  • Just a basic step by step on how to do an oil change on your Gen2 4.0T. I had a buddy come by at midnight needing an oil change before he went out of town so I thought I'd shoot this really quick.

I like doing all my oil changes and take my time and like you I'm probably more thorough than the Audi tech that is rushing through it because s/he knows the process like the back of their hand, but also has 12 other vehicles waiting to get done. Not sure about the history of your SQ8 and where it may have been serviced before, but unless it came from the factory with the damage, I'm guessing someone rushing through an oil change may have had something to do with it and I can almost guarantee that someone else doing and oil change wouldn't have even bothered doing the repair. I regularly change the oil on my A7 3.0 engine with an extractor but looking to upgrade to the SQ8 and your video gives me great insight on what to expect. Absolutely loved everything about your video! Your tone, the way you explained everything, your subtle humor about bad camera work under the car (which in my opinion can be tricky as you lay there upside down, but you clearly show all the details anyone would need to see to get this job done). Very well done and thorough! I've subscribed to your channel!

I do very much appreciate the time you took to share. As you can imagine setting up and shooting a video then doing the edit can take some time. I so very much enjoy that it lands in the hands of so many great people like yourself. I do have more SQ8 content coming later this year. Thanks for the sub.

Thank you for your video. I am going from a q7 to an sq7 and wondered about maintenance. Definitely more involved

Brilliant vid mate, i was told that you need to use a extractor aswell as draining sump plug? Did you just drain sump and refill with oil ? Thanks for vid

So sorry for the late reply. I didn't need an extractor. The oil amount removed and measured was the total amount of oil the tech specs say the car holds. From there, added oil and done

How come you didn't try the suction pump method? And your appears to be an older model year. The 2023 doesn't have the side plastic covers.

Hi I do actually have a vac system. But for a few reasons.. I Chose to not use and show on video. 1 not everyone will have a vac system 2. as you mentioned not every car can use the system. 3 from what I've experienced you tend to get quite a bit more oil out from the pan than from the lift method.

I read before on some Porsche forums that the 4.0 V8 engines have some sort of mesh shaped filter that prevent the vac from reaching the lowest point in the oil pan. This is consistent with your observation that more oil is retrieved from the drain plug than the extraction vac.@@howididit7196

@@howididit7196I am super excited after watching this video. I would love to know exactly which Audi was this. I have a 2021 SQ7 and really want to use the extraction method to remove the oil because that bottom pan is a pain in the ass to take off and reinstall. What got me excited is at the very end you seem to point to a dipstick plug at the right side of the engine. I have been trying to find out if the SQ7 had this and was under the impression it did not. If your video was for an SQ7 4.0 gasoline engine they spec the oil change quantity is 10 qts. However, if you put 10 qts in the electronic dipstick with go nuts telling you the engine has too much oil in it. I find it works with 9.5 qts. I would really appreciate if you could let me know which car this was you did the oil change on. The other odd thing I noticed is ……. If it is an SQ7 2021 or newer ….. Audi did not sell it with the plastic side cover trim you see in your video. Prior to buying my SQ7 I had a regular 2018 Q7. That year Q7 came with the plastic side covers along the inside of the fenders like you show. When I got my SQ7 I did not like the look of the engine bay without those panels and I actually bought them from Audi (as if I was putting them in a regular Q7). Lastly, when you went to remove the cross beam you unplugged the airbag sensors. I was warned not to do that as it might cause an airbag warning light in the instrument cluster. Curious if that happened for you. You don’t need to actually unplug those airbag sensors. They unclip from the beam without unplugging them. I hope you see this comment and can let me know which Audi you worked on. Thanking you in advance.
EDIT: I just looked again at the beginning of the video so I see it was an SQ8 …. What year😂

Hi Peter - SQ8 but you can do the extraction method on that and the SQ7 - But keep in mind you can't get all 10 quarts out this is why you don't add back 10 quarts. The situation seems to be where you can only get out 9 to 9.5 on the extraction.

@@howididit7196 Thanks for getting back to me. What year was that SQ8?
I have yet to use the extraction method on my SQ7 but I would like to try it to avoid having to deal with the bottom pan. Any oil change I did so far has been done by draining from the bottom plug. Audi calls for 10 quarts for an oil change and my experience is if you put a full 10 quarts in then the engine is slightly over full. The electronic gauge will keep having the system warn you that there is too much oil in the engine. I have had to pull the drain plug and let out about a 1/4 to 1/2 a quart to get rid of the warning message. It appears to me that no matter how long you let it drain you won’t be able to put back 10 full quarts. You yourself said in your video that you only put 8.75 to 9 quarts in when you did that oil change after using the drain plug. I will probably try using the extractor and just pay close attention to what comes out of the engine. If I can get 9 to 9.5 quarts out I will be fine.
Audi/VW can be a bit “vague” when it comes to giving spec quantity for oil changes. I have done oil changes on a VW Jetta and an Atlas and in both cases the owner’s manual gives an “approximate” amount for the oil change volume. On both cars I had to put in a full quart to 1.75 quarts more than what the book called for to get the oil to show full on an actual dipstick. Both of those cars I had used the extraction method.
When I owned a Q7 I was able to buy a real dipstick from Audi to work with the 3.0 V6 however they do not sell a dipstick for the 4.0 V8 win the SQ7. I never spotted that little plug you showed in your video for where you say a dipstick would go.
Lastly, in my search for info on how to change the oil with an extractor I did find a spec sheet online from Audi for the V8 in the SQ7 …… it actually states “change oil by drain only”.
My guess is that the suction tube on an extractor won’t be able to get to the bottom of the oil pan to remove all the oil.
When I do my next oil change I will see how much oil comes out with the extraction method and come back and report here in the comments.
I am a bit old for crawling around under the car and dealing with all those screw’s holding that bottom protection pan and unfortunately I don’t have a lift in my garage. I would have the oil change done at the dealer but the pissed me off the first time I had them do it. They spilt oil on top of the engine and around the oil fill neck. I also had a bad experience at another dealer when I had the Q7. They reset the oil service light and did not actually change the oil or filter. I caught them out because I had installed a dipstick and they didn’t notice. I knew right away when I drove the car away from the dealer that the engine didn’t sound like it had fresh oil. When I got home and pulled the dipstick you could see the oil was black. A couple of days later I changed the oil myself and made video of it and brought the filter and a water bottle full of oil back to the dealership. They were super embarrassed about it. The mechanic got fired because he kept logging oil changes and taking the oil and filters for himself.

Yes if you give me a few months to research the best part numbers and get a little time in the garage I'll do this.
