I've never realised how much the internet makes subarus look impossible to work with until I've seen this video. I always thought the engine (without turbos and all the good stuff) would be over $40k and everything else would be a pain to deal with. This video actually brought my hopes up because building my dream car seems so much more attainable.
They're really not as bad as people make them out to be, most of thr EJs are pretty much Legos. The FAs are a little annoying but super easy platform to work with and alot of misinformation out there 🙏
@@Smeedia Many a farmer in tractor pulls braze alum rods at low heat for mounting areas like you had problems with. The rectified finish of the ots1000 brazing rods are stronger than the cast alloy mounts from factory and wont warp your block at all. Oh well just for future reference.

Delta did my cams as well, sent it to them from here in Nevada... I get giggling when I tell people I have "stock" cams😉 Great video, I wanted to know what all was done.

From what I remember the svx piston cylinder is 96.9 mm and the ej22 being 98mm yet only a 1/8th inch “ difference under what the ej22 piston spec out at in Mm , nothing a little honing boring to that point would fix
The exhaust ports on the heads are completely stock port and sized valves? Just curious what your logic was behind opening up the intake side but not the exhaust side. Thx, good video as always
Torque plates just simulate the heads being there, so when honing they are torqued down, making the cylinders oval equal to what they will be when you put on your heads. If you bore/hone without torque plates the bore would be oval once you torque your heads down :D

What did you do for cams? I contacted Schneider and they are able to do a regrind on the stock cores but I was curious what others have used. My build is similar to yours, custom CP pistons and ARP studs etc, just undecided on the valvetrain at this point.
If I understand the torque plates correctly they're torqued just like the heads in order to give you a true shape for the bore so there's no deformation post honing that would cause any issues. That's how it was explained to me.

We shouldn't as far as I'm concerned, with thr addition of 2 more cylinders it displaces everything out more than it would via a 4 cylinder making the same boost levels

We're suppose to balance them? 😳 I'm kidding lol the pistons get done at the machine shop to get weight equal and I do the rods here to balance everything out. So rods & pistons are balanced during assembly Cranks are all brand new OEM so they aren't widely off
Awesome! I've got a boosted EZ30R in my car, but the motor is still stock aside from head studs. What did the reground cams cost you to do? I'd be interested in doing my exhaust cams, as they're quite small in lift & duration for a turbo setup. Would increase engine safety and maybe aid spool :)

Several years ago I bought a book about the Subaru Impreza and in it there was some history of Subaru, and it included a prototype racing engine they developed many years ago that was a 12-cylinder boxer engine. I think it was for F1. Of course it didn’t go anywhere and as we all know Subaru moved on to rallying.

Ez30 is the path I went with my forester build - Destroys 5speeds so I had to upgrade to a 6 speed. My goals are two k04 turbos low mounted and quick spool up for daily driving :P maybe I follow you and take the ez30 to the 1k hp range .. just not there yet
Im planning on having my mechanic swap in a stock eg33 to my 05 Saab 9-2x aero. I don’t think I’m gonna turbo it just yet but we’ll see what the future holds.
If you wouldn't mind telling me what buckets are there I'd appreciate it. From my understanding and also having an EG33 first hand, the OEM ones are hydraulic but also a different diameter than EJ buckets. I think some have found BMW E30 buckets to work. But anyway, the bucket dilemma is one of the bigger ones when building this motor so it'd be helpful to actually have that information out there since you have first hand experience with it.
They're just OWM EG33 buckets, same style as the EJ but like you said diffrent Dia. The builder has access to alot of OSM Parts to luckily he was able to get the ones needed for the set up. As for the fan and radiator, the rad will be pushed forward to sit where thr AC condenser use to be and thr fans will be push instead of pull so mounted on the front of the rad

I had an RSTi that i wanted to swap, had an EG longblock and also acquired an EZ30R longblock but ended up selling the car. Decided that I'll EJ207 swap my other RSTi and put my sleeved 2.1L motor in my '99 STi. Definitely will be following the build since it's exactly what i wanted to do and never did

Classic Sti short block 4 banger is only around $2-3k for a brand new crate engine from Subaru

Just to be able to get more air into the chamber, it should still evacuate the cylinder without any issue when thr exhaust side opens

Delta cams, they reground mine as well. I used super tech everything on mone + ported and polished on the heads

I'd have to look at the sheet again in the bore, did not want to drop a sleeve. Sleeves would be easier to service though

My sizes would be diffrent than any other engine. Going oi be based off of valve length, cam size etc

When it comes down to buckets you'll still have to measure them out unfortunately. No car would have thr same bucket sizes 😖

They come from thr factory with hydraulic lifters 🙏 when I disassembled mine when it was OEM you can see all the buckets
