This is a 1920s Hoosier Cabinet that belonged that has been in the same family for almost 100 years. The owner asked me to refinish this piece so she could use it to display her family photos. I will strip most of the layers of paint, sand the cabinet, and apply several new coats of paint. Thank you for all the support.

I reported it as ell.
Yep, just had one come in 36 minutes ago. I had asked you a question about a Hoosier cabinet 12 days ago, and 36 minutes ago the reply "HIT ME UP -..." is posted as a reply.
I reported that scammer/spammer that tried to contact me. Have a great day Barry
I realized pretty quickly that you aren’t the kind of guy that would repy to a nice comment with ”HIT ME UP”.
I think we realize by now that your channel goes beyond furniture restoration. 🪚🪛🔨Connection, empathy, and generosity are manifest in every video. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself. 🙋♀️
Isn’t he special?
Or are we mostly like him?
If the world knew we had more Barry’s it would be a much better place.
Don’t let “them” tell us we are divided 🕊
Wow, thank you so much!
🤍🤍🤍
Can’t agree more, thanks for wording it beautifully. @elaineholthaus2 and Barry, stay rich of heart, ur work is and inspiration for me

I inherited my mother's Hoosier that had sat for years in an old shanty. I had it restored and it was so nice to be able to use it again. I loved the metal slide-out area to make scones, pies, cookies, or whatever. The left door on the top half had a flower bin with a sifter in it and it was perfect for baking. So many wonderful memories were made around that cabinet. Mother's was not heavy wood because they could not afford that. My father was a coal miner. My sweetest memory of that cabinet was one evening when my brother, sister and I were playing hide and seek. I was a tiny little girl, so my mother pushed all her baking needs aside and put me in the roll-top area to hide me. I used it hard after I got it because I loved baking. My son now has it displayed in his home and is so proud to have it.
I loved reading this!
That Hoosier cabinet was in rough shape to start with, but you did a superb job of bringing it back to life! I was surprised by the mother's request to leave the doors off the finished product, but it is a lovely display cabinet. It was very kind of you to paint the doors for her in the event that she changed her mind down the road.
She was planning to display photos
Yes, very kind indeed.
I used that Emerald paint to paint kitchen cabinets, baseboards and doors in my grandmother’s house, built in 1950. Great stuff and it dried so nice and smooth and hard. Expensive but recommended! It will wipe clean for years and years.
This was a very special project, but also one of the most frustrating, and difficult. Hoping you will share some of your own challenges and what it took to overcome them. Thank you for all the support. Barry
Beautifully done. I like that you restored the doors too, in case she changes her mind in the future.
And you met the challenges quite well- it needs the doors 😄
❤
Beautiful job. I noticed you didn’t do a lead test before removing the paint. Did you do one off screen or did the age dictate it probably wasn’t lead paint.
@@catherinebiermann7940lead test at the beginning after the simplisafe part.
Everything going on today and the internet being as brutal as it is sometimes, every time I watch one of your episodes, it's like a sanctuary place, a place of quiet restfulness and contemplation.. thanks Barry.
Wow. Thank you
💯
Very true ❤️
The internet is just an extension of the world. There are good places and bad places, you choose where you want to reside. This is definitely one of the good places.
Spot on comment!!!
This has brought back so many memories… in a different life, in a different country, a newly married me moved to my husband’s place. The kitchen was tiny, doubled as the entryway, and had room for a sink, foldout table barely big enough for two, a stove, a fridge, and a cabinet just like this one. I loved it. I was perfect.
Love this story
Julia, it may have been small but it was filled with love.
@@SisterShirley it truly was. More than thirty years and we are still together.
OK I cried thinking of her Mother remembering her daughter each time she sees this sweet Hoosier. Seeing the three layers of Decals brought back memories of my own of times spent with members of my own family that have passed on. Thank you for your storied pieces. The music and natural beauty you add is always perfect. Love your purple Clematis and your beautiful home. Have a Blessed 4th of July and GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Beautiful work. So sad that the original client didn't get to enjoy its restoration, but I'm sure her Mom must take comfort in this piece and your heartfelt efforts.
Hope you enjoyed this
I cried my eyes out at the reveal. I’m so glad that you persevered and finished this, because I know that your client will be delighted with it. It will have such a special place in her heart and will be a beautiful memorial for her precious daughter. How do I know this? I lost my daughter five years ago on the 7th of July. Every little thing she loved or treasured is now incredibly special to me. Material things don’t replace them, but they evoke some beautiful memories. Life will never be the same for this lady, but the memories will keep her going. You have helped that happen Barry, thank you xxxx
I can't imagine anything worse than losing a child. I'm so sorry for your loss. May your precious daughter rest in peace. 🙏
@beawild Thank you very much for your kindness. x.
@@lyndseybeaumont7301 You're welcome. 🙋♀
Barry, I love it. I almost cried thinking of the mom enjoying that cabinet....and all the time thinking of her daughter. Thank you. 💖
Very nice restoration, it's great to see old period furniture restored instead of being thrown away
Thank you so much
Hi Barry, you did justice to that cabinet, but, most of all, you did justice to the young woman’s memory. It actually brought me to tears seeing it completed. You not only bring your talents into your work but your heart as well. That makes you different from the rest. When I’m challenged or totally frustrated, prayers work every time. I’m not preaching, I’m just answering truthfully. Thank you for being you. Joyce from Connecticut, USA ❤️🙏🇺🇸
Very emotional episode Barry. Your choice of music always seems to suit the piece you’re refinishing. What a fantastic job you did on this. The little pictures that were originally on this Hoosier must’ve been very sweet at the time. I bet this mother is going to be so happy that you have beautifully restored her daughters furniture. Thank you for sharing this. 😔❤️
Thank you for showing us your labor of love on this challenging piece. It is a testament that first appearances often hide hidden value whether in furniture or people. What a gorgeous clematis!
This had me in tears, you outdid yourself on this one, it will be treasured by the family for many years to come. Another great job 👏
Wow, thank you!
As soon as I started hearing this story, I got very emotional for that family in their loss. This cabinet reminded me of the one my dad made for me and my sister when we were children. A place to use for playing, it was a great addition to our childhood activities. Maybe it was the shape of this piece, but also the decals on it that made me think of my childhood cabinet. I was also thinking of the daughter who did not live to see it restored. I think she knows about it.
This one was very melancholy. I love hoosier cabinets. If it brings the mother some closure, than I'm happy you were able to clean and refinish the cabinet.
I wish more men were like you; thoughtful, caring and considerate. ❤️🌷
That was an incredibly beautiful restoration. I think leaving the upper cabinet doors off was a great idea that will trend after seeing this. Hooisers aren't great for kitchens anymore, but they do make wonderful "conversation pieces" when using them to display things. You are a good and faithful friend, Barry.
I took out the cabinets in my cottage and replaced them with a Hoosier cabinet and a china hutch. Added a buffet for counter space.
It looks so nice. Well done! And your clematis looks fabulous!
Barry you are truly an earth angel. What a blessing you are to this woman and her family. Another beautiful job love this
I don’t restore furniture, but I have a challenging project that’s been dragging on (and is currently in time out): a hand appliquéd quilt for my husband. Because I want it to be perfect, I keep putting off working on it until everything else is perfect (lighting is just right, I have lots of energy and don’t have a migraine brewing/recovering from a migraine, etc etc.). Your video reminded me that sometimes you just need to get stuck in, and keep going. The end result will be amazing. So thank you!
I have plenty of pieces in timeout
I watched this one before Barry, your care and kind heart speaks to me. ❤❤❤
Hi Barry, What a lot of work! Glad you pushed thru and got it done. Your customer will be pleased. So sad about her daughter.
Barry - you did a lovely job as always, breathing new life into this poor Hoosier. It looks so refreshed.
On another note, I am incredibly jealous of your clematis - its stunning 😊😊
Thank you! I keep building more so it has a place to grow
Aw Barry this one for sure brought a tear to my eye. My heart goes to to the mother. If right were right, no parent should ever be in that position. I hope the piece brings her some comfort. ❤🩹
Thank you
Thank you for your kindness to this family.
I comment with tears in my eyes…this made me so emotional. I think it’s because you brought back the memories of my Mother when she was younger. She did a lot of furniture rescue and she was a whiz at reupholstering!
No Mom’s still with us but barely. I pray for God to take her. It’s not fair, dementia has taken her away. She was a blessing to so many people in addition to our family. I heard one of the Nurses in the ER telling the Dr. that she was a pillar of our community. To him She was just a broken old Woman.
One day God will take her and make her whole again like you did for that Hoosier. Thank you for not giving up, God bless you!❤
I love hearing the stories behind some of your pieces. Whether they're tragic, sad, happy, or funny, it all adds to the character of the piece. It makes it where you don't just decide if you like the aesthetics of a piece or not but how it makes you feel when you see it.
You made her mother very happy. The cabinet will probably be a memorial to her daughter.
Omg. You have really outdone yourself. This was an amazing and special piece ❤️. Very nice!!
Marie
Beautiful restoration. I am sure she would have loved all of your hard work. Her family will appreciate this piece for many years. Your clematis is just stunning.
Those decorative decals bring back memories. In the late '50s my dad built us a wooden toy chest, painted it white & added decals with nursery rhyme characters.
Beautiful, a fitting tribute to her daughter. ❤
This will be that family's most cherished piece. Your effort in showing it respect I know will be appreciated. I'm so sorry for their loss and I know its a long road towards being okay again.
I know this was extremely challenging, but it looks amazing!
Aww Barry. What a wonderful job with such meaning.
It’s really special watching you work, I admire your patience and focus on details.
I love this piece, more so because of what it means to the family it came from.
Love from Australia ❤
The music was really fitting for this video. It brought great feelings of nostalgia and the passing of generations.
I really appreciate that
What a special memory in honor of her daughter. You did an absolutely beautiful job on this. Wonderful work and video
Thank you so much!
I have sitting in my garage my grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet which is well over 100 years old. I’ve been dragging it around the US for 45 years just waiting to find the time to refinish it. Your video was the inspiration I need to give this another look.
as an amateur furniture restorer I can totally see what a massive effort this was. well done 👏
OMG, I have the same Lane Cedar chest/ jewelry box from my senior year of high school!! The transformation was amazing. I,too, have an old Hoosier cabinet that was my Moms. My nephew restored it for me. My personal choice was to leave it as original as possible. You did a beautiful job and I was impressed by the way you respected the owners wishes to leave the doors off. Beautiful job sir!!!
Such a wonderful job Barry, as always. So glad you were able to complete what the customer wanted. I’m sure that her family will cherish this piece and the warm memories it holds.
What a story... So many fantastic edits. Such an enjoyable video & then 13:06 mark I see you spray painting on the gorgeous, lush, healthy, green lawn!!! I almost unsubscribed Bud!!!! What a bang up job you did on this one Barry!!! You're a Champion!!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!!
P.S. you need to start a 3rd. Channel. Just raw footage of paint stripping, boiling & polishing hardware, scraping clips, etc. 1M+ Views on each video, watch!!!!
So glad you didn't give up! You did a great job bringing this Hoosier back to life!!
You are the first person that I have seen make the holes around the rim of the paint can. My father taught me that when I was his assistant in all his wood working projects. I see so many people just letting the paint spill over the rim.
Love your videos. Your home looks beautiful and your purple clematis is gorgeous.
I learned this from a viewer
How do you keep the paint from drying out with the holes in the can?
So sad that she passed away. I'm glad you restored the Hoosier cabinet because it looks beautiful!
Wow what a beautiful cabinet you made form the old Hoosier cabinet. My grandma had one and it had those characters on it, I recognized the elephant right away. I am sure the mother will love this for the rest of her life. Oh and your clematis is gorgeous!
What a beautiful tribute to a friend. Glad you didn't stop. Am always delighted with your work and stories
This is beautiful, a fitting tribute. Hoosier cabinets were so much a part of kitchens in 1920s and 1930s. I am glad the mother is using it
Hi Barry, a loving restoration with such a sad story told with true empathy and your gentle voice, thank you.😇💕👍
This is beautifully done. The tribute to her is very moving. Bless you x
Barry, you gave so much to a grieving mother!!! Time, talent,, caring, empathy and love. WOW!! You are more than a creative talent. You are a role model for what all human beings should strive to be. Thank you.
You brought this piece back from the brink of death! I would personally have liked to see it with all the doors back on, but everyone has different ideas. It was nice that you refinished them, too, in case in the future someone wants a more authentic look. Lovely piece!
I had one of these when I lived in Romania. They call them "kitchen closets." I loved it. You did a beautiful restoration
I love what you did to that Hoosier. Giving it a new life and purpose. Well done!
Awesome! Thanks for sticking with it!
Thank you for being such a compassionate man Barry. She will treasure being able to touch it every day. 😢🤗❤️🌈🕊️
You've already had the comments that could convey my appreciation for how you restored this hoosier!!! I'm glad that you included the doors!!! 😊❤❤❤
Very nicely done!
Turned out very sweet and such a touching and poignant history.
Barry, this piece came out beautiful. It’s a good thing that you took on the challenge and did not give up. It definitely show’s your good character. Great video!👍
So emotionally charged. I loved it so much. The cranes are a nice touch.
A beautiful restoration. This one was personal and I appreciate that, I love that you took the time to show family that you care. You have a wonderful day
My mother had a custom made Hosier with the flour (with the built in sifter) and sugar containers built in. My sis still has it in her house.
This just made me cry so very much. Very well done Barry. Big hugs, all our love, sympathy and remembrance of a daughter lost to soon to a mama who's heart grieves deeply. From a mama who understands
A really beautiful restoration, done with love and attention to detail. Thanks, for sharing!
Thank you
So touching. May God calm the hearts and thoughts of her family
That was a labor of love. You have demonstrated your respect and care for others. Now the cabinet that anyone would love to own.
My heart breaks for her loss….you honor the loss with your skill and thoughtful touch😔☮️☮️☮️
Out of all the pieces I have seen you restore/refinish, I think this is my favorite. It's so beautiful. 💜💜
You deserve a gold medal for this one. 🏅
Beautiful, Barry! As always. I’m sure the mom will appreciate displaying family heirlooms in it. And if she ever wants the doors again, you’ve made that possible. So kind of you.
Elaine, I my thoughts also, the way he brought back life in to this piece for the family is beyond words.❤❤❤❤❤
I watch furniture restoration videos before I fall asleep at night. Great way to unwind.
Thank you for showing to her family, giving them comfort 🎉❤
You did such a fine job! The cabinet looks terrific.
A beautiful finish to a Hoosier. We have one in its original wood, very much like this one. We've kept it intact for the day they will be true dinosaurs.
This is the second viewing of this video for me. I missed the fact of this woman passing last time for whatever reason. What a lovely memory for her Mom, she did what her child wanted. Bless you Barry, as this was a very challenging restoration. ❤
I'm from Indiana (a Hoosier😊) I remember my grandmother using a Hoosier cabnet in her farm kitchen in the 50's. They were very practical & loved by women who were lucky enough to have one. Nice job saving that one.
I feel your pain Barry. I restored my husband's family hooser cabinet last year, and although it was not painted, and had previous been worked on, the pressure of doing a family keepsake, and the personal drive to not screw anything up and maintain its integrity for future generations was enormous. (Funny how working with in those constraints adds to the stress we feel). I sure the woman who originally commissioned you is in fact smiling down on you with pride and appreciation for the job you did, and that her family will continue to love and treasure this piece for many generations to come.
Congratulations on another phenomenal restoration and touching video.
I wasn’t too hopeful for a positive outcome, but your client and you were right. That’s stunning.
Simply beautiful Barry. So pleased that you didn't stop and persevered to allow the true nature of this piece to shine through. I hope it serves the family well in remembrance of a loved lost daughter.
Nicely done! What a beautiful way to remember her daughter.
Beautifully done! What a touching story… I hope she enjoys the memories with this. Take care!❤
This was truly a labor of love. It’s lovely.
What a touching story... I had tears in my eyes watching it. It was a wonderful tribute to a daughter gone too soon. I hope the mother finds some comfort in the completed project. It's terrible to lose a child, no matter how old the child is. Barry, you showed great sensitivity in presenting this story to us. Thank you.
Another magnificent improvement to a valued old piece of furniture. I have no words to describe how much your attention to detail has transformed this piece. Amazing work Barry! ❤
I love watching your channel so much. I find them very informative and very relaxing too. Ive done some restoration to a few of my nannas and parents old furniture and still have it. I wish i could find such beautiful old pieces like these all at over here. Thanks for all your hard work Barry. Love from Australia. X
You did right by honoring the lady and her daughter's legacy. I would have left the doors on, but I understand it was the client's decision. Appreciate that you restored the doors anyway. Great work!
Beautiful work. A labor of love as well as professionalism.
Unbelievably gorgeous. You did a fantastic job.
Barry wgat a heart warming video! You have created an epic connection and memory for her mother. I have to say Barry you have touched so many of us with your thoughtful kindness! We definitely need more people like you in this world! Thank you for sharing your awesome talent and creations with us. Absolutely, beautiful job! ❤😊
Oh gosh, Barry, you've got me teary eyed again. I cannot imagine losing a daughter but you've given her Mother a beautiful gift. Is that a Jackmanii clematis? I had a huge one in my yard once and it was a beauty. Thanks for a great video!
Barry, that was a rough one, and it's amazing! As usual, you knocked it out of the park my friend...what an honor to her memory❤
got emotional watching this AMAZING!!! NO WORDS!!
Wow. Hope you have good memories
I wish there was a LOVE button instead of just a ‘Like’! I LOVE Your Videos, Your Care of the pieces, and Workmanship❣️
Absolutely beautiful transformation - I think the original creator would be proud to know that this piece is still so beautiful! Sending you a big hug straight from Minas Gerais -Brazil.
This video is in your top 5 to date… if not my favorite. Maybe it was the satisfying paint removal. The little owls and other stickers. It just needed work and a bit of love. Pieces like this set your videos apart from other channels. And I watch several routinely. They all have a niche. There is a relaxing, gentle spirit to yours… and I appreciate your story telling. Thanks for sharing your talents Barry!!
Nadie diría que es el mismo mueble.
Increíble transformación 😊
