He didn't have confidence, he had a delusion. I shoot PRS in tactical, regularly shooting past 1000 yards with a 223. I have a hunting rifle that is reliably sub MOA with my handloads. I will NOT shoot at an animal past 400 yards. That is absolutely irresponsible, there is SO much that can go wrong, SO much that you can't account for. There are two psychological routes you can go, you either only remember your hits or you only remember your misses. I have first round hits past 1000 yards, but I also have misses. Same at 800, 600, 500, etc. For hunting, you MUST remember your misses, that's what counts.

I struggle in the opposite direction. I think far too much about my Mrs. and sometimes I forget about my hits. My confidence goes way down out in the field when there’s an animal out there. My last hunting trip I missed an antelope at 350 yards. The next day I hit one exactly where I wanted to at 270. For me, what is important is learning from your Mrs. so that you can improve upon your mistakes. Jim was spot on when he noticed that the guys scope was dialed in all the way to 25. If you had a spotter to help him out, or if he was able to see his impact, he likely would’ve been able to make the adjustment and done far better.
Glad you posted this. I was instructing a guy on pistol, he said he was great with a rifle, I just think great. Said he hit a deer at 500 yards. No fukn way was my immediate thought, this guy is 14” groups at 7 yards with a pistol!!
I also thought it was pretty ignorant to take a deer at that distance for many reasons. But, he is clueless, doesn’t even know his drop at that distance and was just lying…lot of fish stories out there.

I use a Tikka t3x super lite in 300 win mag for hunting moose and I don’t find it that bad

He actually made some hits, so it isn't actually worse. The .22 guy just struck a chord with some people and the internet gave him a break for some unknown reason.
They're shooting targets at 300 yards(definitely NOT 700) in the 22LR Precision Rifle matches. A 22LR at 225 yds has about the same trajectory as a 308 Win has at 850.

Nope, you shouldn't overestimate any time you are hunting. You need to be 100% sure of what you are going to shoot and where you are going to hit. If he has spent "million dollars on ammo" he should be out shooting in high heat, extreme cold, high winds, and EVERYTHING in between. Just watch how he is shooting, his follow through it atrocious and horrible! He should honestly take a few classes and actually learn a thing or two about long range shooting.
This is a classic case of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

He never mentioned his MOS. His wife wears the Combat Arms pants in the family. Most Marine Infantry spend zero time on a scoped bolt gun. Thus, he’s no different than anyone who purchases a typical hunting rifle, and mid budget scope. I doubt he ever shot at those ranges before either. So much wrong with this.

God bless that man for trying. But it is abundantly obvious that he has no proper precision rifle training. Terrible fundamentals, very bad trigger control, no rear support, No follow-through, no ability to shoot from a raised position (tripod / shooting sticks) etc etc.
I would agree that making 100 out of 100 shots in the situation that you put him in would be tough. But he certainly didn’t have the skill to do it.

The worst part is him still thinking he can take 600 yrd shots at the end🤦♂️. Alot of those hits he made were only after 5-10 tries and Jim calling the shots. If he only got 1 try on each target his percentage would plummet even further than the 8% on targets past 400.

I had a pompous friend of a friend talking about his elk hunt. He was bragging about how he dropped his elk at 627 yards off hand while it was walking. I called BS and he wouldn’t back down. I asked him what he was shooting and he told me a 300wm. I said okay, what was your dope. He didn’t know what I was talking about. I looked at him and said your DROP. He said oh, I held 4 inches high. Now remember, he thinks that his rifle only drops 4 inches at 600 and he said he dropped his elk off hand while it was moving. 😂😂😂
I had a guy come in to the sporting goods store I worked at 30 years ago telling me he shot a deer, on the run, offhand with a 30-30 & no scope at 500 yards. My reply was, "That proves there is a God & he was pissed at that deer that day!" Then I said "Most have no clue what 500 yards is." He said "Yeh, the gong at Rio Salado(gun club) is way out there!" My reply was "You just missed by 200 yards bebause the gong at RS is set at 300 yards, NOT 500!"
The club I belong to has a 800 yard range. Members constantly misjudge distances. Many would think that the 100 yard impact berm was 200 yards away.
He's a tool, but holding 4 inches high doesn't mean that your rifle only drops 4 inches since holdover is above whatever range you're zeroed to.
He very well could have just not like your thinking. He probably held 4” high and jerked at the pull and added another 40” My buddy is similar. He starts shooting his bow about a week before season and if he shoots a 6” group he’s good 😂 But you put a flipping live deer in front of him and that lucky sb never seems to miss.

At our ranch, we make the client shoot in the 4 classic positions and find their maximum range in each one. Most people arent qualified to shoot 75 yards offhand.
Pretty sure I couldn’t. I don’t practice offhand. Yet. I’m still trying to cement my fundamentals more deeply.
@@LFDNC Anyone can hit a target from the bench with a 36 power scope, bipod, bags, etc. When I see a guy anchor a big whitetail running flat out, with an open sight rifle, that's impressive. I hike with my dogs on the Natl Forest and shoot every morning. Anything from a stock 10/22 to an MI Garand. I just grab one and shoot it. Get yourself winded and see if you can still hit anything? The Indians here have never been in a stand in their whole life. They hunt on foot, on the ground, on the move. The kinds of standing shots they pull off on running game,while huffing and puffing and with some very sketchy rifles is impressive to
me.
@@LFDNC Keep in mind. I'm saying your maximum range is that which you can put round after round into a target the size of the vitals of the animal you will be hunting. If you can hit a pie plate sized target at 75-100 yards? I'm impressed.

I may have to start doing cardio while I shoot, with my rifle unloaded of course. I can’t run around too much, but there is stuff I can do. That’s a good thing to keep in mind, thanks.

When someone starts making claims about hunting at 600 yards, this is what you can expect when they show up to the range. There are, of course, a few highly trained exceptions, but you won't find them bragging in the comment sections of youtube videos.

Don’t be fooled by people’s claims of service this guy I highly doubt was in the military at all. He has made rookie mistakes that even rookies don’t make unless boyfriend or older brother or friends is pranking them.

It only happens to newbies of rifles too. Some one that shoots lots is not a newbie trained is not a newbie.
There are a few other things but that right there told me everything I needed to know.

Backfire, As a former Marine Primary marksmanship instructor (PMI) and was a Competitive shooter in the Marine Corps, along with being a life long outdoorsman (Hunter), I was outright astonished at Mike the Marines performance, to put it mildly. Understandably, shooting positions do change with the environments and conditions presented (combat, competition, hunting). But I saw nothing applied to basic marksmanship fundamentals that would indicate a person of proficient skills. I’m embarrassed and irritated that this individual would present himself in that manner and fashion. We spoke briefly in the Ammon, Idaho Cabelas’s where you inquired about the Ruger American Gen 2. Should you comeback to the area please look me up. Take care and keep shooting straight.

Appreciate the support to my comment. The basics hold true in any environment. The KD course built on basic marksmanship skills and the known distances. Dope books were essential in this, weather, wind and sun/cloud conditions affect aim point. These were all identified and calculated into your dope. Familiarity with the weapon another factor along with optic adjustments. I really have a hard time accepting the shooter didn’t factor in these. General knowledge of weapons system is critical for hunting or any other environment. Thank goodness he didn’t claim a specialized shooting MOS 😅. Maybe a pizza box status 🤣😂
Too many Marines riding on the reputation of the Corps and at this point I’m questioning where that reputation comes from.
I’m glad to hear an instructor say this. I’m very amateur, but I see some significant issues. Am I insane or is he tensing up right before each shot?
@@LFDNC The recoil was killing him. He began anticipating the recoil and flincking and his day was done. The 300 win mag is a heaving recoiling cartridge, pair that with a super lightweight rifle WITHOUT a MZ brake and you have a shoulder killer. After the first 7 to 10 shots or so his shoulder was done and so was any hope for great accuracy. No way he could have made it to 100 shots like that, not without folding a blanket between his shoulder and the stock.
I live in northern Utah and close shots (under 100 yards) are rarely an opportunity for me. Most shots at deer and elk are between 150 -250 yards for myself and family. That being said, I feel VERY confident with all of my "average Joe" hunting rifles out to 300+ yards. At 400 yards I feel my hit rate for a milk jug (yes, we have commonly practiced this very way) drops to about 6 or 7 hits out of 10 shots from hunting positions depending on the wind. My brother and I for years have said that we would pay for lunch if anyone can prove to us...with a regular hunting rifle (not a dedicated long range bench gun) that they can hit 7 or 8 out of 10 shots at a milk jug at 500 yards or beyond. In my opinion, a person needs to have a better than 70% chance of an accurate hit in the vitals in order to justify the shot at an animal. For me, I am at about 40-50% at 500 yards.
Wind starts really affecting things beyond 400 yards and terrain and unsupported shooting positions that are common in the field even more so. I also have to mention using a 300 magnum to try this challenge. Recoil and muzzle blast is, in my opinion, one of the most detrimental elements of precision accuracy when hunting. Trying to shoot 100 rounds of 300 magnum without a compensator and hold it all together while dealing with the scope kiss on the forehead is too much for most guys. A 6.5 Creedmoor, .243, 7mm-08, etc. would have been a better choice most likely.
That being said, props to this guy for trying. He seems like a nice fellow and it was fun content to watch. Those who are hating on him need to lighten up. Great job as always Jim!
The reason we're hating on him is because he's the guy stepping up to be the whipping boy for all the armchair snipers that wound animals by taking unethical shots. If the entire context of this wasn't hunting, I'd agree with you. But the context IS hunting, and this guy talks about 600-yard shots while not being able to reliably hit targets under 300 yards.

@@MrMagnaniman I agree with you. While hunting, most would be "snipers" have no business shooting at game at those distances. I would have put his field abilities at 200 yards or so. I find wounded game every season and I am sure many of those are due to hunters shooting beyond their abilities.
I knew at that moment when that “marine” scoped himself, his claims became invalid. Watching this Marine miss almost every shot after claiming that he is a “World Class Shooter” is cringe.

I used to hold a shooting contest with milk jugs placed at 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500. 20 to 30 contestants a year for 5 years. Hunting rifles only and scope magnification limited to 9 power. The course was only run 3 times and it was the same guy in 3 different years. It is not as easy as TH-cam would make you think.
After 5 shots with 300wm... that barrel is a wet noodle. Doesnt take into account chamber temp (and subsequent ammo temp) or shooter recoil fatigue or even shooter vision fatigue
pretty sure it took them a few hours to make all those shots. Not that our boy here wasn't wore out. He brought the wrong tool though. 300wm was much more gun than needed to get it done at 600. 6.5 would be the better choice on todays shelves. heck for milk jugs a nice bolt 223 will get it done, bit harder on the wind calls though.

Would love to see more of these challenges though! Would be cool to see a handful of people try to engage like 10-20 targets between 300-400 yds and see their hit percentage

Eric, Peiter, WhoTeeWho and Jim and a few others, had a competition not to long ago at Gavin's Ultimate Reloaders ranch and were shooting out to distance. I believe it was called the Rock Chuck Olympics . Even world class shooters have their difficulties in real world conditions and not having their own highly specialized equipment. Love watching these professionals shoot but some of their rifles and equipment cost as much a brand new civic,, LOL

Don't worry, many are. Although many are suspicious of this being staged, or a guy that obviously doesnt know much, being cherrypicked to represent the long range crowd.
I’m not a long range hunter, I consider anything past 600 long range, but I at least take a tripod and rear bag with me. If Mike had used them I bet his hit percentage would have been higher.
I watched a well known channel on an Idaho black bear hunt attempted shots on multiple bears way out of their effective range and actually ran out of ammunition. The buddy who had already filled one tag but held a second, took a backup shot hitting the bear. Right after commented that he thought he had a bear down. Unethical across the board in my opinion and it is all the rage these days.

Not very difficult If he was combat arms. To put it into perspective 1 tow missile cost just under 100,000 dollars. It adds up quick and I have had exercises where my company has put 30- 40,000rds down range. I'm sure you can imagine the ammo cost adds up.

He's lifting his head as soon as the shot goes off, perhaps trying to spot his hits/misses outside of the scope instead of staying on target through the scope. A bad habit.
I always shot from a sitting bench with my 300 win mag. One day ended up shooting somewhere different and layed down. You guesses it! First shot SCOPED! Im proud of this Marine. He showed up and didnt make excuses. Great teaching video.
Many of us think we can hit long distance, but there are too many factors that change when in the field like wind, elevation, animal behavior, etc. I was on a hunt in Northern Utah a few years back and had a shot at a nice buck at 320 yards. Had practiced up to 500 with confidence. No wind, animal not stressed, level shot, prone with bipod, had all the time in the world. Shot for the heart and hit it in the head. I thought it was the gun but ended up being the shooter. I am glad I did not wound the buck but sad I shot so poorly. Changed my mind about long range shooting. Thank you so much for this video. Great way to shed light on long range shooting.
Over this last year I got to see a number of people I knew miss shots they thought they had and it’s made me realize most people shouldn’t be shooting past 150 yards especially when they have no practice and just think they shoot good from hitting a piece of paper at 50 yards twice
I go out here in the desert & shoot human head sized rocks at long range, with varying terrain & then get my rangefinder out to verify my range estimations. Learning one's limits & capabilities is the best practice. Sight in most legitimate hunting rounds at 25 yards & one can hold dead on out to 300 because the bullet will never be more than 5 inches above or below line of sight. Drop significantly increases after 300 yards for most rifle calibers. I use 4-12 or bigger scopes, most with a simple duplex reticle. 3-9s on my 22s except my Ruger 22LR Precision Rifle which has a 4-16, dial turret scope & a 30MOA rail mount. I do like Vortex's Dead Hold reticle with holdover points for simplicity IF one knows the range & his cartridge ballistics.
Soon as i saw the tikka and heard the caliber i knew the results.
My gunshop had a pro day last week at a local range allowing anyone who wanted to shoot a 308 20" Steyr SBS at a golf ball 235 yards away.
EVERY shooter hit it. EVERY SHOOTER. Some had never fired a rifle. Factory rifle, factory ammo.
I bet they sold a lot of rifles that day. lol

@@inalaska1709really big round in a light bolt action rifle = felt recoil and flinch. he is saying that its easier to shoot a smaller round out of a relatively heavier gun that uses recoil springs to dampen some of the blast. it might have been easier for the shooter to get 100 out of 100 in theory
nobody can accurately shoot 100 shots in an afternoon with a 300 win mag in a 7lb gun. @@inalaska1709 the thing just recoils way too hard.
When he got scoped with his 1st shot, missing the 2nd was no shock.
That was a very fun video to watch. Thank you Mike for being part of this experiment. I don't think anyone could hit 100/100 in a single day's shoot. Fatigue would win out. I think Mike was doomed by scoping himself. That has to play with ones psyche, especially with it being filmed. It might be editing that causes this observation: Mike raised his off the cheek of the stock very quickly at the rifle report on the video. What helps me is purposely keeping my target in the scope after the shot. Even in hunting situations, I watch the deer through the scope. It it drops watch to make sure it doesn't get up. If it runs, I follow it through the scope until I lose it in the brush. I feel this training prevents me from raising my head as I pull the trigger.
This is now by far my favorite TH-cam channel.

Having been a marine and having made both 500 and 600 yard shots with 5.56. Even if I had an accurized rifle setup, I still wouldn't make the claim that I'd make 100 out of 100 shots, man.

Mike’s ethical range is within 200 yards. Taking into consideration that while actually hunting his heart rate and breathing would be elevated. I’ve never met a person that could back up their claims.
Maybe you just hang around with a bunch of bullsh!tters if you've "never met a person that could back up their claims"! 300 yards is easy. It gets much more difficult over 300. Sight in dead on at 25yds & the bullet is never more than 5 inches above or below the line of sight out to 300 with most centerfire cartridges. This means even you could hold dead on & still hit the kill zone of most big game animals out to 300. I've never missed the 300 yard plate at Rio Salado Gun Club in Mesa AZ with any centerfire rifle & I have hit it with a rifle caliber, long barreled, scoped TC Contender pistol. Get a laser range finder & know your cartridge's trajectory to eliminate the guesswork. People are hitting little targets at 300 yds now with a 22 LR(Lapua has a new 400yd "long range" 22LR cartidge out now) & ya won't even place at a Precision Rifle match if ya can't shoot MOA at 1,000 with a centerfire rifle. Hunting is a different story simply because few calibers retain enough energy at extreme ranges for a reliable kill, which is where the ethical part comes into play.
Yea. I'll BS a bit but I try to make it obvious I'm leg pulling fer fun when I do. Most of the folk I hang with are the same. If one of us straight face says where good for a shoot we mean it, if we bet you a backflip fer a beer on it we might be leg pullin. I wouldn't shoot game past 200 and in the PNW around me there's hardly a spot I'd get much chance without crossing the Cascades anyway not that I'm even a avid hunter but I like to know I could. Within that range Is a non issue and honestly I don't think you should be allowed to hunt if it is fer you.
I play with my 22lr out to 300(drops some 13ft out there so you need a canted scope base and some glass that has some elevation adjustment) so the bigger calibers that shoot flatter and buck the wind better are a breeze. In fact I've heard it said that 200yds with a 22lr is good practice for 308 at 1k roughly fer wind call practice anyway drop matches up for 400/1000 but drops the easy part anyway. Which is great since I don't have 1kyds easily available but my local range 10min away has 200yds and 22 is cheap and fun well lets ignore how much I sunk in my "trainer" It's kind of paid fer itself if you consider cost saved per trigger pull and ignore how much more I've pulled the trigger since I consider that a good thing.

I guided hunts for years and hunted with some guys that started "long range hunting" i no longer hunt with them. There is way more wounded game and spoiled meat than anyone knows or will admit to. Its disgusting
yup. a big reason mule deer are disappearing. these dudes go out and shoot the legs off anything they can see out the the window of their truck until they eventually get lucky.
Wow! I have only once taken a shot over 200 yards while hunting deer. It was when I was 22 with an open sight Marlin 30-30 at about 400 yards guesstimated (no range finder back then). I would never try that again but I was successful that one time. I used a lot of Tennessee elevation. Luckily, it was not windy and didn't have to use Kentucky windage. Now, I am over 70 and use a scope. I am amazed at the amount of wiggle I see when hunting and even target shooting. I have always thought I could do take another 400 yard shot Now, I am not sure and I would definitely not try it while hunting. I did learn a lot from you and watching Mike. Rear support for the rifle is what I will be concentrating on for target shooting and hunting. But I will also be looking at ranging. Thank you very much. By the way, I got the highest score at the range in basic training at age 18. It got me the only weekend pass for the entire class. Open sights up to 300 meters.

I am so happy that there was lots of talk about conditions. As an avid and fairly competant hunter I have been in situations where a 300 yard shot is possible and have harvested game at close to this distance. That being said I've also hunted in conditions where a 100 yard shot is out of the question. I really enjoy your content, keep up the good work Thanks

I honestly wouldn't say 600 yards for myself as the farthest I have ever had to shoot in a hunting scenario was 310 yards. It was with a 308 CZ550 American. With a Nikon pro-staff scope. but my average shot at an animal is an average of 125 yards. And that's thought out my life of gun hunting. I currently only have 1 rifle that I would take past 300 yards. As of lately, my average distance has been under 100 yards on my property. I'm a firm believer that you have to know your rifle and ammo setup and what works best for you and your gun as far as ammo and optics and gun go. That all being said, I wouldn't think of doing this challenge. But I do want to give this guy credit for trying and showing up. Great video.

Thank you for your service. In a challenge like this, I certainly would not have brought a shoulder cannon. I would have opted for a 6.5x284 with handloaded ammo. A brake would have been a plus.
Props to Backfire for making this challenge. I hope all hunters do this challenge and try this multiple times per year before hunting season.
To play devil’s advocate, this guy’s hit percentages would’ve likely been a lot higher if he’d (a) brought a rear bag (as noted in the video), and (b) brought a 6.5 or .243 or something like that. The fact that he likely had some jitters from being scoped and was suffering from recoil fatigue and still managed to make the number of impacts he made is actually somewhat impressive. Also, his scope choice (and magnification) and his rifle choice are neither one ideal for this sort of sustained, long distance shooting. Key word being sustained.
A heavy 30 caliber is way better than a smaller caliber EXCEPT when it comes to recoil. The REAL long range rifles(over 1,000 yards) are .416 caliber or larger because nothing beats mass for energy & velocity retention. I shoot a 280 Remington with a 162 gr aero bullet because it slays a 270 Win & eventually outperforms a 165 gr 30.06, once the range gets out to around 450--500 yards. Belted magnums are for people who've watched way too many youtube videos & enjoy self abuse from the recoil.

It might be but it loses energy quickly because of the light bullet weight. IF the 6.5 CM is so GR8, why do all the top Precision Rifle match shooters shoot a 6mm dasher? Small caliber is ok for long range but NOT the best hunting cartridges because of low retained energy. 1,000 yards is doable with little bullets but that doesn't make them a good choice for hunting, especially at long ranges & 600 should be about max for any hunting to have an ethical kill. One might kill an elk or bear with a 22LR but it must be at very close range & a very accurate brain shot!

Actually people have switched to primarily running a 375 cheytac or cheytac improved. Some are still using 338’s in elr competitions and doing well. So… your claims arent facts. What you are talking about with the 280, 270, and 30-06 is the bc of the bullet. Low bc means it will slow down faster due to more drag while flying. Using a high bc bullet makes a big difference. I shoot belted magnums and have been doing so for a long time. You dont like them? Cool. Thats your choice. Some people like them. With a brake on a magnum theres less recoil than your 280 lol! Yet again… someone on the internet spewing hate and opinions instead of facts.

99 percent of hunters out there cant hit 100 percent out to 300 yards much less 600. Unfortunately (as the comments have already confirmed) most will see this and just say they could do better than this guy when in reality this guy is average. I constantly preach max range of 300 yards and this is why. Great video.

Very nice video. Terrain can make a big difference. Like looking over a large body of water, can be very hard to judge when all looks similar. I used to live in Utah in the seventies and loved it. Love all the west. Many beautiful areas. Unfortunately I'm in the east and so far my longest shooting distance at the moment is a bit over 400yds. I figure my hunting range is approximately ½ to ⅔ of my consistent target range. This past fall I told my hunting buddies that 200yds was my limit. I ended up getting a clean kill on a buck at 251yds. I had judged at 225yds. Didn't have time for my range finder. I give this gentleman good credit for being a good sport. I load in spring when the conditions are about the same I the fall so I know, or hope my bullet will go where I aim. Many out there are far better than me and I learn from them. I'm addicted to accuracy and I think that helps some. Thank you again.

I used to brag about my furthest successful shots on deer. Now I'm proud of how close I can get to them.
Shooting animals at long distance isn't hunting it's shooting.
Also, I'm reminded of a particular passage in The Book of The Rifle, by Jim Carmichael. Jim was talking about competitive shooting at long distances. He walked out just in front of the target and checked the wind there. A season veteran told him, now he's getting it. You can't do that while hunting.

What a great video it really puts everything into perspective for a lot of hunters. As a match Director for precision for rifle please matches. I see this kind of thing all the time hunters come out to their first match expecting to do really well and it doesn’t take very long before t Is it hey are humbled and realize just how much they have to learn. If you want to be a better Hunter, precision rifle matches will help you get there.
I am sorry but if you need more than 4x or 6x magnification to shoot inside 300 yards, some fundamental questions needs to be asked. Who in the world other than benchrest shoots 25x on the field??
I've run 4--12 power scopes for 35 years, including on my bolt action Kimber 22LR, 3--9s on both my 10/22s. Even have a 4--16 on my Ruger Precision Rimfire 22 rifle. Have upped to 4--16 on my main 280 Rem hunting rifle & a 6--20 on my 243 for prairie dogs at 300+ yards. Seeing more mirage is the only drawback to a big power scope. I set it in the lower half of the range until I find my target & then zoom it up to see better. 4--6 X is 60s tech bs, really too low for good shot placement at 300yds, before anybody made affordable high quality scopes with GR8 lenses & erectors! Ya can't hit 'em if ya can't see 'em & higher magnification makes shot placement more accurate!!
"Pre-64" means nothing about any Winchesters except the Model 70 bolt action. In 64, they changed it from a Mauser type controlled round feed action with a BIG claw extractor to a Remington type uncontrolled feed, push type action. It was the only gun in Winchester's arsenal that was changed in 64. @@Dougarrowhead

I'm 14, and I got my MARK II GXP Savage 22LR. I used some Blazer ammo and hit a 4-inch target at 300 yards. I was crouching on the floor and used a Field Pod Max to hold my rifle. I had maxed out my scope turrets in elevation, so I had to do some Kentucky windage and aim a bit high over the target. It took me about 10 tries, but then I heard a ding, and it fell over. My scope has no mil dots or hash marks, just a plain old X reticle.
22lr is where it's at man. I got a safe full of toys and I take my b-14r out more than anything else. Get ya some different ammos to try I like Norma tac-22 fer the cost and maybe save fer a decent glass with a Christmas tree type reticle and you'll be entertained for decades, something like the Arken LH4 seems good value point, cant say how it compares yet as I'm still waiting for mine in the mail. My brother has their ep4 and it's a close match to my Vortex strike eagle I have on the b-14r, honestly can't say which ones better. Figured this LH4 should fit on my 17hmr just fine so I don't have to keep moving my diamondback around now that I've more riffles than glass again.
@@chublez The scope I've got is a Bushnell 4500 Elite. I will have to check out those scopes. I have tried Norma ammo, but I never really long range shot with it, just plinked with it, so I'll have to get some more for long range.
@@chublez I looked at the B-14R, and it's a nice looking rifle. My dad is looking at a CZ 457 22lr to let me shoot, and I did some research on the CZ. It seems like a nice rifle.
This was an excellent video on reality. At the range, on the bench, with no wind, I shoot well out to 600 yards with my 300 PRC. However, in the field hunting, with terrain, weather, wind, elevation, and physical exertion, my maximum shooting range is generally one half to one third that depending on the conditions and me. What I have learned from you and Ron Spomer, dial in your rifle in at the range, but practice in hunting scenarios. The Army has a saying, most rifles are better than the man standing behind it. That applies to my Bergara HMR 300 PRC. Great content. Thank you.

Be cool to keep this series going , people that think they can coming to try it . Another series that would be interesting is asking people their "ethical" ranges and then tailor the challenge to that and seeing how full of it they are
I landed a kill shot on an elk at 430 yards (checked with 2 rangefinders by myself and my hunting partner next to me) while it was trotting. It took me almost 3 minutes watching it going back and forth, making sure I had the right shot. And I had just worked up my load and gotten my dope at those exact ranges in that exact weather and at that altitude a week before. I had a clear shot with no brush between us, and I was shooting prone off of a bipod on top of a rise down into a gently sloping valley with no appreciable wind in any direction. It was ideal. Even under those ideal conditions, that's a very long shot. I've shot with enough people to know that very few "I grew up with guns and hunting" shooters even have an inkling of their drop and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn at 200 yards.

I watched the 30-06 video where you mentioned the call out and immediately came here to have my suspicions confirmed. Over confidence with military vets and shooting is so common it’s ridiculous. I was Army infantry for 6 years and spent a lot of time shooting in training and a fair amount shooting in combat.
It took me two years to really get proficient enough with rifle marksmanship where I could consistently qualify expert, but that “expert” qualification is a lot different than precision shooting. That’s practical accuracy where you’re proficient enough to hit a 3 foot silhouette at varying distances from 25-300 36 out of 40 times. This is more about confidence and suppression than it is threading a needle.
The marines are especially big on the confidence factor and you’ll almost always hear them trash army marksmanship because they shoot to 500 instead of 300 for their qual. What they don’t tell you is that 500 target is the size of a damn jeep. Again, it’s an exercise in building confidence in the weapon system and self more than a game of precision shooting.
There are certainly precision shooters in the military. I once had an opportunity to share some range time with a former CAG guy that absolutely horrified me witnessing what he could do. Rangers, SEALs , MARSOC, SF, and even snipers in regular infantry units get specialized training and trigger time that do make them capable precision shooters. But since I’ve been shooting as a civilian for the last 8 years, I’ve seen many marksmen in my local community who are more capable of precise shooting than a lot of guys I served with.
All that to say, I respected your channel before this because you always give in depth and seemingly unbiased information. After this I respect you for giving this guy an opportunity to put his money where his mouth was and being gracious enough not to just rip him constantly when he clearly failed to live up to his own hype. Although he did fall on his face a bit, props to him for being man enough to at least attempt to do it also.
Good on him for turning up and having a go. But there are some significant issues with his understanding of marksmanship principles. ‘The shot must be released and followed through without undue disturbance to the firers position’. Significant headlift/ lack of cheek weld and snatching the trigger. Gotta do those basics right before you start shooting past 100m.
That course design looked teally fun. I would love to practice on that with the varied ranges and conditions. As of right now my ethical distance is under 200 yards and that course seems to be a good way to practice and increase that.
Kinda what I expected for percentages at specific range. I live in europe, and most shots are done under 100m, unless you hunt mountain goats you just don't have a clear line of sight much further. 600 yards feels wild to me, I'd love to try it, but most shooting ranges are max 100m. Many hunters I know never shot furter than 100m.

I will say I thought the timed shots were a bit unrealistic. I’ve passed dozens of shots on animals because the window was too short or I was just not as set up as I needed to be. If I wasn’t steady in the timeframe laid out you could call it a miss but I wasn’t coming off safe until I felt dialed and my crosshairs were stable, or at least staying on the jug.

Good point. However, he actually had a much higher hit percentage on the few timed shots than the shots that were not timed.
I'm just an average guy, I've been shooting since I was about 3 years old, and I'm confident I could shoot 100 gallon jugs at 300 yards with my 270, and be north of 50% accuracy. No idea what this guy was on.
I am not an expert sharp shooter. I would not have tried this challenge. I am very very comfortable with my 270, and I'm very comfortable saying I'd shoot circles around this guy. But hitting 100% accuracy at varying ranges? Incredibly unlikely. Dude scoped himself in the first 5 seconds, I knew it was over. I had to watch it again just to make sure.
Having done a lot of hunting and regular PRS matches. This is equivalent to cleaning a one day PRS match. Milk jugs are just under 6 in wide (0.3 mil at 600). Centrer hold leaves you 3in of wind deflection given everything else is perfect. If you cant clean a prs regional march with a hunting rifle you cant do this either.
