I purchased this old mid-century buffet or partial hutch for $25. It had been painted yellow by the previous owner. In this video, I will remove the old paint with the carbide scraper, detailed scrapers, and dental tools. I enjoy sharing my furniture restoration journey, and whether it's a full restoration or just a refinishing, I trust you will enjoy what I have to share. Thank you for all your support. Barry

This is the best mattress I have ever owned, and I look forward to continuing to work with Birch Living
My favorite...Forrest Gump
Another gem!
This is my first time to your channel, your work is impeccable!!! I will definitely be back, you've also peaked my interest in seeing the video of the piece at the end. A great big thank you for the referral to Birch Living. I've wanted a new mattress for a long time, but couldn't find anything that match the quality of what I had. I am grateful because I need the support of a good mattress. Also,❤the added information at the end!!!
Thank you for the education with wood grains. My father had great knowledge of woods and the love of showing off the beauty in each piece. So glad to see you appreciate that as well.
Barry, you are becoming a sophisticated furniture historian/refinisher/restorer from week to week. You are a teacher as well. That buffet is beautiful in the color Candlelight. It's a lovely design.
Forest Gump. You nailed the stain and finish for this buffet. It is now a work of art.
You never disappoint, Barry. Beautiful job! You should be a teacher. You are so patient, and thorough. Cheers!
I believe he is a teacher here on his channel. 😉
I really liked the shape of this sideboard. Thank goodness you removed the school bus yellow.
Lord have mercy! You are just like my husband. He always has a video playing when he works in the garage. He has 3 TV's set up so he can watch from anywhere in the room! Then I saw your roll top desk! I bought him one for his birthday. The top veneer was coming off so I got it on sale and paid $1100 to get it fixed. It was dated around 1910.
Hi Barry! That buffet looked quite sad with all that ugly yellow paint. It looked like at least part of it was spray paint. The finished product was gorgeous!! You have great talents not only with furniture restoration but also storytelling! I always enjoy your videos! Can't wait for the next one!!!
Aww that yellow was hideous, that piece was begging to have its dignity restored.
Oh Barry, thank you for giving the little brass goat such a good home. I knew he would love Wisconsin. He’s having so much more fun in your home than he was with me.
Hello from rural Norfolk UK. Discovered your channel yesterday and have watched quite a few videos, your style is so relaxing and informative. You have inspired me to 'restore' my two 50s kitchen chairs properly. I purchased a carbide scraper this morning and have spent nearly 3 hours removing old varnish. Thank you for sharing your work.
Lucky you to find it at all. There are so many others doing this now. But you’ve hit the best one! Barry has lots of great, soothing videos. I’m from Melbourne, Australia. He has followers from all over the world. I can’t “do” but I love to watch restorations. Welcome to the club❤️🦘
@@yvonnepagan9912 Thank you.
That's going to be fun, a Barbie dresser, can't wait.😊
Barry, you are the Bob Ross of the Millennium. Your video presentation and voice are so soothing.😊
I second that❤ !!! I was thinking the same thing 😊 he has that soothing tone of voice and artistic flair.
This turned out so beautiful. It sparkles, you could see all that beautiful wood grain😊😊😊
Oh... Forest Gump... I forgot to look for the little brass guy... but I was mesmerized watching the transformation... what a lovely piece in the end!
Hello you dear, dear man. My heart sings when I see such a beautiful restoration. In my mind, the piece looks proud again and so happy to have met you. (I guess I watched it twice, doh.)
Thank you for this
I can understand why this type of refinished piece would sell well. Not only is it beautiful, it is great storage for any room. I never find your little brass figures in your videos because I get too distracted watching you work and forget to look for them, lol.
Your work is amazing. With proper care a well crafted piece of furniture can live for generations. The top of the buffet is absolutely gorgeous, the pattern is beautiful. Keep bringing these “abused” pieces back to life.
My guess was correct, My favorite is Walnut, so rich and warm in color and beautiful grain. This piece is gorgeous! You did a awesome job.
Cherry wood and Forrest Gump my fav. movie of all time.
Run Forrest Run
You took the words right out of my mouth! Great minds think alike! lol!😊
wow, finding out that information about the Tiger Patters and that white oak is real cool. This old dog got taught something new. great work as always.
You took it back to its original beauty, great work! I loved the info about the trees. Where I live, I can’t just go out into the woods to find oak trees. There are no deciduous forests here, only coniferous. I think oak trees are amazing!
Where I live in Canada you see big old Oak trees in the middle of a field, farmers work around them, as they respect just how long it takes them to grow.
@@shamrock4500 That’s wonderful!
Run! forest! run! 🏃♂️ luv that movie
Yay! Barry removes yet more yellow paint from our ecosphere! Thanks, Barry.
You might find it interesting that, around 15:15, that inverted ''v'' shape at the base of the tree could well have been caused by a lightning strike many years ago. The movie was too easy, I got the wood right, and only saw the goat once. I love your little games.
Forrest Gump, who could forget the “Run, Forrest!” Scene😊
What dignity you have restored. I swear, that piece was smiling in the final take.
Thank you so much
This is more than a video for me. It is a tutorial.
Wow. Awesome
@@MadCityModern I have built some of my own furniture when I could not find a piece suited for my needs, but have never really done restoration. But I learned so much just from this one video that I look forward to others.🌼🌼🌼🌼
Candlelight is always a great choice for walnut! The result is beautiful! ❤❤❤
The dark stain may not have been your first choice, but I think it suits this piece perfectly. As ways, thank you for adding to our "tree of knowledge".
It's splendor has been returned!
Very cool, Barry! Can't wait for the Barbie dresser. 😅
Sorry I missed the live. Yellow! How fabulous 💛💛💛💛💛💛
I forgot to look for your little brass animal! Gotta watch again! ;)
Who can forget “Run Forrest, run!”
Your videos are great. Im going to quit now, guess Forrest Gump for the movie, and just sit back and enjoy your work. Thanks Barry. 😉
That’s absolutely beautiful. You always bring out the best of the woods!
Waving hi from far north side Milwaukee County. 👋🏻👋🏻 Grew up in the 1950s-1960s with a carpenter/wood working dad who had a rather large workshop in our basement. Thanks for bringing back memories. That turned out really nice.🤗👍
I watch both furniture restorations and furniture make-overs, and it's always funny to me to see made-over, painted pieces end up in the hands of restorers. You can usually tell which pieces have been painted by a pro vs. a bored houseparent/housespouse with a free weekend. Making it over (nicely) can be really time consuming, so every time I see what I think is a recently made-over piece, I imagine it's only been in one person's possession for a couple of years, so all the effort that went into a well-made-over piece is then undone (almost always rightly so) and the piece is restored to its natural state (or restored up, meaning looking better than it originally did). It's just another funny way to see part of the circle of life, and the cycle of life... The things we do with our life's time and how others experience that outcome, and then how they in turn have someone else's circle interact with theirs. As well as the physical things we cycle through in our lifetimes.
Thank you so much for the visual showing how a quarter sawn pattern is accomplished. Your work is beautiful!
Walnut and Forest Gump. The brass goat stumped me...😂
Now THAT, is a gorgeous piece.
Forrest Gump
Also, as a longtime subscriber, I don't want to become accustomed to your fabulous work. This was again a labor of love, and evidence of your eye for what's possible. Kudos.
Holy jumping’ !! That is an absolutely gorgeous piece now!! Always enjoy your transformations and the peaceful narrative
Walnut. Forrest Gump. I didn't find the goat 😢 Absolutely beautiful! ❤
The piece is beautiful and the movie looks like forest gump.😊
I was glad to see that the hardware came out so good. Sometimes the plating is so far gone that polishing will make the hardware look worse. Good job. I hate when old furniture is painted because it is easier than refinishing.
I agree. Thank you
I love to the videos when you strip paint. This is simply gorgeous.
Forest Gump? That is a beautiful piece.. ❤❤❤
What a beautiful piece.... after your working on it. Also appreciate the 1980s stereo equipment, electric typewriter and television!
The hardware looks like the same as on my federalist desk/card table. I refinished it after my dad died and it was cherry or mahogany. Thank you for this gorgeous grain reveal!
This is the first of your videos I've seen. I'm most impressed. You did a beautiful job.
I love the little bronze goat
I love the buffet, so so pretty! Your workmanship shows in your reveals! Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful ❤
Oops! I was wrong.
Beautiful restoration as always.
Beautiful Restoration! Nice find with the brass coated pulls. Very relaxing video!
You are a wonderful, caring restorer. I love what you do!
Omg love this piece. The grain in the wood is so beautiful.
A Barbie themed dresser is not a controversy. Live it up more, Barry!
❤😊 more Tree talk!
Loved this Barry, thanks x 🏴
I thoroughly enjoy your content. It’s like a hobby I can simply meditate to. I appreciate you.
Can’t wait for the Barbie dresser. I just subscribed so I won’t miss it. I love listening to your soothing voice. Thank you for sharing all the wonderful information you uncover during the restoration process.
WOW! I have no other words to describe the results!!!
Your music, your voice & your whole approach to a piece of furniture brings PEACE … thank you!
(Of course I didn’t get those hidden things! In a good way tho I was daydreaming!)
The yellow antiqued paint was nice but now with the buffet in this rich color it really looks like an expensive piece of furniture ❤. Lots of work but wow what a beautiful result.
♥️🇨🇦
Thank you for explaining more about the trees. You can do more of that in the future.
YOU CAN DO IT WATER BOY
RUN FORREST RUN
The movie is Forest Gump. Nice job Barry, i really like your videos !
Another job well done! Looking forward to the upcoming projects you mentioned. A Barbie themed dresser? That should be interesting!
Turned out absolutely beautiful
Who knew what was hiding underneath that yellow dresser ! 😁🇬🇧❤️
Love you, Barry. You’re a good manL 👍
Thank you kindly
Barry, It's gorgeous! You are a master refinisher!!
That would make a beautiful side board or liquor cabinet!
Everything you do is just magnificant!
Movie is Forest Gump. ( I worked with Tom on " Philadelphia " ) Another masterful job!
“Run Forest! Run!” Forest Gump of course. Great movie. Awesome actors. I liked the yellow as well as my colors in house are gray, white , and yellow. I may or may not be refinishing a dresser and painting it either yellow or white. It’s to hold table linens and” the coffee bar”.
If I hadn't watched you work on the project, I never would have thought that fantastic piece of walnut furniture was the same one. You created a magical piece! I found my spray-on stripper and think I will try to do some magic on a small cabinet: 20 inches x 24 inches x 4 inches deep. It may have been a medicine cabinet. Someone had painted it dirty white and then 'distressed' it by sanding the paint off with no rhythm or reason. I can see where the screws were for a door. I plan to paint it Chinese red for some of my rocks and mineral collection. (Retired science teacher!)
Hello from London. You put on Forrest Gump, my favorite movie. I love watching your videos which are one of a kind and your voice calms me down. I admire your work, every piece of furniture you restored looks amazing.
Now that's my style mid century tradition al
I have my parent's tiger oak round table and matching spindle chairs. Thank you for showing how the wood was cut.
The movie was Forrest Gump. I saw one goat in the drawer near the end of the Birch ad, but didn’t find the other one. 😢 Your buffet turned out beautifully! Wonderful work, Barry!
Barry you under estimate yourself and talents. Beautifully done💙
Forest Gump! :) Beautiful Buffet! I love it!
The buffet reminds me of much of the furniture we had inside military housing 40 years ago. It was old and the thick shellac coating was darkened. I wish I had been educated enough then to know what was underneath all of that dark shellac. It was tuff stuff and I imagine in larger cities anywhere near military bases it is still around. I have a Tiger oak dresser with mirror I rescued from my moms basement that was made by a furniture company in Seattle in the 1920’s. I love it and I love your channel. I look forward to all of your videos and enjoy rewatching my favorites of your older videos. I always seem to see something I think I’ve missed but probably have forgotten. Lol
Beautiful work on the buffet and I appreciated the info at the end about tiger oak because in just the last couple of days I ran across a home tour video of a vintage home with oak trim and the host went on and on about how tiger oak is so special because "they don't make it anymore". Since there are still oak trees all over in the upper Midwest and there are a lot of independent sawmills I could not believe what she was saying. She was from the South, so perhaps it's a regional thing but in MN anyone can still get quarter sawn oak.
Anyway, thank you for freeing that buffet from a trendy paint treatment and truly restoring it to its intended timeless appeal :)
So,so much better than that yellow paint.. beautiful ❤
Beautiful restoration. Really warm and gorgeous. BTW, tiger oak furniture is my absolute favorite.
Run, Forrest, Run!
Unmistakable Forest Gump. Thanks for another very informative video.. great work
Ditto to all ....excellent rescue again!❤
Wow! What a beautiful transformation!💜
I need to find another word for stunning, but it always seems to be the best word for your work!😊
Thank you for teaching about the different cuts of Oak that was actually quite fascinating
Barry, the final finish looks amazing. I love it!
Forest Gump is the movie playing in the background.
Yes
Loved the before look
Hello fellow Madisonian! Happy to have found you; very enjoyable video and work,
Saying Hi!!
I have owned this identical buffet since 1978. Gifted from my mother.
It dates back to the 1920s (not mid century) & mahogany.
I am blessed that mine has the original stain & varnish. Never refinished.
I have to say, the end result of your's is close to what mine looks like except for taking the pulls & knobs. Mine have the dark patina.
You did a lovely job & the piece just glows.
Thank you for sharing your video.
This turned out amazing. And thank you for the visual of 1/4 sawn oak at the end.
Excellent work!
First, the Hinges are Stanley Sweetheart marked, which dates them from
1920-1935. .
Next, the wood is NOT Walnut. It is Cuban Mahogany. Very rare, and
now practically extinct. These types of beautiful Mahogany pieces are
the special targets of the Shabby Chic Bitches and their paintbrushes!
Thank you for saving this piece and restoring it to it's former glory.
Walnut is my favorite wood, I love the dark stain, it turned out amazing. You were watching Forest Gump and I believe I only spotted the little brass goat once in the desk cubbie.
