Love the vlogs and your content and enthusiasm. Can I be blunt, the first image you describe as a hero image you need a tilt shift lens. Arch leaning backwards and lines converging in. This could be so much better. I hope you take this as helpful and not as calling you out. I will continue to watch because I enjoy the vlogs.

It would be inappropriate to put forward some psycho-babble about what I think you should or shouldn't do based on whom I think you are based solely on watching your channel. However, I think that one can get a sense of someone's personality if you watch them enough, even if you've never actually met them. So I'm going to take a risk and make a couple of observations... 1) your job (sources of income) stem from your travel and your photography…therefore, whatever changes you make, this should be your primary concern. Which leads me to 2) if TH-cam is an important component of your income, or your marketing (which leads to income), then you should continue to put making regular (and frequent) content as another top priority. 3) it’s obvious that you miss vlogging…you talk about it incessantly, and almost seem to be forcing yourself NOT to vlog. So I think you need to start regular vlogging again…but that leads me to my final observation, and I’ll use Heaton as an example to make my point… 4) Heaton’s vlogs (which I love by the way) are about making and showing one or two images…sort of… actually, he pairs that with his second love, getting outdoors for hikes and using his camper van. I don’t know how vlogging fits into his business model, but it’s clear that he loves hiking around, and making a small number of stunning images. YOU on the other hand seem to love travel, love exploring distant lands, love living nomadically, and yes, love making pictures. So vlog about that. Tell the stories of your adventures and accompany those stories with your pictures…a visual magazine article if you will. And to make the vlogging simpler, easier, and more organic, ditch the huge rig…it’s overkill… find something very small, very light, and with acceptable good IBIS so you can easily and quickly capture vlogging content while you’re experiencing the travel (and yes, if you like eating, include food stories and photos). 5) but if on the other hand, your passion is only photographing sunrise and sunset, and selling those images to publishers/editors, then do that and ditch the TH-cam thing… but you and I know that’s not what inspires you to wake up every morning… I’m just saying….(and doing so respectfully, hopefully)… Jon

Love love love this! I love that you are so honest and share exactly what you're feeling. Think that's why I'm so drawn to this channel! The transition you went through is super interesting I didn't even think about that! I've been watching since 2016 and I honestly got emotional myself when you told me you were ending the vlog. You were the one person that was making a video every single day, documenting you working and making your dream a reality and that was the most inspiring thing ever to me. I don't think I'd be working as a full time photographer right now if it wasn't for watching your videos so thank you!!!!!!

It's wild that you came to photography out of a professional need, and are just now experiencing the joy of taking images because you want to. It doesn't sound selfish at all. I would say the vast majority of us shoot things for ourselves first, and then try to work out the money aspect later. (Usually because we've sunk an amazing amount of money into gear and our significant other starts raising an eyebrow.) I'm happy that you finally get a chance to see photography differently.

What I see with many vloggers, or at least that's my impression, is that sometimes the vlogging seems to get into the way of photography. For me photography is first, which also means that I often don't capture loads of behind the scenes footage while I take the photos -> I focus on my photography. I record a lot of the footage well ahead or after taking the photos. This means my vlogs are not as good as they could be. But the photos are ultimately more important to me and I don't compromise on that.
So decide, which it is for you: photographer or vlogger -> and find a balance that works and makes you happy with the results.
From this vlog here it seems you enjoy the results you got because of focussing more on the photography side of things. And to be honest, in many of your past vlogs the photography seemed a bit rushed and hectic to me and I think this was largely due to the fact that you also had to worry about the video footage. So I think you are on the right track and reduce the multi-tasking ;-) Really liked the series from Taiwan

Awesome video, this actually brought me some comfort. Trying to delve into travel photography as well as travel vlogging has been such a balance battle. My first 2 days in Vietnam i only shot photos and felt HORRIBLE about not shooting more video. The opening statements really hit home. I’m not a daily vlogger by any means, but I felt conflicted trying to do both every day of traveling.

Vlogging to you is what listening to podcasts is to me. Today on a photowalk my bluetooth earpiece died and suddenly I saw 10x more compositions, like instantly. Only because my beloved podcast was finally silent. Food for thought for me.

But really its up to you!👍

I think you shouldn't be so harsh with yourself when it comes to making these "indoor talking videos" because as you said we are your therapists, but for us ( at least myself), these videos are therapeutical as well meaning that it refreshes us to just sit down and talk about photos. With regards to your new vlogging style my view is that it is definitely a great decision, putting out better quality content against making more videos.

I'll be honest Brendan, I've enjoyed your vlogging, but mostly for the travel content. I was never all that impressed with your photography (although it certainly wasn't bad). But these images from Taiwan are definitely a big step up from your previous work IMO. So in answer to your question, yes, your photography is improving by not vlogging so much. I hope you will find a balance that works for you and your fans.

At some point Brendan it seems that the point at which the most photographers recognized for producing (capturing) remarkable, original and inspiring images transcend the conscious pursuit of becoming a 'Technically' good photographer to becoming a natural artist who employs the technical process as part of an intuitive art form that transcends words and rules. I suspect that being unfettered by a vlogging and obligations will be a needed step in that direction and will allow you to bring something more transcendent to future vlogs. 👍

Really enjoyed this one. I’ve been to a few places recently and watching your last one I realised that creating the story or feel of a place is what I’ve always done without knowing. I don’t think Instagram is the platform so maybe I should get my website sorted and use Instagram to advertise my site where the main images will be. I went to vietnam and shot some amazing pics but still haven’t edited or instagrammed them yet. My shots aren’t epic but they do tell a story of my adventure there. I have many others like that and this and your other blog really show how I can do this. Keep it going mate and enjoy the freedom. Time to rediscover and enjoy taking the shots!! That what we all love to do mate. Cheers Jase

Brendan I'm curious at your comments around 2:20. You say you went from being a photographer to a TH-camr. Out of all the people that vlog on TH-cam you are one of the last people I would say who was just a "vlogger". Why? Because although you vlogged daily you still actually did something with your work be it images into a stock library or creating work for Eddie Bauer. Sorry you were never just a vlogger. • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  5 ปีที่แล้ว

It didn't have any thing to do with photography. The thing about my channel is that it never was "about photography". It was an attempt at a look behind the scenes of the life of a travel photographer on the road. And, a lot of that is the travel.
I get that's not for everyone.
But, after years of showing the behind the scenes, I think you (and others) are right that it's best to put the focus on photography and try to put up a bit more quality.
I hope you had the chance to check out videos like the one from Banaue, and the street photography in Manila video. The style, I hope, has evolved into something that works a bit better for everyone.

I’ve been watching your videos since pre 10k subs. I watched them because they were daily vlogs, as a result of watching your videos TH-cam also showed me them high up on my lists. I’m subscribed to over 100 channels, your current set up rarely shows your most recent release on my list, what’s there now is others who are posting daily and I’m definitely watching less of what you post. If you think about why people watched initially, I’d say it was for the travel and the photography was just an add on to that. If you’re only posting 3 times a week and two of those are just talking head type videos...
