    And I was that cold caller! Brendan thanks for getting me back on track at ITB. Had a lot of rejections BUT I may have come away with some very cool possibilities for this year and next! 👍After our chat things improved tenfold 😀

      Good for you Julian!!! Really awesome stuff man. That's exactly what it's all about!!

      @JulianElliottPhotography 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! I'm hoping one of the lines of enquiry will bear fruit this week. And currently in talks with a tour operator in Canada about some work over there. But as Brendan says, it is very very tiring and people shouldn't under-estimate the work that we need to do as professional photographers.

      Well good luck with your leads from the ITB, and enjoy your future travels, I'll look forward to the vlog!! BTW, thought your recent upload with the tips on becoming a professional travel photographer was also very honest, clearly shows it's a tough industry and probably only getting harder!! Cheers

    Wow Brendan, such an engaging vlog. I took so much away from this to help me understand travel photography business. I actually recently got back from Bruges, Belgium and I had booked into a hotel as a treat (normally stay in hostels). Booked a basic double and got a deal for £60 a night. Looked at their website and then their Instagram .... nothing! So I got in touch with them and offered my services to do an Instagram take over or provide them images. Ended up with an upgrade to a junior suite which is usually £200 a night! Got some lovely images of the room but more lifestyle feels and some images from around the city for them!! All because I asked ..... left me feeling valued and positive for this year. Thanks again for the inspiration buddy, Mark. The Birdman from London meetup vlog ...

    As a side note for people that are more into the video side of travel there is a guy named Chris Hau on youtube that has done a few videos on pitching clients and how he got his start. He actually started getting clients by basically going to cities around him and making videos and posting them. To a certain extent that is a way to get yourself in the door with photography too. Find places around where you live and basically do a personal project that could get picked up. Once you can get some exposure it is easier. Its tough to pitch to a overseas tourism board if you have no experience dealing with any tourism boards.

    I’m never going to be a travel photographer but this episode was still worth watching. I’ve been through most of your vlogs from the start and the growth you’ve made even in the last year is something to be proud of. Your strength is firstly your knowledge which got you part way and now it’s your strength with social media and being a people person. You now have a reputation as a very good travel photographer and people out there due to your building a strong social media are buying into you and want to learn and meet you. I think this is an avenue that will really grow for you. You’re moving to a higher level. All I can say is well deserved 📸👍

      And also a degree in photography provides a basic framework to support the talent that you already have. The courses you take will fill in the gaps for you so that you can take professional pictures in almost any situation. You will also have a chance to work with photographers who have been in the field for several years. Their experience and knowledge can be priceless for someone who has not worked as a professional yet. *And also if you want to work 99% of them asks for a degree*

    Hey Brendan, thank you so much for this video. It was just what I needed to hear at this point in time. I'm not a travel photographer but I feel a lot of this information is transferable across other genres of photography. I'm a lifestyle photographer focusing on adventure and action sports and I've figured out my USP and how I can give extra value to clients but the one area I'm struggling with is licensing. Do you give unlimited usage with your images, is it a year with limitations on usage etc? Any help with this would be so ideal. Thanks again man, continue to crush it.!!

I had a person actually doing the same thing I was doing with video the other day with a cell phone, and this person walked right up to my camera and spoke right into my lens that they were blocking my shots on purpose so they could get the paying shot uggghhh (editorial), I was nice and tried to maneuver but man I was upset at the end of the day, ruined my shots, all of them, and of course I did not get paid. I hate the word influencer too.. lol... I look at influencer and see "crappy photographer"... Also totally agree with the whole comment about Travel Alberta not needing photographers. They have guys like Paul Zizka and Stevin Tuchiwsky out here that will get them shots that arent as common and they are very very very well known. Less known to a certain extent is Adam Gibbs from BC that was rated the second best landscape photographer in the world (Max Rive won... great photographer but not 100% my style)...

      Yes, exactly with Paul and Steve; @photojbartlett is there too. And Callum and Taylor before they left for the coast.

    What kind of licenses do you give with the photos? Unlimited usage? A year license?

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually a first-usage non-exclusive lasting 2 years.
