It is so rare to find a TH-cam photography channel offering real information on the job side of things. Can't believe I just found you, but very grateful 🔥
Thank you so much for all this information and inspiration! 3 questions: 1.) If two magazines get back to you saying they want your story do you send the same one to both, choose one magazine to submit to, or write different versions for each magazine? 2.) Do you write a blurb, wait for acceptance then write the story. Or write the whole thing straight away 3.) What is a good market rate for travel stories/photos? Thanks so much and keep on doing what you do 😊👍🏼
I've been following your vids for awhile now, and honestly you are the first one that REALLY explained the business side of it, so I could actually do it...I haven't yet...mainly because I'm still working on finding my niche and building a portfolio before I pitch anyone...but thank you for the VLOGs and articles...it has helped me decide what I want to do.
At 9:31 you really captured some great waterfall video. I'm sure it wasn't easy avoiding crowds and people for some of those shots. Also, you tell a great story...keep up the great work! Impressed...I know it's work! You make it look easy... Nicely done!
Planning a shoot has really helped me to focus on what I want to achieve and the settings, positions I need to use. My images are improving through this process.
I’m so glad you made this video. I’m hitting 11 countries this year and it’s good to know that submitting work after the trip is a good way to go. I probably would’ve drove myself crazy trying to do all the work from the road.
Hi from your photo shooting buddy on the Elephant Mountain (Xiang Shan). I love your pictures of CKS Memorial Hall (Freedom square?!? they call it now?), especially 'cause I know how difficult weather and light were. Since I whitnessed how you recorded part of your video, I am amazed what you made out of it and the plannig that all the cuts must have taken. On they point and relevant from first to last minute. All the best for you and may you crack the 200k followers soon!
Thanks for the advice and inspiration Brendan - I've been waiting for a video like this! I have a load of images from my 4 trips to Japan, so I think I'll give it a go! Sure, rejection will be tough, but there's nothing to lose in trying! So Taipei is like Japan? Hmmm, might have to go there someday! :)
Thanks for this very informative step-by-step guide to selling our work to magazines and newspapers! Many people can benefit from this. Good luck on your submissions!
Great video with such good info man. You are absolutely right about shooting a hero shot, followed by the details. I’ve sold some photos to magazines and every time it’s with an article I’ve written. A photo essay with several different types of shots and shooting with a purpose is huge. I love these types of videos!
Thanks, these videos certainly help bring focus to what I should be doing. Honestly I've been doing this kind of work for the military for a decade, but the marketing has always been done for me. This will give me the chance to get doing this on my own.
Great video and very interesting. By the way I loved the article you did for The Star travelling on the boat and attempting to string your hammock. Just makes you want to experience it for yourself, or not...
I really love the new format, it really suits you. About property releases-how does it work with these locations? Alamy keeps asking me for them. Cheers!
Brendan awesome stuff, the meat and potatoes.. Is it possible for you to link a couple of the stores/photos that went to publication, that we could look at it for better understanding of the final product?
I do! I honestly would love to be a travel photographer. Though rejection is a major part of the game, the effort and the experience I would gain from building the material to pitch is enough to motivate me to try. I've much to learn but that's the fun of it all. Thanks for the video and the information.
Hi Brendan. Thanks for cool vids. You never mentioned how much posprocessing you yould do, and example of what descriptions/story should we write. Thanks
Hey Brendan, I enjoyed the video, however, I'm wondering do you shoot stills and video at the same time or do you set up multiple cameras for each purpose: still and videos? What is your process? Thanks
Love this video! Really useful to have someone like you walk through the entire process. I wanted to know if you have any tips for getting good content to write about to surround the image with. Even when writing an Instagram caption, I find myself wishing that I had talked to people there and asked more questions that I could write about to describe the image. Do you have any tips on getting the interesting nuggets of information to write better in the article?
Hello ~Taipei ~Taiwan~^^.....it's a bit hard to concentrate when the local foods show up, because it reminds me all sorts of different street foods and night-markets in Taiwan.
Interesting video, have you a link to an article you've sold to a magazine or something? I'm sure the pictures will be great I'm just keen to see the written article.
I would never want to become a travel photographer - I hate traveling … ;-) But your tips are true for nearly every area of photography. This was a very interesting video to watch!
Hi, thank you very much for this video, it concludes very helpful information, what about these reasons of rejection like intellectual properties, people and signs on the streets, do we have to carry with tons of papers and ask every body agree to sign that we can use the image in magazines and stock photograph? Please tell me how you deal with this issue. Thank you.
That was a very helpful video. How do you deal with multiple approvals? Can your story be published in different publications? Do you tell the publications that you submitted your story to others? thank you for any advice.
Depends on the publication. Most will ask for "first publication rights" with a deal that you won't sell the story for 6 months after. Some don't care, some all for exclusivity.
Got a question about pitching... do you pitch that same story to various magazines at once? If so, what happens if you get two that accept your article/ photos? Is it ok to have the same story/ photos in two separate magazines or do you have to give that story out exclusively? Hope my question makes sense
I used to pitch the same story to multiple places, yes. And, if 2 editors came back I'd say "sorry, that piece was taken. But, we can do something similar". Usually magazines have a "first to publish" clause. And they usually ask for exclusivity on the content for a certain period of time - usually 6 months. So, you can work around that.
Hey Brendan, just got to say this is a amazing and very insightful video. Thanks and If you ever come to Kruger National Park again, hit me up.. Ill show you the best spots around.
Well young Brendon great vlog valuable info! Ive been in and out of photography for about 40 years and now being retired Ive started doing editorial and commercial stock and now starting to make a small return each month. Jings had to be thick skinned as rejection is the norm nowadays. Haven't sent stuff into magazines as yet (I'm a coward) but will need to think about it. Strangely enough the editorial stuff is selling well but one thing to add is the editing process as well. Have you ever had issues submitting the same work to multiple editors at the same time? I know some wont accept submissions that are under consideration elsewhere but is that not always the case?
I burned a bridge once because I pitched a story to lots of editors and 2 picked it up. One of them, got mad when I told her that I chose another magazine. She wrote "OK, then don't bother pitching me anymore." haha
@@BrendanvanSon haha, its tough, we are all just trying to make a living, we cant always sit on pitches and images for months while we wait to see if someone is going to even respond to us!
One of my photos will be published in a german photo magazine next month. I even got a whole page, but don't get paid. Still happy to have one of my pics published 👍 PS: Thanks for the cap Brendan, it arrived 2 weeks ago👍👍 and also thank you for recommending shutout. I won 340$ so far😂😜
Wouldn't Portrait orientation only be a requirement if you are targeting selling an image for a full page or ideally the cover (nice if you can get it)? I would think that unless it is for a full page the orientation would be secondary to the impact that the image has.
I guess the point is to shoot both. And, back when I was the editor of my magazine, I found portrait orientation to be much easier to work with regardless. I'd say I used 60% portrait orientation.
PhotoJournalism people ask me about me about that and what they do has changed over the years, cool thing is with technology one person can do so much, sometimes I'm still amazed what the equipment in my backpack is capable of, I can make stories, news content, stock content, social media content. One thing I tell everyone have other sources of income, it is very hard to make a living at it alone unless you are working for one of the big media companies. And submit portrait and landscape the portraits are used for covers.

Question about property releases for commercial / editorial use - I assume that for this video we are talking about editorial use and you don't need property releases, but it's a different story with commercial use. How and where you can get reliable information do you need it or not. I am aware that every country is different but when you travel you will need this knowledge about every place you visit. EDIT: Also are your YT videos or instagram / facebook etc. post are commercial use (if it's not sponsored content)?
I have a question about going through customs. What do you tell Customs Officers when they ask the purpose of your visit. Some countries can be really funny about "Business" or working trips without the proper visa. But I don't want to go through the intense visa process to get a work visa and I don't want to lie to a customs officer and tell them that I'm a tourist. Customs officers will occasionally ask you what your work or job is. What do you say?
I usually just say I'm there for tourism. I'm working for my company - or someone else's - from outside the country it's fine. You could say you were there on business, but I've never had an issue. It usually goes like "what are you here for?" "travel, I'm doing a bit of a photography trip", "cool, enjoy your stay".
Do you submit the story to many magazines at the same time or only one magazine at a time and wait for the answer from that one before submitting it to a another magazine (if it got rejected by the first one)?
I usually slowly roll out emails. I pitch 3 different stories from a destination: Day 1: Pitch stories 1 and 2 to mag 1 and 2 Day 2: Pitch stories 3 and 1 to mag 3 and 4 Day 3: Pitch stories 2 and 3 to mag 5 and 6 Day 4: Pitch stories 1 and 2 to mag 7 and 8 That way, it gives them a small amount of time to respond. But, you'll always get editors that respond a month or two later. Just use that as an opportunity to pitch something new while you have their attention.
My rule was that I'd pitch 1-2 magazines the same story each day. Then, if they don't get back to you for 2 weeks you can say "sorry, I didn't hear back from you so I passed it on to another magazine". BUT, that's a great time to pitch another story to them. You have their attention.
That is sensible. I will try that from now on. Thank you ! And thanks Brendon for taking the time to reply in between your hectic schedule. Appreciate it !
As you travel in these various countries, I'm sure you are going in on "tourist" type visas. Since you are bringing pro photo gear, do they question you about your intentions?

As you travel in these various countries, I'm sure you are going in on "tourist" type visas. Since you are bringing pro photo gear, do they question you about your intentions?
Yesss 😁
Excellent content and very reassuring that not being a travel photographer is soo right for me 😂
hahaha, it's definitely no for everyone.
Since competition is murdering out there, is it editor's market? I'm moneywise
I think it's always been an editor's market. But, it's also a "people who pitch well" market.
how much time it takes to get accepted
Depends. Might be a day, might be a month, might be never. You need to be patient.
I will stick to stock photography!
It's definitely more straight forward these days!
One of your best ever vlogs. Brilliant advice. As a semi-retired freelance writer, I endorse every word, especially the rejection tips. You’ve made want to get back in the rat race 😂
Thanks man. Glad you liked it. It's funny, isn't it. I haven't been "rat-racing" for ages. But, I kind of miss the sport of hunting down sales. haha
