- This is the incredible story of how India made a supersonic fighter jet in the 1950s amidst the crazy geopolitics of that time involving the geopolitics of 12 countries spread across 5 continents.
This video was made after 1.5 months of intense research, 2 RTI fillings, 2 months of 3D modelling and a 4 months of editing. Yes, the narrator in the video tells a smaller time frame, but that was because voiceover was done with those time frames as expectations. This video took more than 2 years to produce working on and off on this when I get time.

First of all, happy Independence day to all Indians. Today is a good day to say that in geopolitics one’s Independence is guaranteed by having weapons like Marut. If you do not have them, you will lose your liberty to those who have them. This is why it is important for all democracies to be self-sufficient in defense.
Secondly, yes the plane actually looked shiny metallic like shown in the rendering. You can also notice this mirror-like reflectivity in the black and white pics and videos. Beautiful, isn’t it? Unfortunately, you can see it with shiny skin only at a museum in Germany. They have preserved it for Kurt Tank’s legacy. There are also a few in India including one in HAL museum in Bangalore, but they painted over it.
*BACKSTORY*
Now a bit about myself. I am a quality focused youtuber from India who makes on average just two videos per year. Overall it took me 2 years from start to end of this project! Not continuous 2 years, but on and off. Check the date on the RTI application shown at 00:20 if you don’t believe. This is the most high effort content I have made till now and funnily, while starting this project, I thought it will be done in a month!
This video is a make or break project for me. If it is successful I can make more consistently by hiring a team, otherwise, I will have to stop these types of high effort videos as it’s too expensive and time consuming to make.
I had thought I would write the script in 2 days because I knew the story from what I read years ago, but It took me over 1.5 months to research and write the script. This is because all the articles about Marut on the internet were superficial. They hardly had any details. They simply mention that the UK asked for more money which we refused and thus Marut failed. No detail on why they asked for more, how much money was asked, why we refused and what alternative action we took etc.
I had to send Right to Information filings to the government of India to get some information that was not available anywhere. I have shown one of the RTI filings at 00:20 in this video. Still many questions remain unanswered like why was that French Engine refused while it had much more power than Marut needed. But I can guarantee you that you will not find any other video or article with more information than my video as of today.
Then there was the problem of lack of any content about this plane. There were no videos of this plane in existence except for that 30 seconds black and white low quality video I showed at 6:54. So, I had to start from creating the 3D model to show how it looked. As far as I know, this is the first time someone has made a realistic 3D model of this plane. So, this is the first time people are getting a chance to see what it looked like!
The photos of this plane that were available were also not only black and white but so blurred/distorted that they were unusable and thus I had to enhance over 200 photos one by one painstakingly such that not even the photographer who took that photo would not have seen it in this much clarity. I know most of the pics still look a bit cartoonish, but trust me, they were way worse before enhancement and coloring. And all black and white pics you saw are not original, but enhanced black and white ones.
The main reason why this took this long to produce was 3D. I had never done a project with 3D animation before, thus it took waaay longer than expected to complete it. Thrice during the production, I gave up on this project for months because of it. At this stage there was no way to even go back and do it without 3D because I had used up all the videos and pics available of this plane to fill the rest of the timeline. Thus there were literal blanks at those sections of the video.
The production of this video was pretty much similar to the production of Marut. I had chewed bigger than I could bite by choosing to do 3D, similar to how Marut wanted Mach 2, and trying to achieve that proved expensive and time consuming.
So, this is why I am really excited to share this documentary with you all. I want to make more such videos, but the biggest problem is the TH-cam algorithm’s unpredictability. I have burned my hands several times making what I consider as good videos, but then the algorithm did not pick it up. This danger is what prevents me and many other creators from investing so much effort in making videos.

Singlehandedly producing an entire documentary is itself a challenge. And then you go and do it in such high quality.
Being willing to go so far to build an entire 3D model of the entire aircraft. This is the kind effort which deserves recognition. India needs more high effort documentaries like this❤.

This is because often people only want to make one or two videos, and not having a youtube channel means their video will not get much views. It took me 2 days to write the Skelton script of Marut Files, but then it took two of us 45 days to research and get all facts. So, we need volunteer contributors to make it possible to create such videos regularly. I have many such ideas that I am not able to release just due to the amount of time it takes to research them.

As an Indian my national pride is eclipsed by the admiration for the sheer precision and acumen of German engineering. This is incredible. German engineers were like incense, spreading their aroma of brilliance wherever they fled after the war.
These German engineers were perfect for India. They knew how to design and build sophsticated in such a way that they could be built in India. They know how to teach. They knew how do build the basics. All you need is aluminum sheet metal, some welding etc.

As an Indian we should be proud of the bribery, corruption and the ability to destroy anything that is good and working. Great job by the defence ministry in never launching this jet engine and never allowing those Germans to create an aviation manufacturing industry in India. We honestly thank Henning Holck Larsen Christian Soren Toubro in giving us L&T and leaving the shareholding to the India employees who stole everything from the workers once they became bosses.

I'm an aviation enthusiast but I've never even _heard_ of the HAL HF-24 Marut until today! The Marut is one of the most strikingly beautiful airplanes I have ever seen! My favorite jets are The B-58, F-104, BEC Lightning, Avro Vulcan, F-35B (because I work on it) and now the HAL HF-24 Marut! What a beauty!
Kurt Tank not only designed the Marut but he and many members of his design team taught fluid dynamics at IISc during their stay in Bangalore helping out Prof Satish Dhawan who had pioneered this field of study in India.
My father used to work for HAL and he used to tell us about this Marut fighter and he was not happy when HAL started LCA in 1983. HAL & India lost many talented work force after 1980 & we are still struggling to develop engines. Marut is beautiful design compared to Tejas.

My dad quit HAL in 80's. Who worked as Supervisor in motor division and started working with KPTCL/KEB. Retired as EE meter squad.

Another stark example of how, due to lack of long term vision and perseverance, a great opportunity was lost. This would have been a huge economic accelerator for India.

It's crazy that India went on to develop extremely complex rocket engines that now fly spaceships to Mars - but never got around to developing a simple jet engine!

A very well made docu video. Too sad that India could have had its own Mach 2 aircraft for just a sanction of 1.5 million pounds then, and Nehru was ill advised then.
And the voice and narration were appropriate and engaging one's attention, without monotony and boredom pushing the listener away.

Didn't really know that we as Indians were really ahead in terms of manufacturing and undertaking such projects of immense importance in the field of Defense (especially Aircraft design). This video has given so many inputs that I wonder if we had pursued the Project Marut to its rightful closure with the right Jet engine being mounted in it, we could also have been leaders in Fighter Jet manufacturing!! Yes, I was also surprised when even aviation students and defense enthusiasts considering Tejas as India's first fighter jet and almost no one living in HAL colony in Bangalore also knew about Marut when I was there for research. Even in their Museum, it was a neglected showpiece.
Our authorities have a typical attitude of relegating the most marvellous pieces of our country.into oblivion Hardly do we hear even about the existence of Maruti. Not to mention the decades- delayed LCA or ALH Projects.
I live next to one of the surviving models on display in a park. It is a machine that has fascinated me for years. Beautiful in every way.
What a wonderful film. I have researched this aircraft for over a decade now, and I pass its static display everyday on my way to work - and yet, the video has managed to cover more than I thought I knew. Fantastic research, effort and attention to detail.
Marut is certainly a feather in India and HAL's cap, and a painful reminder of corruption within India's governance and bureaucracy.
Its because internet articles where we read do not cover things in depth. And most youtube videos are also made based on those articles. I started the same way, but quickly realized it does not even answer basic questions, so I had to research on my own.

The biggest problem of India's technology is, the leaders responsible to fund 'RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT'.

Didn't you just watch the whole documentary, they gave lot of reasons(then your brain cell) as to why it failed even with one of the best avaition creators. You think creating engine or designing is a walk in the park and if unsuccessful it's the reservation fault(caste system mentality, clearly holding grudge against less developed society). On top of it did those German developers always said that because their's more indian and less German that's why the project is failing. Yes, also Marathahalli in Bangalore is named after Marut. Most people living there itself dont know it. It used to be Marut-Halli because Maruts were designed and assembled there. Thanks.

There is no consensus on the etymology only a bunch of modern urban myths including the birthplace of Marut jet fighter, crashed marut jet fighter, Maratha (empire) encampment, St Martha's hospital, Hanuman(Marut is another name) temple, plus two historical stone reliefs, one in that area and another at a different location dated to 14th and 11th century.(But they are unclear if this was the area because precolonial Indians did not have cartography(or did they?))
At any rate, take claims coming out of Indian history academic or non academic with a heap of salt because we have not invested into primary research.

The land survey records of 1890s show the name of marathahalli, doddanekundi etc , so it's just a false info .a visit to the taluk office will answer that!!!

I think this is best short documentary that I’ve seen. As a child and teenager, I often mistook this plane ✈️ as foreign made but I never knew it’s history. Poor government decisions and procrastination has led to a sad demise of this sleek fighter jet ✈️ I want you to make a similar video about Tejas fighter. Btw after a delay of 40 years it’s finally paved it’s way to the IAF as it’s replacing the ageing MIG-21s . It’s like karma, what goes comes back! Long live Tejas and legacy of HAL Marut.❤
I consider myself as a defense enthusiast but even I didn't know many of the facts surrounding the aircraft that belongnged to my own country. Such a brilliant representation. Kudos!

I talked to many Indian defense enthusiasts. When I ask them what is the first Indian fighterjet, most of them say Tejas. I went to HAL Bangalore, and in its colony asksed few people and they also didnt know. Its as if there was a collective amnesia about Marut.
Then, when I started making the project, I thought it would be an easy video. I thought research would be done in two days. But, it took 1.5 months because all articles online were superficial. They were saying same things without any details on why we didn't choose a particular engine, why we didn't try other things etc. There were lot of unanswered questions. I wonder why no journalist picked this up.
Then, I had to do the hard research, and that's how it took 1.5 months to just write the script. I can assure you that you wouldn't find any article, or any video as of today about Marut that has more details than my video.
There is still some unanswered questions like why we refused the French offer. There is no detail about this anywhere. I interviewed few people who worked at HAL. They don't know. I made two RTIs to HAL and Defense. They didnt answer saying classified, or dodged the question. There is still a lot of mystery that cannot be answered logically.
I knew already some of the facts surrounding Marut. I knew the story how a good aircraft failed to meet expectations because of the geo political pressures. I knew that the lack of foresight by the political leadership and the airforce killed a platform that had so much potential.
I believe, the reason no journalist ever picked this story because they were afraid of unraveling some national secrets which might upset the leadership. Just like many other mystories of the country.
Even we Bangladeshis 🇧🇩 didn't know about the Marut Aircraft took out Pakistani Airfields in 1971. We thought it was the Migs that destroyed those military Airports. Thank you for explaining the full story. Love from 🇧🇩
Another fact:
During one of it's trial by HAL, a Marut plane had crashed in a small village near Bangalore. Later, people started calling that place 'Maruthalli'.
That place is known as one of Bangalore's most prominent locations today - 'Marathahalli'.😊

My uncle was in 220 Sqn IAF (Desert Tigers) and flew HF-24 Maruts in the 1970s and during the Bangladesh War in 1971 from the Hashimara & Bagdogra Airbases. He later flew Mig 23/27s and ended up commanding the Sqn in the late 80s and 90s at Jodhpur. He remembers it as a good but underpowered aircraft, sub-sonic in straight flight but achieving MACH 1+ in dives (a la the de Havilland Vampire, India's first jet and which he had flown in the 1960s) for the reasons reported in this documentary. There are some unconfirmed reports that the DRDO wants to work on a Marut II and develop a new fighter based on this 1960s design.

I think the engines werent indigenous and thats the only reason it failed we have a example at Poona in Kamla Nehru Park at deccan the tires are from dunlop.

As someone who had been offered a job designing engines for GE in the mid 60s, I truly appreciate the effort put into this video, and the historical details and research required have surely paid off in an infomative and interesting work. Kudos. No. I did not accept the offer, and elected a different career path outside of aerospace, despite having cross-trained through engines, airframe, hydraulics, instrumentation, electric, and fuel systems, in the USAF. No regrets, other than those sponsored by the unanswerable what if, of it all.
I wonder how many lost pieces of military equipment are out there, that were originally produced by countries not known for such industry. This plane from india, the osorio tank from brazil, etc.

F-35's are not that particular great piece of engineering, it is over engineered and wont have a long periode before it becomes obsolete.

Yes and after HF24, India stopped inhouse design. For a long time until we started the tejas project back in the 80s. Interestingly it still had a similar issue. Sanctions and indecision is something that is a veil that cover a lot indian military projects. Now its less so.

Yes, he was way ahead of the time. I am amazed by how he was able to create Marut from scratch in India and how "usable" it turned out. It is not usual for the first version of a jet to be this good. If a chance for second version was given, it would perhaps be among the best in the World.
If the Axis had won we would be 50 years ahead and probably have cured cancer by now as they despised the bureaucracies and plutocracies that plagued the democracies back then and plague the modern world today

I have to agree with you! I’ve been a warplane enthusiast for 58 years, and to say my knowledge of Marut was minuscule- and I’m a major fan of Kurt Tank.

This is the first time I am hearing the full story about Marut. I was there when India announced that it has produced the first supersonic aircraft. But Indian media hid the fact that the plane was designed by a German.
not only Indian plane even US, Soviet, French, and British developed their fighters using Nazi engineers and scientists.

During a 2week business trip to Bangalore in 2019, I made a special trip to the HAL open air aircraft museum. Upon entering the exhibition, I stumbled upon this remarkable aircraft. The sign next to the plane mentioned Kurt Tank. I even explained his name to Indian visitors standing next to me. It was a pity, though, that the Marut on show was painted in a low quality silver paint. Nevertheless, it was a great experience and certainly worth the visit.

The biggest cost to many advanced fighter programs is the engine. Not funding that even if it cost more than the development of the rest of the plane was the biggest short-sighted move. Buying out the Egyptian engine team being the next (which would have had the added benefit of also having a proper home-grown engine instead of an imported one). And now they're stuck still trying to develop an indigenous jet engine sufficient enough to power their Tejas, because jet engine tech is almost as guarded as stealth tech.
truth is that not only foreign company, but till then even the Indian politicians and babus realized that its more profitable for them to import the whole plane then engines

I work with buyers all the time and the basic truth is that some people do not know how to shop for sh!t or they are scandalously cheap! I get some guys that come to repair their machines and they take one and say I got this in the US and not happy because of this, I bought this other one in England and am not happy because of that reason... And then they take the sh!ttiest tool ever and they say; this is the best tool I have ever owned, this guy gave it to me! Of course it is the best because he did not pay for it! In this case the Indian government is so cheap, it reminds me of these wonkers that in order to convince them that something is so good and so cheap, you have to hit them over the head with it

It's a pity that the *over ambitious goals* of our armed forces are still there to this day. Other projects like MBT Arjun (even after having beaten T-90s in its MK2 version) also met the same fate as Marut.
The import lobby in our country is really very strong, and has deep pockets. Good that present govt is finally giving them a tough time.

The demands are not overambitious. The demands are calculated based on what is available to Pakistan and China and how to win the war. One cannot compromise quality for Deshbhakti, without good weapons and strong military, there will not be any Desh for Bhakti.
Well india operates around 124 arjun mk1 MBTs and 114 arjun Mk2 MBTs, which is definitely not that low. The reason more weren't order is because india is going to build its own future MBT, the FRCV's will be ordered in around 1700 of numbers and 300-500 zorawar light tank will be ordered. so theres no space for arjun in the future as more future proof MBTs will be inducted.
