- Autodesk makes so many software that it was so overwhelming to make this video. It took four months to just research and write the script of this video because of how confusing the descriptions are for each of these software in their own website. And, many of these software don't have a proper simple explanation anywhere on the internet.

*Six months of effort for making this video.* Looks like it is going good now! If you are subscribing, I suggest clicking the notification bell button because youtube algorithm may not show my videos to you next time as I make so few videos(Less than 2 videos per year). I am trying to build a team now to speed up my video production time while still maintaining the super high quality.
I should mention that most of Autodesk's software were not build by them, but instead they simply acquired successful companies that made those software and integrated it into Autodesk UI. This is the same case with Adobe. This is how it works for most giant companies, as it becomes more difficult to find passionate people to create innovative products, once they become a giant corporate, thus it is easier to simply pay and acquire.
While researching for this video, I saw lot of complaints on several forums about how buggy some of AutoDesk products are, and how they are slow at fixing them as if they don't care. So, if you are considering buying any of these, do proper research before buying as these are very expensive pieces of software.

Now, I want to make a video on other interesting creative software used by artists, designers, engineers etc. Like for example, Adobe alternatives, Free alternatives to Autodesk etc. But it is quite difficult to research this one as it is so broad, so if you know any software that should be included, let me know.
I am asking because I don't want to miss a good software, like in the current video, I missed EAGLE which is an electronics designing software and ROBOT which is a structural load analysis software. If you have any suggestions for future videos or any software that is very good but unpopular, comment here or write to humtogcom [at] gmail [dot ]com
This is an important comment because as a semi- experienced autocad user I can say with confidence your results will vary, a lot. There's many weird/silly bugs/features and simple tasks that are either implemented inefficiently or nonexistent. That said if you wanna draw lots of lines and throw text around it's very good and there are some clever things you can do
All software in this category of usage is buggy to be fair. And in most cases Autodesk are highly responsive to fixing bugs for most of their products. It's just the negative voices are always louder. Needless to say, if you find a bug which is specific to you and your workflow and as such impacts a very small number of people, then it's unlikely to get fixed. There are outliers of course and occasionally I come across bugs which are long standing, impact a lot of users which remain unfixed.
To be fair you did a cracking job but you did miss dozens of products, I ended up making a video covering them all after yours but there's no way I could keep that to anywhere near 12 minutes! There was Camplete, Lustre, Insight, Spacemaker, AutoCAD Raster Design, Structural Bridge Design etc etc and quite a few in your list were discontinued mid last year i.e Sketchbook was sold off and spun out as a separate company in June last year, Character Generator as well ended in August but all in to do that in 12 minutes was a monumental effort and fair play for the amount of research you must have gone through.
suppose you didn't realize 3ds Max has been used in Emmy and Oscar winning movies/shows for over a decade now as well. Like Mando, Game of Thrones, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99..... it's endless.

@@Humtog sweet. If you were to make another one in the future, maybe you can do one on Microsoft Office or Google Suite/services. Google has a motherload of services that most people aren’t aware of, probably just as much as Autodesk. They’re just all online
I will check, but they are not as "visually" good looking as Adobe or Autodesk.
Well to all honesty they just purchased most of these software, slammed a new "Autodesk UI" on it and call it a day. Many of these were not developed by Autodesk, they simply buy stuff to kill the competition. Many-many discounted product, they have a graveyard of software like google does.

I feel that it's extremely important to say that most of the softwares used for cinema and vfx from autodesk are not made by them but BOUGHT from small teams or independent tools.
Arnold itself was already super used in the industry and one of if not the best renderer out there and Autodesk bought it just a couple years ago.
In the vfx industry there is a bit of this inside joke that anything Autodesk buys becomes trash in a couple of years...
Same with Adobe tbh. RIP Substance
Thats actually true, Eagle (not mentioned here - PCB design suit) became shit after Autodesk bought it..

Thanks. And yea, it was way more complex to make this video too. Without the Intro part, I could have fitted it in 10 mins, but that Intro was necessary as most people don't know anything about Autodesk.
When my mum studied interior design in the early 80s, she had to do everything on isometric paper, with minimal training for digital design. Nowadays, if she wanted to get back into that line of work, her skills would be basically obsolete.
It never occurred to me that a company would have to design and sell this sort of modelling software for architecture and the like, but it seems obvious there would be an Adobe for the physical world.
Well it is a completely different world from 40 years ago. Probably not as big as when cars and home electricity became mainstream though.
Her skills wont be obsolete, she knows what to do as a interior designer the only thing that will change is that she would learn how to do it on the computer, her knowledge about interior design is still relevant and the same today its just "pen" she has to use is different nowadays. ( Before it was an actual pen, now that pen is changed to a computer)
My computer graphics teacher in high school was in a similar boat. He trained all his life to draw blueprints, which requires meticulous penmanship without the help of computer graphics. When blueprint software came out though, his career was pretty much over.
I know how to get around in AutoCAD and Fusion360 pretty well, but I still pull out my isometric paper and set squares quite often.

In terms of the Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) segment, Autodesk Revit is used for more than just architecture, it's the only software where also structural and MEP can work in the same environment and has a dominant hold of the market that is moving into the BIM (Building Information Modelling) direction. Revit is basically a graphical database for complete buildings to which Dynamo (Studio) is also an exclusive product to. This all can be connected to the cloud for collaborative work, and while Autodesk BIM 360 that was mentioned in the video is being phased out, it's being replaced by ACC, the Autodesk Construction Cloud. These also run on Autodesk Forge, a developer platform that is the backbone of everything that happens in the cloud.
To add to this, Autodesk Tandem wasn't mentioned. It is a digital twin platform for AEC that is designed for Revit and IFC (open format) models, meant for the owner and operational stage of a buildings life cycle.
Revit is the future!

@@vanrensburgarchitecturebim1641 Absolutely, I've been part of that effort for years too. It's a conservative industry though, change happens slowly but you can get a lot done on the frontlines.

As someone who works as a surveyor, i can't imagine my life without autodesk civil 3d , everything is so easy to work with and it's very difficult to make design mistakes as everything is so visual and in front of you
I always wondered what software civil engineers and architects used. That was a great learning experience!
Revit mostly nowadays, AutoCAD is kind of becoming obsolete for us architects.

@@switaly Revit is a BIM (Building Information Modeling) software, which means that rather than just being a 3D model, each component in the model his important information associated with it. This makes it much easier to use for things like cost estimating and collaborating with contractors. Some clients will even insist that architects use BIM software.
@@awaishssn autocad still has a place in smaller projects but I agree
@@switaly it's very mechanical and has almost no intelligence associated to its 2D/3D features. Revit is very good at everything and way faster, efficient and it fits into the BIM workflow very well. AutoCAD is pretty much useful for just 2D sketches which are not extractions from 3D revit models. Civil 3D still has its place though for numerous reasons, but yeah AutoCAD will slowly phase out eventually. With newer products like Formit getting more and more feature packed, I don't see why people would still want to work in the AutoCad environment.
Autodesk: "Hey can I copy your homework?"
Also Autodesk: "Sure, just change a few things so they don't think we copied from each other."
Autodesk: "Sure."
This is because most of their products were bought from small companies, that targeted only one specific nieche, but were expanded beyond it.

The madman actually did it... I remember in Highschool we all got educational access to like 30 Autodesk programs, but we were never told what it was or what to use the programs for. We were encouraged to create 3D CAD drawings of our projects in technology class, so I tried learning AutoCAD and hated it. I figured it was the right program for the task since it literally has CAD in its name, but as I later learned, I probably should've used Fusion 360.
I later had a Mechatronics class we were actually taught how to use Solidworks, which could've been real handy earlier. I'm now in university where we're learning to use Blender for more creative use rather than engineering. Ironically enough I'm struggling more with Blender than my peers, because I have experience with CAD that I need to unlearn. Really wish I could find some Blender tutorials that targets CAD useres who want to learn Blender for creative uses.

You should check Chocofur Interior Visualisation Course for Blender! I believe it is free on TH-cam now but I don't know if it's in its full realese
I agree. Working with something like Blender after using NX and Inventor for many years I have to "unlearn" the parametric modeling mindset and techniques I used in those software. Blender is an amazing piece of software and I have new found appreciation for people who use it on the regular.
To me it was the other way around, in 2020 I learned a little bit of blender like a little hobbie but the navigation systems sticked with me, then, in 2021, we started to have the subject "CAD" and I was a walking mess because I couldn't get used to it, after 2 months I could do it but it was kinda hard
Biggest cross over is use the left hand for keyboard shortcuts, I wish blender had a command line.
Yeah trying to go from fusion to blender has been tough..theres so much from fusion i wish worked the same in blender

I knew Autodesk made complex programs. But I didn't know that they are so many and so damn complex. I had to learn Fusion 360 and Maya for 2 of my classes and I struggled. Mad respect to those who know how to use any of their programs professionally

This is an extremely important video. I've been using autodesk for a long time and when I saw the Adobe apps video... I just felt... underwhelmed. I can't help but feel that they were the kind of things that a hipster would bludgeon me with these facts. Yeah-- adobe is important, but the level of work and complexity that is possible on a computer is astronomically higher than Adobe could do. And there simply wasn't any way I could explain this on the level of detail that you could do Humtog. Adobe is cool, but Autodesk makes the world go round.

yt suggested this video to me and i needed to see just because i'm an architect which has to work with 3 of these bugged and really expensive programs. It is really lovely how autodesk created an portfolio that dominates the market doing the bare minimum, and no other company can face it, or maybe i can choose working on paper like humans did 5000000 years ago (: (Nice video btw, i liked)

Simply wow! I had no idea Autodesk had soooo many products. nearly half seem identical to me and if I were some of these design careers I would have no idea which one to pick. I have been using Maya for over 20 years so hat one I understand

Had no idea Autodesk now owns the Shotgun CMS. I used that software in beta form for my company from 2010 - 13. Was definitely useful for a small 3D startup. Hope the original team made big when they were bought.
Did not know 90% of these. I'm pretty sure Autodesk doesn't own sketchbook anymore, but overall an amazing video!

Very informative video, i enjoyed watching it! I myself learned maya a couple years ago, and its a powerfull tool that im still using regularly... same goes for max. Maya is obviously the best choice for animation and while max is great for modeling, Houdini does enable you to do even more crazy things like procedural modeling and much more (stock houdini can do stuff, you would need a lot of plugins for in Maya. Its actually mindboggling:D). Thats why im just now in the process of switching to it as my main tool. So my conclusion: If you are already using maya or max for modeling, it might be worthwhile to investigate houdini, and i would advise anyone who wants to or is learning modeling in one of those to Autodesk programms, to continue that and maybe start looking into houdini on the side, because It really changed my abilities in modeling! I wish everyone a pleasant day!! :)

Amazing thank you. I know a few of these applications very well but some of them were just names before this.
The only part that had my eye twitching though was when you used the word “software” in a singular form so often. Saying “a software” is like saying “a music” - you can understand it but it sounds wrong since it’s an uncountable noun. I do hear it used this way more often now, though usually by non-native speakers. I think it could end up later as an example where the language changes through common usage. But it drives me nuts right now! 😜
Did I just miss it, or did you not include Autodesk Eagle? Used for circuit design and board layout and 3D board rendering and evaluation.

Thanks for noticing. I somehow missed it while making the original research of the video. By the time I noticed it and wanted to badly add it to the video as it is something unique, it was too late and entire video was basically complete. Now it exists in the video as just as an image in the last part of the video.
Autodesk Vault was a fairly big omission as well. Interesting video though seeing someone's perspective of Autodesk from outside of the Autodesk ecosystem.
Technically Eagle doesn't exist anymore as it's been absorbed into Fusion 360.
@Leo Warren - Thats how I originally missed it as I didn't see it in their site among products. And that is why it was included at the end along with all other "plugins, addons etc". But, it was a unique and interesting software, thus, I should have included it.
