    I love the Income Octopus ;)
    Here is a summary of the income streams mentioned in the video:
    1 - Editorial: Magazines, Newspapers, Blogs, etc
    2 - Commercial: Working with Brands
    3 - Stock: Rights Managed and Microstock
    4 - Social: Working with Brands on their social media accounts
    5 - Blog
    6 - Vlog
    7 - Photo/writing Assignments
    8 - Miscellaneous
    Some other potential income sources:
    9 - Affiliate marketing: recommending products and services you use that pay you a commission for refering a sale.
    10 - Teaching: E-books, Video courses, Workshops, Speaking at events
    11 - Photography Tours
    12 - Selling photography prints
    Another tip I would add is if you're travelling longer term you can volunteer in exchange for accommodation and food to bring down your travel expenses and then work on your own stuff on your time off.
    www.workaway.info/
    www.helpx.net/
    As well as camping and couchsurfing.

      Thanks for breaking that down! That's great.
      I do earn from 9-12 as well, although I count 9 into Blog income. And workshops and phototours I just put in as assignments. Print sales are so minimal for me that I just plug that into misc.

    Wow man. Thanks so much, this is exactly what I needed. I quit my 7 -5 job to go into full time photography. Starting with full time assisting till the season ends and then hope by then I've built up enough resources and knowledge to carry me through the winter, also maybe go visit a friend in Namibia since I'm in SA. Thank you though, I've always considered my "art" to be a business and not just a state of existential crisis creating work for sensation but rather run it as a business with the 9-5 principle but in my own way. So honestly, thank you. This December holiday was long, all the businesses are closed and tomorrow I'm going to the warehouse to check out the lighting equipment I'll be using this season. If all goes well I hope to meet you on the road. I'll go look for you on Instagram. Safe travels!

    I love the new look of your channel, you're back to adding the value that got me watching in the first place! You have a ton of really useful information in a really approachable way. I'd love to see a "getting the shot" on street portraiture!

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad. I thought it would be fun to mix things up between the vlog and the learning stuff. Keeps everyone happy. And, yeah, my goal in the channel was always to give back a bit.
      And, yes, your idea for a street portraiture getting the shot is coming up. I hope to do it in Goa, although I'm not sure what the situation will be like there.

    Your handwriting is way better than mine. Always enjoy how open you are, and this sounds like good sound advice from someone who has figured out a path that works well for them, and addresses all of the alternatives that might work well for others.

    I really appreciate the honesty, too; it's one thing to say there are 8 ways you make money (love the income octopus) but being so open about how much you're making on each from not only this trip but overall is really appreciated.

    Hey Brendan, really nice video. People almost never share their inside knowledge of the business. Even though I am never ever going to do what you do (which btw I admire so much) it was interesting to learn that aspect of your work. I guess the next logical step in your evolution would be to build a small team that can chase up all those assignments, editorials, etc and you making all the decisions. It might take another 5 years, but if you don't grow you won't be able to move forward. In addition you will come to the realization that you cannot be a one man show for ever. Not to mention that you will feel less stressed trying to juggle all that by yourself. This is where taking the intern is the first step towards this direction. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors and good luck.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're exactly right in the evolution. I'm actually looking for an intern as you might have seen in another video. This will be part of their work. I also have a management team that looks for work for me as well.

    I really enjoyed this video. It is very interesting to see how anyone can start into the business of travel photography from the ground up and how you can go from breaking even to earning a profit. The income octopus was a very good model for showing the different ways for earning income from travel photography as it is very easy to understand. I am glad to see how you are living the dream by seeing exciting places and earning money along the way. Although traveling is only a hobby of mine right now, it is cool to see how it can be possible to make a living on travel, and I may consider changing my career into something in the travel world. Only time will tell. I hope all the best, and I will for sure keep watching!

    Thank you for this vlog! There's so much gear-related content on the interwebs, but not much real down-to-earth business talk, at least about our industry. So much appreciated!
    I'm looking forward to going full-time as a travel and outdoor lifestyle filmmaker/photographer (the gap between those two is getting narrower each day), but still struggling with the business side of it. Especially the part of getting assignments and doing commercial work when you're just starting out and if you're not exactly living in the busy part of the World such as US, Canada or even Western Europe. It can't be cold-calling, can it?

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eaglewood Films yup cold calling is a huge part of getting work. And there's lots of work around. In India, if I wanted, I could have worked 100 days for the hotels. Everyone wanted images. But, how would you know that unless you called them and pitched them?

I'm actually about to start attempting travel photography (lots of things to do to prep still), but I'm looking forward to starting my first "Me" venture in about three weeks. Fortunately I'm not starting from a debt position like you talked about since I saved money from my day job I had just quit. It's going to be a really tough first year, like you said, but I think that I'm going to enjoy this far more than my previous job.

Quite a good amount of information. Octopus is a nice way to track your earnings. Is the online sites like Dreamstime, Shutterstock, Fotolia, istockphoto are the source you can sell or there are other ways to get clients who look for photographer and photographs?

    Great video Brendan! (And nice to meet you quickly the other morning at Lower Sabie!)
    Just wondering, on the Stock spotted tentacle - did you have another video on that? Any suggested agencies? I've been wondering what the work (keywording, uploading time etc) to reward ratio was like, but it sounds like it'd be worth building up a bit of a portfolio. Just hard to know where to host it :-/.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing how your business works. Now I have a better idea on how to start getting mine off the ground a bit more. I already so a few of the eight legs but did not know about the others till now. Now if I could just get rid of my CC debt too lol.

      Man, debt sucks. I cannot wait to be debt-free. If I keep my photography business steady for the next while, I could maybe have it cleared in 18 months which would be amazing.

    • @Bigalsphotography
      @Bigalsphotography 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be amazing and I hope you pull it off and maybe even get rid of it sooner. I am looking to sell all the stuff I never use that I have laying around. Seeing yourself and Elia Locardi who can just up and go without "stuff" holding you back is something I want to work for.
      I decided if I don't use or need it that means it has to go. Plus that will help pay off some of my debt lol.

    This is such a fantastic video!! I am hoping to start doing this full time soon and it has been so hard to know how to approach it. When you say "breaking even" does that include business costs such as gear insurance, travel insurance, new gear you need, website hosting, etc.? Thanks so much!

    Perhaps the best video explaining all the ins and outs of travel
    photography. Thanks for the inspiration! I have one question, how to
    approach editorial or commercial clients. Where to find them? Any
    websites like fiverr where you can find new clients? How to know the
    worth of your travel article? How much can I be expected to be paid for
    my travel article?

    With your permission, can I share this?

    Great tutorial brother. Thank you for sharing your experience and how you do it. I have been looking into getting videography as a job. It is something that I enjoy doing. Have you heard anything about MatadorU? I've heard some good things about that site.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MatadorU used to be good. I know that there's definitely been a decline over there. Not sure what the deal is these days, to be honest.

      @giovannifiorentini8295 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brendan van Son I heard as well that it used to be good and it declined. But very recently I have also read that it is still a good deal. Do you recommend a good videography course that also offers opportunities to look for work and networking etc? MatadorU still offers that according to their website. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    So much for me to ask myself. I need to find more information on what editorial work I can do, and how to do it, and what it even is really. Because I have no idea. And how to find these tourism boards or brands or places to pitch to. What do I say to these companies? Which ones work with my photography style? Is my photography even good enough? I need to take more pictures, take more trips. How can I do that whilst barely getting by with my current job? So much good information here Brandon. Although I sort of knew these things existed before, I now know that nothing is going to come to me. I need to go get them and work hard at it. Thanks for opening my eyes a little more!

      @BrendanvanSon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, those are the great questions!
      It's all about pitching and researching. Finding editorial work (magazine, newspaper, etc) is a lot of work. But, if your work is good enough, there will always be people willing to buy it. You just need to pitch everyone.
      As for tourism boards and brands, it's the same thing. Just constantly pitch potential clients that seem like they might be relevant.

    • @memkills
      @memkills 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brendan van Son makes sense. no harm in pitching. worse they can say is no. I would love to see examples of pitches, to better understand what to say. I'm sure it's different depending on who and what you're submitting to. Going to spend tons of time today looking for potential blogs or something that resonates with me and that I can use either pictures I already have or can take with gear I already have.
