Making a Tumbler in the Cricut Mug Press: 5 Mistakes to Avoid!

  • We’re just getting started with the Cricut Mug Press, but we’re already floored at how well it sublimates mugs and tumblers. To be honest, we almost didn’t buy the Cricut Mug Press, as we thought it only did heat press on mugs (and we already have too many mugs). But once Sheesh So Crafty showed the world that you can actually sublimate skinny tumblers in the Cricut Mug Press as well (link to her video below!), we decided to buy one and see if we could sublimate skinny tumblers in the Cricut Mug Press. And it works!
    However, we did make quick a few mistakes on our first couple of tumbler presses in the Cricut Mug Press. So in this video, we show you the mistakes we made with the mug press so you don’t make them as well. We also show you one full, good skinny tumbler press in the Cricut Mug Press to show you how to do it the right way.
    We hope this helps you push the possibilities with your new Cricut Mug Press!

    I recently bought a Cricut mug press. After pressing a couple of handled mugs I decided to try a short metal tumbler & found that it worked well in the mug press. I was going to experiment on some small skinny tumblers but wasn’t sure exactly how to approach it. Your video is extremely helpful. You’ve probably saved me considerable time & money! Thanks!

    This is my first time watching y'all and you're great! I really appreciate everyone of your tips and you're the only ones I have seen give some of them. For your bottom circle you could always cut it out of a thin piece of silicone, grill mat or teflon sheet for a more permanent use. I can't wait to see more of your videos. Thank you for sharing!

      Thanks so much for the kind words! And that’s a great idea to have a more permanent cover for the bottom plate - we didn’t have a thin enough piece to use when we made the video, and your comment reminded us to go buy one. 😄

    I absolutely love your videos! I did everything in your video for the 20 ounce skinny tumblers and my tumblers their colours don’t seem to be vibrant. I am using an Epson 2800 sublimation printer, and hippo sublimation ink. I don’t know what I can be doing wrong? I have watched other videos where people leave the tumbler in for three minutes and 20 seconds and only turn it twice. Any tips on why my tumblers may not look vibrant? Thank you so much!

      Hey! We’re so glad you like our videos! Are you using a high quality print setting? And what kind of paper are you using?
      As for the length of time, we’ve found that this amount of time works well - if you leave it in too long, you can overlook the sublimation, which will affect the color.

    Hi, thank you for this awesome tutorial. I am very new at this a little hesitant. Your tutorial has helped me to understand how to sublimate tumblers. I have one question, with the 20oz tumblers do I have to leave the space at the bottom of the mug press open? Or can I place it all the way down in the mug press? Also when I turn it each time I must adjust the silicone, correct?

    • @JustMightDIY
      @JustMightDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey - we’re glad this tutorial is helpful! When your tumbler is upside down, don’t put it all the way down over the plate at the bottom - that will cause ghosting at the top rim of your tumbler. Make sure that it’s higher than the plate at the bottom of the press. As for the silicone, we keep ours in the same general position and rotate the tumbler instead. Happy subbing!

      @@JustMightDIY Ok. So just to be clear that means when the tumbler is upright I place it all the way down, but when it is upside down I don't put it all the way down over the plate at the bottom? I apologize if this is a silly question. I am so new at this, just trying to understand the process. Thank you in advance for your patience with me.

    • @JustMightDIY
      @JustMightDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! That’s not a silly question, and we’re happy to help! You are absolutely correct on that. When your tumbler is upright, you can sit it on the plate (just be sure to cover the plate with something so it doesn’t scratch the bottom of your tumbler as you turn it). Then when you flip the tumbler upside down, don’t put it all the way down over the plate - you’ll get ghosting on the rim. You’ve got this!

    I used my mug heat press that came with my heat press when making tumblers with infusible ink tumblers. I had to press the top and bottom sections separately and turned occasionally w/in 5 mins each half and the color was even both ends. I did have blotches on a couple and the ink ran some covering up apart of the letter A in the design. Frustrated with seams and ghosting on the very top and bottom.

      This is a bit tricky to answer. We can say that the image itself was printed at 8.2" wide x 9.3" high. We left extra white on the paper on the top and bottom to allow for taping. We trimmed one of the sides flush with the design and left a little extra on the other side to allow for a slight overlap at the seam. Hope this helps!

    • @JustMightDIY
      @JustMightDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Great question - the Epson 2720 can't print large enough to do a full wrap from top to bottom on a 30oz tumbler (at least not the 30oz tumbler we have). To do a full wrap on one of those, you'll likely need to piece together a couple of either 8.5x11or 8.5x14 pieces of paper. When we tried (and failed) to do the full wrap on a 30oz tumbler here, we were using a Cricut Infusible Ink sheet (12x12), but we realized that those can't be sublimated in multiple presses. :)

    • @JustMightDIY

      Hey! Great question. We tried to do a 30 oz tumbler that was 9.5" tall using this method, and there was about a half inch in the middle that didn't get subbed very well. Based on that test, we don't believe it's possible to do a full 360, top to bottom on a tumbler of that height. However, not all 30 oz tumblers are the same, so it's worth double checking the dimensions.
