    Be conservative and not break the bank or pay significantly more for a bit of a quality jump. That is the debate we bring you. Cheap coil-overs or an expensive spacer lift kit.

    if you have a newer truck and the shocks are fine go and spend $100 on a spacer then once its time for new shocks or you buy a truck that needs new shocks just go and spend the money on coilovers

    Save your money and wait to buy a quality lift kit. It will save you in the long run and maintain your factory geometry. Also, running bigger wheels and tires puts more stress on the ifs. The necks of your front shocks are small and not as beefy as good coilover shocks which can handle the heavier wheel and tire setups. Save for BDS coilovers, ready lift bilsteins or icon coilovers or bulletproof suspension which uses icon coilovers.

    I wonder when or if any more companies are going to look into foam cell technology like Ironman 4x4 has. There systems are less expensive than coilovers and blow both performance and ride quality out of the water comparing directly to a remote reservoir system. My shop has installed a couple hundred of their kits so far and our customers love them. We used to focus on either spacer kits or Icon/ King systems but when we can get an Iroman foam cell pro kit installed for only 300-500 more than a spacer kit and it rides nicer than a comparable coilover kit why bother.

    I've been super confused lately with in coil spacers vs top hat spacers recently and was curious if you know if they both extend your strut or is it just top hat spacers that extend's your struts down travel?

    • @thwrkmns70
      @thwrkmns70 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A top hat lengthens the overall length of the strut by adding inches to the top." It won't change the pre-load or ride quality. Coil spacers add preload to the spring as they're installed between the spring and top of the strut - forcing the truck up and creating a stiffer ride on the same spring. Coilovers replace the entire strut/spring combo with a longer strut/spring combo (think strut and tophat as one piece).

  • @gusman4846
    @gusman4846 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As an owner of a small 4x4 shop I offer 3 options for a lift kit. Either spacer, spacer with preload, or coilover. I can install either one or two for the customer to test out for an extra fee. It's more often that a preload with spacer will be chosen to control the extra weight of the wheel and tire package if purchased at the same time. If only the lift will be purchased, it's just the spacer. Just a thought.

    Another thing to consider: Does your truck need new struts and shocks. A friend recently bought a 2018 F-150 with 70k on it. He was just gonna go for the spacer leveling kit (Mammoth) but I talked him into the full strut/shock kit, once we got it in and drove it......WOW.....The difference in ride quality was night and day. The factory struts and suspension had been doing an ok job but at 70k they were definitely getting worn out.

  • @carljr.99

    I'm the in-between on this because I know coil-overs are good, but I don't want to pay 3k for coil-overs and then use cheap tires. I think full replacement strut like what Mcgaughy's offers is the best of both worlds because of price and ride. It would leave open more of a budget for decent tires also.

    Do either of the methods affect your travel or ground clearance? I’ve heard that spacer kits don’t actually improve your off-road experience or give you more ground clearance and that they are an appearance vs greater off road capabilities like a complete coil over or strut replacement. Taking the obvious, stiffer ride for aggressive off-roading from a coil over, What else does it do that a spacer doesn’t?

    • @DoubtingThomas333
      @DoubtingThomas333 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spacers give you more down travel and less up travel. A longer shock and spring setup will allow you to maintain up travel (that the vehicle was designed with) and give you more down travel, helping you in off road driving / over landing etc. You want slightly higher spring rates for offroading with more lift than stock, but it is really dependent on your GVM and GCM as to what those numbers should be. You don't really need longer shocks if you aren't lifting more than 2 inches (with a spacer kit). It can be prudent to install longer / taller bump stops with a spacer kit though, just to make sure the shocks don't get over compressed. Peace

    Forgive my ignorance as im still trying to figure out whats best.. but with coilovers shouldn't you still do the diff drop, relocate the sway bar replace the knuckles etc? If so wouldn't you be better served, assuming you're 9n. A fixed budget atm, to get the spacer kit that comes w all that stuff and then Replace the spacer/stock shock combo w something better when you're able or they wear out?

In the future though I'll definitely be looking at some nice coilovers, thanks for the info great vid! 👍🏼

      Custom Offsets I should have included another question for you guys in my comment but it's not related to the struts or spacers haha, you guys are the best though so I figure you'd know, Ive seen a few things around suggesting that if you go over 3" of lift that it's a good idea to do a carrier bearing drop. I've also had people tell me it's a good idea to re-gear when bumping up to a 35" tire, I could deal with the power loss as long as i know it won't damage the vehicle, what would you all say about this? Thanks in advance 👌🏼👍🏼

      Best bet would be something like a level lift, it will keep it very similar to stock on the cheaper side, or if you want to spend a little more getting a nicer setup with control arms, or coils definitely improves ride to stock territory! After watching some videos and doing research, it has been said the bds 6 inch kit rides great without the coil over conversion.
