I dunno if I've shared this before in an r/recruitinghell Emkay video, but here goes: In the country where I live, people with disabilities are given little to no chance to perform a fulfilling job. Part-time jobs (which is physically perfect for me) don't pay well enough to have you live on your own and make ends meet and full-time can be physically too taxing. I have mild cerebral palsy (in short, at least in my case: I walk like a zombie and get tired faster than the average human being) and I have to live off of a governmental allowance, simply because otherwise I'm unable to pay rent, bills,...I can and want to work, I've done internships at an industrial kitchen, cleaning crew, daycare and a nursing home - all of which are mentioned in my resume. The system in my country however makes it so that once a disabled person starts to work, all benefits get taken away because "they can work". This STILL applies after the individual gets fired, has an accident,... because, once again "they can work". Long story short: as a disabled person here you either slave away doing a part-time job that pays poorly or you're stuck at home, living off of an allowance because it's the only way one can pay the bills. There is no in between. Oh and most workplaces aren't accessible for disabled people either and getting hired is chore, because most employers "don't hire someone of that caliber" (as one employer once told me after my application). Thank you for anyone sticking around to read this. I tried to explain it as best as I could 😅
My mom isn't even disabled but she can't get job because the benefits she gets from having custody of me gets taken away I'm 14 so I can't get a job but it's very much like an abusive parent seeing you try to take care of your self and then kicking you out
America, the land of hell for disabled people, man. I deal with those exact same things, because my medications are very expensive. I can work, but in order to get my medication I can’t work an actual job (can’t earn over 3000 a year) or they’ll revoke my Medicare benefits for good . Basically, they force you to be poor. Either you get poor by working part time to get free medication or get poor to pay for the medication itself, even with a relatively good paying job. 😢
I have Cerebral Palsy as well. I'd love to work but can't. I'd give anything for more independence & to get out of the house. To feel like I'm actually doing something to earn money for things. To get out of the house. ANYTHING. Even if I was able to do something, if I'm not careful, I'd loose my benefits & I'd be screwed cause I'd be out of spoons & be in pain for a week after maybe a day or two before being able to function to that degree again. Sucks that the US is so car dependent, but has a lack of public transportation unless you live in some city. I have to rely on family to get out of the house.
Can't wait for the next time I have an interview if I leave this job, if they ask me to explain the gap on my CV, "Oh I was having a really bad time mentally on account of having to bury my mam after she died suddenly. Need more information?"
"when i was 20 years old i worked at an unpaid internship and i learned more then i have at any other job. incidentally what i learned was that unpaid internships suck and shouldnt be legal"
The last job I had was as an aviation machinist. Lasted 2 weeks. Quit cause my boss wanted me to weld together plates coated in a combustible material. Got $2100 out of it though.
I would’ve told them to come down there, sling my arm over their shoulder and hold the welder in my other hand and tell them I just want to make sure I do it right to their specifications
@matthewhalo1799 that's the thing, my boss admitted he didn't know shit about welding, so he was trusting me to do my best. And then when I said I had to do it differently than the process he laid out (cause he designed the piece), he threw a fit.
Job hunting has always seemed so hypocritical to me, because I have to treat these company’s like they’re the highest and mightiest and come in at whatever time they deign to have me, meanwhile they pretty much routinely just ignore me/neglect to inform me that I am no longer being considered for the position a day after I applied
It's just normal power dynamics. People have to work somewhere to eat. In modern world companies don't need to produce anything, only to maintain stock prices. Working is for poor people.
The place I loved working at shut down in April. I've been applying to 100 jobs roughly a week and had 12 interviews 1 job offer finally, and now I get stone walled.
My friend's mom has some mental issues that dont allow her to work certain jobs, so she was searching for a lower thing to pay bills. She applied to be a cashier, she was denied because she was "over qualified" since she got her Uni done ON 2005, ON A FIELD THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE JOB
Man, our shop has "internal posting" which is the same low start off job in the shop. All the better stuff they hire in for instead. I was fortunate to get my foot into the office when I did because the place is basically a dead end place. Wherever you started off at, that will be your job for the rest of your employment
Getting jobs is ez. Just get a phd, extreme debt, apply to hundreds of positions, and get paid absolutely nothing while also having your employer ask you to do more work 👍
I am so glad to work at a place where all my coworkers are paid the same. We all get 14 an hour (entry level) with almost no extra qualifications. Nothing special but it's wonderful for a first job.
If they ask me "explain this gap in your resume"... I had cancer. Over 2 years I successfully became a professional patient. And so far, thanks to doctors, nurses, and other staff, I defeated 2 of them, after starting from Stage 3, literally on the edge of Stage 4. Frick you.
Well, you know, 22 lbs of metastasis pushing on your spinal cord, compressing major arteries and threatening to invade kidneys, pancreas and liver, having to undergo surgery to have half of an organ removed, 4 months of chemotherapy, 4 months of isolation because of 0 white cells count, 4 months of blood transfusions until the bone marrow recovered enough to start producing enough red cells... You know, it's kinda hard working when you spend a year tethered to machines and another year adapting to how your body has changed after the mutiny that almost killed you... My dead end job at a diner is killing me but at least I have a job. If I have to make one more overpriced club sandwich, something ANYBODY should be able to make for a fraction of the cost I'm going to scream.
Yeah, job hunting is hard. Spent all of 2024 unemployed just constantly getting ghosted and rejected from applications I send. I live within walking distance to a mall and commercial center, and no one wants to hire me. Only made worse by the fact that I have to rely on my dad who should be retired by now. Even have help from a Vocal Rehab program with a job coach (they even sent me a check to get a bike), and I'm still struggling.
I was a recruiter once, so I can tell you the back-end :) My contract wasn't renewed a third time, because I wasn't hitting the numbers. I wasn't hitting the numbers, because I was actually talking to people to see how I could help them, find other options they might like and check how we could make that work. I didn't have a lower placement number than the senior colleagues, mind you. I was just not hitting the amount of calls and contacts, my calls lasted too long, interviews lasted too long.

If employers being short on staff is true, then a considerable amount of these can overlap with r/choosingbeggars.
When I went in for the first interview for a job I currently work at I walked into the building and I got the “we are going in another direction with this job” from the first person I met. I left the building confused. Then I got a call to come in for a second interview at the main office. I got the job right after meeting with the HR rep and filling out paper work.
The fact that if I want to apply for an IT job (which is something I've worked on for my school district and have sufficient knowledge of without college) I need a degree in Computer Science and multiple certifications sucks. I am 20. I have applied for and been rejected by: Kroger Cashier (at three different locations), Dairy Queen Worker (at two different locations), Walmart Cashier (at two different locations), Target Cashier (at two different locations), and a CVS Cashier. I applied for all of the above jobs with my GED (High School Diploma), and have not been very keen on going to college to end up slaving away at college debt.
they want to know your personality type? that strikes me as really really evil. like yeah, here are my strengths, and you know what, i'll include everything that makes me uncomfortable and anxious so you can manipulate me too.
As a point, depending on which state you live in, lunch breaks are not legally required. Federal labor laws do not require that employees be given any breaks whatsoever. Not for lunch. So "Are you saying that you were not giving people a lunch break? That's illegal." Is only true in SOME states. The only thing that the Federal DOL (Department of Labor) has to say about breaks is "IF a break is given, it must be at least 20 uninterrupted minutes or it must be a paid break." So bear in mind, not every place follows the same laws as where you are, so making absolute statements is quite likely going to be wrong.
I do volunteer work with a lgbtq+ group. Ive used this as a safety net to weed out my job applications. The only people who replied, did so to move forward with interviews or called to tell me they "cant consider people like me because of the disruptions we cause in work places." (To be fair this has only happened twice, still gave me giggle though)
Interviewer:eh... So tell me about yourself *looking at papers and not interested in anything I'm about to say* Me:So once an alien tried to probe me and I asked if he wanted to be probed to and now we both go to the Renaissance Fare each year.
My mom quit her job on the spot because although she did 10x the tasks required for her position the management still treated her like crap, she ultimately had enough and is now at a place loads better for her and her family
I remember going through a long streak of being rejected from multiple jobs because I need accomodations in the workplace in order to actually work. I'm lucky to have a boss that is extremely understanding and accomodating now, but the recruiting process absolutely sucks. (Yes I'm aware it's illegal for companies to discriminate against disabled applicants in the US, however companies still do it because they know a majority won't have the funds to take them to court over it)
Yooo the usps scam one almost got me too! I was also 19 and I just suddenly had this moment where i wondered why paying THEM money seemed just odd, so i looked it up. Same thing happened towards the end of 2020 when i almost joined Cutco. I got to the phase where i was just waiting for the training that friday before i suddenly decided to look them up again.
Talking about "competitive salary", there is a local business around here that advertises that the pay "starts up to" a certain pay. Meaning that the MAXIMUM pay is only so much per hour. I would not be surprised if their minimum is the minimum wage.
Decades ago when I was young I interviewed for shift runner at in and out burger. They where extremely rude at the interview. The next day I returned and told them to remove my application because I wont work for a company that treats people like that. To this day I have never eaten at a in and out restaurant. Treat people like shit and lose a customer for life.
These videos are really wild to me because I live in Europe and I don't know anyone who's had experiences that come even close. Maybe I just got extremely lucky.
No, it's just there's almost zero protections here in the US, and a large section of the population actively stands in the way of trying to get any, because apparently thinking our lives matter more than corporate profits makes us 'communists' or 'entitled losers'
4:08 I got a fortune cookie that said "This Wednesday, take a leap of faith and watch the magic unfold" and now with watching this video on said Wednesday, I'm really confused about what leap of faith like what the fuck
7:06 was one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever seen. Like, whether I don’t have kids and I need to work there, or I do have kids and I need to work there - it’s two different types of hell either way
RE on time is 15 minutes late: I once went to a doctor's appointment. I showed up 15 minutes before the appointment time. They told me that "because I was late" the doctor wouldn't have time to do a complete job. I pointed out that I wasn't late, I was 15 minutes early. The receptionist said that they expect people to be 30 minutes early. So I said, "If you wanted me to be here at 2:00, why didn't you give me an appointment time of 2:00?" She replied, "We find people are more likely to be on time when we do it this way." Really? If you tell people the appointment time is, say, 2:30 when it's really 2:00, they are more likely to show up at 2:00? That seems ... unlikely. I never went to that doctor again. I've had others tell me, "Your appointment time is 2:00, but you need to be 15 minutes early." Which is still nonsense. Why don't you just say, "Your appointment time is 1:45"? But fine, if they tell me, I can write in my appointment book "1:45".
4:53 I don’t understand what the anecdote is supposed to mean. 19:47 That’s kinda sus because last I checked most of the recruiters in Dallas were of Mexican or Cuban descent 19:59 Sure Jan
i remember looking up why companies won't give people without experience a chance this one person on reddit said they don't want to spend time and money teaching people things they'll take to other companies. i think that says a lot more about that person than the person without experience.
4:54 sometimes Convention staff might bring a fursuit to participate in the con when they're off the clock so it could have been something like that. or if not maybe they're a fursuit maker and someone asked them a question ab it.
These remind me of the story about a guy who interview for a position that required 5 years experience with a certain system, and they weren't happy because he only had 3 years experience with that system, that he created.. the program was only 3 years old, but they wanted 5 years experience...
47:17 they do something like that for the US. It's not live and uses predictions, but as far as I know it's at least accurate enough to decide what field you want to go into. The state I'm in has even more accurate data for just the positions in that state.
I got injured at my last job and they ignored me when i needed paperwork done for worker's comp. I was jumping through hoops to contact them for 5 months and HR finally got on it, they only gave me 10K. Being out of work for 5 month due to a wrist injury cost me a whole lot more than that.
Got hired for a job, and on my first day, found out the manager had decided he actually didn’t want to hire me. Didn’t tell me until the end of my shift. Never got paid.
Btw entry level doesnt always mean its a beginning of a career, thats just the entry position to that company. A job at nasa as entry level would be a high bar for ezakple.
Well they should choose a new term then, given literally everyone interprets "entry level" as "entering into the workforce". Because, you know, that's what that means
@@hmnhntr the raw definition is the lowest level in employment hierarchy, not entry into the workforce. So entry level at a nuclear research lab would require years of experience while entry level to a smaller job like fast food needs little to none.
@@DeltaGLI read your original comment just fine. I'm pointing out that, given most people don't interpret it that way, businesses should probably find a different term that communicates that concept better. Communication is two way. No matter how clear you think you're being, if other people can't understand, you're not communicating well.
I got lucky, so so lucky this previous week. I was about to snap at my current (soon to be former) employer, like having anxiety attacks and nightmares about the place. it was that bad. For the first time in my life, I got a taste of what it is to be a nepo-baby. I used to hang out in my mom's office after ballet when I was a little girl, and the owner used to come chat with me. My mom told him I was losing it at my current job and their receptionist position just opened up. 3 minute phone conversation, and I got hired for better pay. I'll never get a taste of privilege like that again but I'm so flipping grateful for it.
There's no way someone who died for nine minutes would be released from the hospital on the same day. My stepdad's mom died for 15 seconds and spent several days in the hospital despite being alert, eating, walking well, etc. If this guy was dead for nine minutes, they'd do everything short of holding him prisoner since his brain would need to be scanned for damage, among other things
if im ever interviewing someone, and they stop to go look at a rare bird sighting, all im saying is "POINT THE CAMERA OVER, LEMME SEE LEMME SEE!" its not specifically birds but i just like looking at cool animals u dont see often, like a giant moth, or spider with a bigger radius than my hand, oh and the occasional frog or beetle
55:44 I don’t know any of these companies so I don’t get the joke😂 1:01:30 my brain hurts too much to understand what’s going on here. Help. 1:02:50 I don’t understand. That 6 figures. What are you talking about not paying for it? Am I this inept at business affairs? I don’t understand the thing what’s going on here
All of these companies were later shown to be scams iirc. The last one is kind of like you were hiring a maintenance guy and pre-requisite for an interview is him maintaining your equipment. For free. It's a bit hard for me to make an analogy, but they probably needed a consultant but decided not to pay one after seeing how much it would cost.
15:50 Ooooh my God! If a manager pulled that stunt on me, they'd be getting a super saiyan level rationing of unkind words from me. If they weren't there when I went in to start what was supposed to be my first day of work, you'd better believe I'd be marching back in there every day until someone finally conjured the person out for me so they could hear about it, and they'd never hear the end of it! I'd make sure I went back in person to the workplace and not try and contact them over the phone so they couldn't hang up on me, and I could see their beet red, deer in the headlights face when I confronted them. That is just about one of the most unacceptable things I've ever heard of!
I had a supervisor threaten to stab me with a giant chefs knife and he was just transferred to another location after a younger girl filed more complaints against him. Just 1 jackass in a long line of jackasses I had to work for.
most of the employers are like "hey there! welcome!, i am a representative of this company!, and i swear we are friendly, patient, and tolerant!, but you better meet our expectations of someone who will do the most work, out of anyone with the least amount of pay!, you cant? then get the fuck out of my office that i dont really own" all of that wile having a big ol smile
7:20 tbh i could see how this could work, maybe you could put working parents and their kids in a separate wing of the building with better insulation and noise protection, maybe with each cubicle having soundproof walls so other people don't get disrupted and easy access to stuff like changing equipment... but that would require CEOS to be good at understanding basic human needs, which i doubt will happen this century
20:22 bien I’ll be honest I would have believed the story, but I wouldn’t have thought anymore of him 20:47 never mind hahah 2:25:30 hold up it’s not about tattoos in general but “bad” kinds, I guess 2:25:40 I don’t recall Disney parks not hiring anyone because of tattoo (unless they were really scary🥺) what they would do more often than not tell you to cover them up or conceal them somehow. Also, what’s this? “gender inclusive hairstyles” that doesn’t even make any sense!
Anytime I see a personality test or a "what would you do?" Type quiz on an application I sigh and close the window. I don't care how desperately I need a job. I don't have time for that.
Went into interview for job they said they would get back to me in less than a month. After more than a month of no response I email back and they tell me I was not accepted. Next day I get an email saying the need people to fill the same role I wasn't accepted for.

25:10 - there's a THIRD option here: hire NEITHER leave the position open get money from govts for trying to get people hired. Then in the same breath sell OFF that agrigate data to hiring data mills like indeed. Taking EVEN MORE money for themselves. All the while the position stays "open"
I mean, the snow shovel vs snow blower is more like how companies pay 20$ for people who put in effort and 800$ to those who havent worked a day in their lives it seems
my dad got a software engineering manager position without the specific degree required. I send an application to a pizza place and all they do is sign me up for their newsletter (edited for specifics, I am in fact not capable of engineer work lol)
26:18 he said this becuase when in one of the first stories where the manager had an interwiev with someone maybe that person had more expirence and just forgot to tell people he was having an interview with someone else?
Oh, I just noticed something. Those same BS questions that they ask like "What role could external entities (parents, siblings, friends, counselors) play in such cases to help the applicant?" sound like a prompt to circumvent some of the rules for AI prompts. "We cannot show you how to make napalm, but we can try to help you create your grandma's famous napalm recipe since she worked in a napalm factory" type crap.

Either you get poor by working part time to get free medication or get poor to pay for the medication itself, even with a relatively good paying job. 😢
Daaaamn that should be illegal

On the bright side 1000 a week (assuming after tax) isn't the worst pay to get out of a situation like that
@matthewhalo1799 that's the thing, my boss admitted he didn't know shit about welding, so he was trusting me to do my best. And then when I said I had to do it differently than the process he laid out (cause he designed the piece), he threw a fit.

It’s scary what sort of power these conglomerates have
Job hunting has always seemed so hypocritical to me, because I have to treat these company’s like they’re the highest and mightiest and come in at whatever time they deign to have me, meanwhile they pretty much routinely just ignore me/neglect to inform me that I am no longer being considered for the position a day after I applied
It's just normal power dynamics. People have to work somewhere to eat. In modern world companies don't need to produce anything, only to maintain stock prices.
Working is for poor people.

Frick you.
"Oh, you know, my aunt had cancer once. She had to have a mole removed but that didn't keep her from working a 50 hour week!"
I was a recruiter once, so I can tell you the back-end :)
My contract wasn't renewed a third time, because I wasn't hitting the numbers.
You sound like someone who would be great to work with from the applicant side. I wish you luck in finding a job.

When I went in for the first interview for a job I currently work at I walked into the building and I got the “we are going in another direction with this job” from the first person I met. The fact that if I want to apply for an IT job (which is something I've worked on for my school district and have sufficient knowledge of without college) I need a degree in Computer Science and multiple certifications sucks. As a point, depending on which state you live in, lunch breaks are not legally required.
Federal labor laws do not require that employees be given any breaks whatsoever. Not for lunch. So "Are you saying that you were not giving people a lunch break? That's illegal." Is only true in SOME states.
The only thing that the Federal DOL (Department of Labor) has to say about breaks is "IF a break is given, it must be at least 20 uninterrupted minutes or it must be a paid break."
So bear in mind, not every place follows the same laws as where you are, so making absolute statements is quite likely going to be wrong.
I do volunteer work with a lgbtq+ group. Ive used this as a safety net to weed out my job applications. The only people who replied, did so to move forward with interviews or called to tell me they "cant consider people like me because of the disruptions we cause in work places." I remember going through a long streak of being rejected from multiple jobs because I need accomodations in the workplace in order to actually work. I'm lucky to have a boss that is extremely understanding and accomodating now, but the recruiting process absolutely sucks. (Yes I'm aware it's illegal for companies to discriminate against disabled applicants in the US, however companies still do it because they know a majority won't have the funds to take them to court over it)
yep because America's legal system isnt actually about right and wrong. whoever has more money is the winner in every case

Talking about "competitive salary", there is a local business around here that advertises that the pay "starts up to" a certain pay. Meaning that the MAXIMUM pay is only so much per hour.
I would not be surprised if their minimum is the minimum wage.

“If I watch videos about how hard it is to work, I’m not gonna get any work done”
Decades ago when I was young I interviewed for shift runner at in and out burger. They where extremely rude at the interview. The next day I returned and told them to remove my application because I wont work for a company that treats people like that. To this day I have never eaten at a in and out restaurant.

19:47 That’s kinda sus because last I checked most of the recruiters in Dallas were of Mexican or Cuban descent

i remember looking up why companies won't give people without experience a chance
this one person on reddit said they don't want to spend time and money teaching people things they'll take to other companies.
i think that says a lot more about that person than the person without experience.
PERFECT timing.
I was looking at programming jobs and found a listing that wanted 5+ years experience in a language that was only three years old.
I got injured at my last job and they ignored me when i needed paperwork done for worker's comp. I was jumping through hoops to contact them for 5 months and HR finally got on it, they only gave me 10K. Being out of work for 5 month due to a wrist injury cost me a whole lot more than that.
