  • I found some old furniture in the trash and decided to make an apothecary cabinet for storing some of my woodworking tools in the shop.

Yes, I know I spelled Mohogany wrong inside the drawer. I guess I did it right for the rest of the video but mistakes happen. When I mention that I have never done something before, I am not looking for pity or a break for my mistakes along the way. I just hope that by sharing some of my work, you may be encouraged to take on a new project. I always appreciate all of your support. Thank you for your kindness. Barry

Beautiful cabinet, for future reference, you can buy glass pliers, and hold the other side of the glass after cutting, and tap on the pliers to break. A clean cut, also can help to cut both sides of the glass first. Don't feel bad, I only know from helping my mom with strained glass, for years. Don't be so hard on yourself, it's a beautiful piece. ❤

After I first got into working with wood, I started making small gifts for family/friends. I have 1 family member who likes to point out every flaw they can find. A few years go by and they ask me how come I've never made them anything...I said Because I wouldn't burden you with such subpar workmanship. You deserve much finer things.

Oh Barry, how can you say it’s far from perfect? It is completely perfect. One day, in years to come, your children will look at it and say, “our father made that with pieces given to him from our grandfather”. They will love it and treasure it because you made it with such love, care and passion. To them it will be a most wondrous and perfect piece, believe me. They are so lucky to have something created by such a special man. I absolutely love it. ❤

This is the first time I have seen your channel! I am surely impressed with your workmanship! I am a 74 year old widow whose husband died last year. He was not a woodworker, but a car body repairman. We lacked just six weeks celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. He worked with metal, like you do with wood. He was a perfectionist when it came to his job! I’ve watched in awe many times as he turned wrecked cars back into beautiful machines! Watching you today brought back many memories! I hope that your channel will continue to inspire me. I look forward to seeing what else you do. As you used your hands to lovingly make this gorgeous cabinet, I couldn’t help but think of Bill and how proud I was of him. I know your family will treasure this piece for years to come! My best to you and I pray you have a very Merry Christmas. Thank you for sharing your skills!

I have to say that I’m glad you don’t have all the fancy tools. Nearly every similar channel I watch has gone over to all the expensive, high-tech tools. I think I’m a pretty typical watcher. I’m interested, I don’t have the space or the means for much woodworking or rehab, but I love watching others make wonderful things. Thank you for staying humble and low-tech. It makes me really look forward to your episodes.

Yes, I for one would watch a so called high tech woodworking video now and again but based on watching them, I would not tackle a project. I would feel so inexperienced and way out of my league with all of the new gadget$ and just not attempt to even try. While I consider the laser thingy you use as high tech, others wouldn't. I can't even seem to get my PC printer to work for more than 10 pages.

OMGosh! I love it not only because it's beautiful but, first, I'm a compulsive organizer, and second, apothecary chests remind me of card catalogs and I LOVE card catalogs. My dad enjoyed a little woodworking. He also saved every nut, screw, bolt, nail, and washer he ever came across all organized and labeled in baby food jars. All the neighbors knew where to go to get any specific thing they needed, easy-peasy and free for the taking. One of the reason I enjoy your videos is that sometimes I get a little reminder of Dad. (He's where I inherited my organizing impulses.) 😊

    • @shericreates
      @shericreates 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Same here. I inherited a garage if tools. Old BIG lathes, band saws, table saw, routers, drill press all the way down to my great, great grandfathers tools. I think one of my favorite is just the planer. An old Stanley hand planer. All the hand saws and hand drills. And yes! 4- 5 gallon buckets of nuts and bolts! I actually went through and cleaned them up and organized them. I use pill bottles for small amounts. He had built a cart with 12 drawers and each drawer has deciders in them. That is where most my nuts and bolts fit into. Sure do miss my Dad!

I'm sure I'm far from the only one who watched this video and cried at the end. Happy tears for the beautiful piece you were able to create from the "trash,"with your family tools. And sad tears for the memories it pulled from my heart. In 1967 a fire raged through our ranch. The house was spared, but many out buildings were destroyed. Among those buildings was an old tool shed. I have many fond memories of building "stuff" in that shed. Tinkering and creating. My grandfather had a tool chest in there full of beautiful old tools we weren't allowed to use. I often opened it and admired them, dreaming of day I would be allowed to use them. I can go there still, and while they no longer exist, the memories sure do. You are being a goodcsteward for your family memories Barry. ❤️ And thanks for your channel. You do a great job.

Sometimes perfection includes beautiful, tiny imperfections imho. An artist is always so hard on his work. This was lovely to watch and beautiful end result. ☺️

Your skills would do your family, proud! It is joy to watch you work and to make use of a good cabinet and make it reusable again. IfI could find an old architect tabletop with angle adjusters, I would turn that into a reading table and desk. Dividing it in half so that I could have my reading material handy as I was doing notes. That way I could slide my chair underneath it if it had adjustable legs. You have inspired me to go on the hunt!

I followed Dashner Design since he started, and followed Thomas Johnson even longer, and I add you to their family. You work like they did, in quiet, thoughtful peace. You music selections backing up the shop sound are like being in your peace filled head/heart as you thought this through. I guess that’s what made it so emotional at the end when you revealed the engraved tribute. 100% artistic from inception to reveal. Your family, your treasure. ❤

    I think this is awesome!
I'm a beginner carpenter and am teaching myself from scratch.
All the other carpentry channels I've seen have are run by people whose skills are way beyond mine, and sometimes it's a bit disheartening, wondering if I'll ever really get the hang of it, let alone get to where they are.
But you're not so far ahead that I can't even see you - but you also you have the skills to make nice-looking, useful things, even if they're not perfectly polished.
It makes me feel like your level is an achievable goal, if I work at it!
I love the tools you use, and your skill using them. This was really nice to watch.

Stumbled upon your video on a cold, dark, tired morning in Copenhagen. Your work reminds me so much of my Dad. And I have been looking for a new hobby for some time now. I just might take up wood work - at the ripe old age of 56. Thank for the inspiration.

It's beautiful and I know your children will love it! The Mohogany makes it even better in my eyes. My late father used to make small wooden pieces for me when I was a child. I only have one little pencil box left (the lid is missing now) and I treasure it. It makes me feel as if I still have one tiny bit of him with me. Miss you Dad!💋💕
