Loved this video so much! I would love to see more videos on what photos sell and what to look for when shooting with the intention of selling the images
Brendan, one of the most asked questions that we get as stock photographers is do you sell work as rights managed or as royalty free. I think you should try and get the message out about some of pitfalls of each one. RF is great in that you get sales straight away through agencies such as Shutterstock. However if that work gets stolen then the chances of properly nailing down any infringer is almost zero. You may remember our conversation earlier in the year about stolen work. Well for me it's still going on. And one of the arguments you get from infringers is "I can buy an image similar to this on Shutterstock for peanuts so why the charge over and above?" This for me is why I will now only sell my own work as Rights Managed because if work does get stolen then you have a better chance of being fully recompensed.
Great video....in fact it might be one of the best, most informative videos you have posted. I think I speak for a lot of viewers when I say that we really enjoy the “this is how this works” videos along with the photography “why you shoot the way you do” videos. I miss the octopus...lol. Keep up the great work and be safe.
Really fascinating vlog Brendan. So interesting to hear you explain those differences between sellable images & those that might not be. So valuable. Georgia is such an amazing country , it's been so cool to see it through your eyes, it's been an incredible past few weeks, thanks.
Excellent and informative. I had wondered how many shots you typically keep or take. Interesting take on how to create images to sell. Love your enthusiasm and confidence.
Great video, Brendan! Do you normally get model releases from human subjects? I would think that the market for some of these images would be significantly limited without a model release. Thanks!
Brendan, fine video! I do have a question though. Here it is. I hear in your video to leave or create dead space within your photo, here is the question lol.. Would you create copies of photos taken to sell as prints as well? I ask, because landscape photographers i follow don't incorporate dead space in there photo's, it's all about cropping.. and so on. Again sorry so long winded, love your demeanor and your videos.
I mean, most landscape photographers have a hard time selling their work for this reason. Sure, when I shoot landscapes I shoot what looks best. But it's still the stuff with the dead space that sells best. In my opinion, in general, it's extremely hard to make a living off of print sales alone.

Hey Brendan! I´ve just found out about your TH-cam channel and it´s already been an inspiration! Photography and travel is a life goal and I feel I can learn a lot from your videos. Thank you very much!
Hi! Would be really interesting if you put those pictures out for sale, and do a follow-up in (perherps) three months, to see what's selling!? Lots of good pictures!
Just started watching a bunch of your videos and came across this one. I was in Poti, Georgia in 2005 when I was deployed. Unfortunately, it was before I ever even gave photography a thought, and my ship was only in port for 3 days (1 day of liberty), so I wasn't able to get out and explore as much as I would have liked. I'd LOVE to get back up into the countries I saw while deployed in the black sea (Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia) now that I've gotten into photography, but I'm a civilian now with a full time job and 3 kids, so I don't have the money to get back there, but I'd love to see the photos from the trip back that you're talking about (since it's now 2019)!
very good advices about selling photos (I wouldn't have thought about big dead spaces...) ! I didn't konw Georgia but thank's to you, it appears on my list of place to go :)
You nailed it! What an awesome video not only showcasing landscape images that appeal to the lure of travel photography but also the other side which entails street photography...which was your stated vision for the video. Would you dare to attempt to “ballpark” what someone could expect to be compensated for stock images as such?
Really great video, Brendan. If you could please make a video on your take on model and property releases, I think a lot of us would appreciate it. Thanks again and congratulations!
So much gold in this video. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m currently sorting pics from a recent Canada trip and I feel like this video is particularly useful right now. Enjoy Greece ✌️

Great information.nice to see selling images from an expert photographer
This was an amazing video, I really appreciate the level of detail and discussion over what sells, but more importantly, why it sells. Crucial to understand if you're looking to jump into photography and make some income.
That flea market photo Envious (in a good way) its awesome, also thank you for sharing your knowledge Im a recent subscriber and I have thoroughly been enjoying the content and knowledge that you have been sharing and adventure you been on with having informational value.
Brendan -Been following you for a while now. I think you have one of the best, most useful, channels on TH-cam. Keep up the good work and keep up the travelling.
Hey Brendan, thanks for this content! You showed an image of the Peace Bridge and mentioned that it would sell well on Shutterstock. Did you have to get some kind of release because of it being a recognizable structure? In my experience they've been really finicky about stuff like that.
Amazing shots, love them. I'm biased but I prefer the one of the Jodie at the stairs little more than the others but have to say overall just stunning shots. Have to be honest yesterday I sat down and gave my photography a thought, I haven't been out for a decent trip since February when I got snowed out of Skye. I haven't done a vlog in ages as RL is to busy at the mo BUT living through your experiences helped me make a decision. I'm going to be investing in a campervan in the next year, I might not be able to jump on a jet and go see the world thanks to work and my small business I run on the side BUT I live in one of the most stunning places in the world (Scotland of course) and having a campervan will give me opportunities over a weekend or even over night to leave home and within a few hours be on location, do sunset/sunrise and return to home next day. I don't have having to worry about the cost of accommodation or having to return to base every night (Volvo V40 is very uncomfortable to sleep in). Long story short, thank you for the inspiration and keeping the flame lit to get out there and shooting.
Thanks for this, so many images you showed I wouldn't event take or share, I guess I'll need to change my ways a little bit if I want to start to make money and continue to travel 😂😂😂
Hope that you'll keep the story going, Brendan, by telling which pictures sell. I appreciated your comments in a recent video telling us not to upgrade just because a camera is new. When I get the bug to buy new prosumer features, I have a friend who asks me, "Do you even know how to work all of the features of your current camera?" That slows me down.
I just want to say that I think that you are an awesome photographer and TH-camr. I am fourteen years old and I have decided that I am going to be a travel photographer. When I came across your channel that is when I started looking into photography so thank you. 👍🏻😎❤️👏🏻
Do big deal.....I was just wondering what the 'best practice' was for getting releases. I would probably just run after her and talk to her parents/guardian.
I just saw the video today and thought the same thing. Then I remembered these pictures were not taken in the USA. I would imagine that photography use laws vary from place to place. Maybe this location has very few, if any, limitations on who or what you can take a picture of...
Hey Brendan, Quick question for you. When uploading to the stock sites, is it better upload as editorial? I have a lot of photos online but can't seem to get traction and wondering if switching them to editorial as opposed to just artistic would be smarter. Thanks man! Josh
Awesome information! I usually never have in mind what the buyer might need or that empty space. One question what would be the ideal way to contact potential buyers? Do you just contact the editor from the magazine?
Email. But, it usually depends on the magazine/client. You have to remember that some magazine editors get 100s of emails a day. Back at my magazine (which was tiny) I would get 5-10 a day from photographers. I started to ignore most of them.
Hey Brendan. Beautiful images. What an incredible place!! I found a couple of your images with hydro lines a bit distracting. I wonder if taking them out would make a big difference. Just a thought :) Loved your Georgia series.
very informative, Ive had limited success on stock sites, but I never used the editorial upload and most of my shots have people in them so I never could upload unless I had a release which was rare a stranger would sign on my phone for a model release. Will be interesting to see you and Greg split up, if that is the plan for now, as it is obvious you two help each other be better creators, and in turn, help all of us. Looking forward to tomorrow to see where your going
Seems to me that you're making your own case for getting more participation in the stock photo game and beefing up that tentacle of your octopus. I hear good things about Alamy but haven't tried it yet. Great content! Rock on!
I have the same question. Usually when you submit they always want a model release or location release, especially for art work. Does Stock require a release?
Thanks Brendan. This is helpful. Have been following you for years, and wondered about this. Even though I have been selling prints and images for a while now I still never have send any images to magazines. Even though I am pretty sure they are good, something is stopping me. Ever going to make a video for that process?
Great advice mate - I'm going to be hammering shutterstock over the next 3 months so this will help. Cheers Jase PS - Can't tune in tomorrow to find out... It's Friday - Booooo and Horayyyy at the same time :)

Yeah, as I looked at it more, I'd say it was the rule of 3s. The classic Steve McCrury Triangle. It's one of the compositions tricks I've never been good at.
How do you manage the releases that most stock agencies require when people are in the shot? I've had images refused even though there have been no faces; they still claim it's a recognizable person. Sometimes it varies from company to company.

To me, it's valueless if I clone it out. I can only sell the image as editorial, and you can't photo-manipulate an editorial photo. Also, I actually like the cable, adds a strange frame and some imperfection to the image.
Hi Brandon dont you need a model release for the first image of hte little girl onthe bench or is it considered to be ok once the person is in a public place
Hey BVS, where are you selling images like these? I'm making like $0.25 off images sold on shutterstock...that's not much. Does the amount you get depend on what they use it for? I'm new to stock. Thanks!
Yeah, usage is a big deal. And, I KNOW it seems like 25 cents is a rip-off, but their usage is usually very limited. And, some images sell thousands of times. I have one photo that has over $1200 in accrued sales. That said, I've been focusing on Rights-Managed Stock for the last while, and though I haven't uploaded in ages. I like the value I get there per image (usually in the $100-500 range).
Hi There Brendan! Im hoping to get into street photography one day soon. I imagine ill make a good, albeit nervous, street photographer. Your image of the kid by herself is really quite beautiful however I don't think I'll be able to take it unless i've spoken to the parent first. I'll be thinking... well it's a minor I don't know, the parents might not be too happy if they see me, also I wouldn't be happy about it either if it was my kid. What are your thoughts on this?
Been watching your channel now since your Japan trip and this is my first comment. I look forward to watching your stuff everyday. Keep it up. Absolutely love what you do.
I think when landscape photographers and nature photographers say one image a month or a year its not about hero images and how to make money, in regards of making money and creating sellable images you are right you need to create a lot more than that. This is more so for what passes YOUR standard not your client's to go into your portfolio. Your standard of what is good to go into your portfolio should be higher than your client's standard of what is good enough to buy and pay you money for. If your client loves 20 images and buys 20 of them that doesn't mean all 20 should also be good enough to go into your portfolio by your standards. Having one image a month that is good enough to showcase in your portfolio is doing good, this doesn't mean only creating one sellable image per month. What you upload to a stock site vs what you feature and show case in your website and your portfolio are two different standards. Sellable vs portfolio worthy are different levels.
Hmm, so in other words I have to unlearn what took me quit some time to really get. “Fill the Frame” and “you are responsible for every element in the frame” or “photography is the art of subtracting”. Ahh well, I thought about (still am actually) selling my images for a long time but haven’t even created accounts on stock sites yet...
Plzz make a video on how to start your travel photographer career ....... how to find clients and how to get more money out of your photos ...... And I am not getting video notifications even though I have clicked the bell icon .....
So, why are you not addressing “ model & property releases? I can’t imagine you selling any of these images to respectable magazines or publishers, without the correct release. If you’re going to encourage photographers to sell images of people and landmark locations, shouldn’t you also answer their questions about model & property releases? You could be setting a young photographer up for a potential lawsuit.
I think it would be really cool if you did giveaways. Like a signed 5x7 or poster print of one of your photos. Or even a photo book of your adventures!

3 weeks of awesome videos and photos. I feel like I completely know this place. I really enjoyed your time spent of your travels. Thanks. :)
Glad you liked the trip, Jim!

Great end of the journey in Georgia! Thank you for sharing experience about how and what photos are selling.
Some great insight into how to sell your shots, and why different shots sell, nice one Brendan.
Good video, enjoyed your images and descriptions.

Love all of your favorite shots. Hope you will make videos like this after each location in the future.
I can write or create a lot of stories by looking at those pictures. Awesome photos ; cheers mate !
great vid, I love your shot looking down the stairs , super nice DOF and colors!
Thanks Nate! I was really pleased with that shot myself.
Very good explanation of how it works and why, when it comes to selling travel photos. Nailed it.
Hi! Would be really interesting if you put those pictures out for sale, and do a follow-up in (perherps) three months, to see what's selling!? Lots of good pictures!
Aside from your stock photo vid, this is one of the most informative photo/business vids I've seen. TYVM!
Been Great to see the four of you's so Great
Love all of these Brendan!

Cool story Brendan 👍
I just want to say that I think that you are an awesome photographer and TH-camr.
I am fourteen years old and I have decided that I am going to be a travel photographer.
When I came across your channel that is when I started looking into photography so thank you. 👍🏻😎❤️👏🏻
What is your experience around getting model releases; I'm thinking of the child on the bench that ran away right after you took that image.
And property release? One of the buildings in your cityscape photo has a company logo on it. Do you remove it i Photoshop?
I was thinking the same thing. Wonder why he isn't answering this question?

Right?! I can't believe how quick those 3 weeks went by!
Man you really love what you do !! Pretty good job , congrats.
What's not to love? I take pictures and travel for a living!
Super informative! 👍🏻
Very nice! Brendan what percentage of your income comes from stock photography?
Great advice mate - I'm going to be hammering shutterstock over the next 3 months so this will help. Cheers Jase
PS - Can't tune in tomorrow to find out... It's Friday - Booooo and Horayyyy at the same time :)
That’s really interesting stuff. Thanks
Hey Brendan, what about model releases, if you wanna sell the photos ?
What do we do about photos with random people in them, how do you sell them?
Which photography stock pages do u use?
Shutterstock and Tandem, but I haven't uploaded in months and months.
Any thoughts on Adobe Stock? Better/ worse or same thing as Shutterstock and Tandem? This videos was VERY helpful and VERY informative! THANKS!!!
Those pics are stunning! 😊
Thanks Abir!
Do you need releases when taking pictures of strangers? Or do you sell them as a Editorial images?
Only for commercial sale. If there are people in them, they get tagged "editorial" unless I have a release.
That image your not sure why you like. Id say it was the leading line of the curb and wall of photos combined with the triangle that your eye draws between the 2 people and the statue. Great video!
Yeah, as I looked at it more, I'd say it was the rule of 3s. The classic Steve McCrury Triangle. It's one of the compositions tricks I've never been good at.
I think this is a stupid question but what I need to do for sell my images in the Shutterstock?
How do you manage the releases that most stock agencies require when people are in the shot? I've had images refused even though there have been no faces; they still claim it's a recognizable person. Sometimes it varies from company to company.

Also, I actually like the cable, adds a strange frame and some imperfection to the image.
Hi Brandon dont you need a model release for the first image of hte little girl onthe bench or is it considered to be ok once the person is in a public place
Absolutely, if I was going to sell if for commercial. For editorial, I don't.
What would be some editorial examples? Also, how do you manage releases? Digital, paper etc? Thanks! :)
What about model releases?
can't live without your videos
Can't live without your comments.

I definitely would have taken out the power line in the very first image of the girl sitting on that bench! 😎

What kind of photos sell more on stock agencies
Depends on the person. For me, destination photos.

180 is very few?? I was for one week at Yosemite and kept like 4 images, hahaha.......
Haha, 4??? That said, when you're shooting street and portraits you're always going to keep more.

I love photos you can sell hahhaa
Hehe

Good effort. I'll give you an assistant captain's badge on the notification squad.
Lol thanks
So, why are you not addressing “ model & property releases? I can’t imagine you selling any of these images to respectable magazines or publishers, without the correct release. If you’re going to encourage photographers to sell images of people and landmark locations, shouldn’t you also answer their questions about model & property releases? You could be setting a young photographer up for a potential lawsuit.
I think it would be really cool if you did giveaways. Like a signed 5x7 or poster print of one of your photos. Or even a photo book of your adventures!
