a few years after her death
RIP Eva❤
I've listened to Eve cassidy for years. Her voice is like an Angel.RIP sweet lady ❤
When people say the words "voice of an angel", this is what they mean. She really could make a hard man cry, even more so knowing that she was taken so young and never reached her true potential.
she was amazing she knew the guitar as well as her voice
Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac owns one of the bars she did some of her recordings at. He tried to get her signed by ANYBODY. Her music finally took off after she died. Her version of Stormy Monday is FANTASTIC!!
You described her performance of this song perfectly, it is beyond beautiful, and one of my favorite songs since i was a kid 🩷
I recently discovered Eva Cassidy just a handful of years ago. Some girl on The Voice in the UK covered one of her songs as an opening, and the girl sang like an absolute angel. Her name is Molly Hocking and she ended up winning that season. There is a condensed version that just covers the songs she did throughout the competition, it's about 14 minutes long, but some of the most gifted talent of anyone I can remember seeing. Definitely worth a watch.
She had a short time with us but made a real impact in that time. It was our loss when she died.
Polo!!! I bought you a coffee a couple weeks back reccommending you check out Eva Cassidy. I'm not sure if it was me or someone else who convinced you, but I am so glad you did this reaction and loved her just like I do. Her blues/soul songs are also amazing and hit completely different. "People Get Ready", "Songbird", "Fields of Gold", and "Autumn Leaves" are some of my other favorites.
and God said, "I send my child Eva to sing for you . . . . . . . . "
😭 gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME. I had goosebumps on my face😆🥰
Gone so young but left her mark right into our souls
Eva's version of Sting's "Fields of Gold"... I get chills... There is an album she did LIVE but I can't remember the name, Live at Blues Alley? or something like that. It's amazing...
Just ❤her sound.
Welcome to the Eva rabbit hole my friend. If you want a true measure of her gift and the range of it - Play Blues in The Night followed by Autumn Leaves. It’s nuts.
The perfect two songs to showcase how versatile of a vocalist she was. I was shocked by "Blues in the Night", in a very good way. Super impressive.
One of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard!
Oh! The whole album is so unbelievably gorgeous. Every note, pure bliss. A lot of people pick over the rainbow, but my favourite is, and always will be “Songbird” that shares its name with the title of the album. Equally beautiful as heartbreaking.
Her version of Fever. I used that to test high end audio equipment back in the day. Worth the listen!
Pure.
Yes - goosebumps.
Titles of some of her other songs are eluding me but I have 3or 4 of her cd’s and they are all wonderful so do check out more Eva ❤️😊✌️
I had never heard her before but I'm thankful to hear her now. Her voice reminds me of the great Roberta Flack singing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
Stormy Monday is remarkable as well.
Eva left us way to early, some of my favorites are nightbird, people get ready, songbird. Unbelievable talent.
For a different take on Eva's incredible voice and as a complete contrast, listen to Stormy Monday Blues, from the same gig. She nearly takes the roof off the place, it is sensational.
Thank you for this, I had never heard of Eva Cassidy.
Polo I’ve been waiting for you to discover Eva Cassidy! Please keep exploring her extensive gifts. Versatility. Passion. Pure, raw talent. “Ain’t doin too bad” . Sparkling blues🎉
As many comments highlighted, she died young and shortly after this recording.
She was unknown then outside of DC area.
She was only discovered 5 years later in the UK when this song was played on the BBC.
It became viral, 5 albums were released and she cumulated posthumously 10+ millions records sales
If you have seen “The Wizard of Oz” movie then you have heard this song though the arrangement and melody has been changed somewhat to Eva’s style.
Oh Eva… I was hoping so incredibly she would come across your path… Fields of Gold. Please.
Her cover of Gordon Lightfoots “early morning rain”
Is one of my favorites.
She was just a gorgeous talent
POLO! Roll those windows down my friend. Let the whole world rejoice at the sound emanating from your 4Runner. Don't be ashamed or fearful. Live intentionally, and God bless you.
I cry every time I hear her sing this. Gone too soon. Nice reaction Polo. ❤
I have lived in the DC area for decades. Many times I would hear or see people mention Eva Cassidy and her voice. I was skeptical .... that's who I am. I finally listened to her music in the last year and I immediately understood why she had been receiving all these praises - sadly posthumously - for many years. FYI Blues Alley - where this was recorded is an iconic venue. So many of the greats have played there
Why oh why do the one of kind voices get taken too soon? They exist somewhere over the rainbow. One in a billion.
My favorite female singer of all time. Thank you.
Never heard her singing this song, I had to try hard to hold my tears inside.
Stormy Monday and Autumn Leaves will leave you speechless. About damn time you got around to her😉
Listening to acoustic guitar & her beautiful voice... just learning she has passed. It's such a shame. My departed husband loved the Hawaiian guy's arrangement. 😢
Danny Boy is very good as well, and her version of Simon and Garfunkel bridge over troubled water
the amazing thing about this engagement was that she had a bad cold. so this is a great rabbit hole to dive into because listening to her in full voice will give probably give you goose bumps.
Eva worked in her mother’s plant nursery during the week. She sang on the weekends. She always thanked the band for letting her sing with them. The band couldn’t get Eva to understand that the people were coming to see her. Her untimely passing was a tragic loss to the heart and soul of music.
What a beautiful voice!
Can't listen to this without weeping.....so BEAUTIFUL....and, such a TRAGEDY to loose her: SO YOUNG!! Hugs, Polo!!
What a voice. I’m not super familiar with this artist but own a few of her songs. My favorite is Drowning in the Sea of Love.
So beautiful! 🥰
The wizard of oz ❤ I love rainbow s 💖 peace ✌️ Polo...
What an amazing talent she was. You should check out "Autumn Leaves" next. It's the same set up, but with a little bit of piano added.
man, someone should have warned you...That entire dvd/cd is Amazing!
discovered her recently and she is "smooth" a real gem
RIP Eva. And her voice - one in a billion! And she still got gas in left in the tank. Listen to Oh Had I a Golden Thread. Astonishing!
Fields of Gold, Danny Boy, Autumn Leaves. And, you need to watch the movie "The Wizard of Oz."
This was on a camcorder from the 90’s no less and it’s freakin beautiful still!! What a God given voice ❤❤❤
Fantastic, you got to fall in love with her during this performance, amazing
Recorded at Blues Alley in Washington DC area. Live album..great album. Man you could hear a pin drop
Pure and transparent. The wonder in your expression said it all.
