      RAM is hotswap compatible if you have a UEFI or BIOS setting for it, but it's typically only used in a server application where software has detected ECC RAM modules that have too many bit error corrections where shutting down the server isn't an option.

Same thing happens, it either shuts down or you get pretty interesting 8 bit style pixels all over the screen and then it shuts off.

You have to remove the hardware first from the system via the os, then power it down, THEN you can pull the hardware unless you're working with a machine that is HotSwap capable. It's not about whether or not a device is hit swappable, it needs to be in a machine that has a HotSwap controller. You must be another millennial, or stupid.

    To my knowledge no ram is hot swappable. As a non expert, I can only say that this is most likely because RAM, which is required for any computer to operate, is checked during the Power On Self Test or POST for short. Things like External storage and peripherals are almost universally hotswappable nowadays. In some cases (as in the literal chassis housing the computer), there are slots specifically designed for hotswapping hard drives and SSDs but this function is typically reserved for servers

    • @yessno8800
      @yessno8800 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @Snehil, there was no programs running, just the desktop, I know obviously it’s going to crash anything what’s running on the stick what is unplugged, but what’s interesting is the way the 2 sticks don’t work together, in fact they work in a RAID 0 like way, so 1 number goes to stick A and the next number to stick B and so on you get the point, so the 2 sticks of memory both run independently, and they share half of the load in a 50:50 ratio. also the computer still worked when 1 stick was out (the mouse pointer and some other small stuff)

      You remove the board (4 cpus and 4 gb of ram on one board) and replace it, without the os and applications going down.

      Every part of a computer is earthed via ferrite chokes and gold plating. Unless you have it plugges into a socket with no earthing you are safe.

      @@DerekHellscream and ferrite chokes don't even have anything to do with safety or grounding, they are usually used to reduce electromagnetic interference. E.g. they're for preventing your phone transmissions from interfering with the image signal going to your monitor and vice versa, not to protect you from shocks.

      @@MedoFortyTwo Anything that prevents interference is a form of grounding as long as voltage is low

      @@DerekHellscream TH-cam ate my first comment: The purpose of grounding is to make sure that touching the *case* of the device doesn't harm you. It does *not* make poking around the inside of the device safe! Depending on what you touch (e.g. something inside the power supply), it's exactly as dangerous as poking something into a wall socket!
      What Star Shine was doing in the video was fairly safe, but not because of grounding. It's safe because he's only working on low-voltage circuits, and additionally he's working on a laptop. Laptops have external power supplies which have safety transformers inside, so there is no mains voltage going into the laptop, and thus no chance of accidentally touching something with mains voltage. Depending on the display backlight technology (especially in older laptops) there may still be high voltage even inside a laptop though, so even with laptops I wouldn't unconditionally say that it's safe.
      You clearly don't know what you are talking about and should not give safety advice. Grounding can help prevent interference, but not everything that prevents interference is grounding. Grounding something in the context of electrical safety means connecting it electrically to protective earth. The ferrites that are clamped around the cables going to your peripherals create a resistance for high-frequency common-mode signals. These two things are simply not related in any way. Gold plating helps prevent surface corrosion and thus helps maintain good electrical contact, but it also has nothing directly to do with grounding.

      @@MedoFortyTwo But how can someone touch inside a power supply?? And someone has to be very dumb to try to put their fingers i side a fan or under heatsinks.

    This only works on dual channel boards where the channel you're messing with is empty, like most two slot boards.
    If you plug in another DIMM into a channel that is already in use, you will definitely crash the computer, badly (and possibly damage things), as the intermittent connection completely screws up memory traffic to the other DIMM on the channel (plus calibration and timings need to be different for two DIMMs)

      right but the system may not even notice at all, when the mobo is going through POST it will disable inactive lanes as to not create conflict errors. so that memory channel may not even be active at all because it's already running in Windows.
