Best Paint For Stucco

There are several choices when picking the best paint for stucco.
Here are some simple rules to know.
Elastomeric paints are the thickest and are waterproof paints. However, they are not self-priming and need 24 hours before recoating.
Masonry paints are almost as thick, and some can be recoated the same day. They are self-priming over bare stucco and can be painted in cooler temps.
Universal paints get the best coverage by far, but they are also much thinner. Some are self-priming, however, none are waterproof paints.

I just had a stucco house painted and was blown away how well the PPG Permacrete covered and penetrated the course stucco our has has in just one coat.
The paint (or stain as they call it) is very very thin, my contractor was confused but when he sprayed and back rolled it it seemed to just get sucked into the stucco like a sponge and dried to a nice satin finish. It filled in hairline cracks just fine, id say coarse hair line cracks…
As a bonus it bonded very well to metal, flashing, chimney cap and service panels. I decided to paint my garage door after seeing this.
Amazing product, glad I took a chance on it, we’ll see how it holds up. The stucco was never painted by the way and is about 37 years old!

You missed a 4th category of masonry paint: mineral silica paints, such as Keim Paint from Germany or Romabio here in the U.S. . Mineral silica paints chemically bond with the masonry, becoming part of it, not merely a film on its surface. They also have an extremely high perm rating, allowing moisture to exit the walls without causing paint failure. Keim paints have been used in Germany for over 100 years with documented examples of mineral paints lasting over 100 years!

This was very informative and helpful but hoping you could answer a question for me. I have an old brick house with stucco dormers that need refreshed. I THOUGHT they were NOT painted. Seems I was wrong. House has been in family since 1967(built in 1930's) and I don't ever remember them being painted, (so probably was done between 1930's and 1967). Can all of these paints be used over the existing paint? There does seem to be some stretch to the paint on the stucco. I dont think Id want to use the elastomeric...too much work. Which would you recommend for this? Benjamin Moore Regal sounds easiest but not sure if it would work? any help would be appreciated. thanks, kim

There are paints from every manufacture that are made to go over stucco or masonry surfaces. Loxon from SW is a good one.

Can I use normal exterior like Behr premium plus and what paint we can’t use for stucco

Behr premium Plus is a fine. Just make sure you read label on other brands

if it is previously painted and in not chipping and peeling, you don't need to prime. Some stucco paints are also self priming.
