Honestly, I'm not sure if anyone else agrees with me, but I am totally interested in seeing you play with making more glass stuff for like ten hours straight. I think this has been my favorite experiment or craft so far from the channel. Really jealous of you all, I want to do that too😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
If you’re ever in Tacoma Washington, the glass museum has workshops that let you make a small plate sized version of these I had fun making one but you don’t get to fire it up yourself they do it for you
I deeply appreciate that tip at the end about not cooking food in that microwave. Good safety advice for anyone here who's experimenting at home. Tools designed for food, should /never/ be used on food once they've been used on craft projects that involve non-food-safe fumes/dust/residue. If you want to be able to do both, have duplicates and keep them separate. If there's ANY chance they might get mixed up, label the craft stuff. 💜
This. I work with polymer clay and rather than use my kitchen oven to bake it, I got a little toaster oven for cheap on Facebook Marketplace. My little toaster oven is used for polymer clay and shrink plastic and crafts like that and never any food. Likewise, polymer clay, shrink plastic, and other crafts don’t go in the kitchen oven.
If you guys ever want some advice or help with your stained-glass projects, I'd be happy to help. I've been working with stained glass for about 30 years now. One thing you definitely want to make sure is that all the glass has the same COE (Coefficient of Expansion) level when you are fusing glass. The packages or the glass will usually be marked with a COE number. If you try to fuse glass with different COE numbers, it will crack eventually. Another thing you might want to try is adding a layer of clear glass to the top, it will add an extra layer of depth and really bring out the contrasts in colors. Another thing to remember about glass fusion is that the glass will almost always wind up two layers thick, so if you use one layer plus a just frit on top, it is probably going to shrink in overall size, but it will be two layers thick. If you use three or more layers, it will expand out to two layers thick and become larger in size in the other dimensions, especially if you are fully fusing the glass. If you want to add texture, you can tack fuse the glass together using a lower temperature in your kiln. If you would like any more advice, please don't hesitate to ask.
@@Nirrrina That's a good idea, I'd be all for that. I actually like teaching a little bit. During a semester of Stained Glass 2, I was pretty much teaching the whole class because our professor was showing his work in art shows and competitions and was gone a lot. I was supposed to complete two stained glass lamps, plus do some fusing projects, so it made it a bit of a challenge to teach them at the same time I was trying to complete my projects.
So, If I understood correctly, if there are two layers it will shrink, but if there are three it will expand? Fascinating! And for my brain with absolutely no knowledge in the matter absolutely confusing. 😄
Glass wants to be 1/4" inch thick while molten so keep that in mind when doing projects. Also be sure to stick to the same COE (coefficient) essentially if the glass you use has the same number such as 96 it will mean that it will all crystalize without issues. Using different COE values can cause cracking as the glass crystals may cool at different rates.
@@EvanAndKatelyn Also- there is a tool for cutting off the corners, so you don't have to file at it for 20 min. But I am unsure what it is called. It is like a tong with two round "cutting" things.
I made some fused glass pendants in a class by sandwiching plant pieces between a colorful and clear glass! The plants would turn to ash in the kiln and they looked pretty cool. Thicker things like pine needles turned out more visible than flower petals or thin leaves. It was pretty fun! ...These glass videos always make me wanna play with glass again 😹
I absolutely love that Evans golden retriever energy is apparently genetic! Like he is so sweet and supportive then his mom joined in and i just wanted to hug them
I’ve taken glass classes like this and we used hairspray instead of the glue. You get your pieces where you want them and then mist them with non aerosol hairspray. It keeps everything in place when transferring to the kiln, it burns off the same, and it’s cheaper. Have fun and I’m in for any future projects!

Just wanna say, your mom has some great energy. It was so nice hearing her talk about her little advertising and how much she loved stuff. She believes you could conquer the world! Almost exactly a year ago I lost my mom. Hearing your mom talk reminded me so strongly of her. Just wanted to share my appreciation and love. It made me feel at home again.
So fun!!! I've worked with cutting glass in a lab and I think you would benefit from some safety equipment! When cutting class you always want to wear gloves, glasses, and most importantly a mask or respirator! You can use a dremel to further refine your shapes.
Sassafras is a tree! That could take a while. Safrole is also supposedly a carcinogen, though I don't think it's really been demonstrated, but that's why it's not in root beer anymore.
I made glass mosaics in my art class last year, and for cutting the glass, you’re supposed to hold the cutter from the top, with your thumb on top and fingers curled around it (basically how Evan did it, not Katelyn), so that it’s easier to put more pressure on it. If I remember correctly, it’s easier to pull than push it. From my experience, you can also get by without making a full cut, if the majority of it is cut straight, then if you crack it, it’ll continue straight rather than veer off to the side most of the time. And I’ve found that you can use the snappy tools for anything down to a bit less than a centimeter, anything smaller than that and it can’t get enough grip on either side. And yes, cutting accurate circles is a pain, I had to do like 30 of them, including several that were like half a centimeter. I’d recommend getting some more tools to cut the angles. I don’t know what they’re called or anything (as they were owned by my art teacher and they were very old and dull), but there are ones that look like scissors but just have two circular blades at the end. It will cut the glass randomly and doesn’t rely on any cutting beforehand like the snappy tool you used, but it is incredibly useful. My mosaic was a dragon eye, and the eye was incredibly detailed and was entirely made up of literal shards of glass that were way too thin and small to be cut by the method you used, but were incredibly easy with the tool I used. It also helps because you can very easily just snap off corners with it. That’s the only way I could do circles, just continually cut off anything too sharp until it’s vaguely circular. I would also recommend doing it in front of a basket or something, the shard can and will fly across the room if you don’t have anything to catch it.
I love this! I hope they do more! I can totally picture a cherry blossom scene with these materials! (Green confetti piece for the grass, brown pole for the trunk, pink frits for the leaves 😍) Or a probably easier one would be a night sky! (Black base with that beautiful reflective frits as stars, they could add a moon or the moon and sun to the middle for more intrigue!!) Katelyn's alien made me think that a mushroom could be possible since the glass would probably round out (mushrooms would be so cute as earrings if they tried it!) Ahh I really hope they try this again! I'm obsessed 🤩
Compared to a microwave kiln (MWK), a "real" kiln takes so many more hours to ramp up, hold, and anneal by slow cooling. It wastes an immense amount of energy (electrical or natural gas), it's really not justifiable as a hobby. It would be like if you baked non-stop for several days at an extremely high temperature.
This looks so fun! I would have never thought about melting glass in a microwave. Also, glad you have a dedicated shop microwave. Would be neat to see more microwaved glass art. (Perhaps a Joobie?)
Whenever you guys upload, I make myself a meal and a big ol' cup of sassafras-y rootbeer to watch. You guys make everything so fun, thanks for the videos!
Well I do have to say the sassafras tree has to be my favorite, It’s just better. Also completely unrelated I love to read hard to read text, has to nothing to anything, you know I just do.
Love this! It definitely seems like the placement of the glass pieces is important, they don't seem to move much once they start microwaving. Could get really complicated with glass beads and stuff maybe? Would love to see you guys try this out again!
You did so well with this! Round pieces are tough. My dad has been doing glass work for years and still struggles with small round pieces. Love seeing y'all try new things!
I feel as if your guys' videos are more valuable for learning than some others made by professionals of their craft. you guys are beginners to each new craft you try and have the courage to share your mistakes, which in turn makes videos that are not just explaining but also showing why some things dont work and what could go wrong in a craft. yet by the end of the video, you have mastered the basics of each craft and shared more in depth and experienced information that professionals might not have thought to include in their tutorials due to multiple reasons such as thinking it wasn't important, or they thought they were the only ones who would encounter those scenarios. thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to make such amazing videos so that people with only the internet and crafting supplies can make their own world with!! and also, thanks for keeping those mistakes so we have a better understanding of each craft if we wish to try it ourselves.
Love this video! I started out with a microwave kiln just to try the fused glass trail out! That resulted in me today having my own small business with a real glasskiln. Giving classes, doing shows, and still 6yrs later learning more and everyday again falling in love with the art of glassfusing!
That's a good, impressed momma reaction right there 😂 Honestly, this seems so versatile and fun. I'm sure with both of your creativity with resin you could make plenty of really nice glass works with a little trial and error! Could even be sellable/giveaway items. 🤷♀️ I bet you could even make little cut out stencils to streamline making a specific design over and over with different colors. Perhaps a rainbow Joob???
As an inspiration: you should make Joobie a cat tower and the resin bowel you guys originally made can be put in aswell so you can see her sitting in there without having to get down to her level on the floor to see her on the bottom of the bowel through the glass 😮
We need a live stream of y’all just playing with glass. Especially since the melting and cooling isn’t /that/ long. Also I love how supportive Evan’s mom is. And just their families in general it’s so wholesome
This video was really fun but, I mean, I wasn't expecting anything less from your channel! the way you try everything, it's really sassafras and satisfying. I've been watching your videos for years now, and you really are an inspiration because there's nothing too difficult to be done and, even if something goes wrong, you learn from your mistakes and get it done anyway. If that's not a great message, I don't know what would! So keep up with the incredible work!!!
I love all your videos!!! I rewatch them when I get bored at work, and they are very funny! Fun fact: did you know that root beer is no longer made with sassafras
PLEASE wear masks and glass cutting gloves! I used to work in framing and have a lot of experience with glass! Those shards from filling the glass can be EXTREMELY dangerous for your hand, eyes and lungs!! Always wear masks, goggles and glass shard protection gloves!
I would love to see you guys do this more often! maybe a bob ross tutorial episode but with tiny charms or something. This made me want to get all the materials and try it myself lol
I’ve literally just clicked the video and I’m SO glad cause I’ve seen this kiln online and have been tempted! For another video, would you try something with clay and see if that works? 😊
So cool! What a fun craft. I like that it's very accessible and relatively cheap to get tools for. Maybe I'll buy a set and make a sassafras leaf myself. Thanks for all the lovely content you two put out. I hope you have a great weekend. :) Evan's mom seems very sweet
You guys should totally try glass slumping! I know absolutely nothing about it except that it uses molds so the shapes and spread are predictable. Mostly i just want to see more glass experiments 😊
Loving these projects! Really like the appearance of stained glass and glass melted into stuff. I've recently gotten into gardening and hope to get a little green house going on my patio. Id love to incorporate some of these projects into some of my DIY stuff I plan for my outdoor gardening, maybe build a little resin window or a bunch of glass tiles for flooring of the greenhouse. Hoping to get into more things I can grow like some bonsai trees, sassafras and maybe some peppercorn plants!
The fact that this even happens when you put glass into a microwave is crazy enough, but it would glow hot red if you put it in long enough is amazing. I didin't think that a microwave had that much power.
I've actually seen this done before by people who have worked with glass before in proper kilns but never by someone trying it out for the first time. It was really fun and I wouldn't mind watching more! 😁👍 Your alien turned out pretty funky and cool, Katelyn! I might have gone for the more standard eye shape but that's personal preference. If you want to do more rounded shapes though, you're definitely going to need a glass grinder for smoothing shapes out. Not sure if there are limits to how high the glass can be in this type of kiln but I think it's also best to put a thin, clear sheet of glass on top of everything to make it look it's best but maybe I'm remembering wrong. 😅 Also, I think Evan just needed two layers of the frit in a bit more of a smooth gradient to get the effect he wanted. Too much of the white underneath showed because there wasn't enough color on top to cover it when it melted so it was more of an abstract sunset at the beach in the end but still pretty cool too. 😉 BTW, I think some clear glass frit would help with filling in spaces so you can keep colors from melting into each other if you top the pieces with clear glass sheets next time. Oh, and I agree that microwaves can be scary, lol. 😅
Evan's design reminded me of the earrings from Demon Slayer. Might be cool seeing you guys try and replicate that in glass. - Also, idea for helping with the base piece color bleedig around the edges: would it be possible to glue fritz pieces around the edge?
“While Japan considers the rising sun flag part of its history, some in Korea, China, the Philippines, and other Asian countries say the flag is associated with Japan's wartime atrocities, and is comparable to the swastika.”
I just wanted to say the day I am leaving this comment, my birthday in in like 2 hours, and I am so grateful for you two always finding a way to bring some sassafras into my life! Keep up the great work!
I don't know if any other people with glass cutting art experience have told you this but here are some recommendations to make cutting the glass easier: 1) To prevent dulling/rusting of the blades you need glass cutting oil (I did not see any in either video but you may have it). Put some on a paper towel at the bottom of a jar and whenever the cutter is not in your hand, leave it blade down. 2) The red cheap ones are great. Buy them in bulk. The "fancy" one is no better. How well they perform depends on use and care 3) Really try to avoid going off the edge when scoring. It is especially difficult with little pieces, but it dulls the blade fast. The pressure doesn't have to be super super hard 4) Try using glass nippers instead of the running pliers for breaking the little pieces 5) You can always cheat on the little pieces by using the grinder. If the piece is very small, wear gloves 6) Use a sharpie to mark off where you want to score. The ink evaporates in the kiln I hope at least some of this helps : )
I have one of these microwave kilns for my miniature pottery pieces. I love it! I literally bought some glass pieces the other day to try this! Once again Evan & Katelyn beat me to it hehe. Love you guys! 💜🏺
This takes me back to the enameling class I took it college. I LOVED IT! Much like Katelyn, I really connect with materials that are able to be manipulated with a high level of precision. I really think Katelyn would love the process of enameling. With a fine powder enamel, you can even stencil with it if you sift it on. Also, hot tip, you can create nice round shapes by grinding glass with a pumice stone and water 😊 to get the shine back, you just heat it up again in the kiln ✨💫
Loved Evan's mum presenting her imaginary sassafras, "notice anything new?". Really sweet. My local art store used to sell those microwave micro kilns for about 100€, which is indeed a lot once you figure out what it is. With them being so much cheaper online, no wonder they disappeared off the shelves.
I loved the color of the first pendant, like sassafras crimson. The alien evolved on it's own! But really cool, wish I could get another microwave just for this! Much love from Costa Rica!
I would just like to say I've been following yall for a long time. I have enjoyed the love and excitement that the two of you have for both you're projects and for joob joob
Ok! This is cool. Maybe if Evan used more yellow/beige/sassafras fritz for the sand, and adding more of them closer to the borders, it could be great! Katelyn's was really good too!
sweet sassafras, i can't believe the glass got that hot in a _microwave!_ if i wasn't afraid of melting glass in the microwave i use for food, i'd already have one of those puppies in my cart
I love your content and energy so, so much! And you always get me in the mood to try some new crafting thing, which is amazing! I'm sassafras about stuff like that, so I really appreciate it! Lots of love from Brazil
Fun Fact: Sassafras is a genus of three extant and one extinct species of deciduous trees in the family Lauraceae, native to eastern North America and eastern Asia.

You did so well with this! Round pieces are tough. My dad has been doing glass work for years and still struggles with small round pieces. Love seeing y'all try new things!
The editing for this video absolutely killed me 😂
Amazing job as always
As someone who pretty recently took a semiprofessional glass class, you guys did really awesome and I would love to see more of this
Love this video! I started out with a microwave kiln just to try the fused glass trail out! That resulted in me today having my own small business with a real glasskiln. Giving classes, doing shows, and still 6yrs later learning more and everyday again falling in love with the art of glassfusing!
This video has been so fun! Almost as fun as going out and cutting down some sassafras to give to the gibbons I work with!
I love the way you guys find new ways to be creative it "sassafras" me every time!
Perhaps a rainbow Joob???
thanks for all the sassafras you two give each other when you make goofy little creatures!
Katelyn’s nails are so cool! (Sorry, distracted) also, the tiny CGI dancing buddy on the crucible at the beginning made me lol
I love how you both protect the privacy of your mom! ❤
“Safety hands”
Also Evan’s mom is hilarious I see where he gets it 😂
Thanks!
Thank you guy's for always making me smile.
Todays a good day, glad to see y'all experiment more and more with non-resin materials.
Katelyn’s hair is styled so beautifully ♡ teach us your ways!!
Couple goals. I hate that phrase but u guys truly are
I’ve literally just clicked the video and I’m SO glad cause I’ve seen this kiln online and have been tempted! For another video, would you try something with clay and see if that works? 😊
Katelyn definitely had fun with the edit this time. Love it!❤
So cool! What a fun craft. I like that it's very accessible and relatively cheap to get tools for. Maybe I'll buy a set and make a sassafras leaf myself. Thanks for all the lovely content you two put out. I hope you have a great weekend. :)
Evan's mom seems very sweet
i think you guys should make a sassafrass themed ring!! that would be so cool and so beautiful
You guys should totally try glass slumping! I know absolutely nothing about it except that it uses molds so the shapes and spread are predictable. Mostly i just want to see more glass experiments 😊
Everytime Evan calls Katelyn 'Baby' my heart melts ngl
they come up with so many cool video ideas and they always make the video funny
Loving these projects! Really like the appearance of stained glass and glass melted into stuff. I've recently gotten into gardening and hope to get a little green house going on my patio. Id love to incorporate some of these projects into some of my DIY stuff I plan for my outdoor gardening, maybe build a little resin window or a bunch of glass tiles for flooring of the greenhouse. Hoping to get into more things I can grow like some bonsai trees, sassafras and maybe some peppercorn plants!
The smell of melting glass
You catch a faint whiff of sassafras
It's done, that was fast
The fact that this even happens when you put glass into a microwave is crazy enough, but it would glow hot red if you put it in long enough is amazing. I didin't think that a microwave had that much power.
I've actually seen this done before by people who have worked with glass before in proper kilns but never by someone trying it out for the first time. It was really fun and I wouldn't mind watching more! 😁👍
Your alien turned out pretty funky and cool, Katelyn! 😅
Also, I think Evan just needed two layers of the frit in a bit more of a smooth gradient to get the effect he wanted. Too much of the white underneath showed because there wasn't enough color on top to cover it when it melted so it was more of an abstract sunset at the beach in the end but still pretty cool too. 😉
BTW, I think some clear glass frit would help with filling in spaces so you can keep colors from melting into each other if you top the pieces with clear glass sheets next time. Oh, and I agree that microwaves can be scary, lol. 😅
The way they spelled smörgåsbord kind of hurt my little Swedish heart, yet is probably one of the funniest things I’ve seen.shmorgishborg 🤣🤣
Love this! Next time you should fill a root beer cap with glass as a pendant...I'm a big sassafras fan
As my great-grandma would say, this video is as good as a sassafras soda on a hot summer day. Always love the content, E&K!!
I guess we’re all just expressing our chaotic selves through Evan and Katelyn then haha 😂
Even and Katelyn you should continue to make more sassafras videos, i love watching them they make me happy seeing them, thank you for the happy 😊
Evan's design reminded me of the earrings from Demon Slayer. Might be cool seeing you guys try and replicate that in glass.

Also, idea for helping with the base piece color bleedig around the edges: would it be possible to glue fritz pieces around the edge?
Would be cute but the rising sun is actually really offensive.. it’s like the confederate flag…
Keep up the great work!
next time you should try to make some leaf shaped glass pieces! maybe sassafras or maple. they have cool leaves.
Your mom is so sweet it literally brought tears to my eyes ❤

I don't know if any other people with glass cutting art experience have told you this but here are some recommendations to make cutting the glass easier:
1) To prevent dulling/rusting of the blades you need glass cutting oil (I did not see any in either video but you may have it). Put some on a paper towel at the bottom of a jar and whenever the cutter is not in your hand, leave it blade down.
2) The red cheap ones are great. Buy them in bulk. The "fancy" one is no better. How well they perform depends on use and care
3) Really try to avoid going off the edge when scoring. It is especially difficult with little pieces, but it dulls the blade fast. The pressure doesn't have to be super super hard
4) Try using glass nippers instead of the running pliers for breaking the little pieces
5) You can always cheat on the little pieces by using the grinder. If the piece is very small, wear gloves
6) Use a sharpie to mark off where you want to score. The ink evaporates in the kiln
I hope at least some of this helps : )
Your mom sounds so adorable Evan. Love her support.

The editing on these videos is so goood. The sound effects always make me laugh.
Love the breathe edge music in the back.
I loved the color of the first pendant, like sassafras crimson.
The alien evolved on it's own! But really cool, wish I could get another microwave just for this!
Much love from Costa Rica!
3:05 Props to the editor for leaving in like two frames of Katelyn's smirk there.
Evan and Katelyn's videos are as pleasant as the scent of a refreshing cool morning breeze that carriest the scent of jasmine and sassafras in it.
It’s giving “is it a good idea to microwave this” vibes, I loved watching that channel as a kid, thank you for unlocking that memory for me
I would just like to say I've been following yall for a long time. I have enjoyed the love and excitement that the two of you have for both you're projects and for joob joob
I think they we both super cool! Very sassafrasy! I hope you guys are having a good day, can't wait for the next project! :3
SO WHOLESOME AT THE END WITH YOUR MOM
An absolute top tier, sassafras of a video! Keep up the great work
Ok! This is cool. Maybe if Evan used more yellow/beige/sassafras fritz for the sand, and adding more of them closer to the borders, it could be great! Katelyn's was really good too!
Such a sweet supportive mother, she reminds me of my mom 😊
sweet sassafras, i can't believe the glass got that hot in a _microwave!_ if i wasn't afraid of melting glass in the microwave i use for food, i'd already have one of those puppies in my cart
I love your content and energy so, so much! And you always get me in the mood to try some new crafting thing, which is amazing! I'm sassafras about stuff like that, so I really appreciate it!
Lots of love from Brazil
Glass is one of the coolest mediums. It comes out looking good almost no matter what you do. Hope you do more glass stuff!
I love them so much- they went from "We painted with resin!!" To, "We melted glass in our microwave." And it's just so funny to me
Fun Fact: Sassafras is a genus of three extant and one extinct species of deciduous trees in the family Lauraceae, native to eastern North America and eastern Asia.
I love the dancing cat spinning around in the beginning of the video!! 😂 0:40
yall are adorable its too much for me
omg “i’ll go around like _notice anything new?!”_ is such a mom response when questioning her about how she’ll be able to promote a product 😂
i adore when your family reacts to your creations in videos, their comments are so charming., your mom sounds like a lonely woman.
