How to Play Solitaire: Setup, Rules, and Strategies

How to Set Up Solitaire
To set up Solitaire, deal the seven-column tableau. The first column has one card, the second two cards, the third three cards, until you reach seven cards in the seventh column. The last card in each column is face up while all the other cards are facedown.
Place the remaining cards in a stockpile at the top-left corner of the tableau. Leave space next to the stockpile for the waste pile and four foundation piles.
How to Play Solitaire
1. The goal is to sequence cards by suit into their foundation piles starting with an ace and ascending to king. When you expose aces, move them to the foundation pile immediately. Build the foundation piles until you’ve emptied the tableau and stockpile.
2. All face-up cards are playable. You can move one card, or a sequence of cards, on top of another if it is one rank lower and the opposite color.
3. If you expose a facedown card in the tableau, turn it face up.
4. If you get stuck, flip a card from the facedown stockpile and place it face up on the waste pile. You can now use this card in the tableau or place it into a foundation pile.
5. Once you’ve moved all the cards from your stockpile to your waste pile, you can flip the pile over and run through it again as many times as you’d like. Do not shuffle the pile.
6. If you’ve emptied a column in the tableau, you can move a king, or a sequence that begins with a king, into the empty space.
Once all the cards are moved from the tableau and stockpile to the foundation piles, you’ve won!
