This tool-assisted speedrun by Swordless Link (me) aims to beat The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX in as little a time as possible while still collecting all 8 instruments from the dungeons.
It was made on an emulator, using frame-by-frame shooting, savestates, and rerecords to overcome things like reaction time and human error. As such, it is purely a form of entertainment, and is not designed to show skill.
This is the second upload I've done of my run. This one is in HD, because BrandonE from TASVideos was nice enough to encode it for me. Be sure to check out and subscribe to his channel: / brandman211
What separates this run from the glitched run is that no screenwarping or doghouse glitches are done in this run. It was the best way to define a category which would justify this run's existence.
This TAS is the result of 7 months of hard work on the game. My intial goal was to improve the previous run by at most, 2 minutes. I ended up beating it by 9 minutes and 47.25 seconds. I'm very proud of this run, and am more than satisfied with my final time.
There's no way this run would've been possible without help from others, most notably, Tompa, who devoted a lot of time to me and my run to help get it as good as it could be.
This run was made by me. It should not be uploaded without first getting permission from me.
Any anti-TAS comments will be deleted. Seriously, if you're just going to call it "cheating" or something equally ridiculous, don't even bother commenting at all, because I'll just block you. Save us both a bit of time.
The actual publication of the movie can be found here: tasvideos.org/1462M.html
Check out TASVideos.org/ to find out more about tool-assisted speedruns, and to watch the many already-existing awesome TASes.
Note: This is the same run I already have uploaded. The only difference is the encode is much better. Look at the ending credits to see what I'm talking about. - เกม
I always thought the Moblins looked like Blastoise when I was a kid.
Pokemon beginings :)
It is blastoise, Nintendo has put blastoise in ever game since 1987

This is UTTERLY incredible, but I can't help thinking through the entire run, the little thing that kept bugging me, "I swear, he can save those 2.69 seconds to make this run less than an hour. I just know it."
The runner said that used save states in this TAS speedrun, so he could get some seconds trying to kill the final boss with the boomerang (sometimes it is possible to kill the final boss with 1 shot of the boomerang)
@@fernandojose2599 it would take a lot of time to get the boomerang
I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work and that this was beautiful. It gave me flashbacks. Hours of blood, sweat, tears and pure joy. This game means more than I can explain, it's something I felt. Your video does it justice. It was satisfying on so many levels. Great job. 💯
awesome work swordless link. I'm so in love with that game since i was a kid. Watching your video just brougt back so much memories... Thank you!
I watched this over a year ago and I'm back to watch it again. Great job! Love the TAS stuff.
45:00 “The Wind Fish is getting restless”
Uh, how could the Wind Fish be restless if it is asleep???
Lol
This Tas was enjoyable all the way. I really liked it and even laughed at some part because what was happening was so out of human skills.
exactly hahahaha
I cant help but admire the amount of dedication these videos take. All your videos are just awesome!
Some of the stuff later in the video was awesome.
You, sir, are a god amongst men.
I have honestly no idea what the fuck happens half the time in your TAS runs but they are so awesome to watch!
Huh... For some reason I thought you'd beat the game swordless :P
now i wonder if swordless is possible
dope tas bra
i love how the ninja microing intensifies as you get more means of moving from one place to another XD
Link's left side got glitched off, guess he's alright now.
... This is a pun.
At 23:30 he's just gone.
This pun is even better if you know that "Links" is the german word for "left".
***** Haha, I wish I had intended to do so. xP
***** Now the sad part is that I'm learning German. I should have realized/remembered that. >.
OMG your gaming Style is so awesome. Very nice moves!!!
I decided to watch this after it was mentioned on TSSB, and I'm glad I did. Very entertaining TAS.
Been looking forward to this for a long time :)
I dont care if this is on an emulator, its still fucking awesome, and I love this game. keep up the good work
I like how this can be watched in 1080p, So you can be absolutely positive you see each pixel in astounding detail.
Awesome! You play the game like a boss lol. This is my first Zelda game and I should say it's one of the best on its time.
stunning work mate :)
Yes! Thanks for including this one!
Every three minutes I think, "What in the hell?" This run is mind boggling.
Awesome And Congratulations Swordless Link
Epic sequence breaking after getting into Angler's Tunnel.
this is perfection
No matter how many times I see that ending, ever since I was a kid. It hurts every single time.
Link's awakening in just an hour... you are my hero !
It's my favourite Zelda game, so thank you !
The bomb jump at 17:13 made me laugh with joy!
Lol You know you're watching a speedrun when the dying animation is longer than the actual boss battle. XD
Thanks for giving me something to do for the next hour
the sound of this game always used to be stuck in my head when i was like 13-14 years old, was weird i even had dreams of the sound
There is no teleporting. Many of the glitches used in this TAS are done by holding up+down/left+right at the same time in various combinations. And this often causes glitchy sprites.
Nice work dude. You can always tell when you've put a lot of work in these runs. Congratz on almost 1 hour. Keep it up! One thing though. Now this is done are we going to b seeing moar zelda non TAS or what?
I can't wait to see the switch version run
Two Link's Awakening in one day? You're too kind
I was helping Swordless during the whole project of this run, as well as doing larger parts myself. I have also had in mind of doing a 100% run of the DX version eventually, something I have also made a rough route for.
Though because of other projects and lack of motivation for this one, I have yet not done a run. We'll see in the future however =).
I got a special thanks in his comments (I'm Tompa) at least :). But yeah, I planned the whole route pretty much. Swordless did most of the run afterall, he just had some help throughout the whole thing.
Making a TAS is indeed very time consuming. I highly enjoy it however, it's a nice little hobby.
WOW that's amazing work SL. I have never seen such a classic being brutalised as much as you just did here.
What's next on your list?
link has broken the matrix
@pichu55 He's TASing the rooms before Ganondorf as we speak. The run will probably take a few days before it is uploaded however, due to the time it takes to encode it. But I guarantee that it is worth the wait =).
Well done sir.
Thanks for the explanation!
Best memories ever
The method used in the TAS was done by holding up+down+shield at the same time to boost you across.
There are two methods to do this without up+down. Either stand as close to the upper hole as possible (Pixel perfection) and just walk straight down. This only works 1/8 of the times though.
Another method is to walk down from the right tree by clipping into wall a little. Once you reach the end of the tree you press downright slightly. Both these methods are very hard to pull off, so good luck =)
... I read the title and legit thought the category was "swordless Link." As in you beat the game without ever getting/using the sword lmao
Holy crap- and I thought I was good at this game. Lol.
Well done.
If you hold up+down at the same time you use the shield, you'll boost off enemies that are in a vertical line above or below you. This way you can boost yourself over the hole.
This is one of many glitches involved holding the directional buttons in different combinations.
If you follow the second to last link in the description, go to "Submission #2565" and you can find explanations about it.
@TheKDX7 We finished the run two days ago. It will be up on Swordless' channel either tonight or tomorrow. Stay tuned ;).
Amazing.
Stunning quality and great run. :-)
this may not showcase "skill," but it sure as hell shows an incredible amount of effort on your part.
26:39 Hipster Link : making dreams within a dream before it was cool. XD
3:10 thoses moves :D epic!
I'm a TAS fan. I know all about that one. What I'm wanting is a TAS that shows off the features of the DX version. A 110% run, if you will. In my opinion, the DX game isn't finished without running the Color Dungeon and getting all the photos.
And I know that SwordlessLink likes this game and is very knowledgeable about how to TAS it. So I'm hoping he'll attempt it someday.
@Tomtelala I think there could be a possibility to go through the flowers in the swamp, but for the Castle like for the Walrus, it looks impossible :/
And yeah, skipping the flying chicken part was really impressive, it's a great job u two did!
And i'm pretty sure there still some minor glitches to find :)
I´ve just been watching Link spasming through the entirety of Koholint Island in under one hour, him passing over riddles with utmost apathy and ridiculing attitude , moonwalking by random strangers and creatures while simultaneously punching them in the face with his shield and being a smug asshole in general.
And boy, was it worth it.
@MaskedKirby My original HD encode didn't use TASBlend, which resulted in a messed up credits. This one uses it.
You can only do that when you walk downwards.
The reason why it worked at 2:18 was because the shield (By holding up+down at the same time) gave you a boost off of the enemy.
great run! does this mean that you'll be resuming work on the all temples run of OoT?
This comes from someone who has played both games, but four swords would like to be like this game when it growns up. And four swords was awesome.
At 2:18 he used a glitch to hold up+down the same time as you use the shield. This way Link will use his shield to push all enemies in a vertical angle.
You can also cross the hole with a damage boost from the moblin's arrow.
Bringing up the S&Q menu when you open chests, for example, will skip the text message.
walking on water? I SWIM ON THE LAND!
>be a boss swimming in lava
>get obliterated by fireballs
This generation of Link must've been a demi-god or something, considering all the weird shit he does through this. Swimming in land, or even indoors wehre there's no water. Splitting in half and just walking it off. Walking on thin air over pits.
Link is OP plz nerf.
LMAO
OMFG!, so cool! ;)
very nice
how can we jump through the holes???
Witch buttons?
@stootab This is not a new run; it's a new encode of it which uses TASBlend so that the credits aren't messed up.
What a SWAGGER!
The island and girl was all a dream, but the girl however where she told him that she wanted to be a seagull, she well became one.
this was my only venture into the Zelda series. this was challenging on the GameBoy and fun. never played any other Zelda games. kinda like to get back into it again.
Just try A Link to the past. Buy a SNES, an emulator or buy it form the WiiU e-shop. But play A Link to the past
Yes, they are. However, a lot of these glitches involve pressing left+right+up+down in different combinations. While this isn't normally possible, with a bad D-pad you are able to do it. You can also use the keyboard on an emulator to easily press the buttons wanted.
Again, not all glitches require this type of input. If you want me to explain a specific glitch, or multiple, I'll gladly do so =).
Thanks !
Amazing
I love your TAS videos and could never make one as good, is there a reason why you don't/can't do the normal "pit walk" in level 1 at 05:27
there's RTA, which is cool and showcases skill. then there's TAS which showcases entertainment. And then there's SwordlessLink.
lol the owl "Hoot, young lad....I mean THEIF!" XD
My childhood memories almost looks like "A link to the past"
LOVE
thats one gawdy wind fish
Great video! What's going on when Link gets cut in half or spazzes around the screen while spin attacking? And how was he killing enemies while slicing at completely different parts of the screen?
"Guess what, you got it for free. Are you proud of yourself?"
I don't know if you have done it or not, but how about an oracle of ages/seasons run? I love your videos btw.
12:06 hurt link so bad that the boos tore him in half
might I ask HOW the sword was teleported to you in the beginning?
I believe that he used the knockback from an enemy injury to sort of teleport him forward and collect it.
What are the "Return to Game" screens used for? I understand the "Save & Quit" are used to return faster to a previous place, but I don't understand the purpose of the "Return to Game" screens.
I was just pulling my old headboard out of storage and it had a whole bunch of pictures from my gameboy camera stuck to it and some of them were from this game. It was so hard to throw it away :(
Started SRing my Pokemon Sapphire cartridge at the start of the video, got a shiny Mudkip 20 minutes in. SLs videos are imbued with a mystic power.
i'll try. if it's really as weird as you say, i'll enjoy it.
thanks.
I had to do all that to wake up from a dream once.
i love ur vids
Serves the shopkeeper right for charging 980 rupees for a bow.
@hadri1a1 The other two sequence breaks I have been trying is to get into Bottle Grotto without Bow-Wow and reaching Kanalet Castle without trading the bananas. I don't think any of those three will ever be found...
I'm still happy that I found so much stuff for this run. Frog song skip being the one I'm most satisfied with. Though I would love to find more glitches in the game!
32:34 Best Part by far.
Hey thanks for replying.
I was wondering how you glitched past these holes, just before the first dungeon, I would really like to be able to do that. :D
Thanks.
daamn so pro :D
How come sometimes it looks like you're equipped with the L-2 shield, when it displays the L-1 button icon? I noticed it in the Tail Cave. Is it a TAS trick?
