Melting Thrift Store Jewelry Into New Jewelry

  • HELLO FRIENDS!! So, this week we're taking on something a bit different -- jewelry casting! As something of a melting fiend, TH-cam has recommended me a few different videos about metal casting over the past few months -- and I found myself with a big NEED for FLAME. So, we picked up a bunch of jewelry from the thrift store, and then melted it down into molten metal, cast it into organic shapes with water & frozen peas, and then fashioned our castings into wearable jewelry pieces. What do you guys think of my ~collection~?

      in Germany we call a smith who is making jewelry a Goldschmied, a goldsmith. Of course they also work with other metals, but it's rather seldom that they call themselves more specific a gold and silversmith or something. A jeweler or Juwelier is a person who sells jewelry or owns a jewelry shop, but is not a goldsmith. So I didn't know, that people use those terms interchangeably but you are right, those are completely different professions and require different skills and training.

    As a jeweler, this is extremely exciting and I'm glad you found metalsmithing fairy godmothers to help you through the process and make sure you weren't melting down any unsafe mystery alloys. Some notes if you are going to keep making jewelry in the future (which you absolutely should!): it's best not to quench your pieces right in the pickle after soldering/heating. It can expose you to unnecessary fumes. It's best to quench them in some plain old water first. And, the brass brush will give you the best finish if you use it wet, with some dish soap, and you brush forwards in one direction. I hope you had fun!

    I'm a jeweler and metalsmith and I was having a small heart attack for you early in this video. Thank you for checking the karat stamps, thank you for consulting with experts (THANK GLOB THEY TOLD YOU ABOUT POT METAL AND PLATING. The fumes can be dangerous. Honestly a little surprised they didn't acid test any of the pieces, but some jewelers get a really good eye for identifying silver) and especially thank you for highlighting that it wasn't easy! Metal work can be extremely difficult and dangerous, and a lot of the poor/misleading metal casting videos not only risk people's health, but devalue jeweler and metalsmith skills - I've had lot of people balk at a 50 dollar repair price tag because they saw how "easy" it was online ( like many of the arts, not realizing that jewelry work takes thousands of hours of training, sometimes a college degree, as well as 10,000 plus dollars in equipment for the SIMPLE stuff) Anyone can learn these skills, and its so fun and rewarding to make jewelry and metal sculpture. Thank you for doing it right. This was so refreshing. I hope this helps to show anyone who wants to get started how to do it right! (without burning themselves or their house down)

      I agree with how people seem to think art and making of any kind is super easy and we are just ripping them off. Peopl have thought like this, but modern days with tutorials online that are edited just seem to make it worse. They watch an hour of videos and go “that is so easy. I can’t believe they charge so much”. They do not realize the mass amount of time that goes into these works. Also the videos that state “i made this for only $10” i dont believe help either. Cause , yes, they may have spent minimal on supplies for that challenge, but they do not account cost of time, material and equipment that they already own. Plus for most people, only spending $10 is not normal. So most people watching thinking that is how much everything cost and makers just sell at outrageous prices. And then they harass people online selling for normal prices thinking they are making a huge profit. It is such a catch 22 because i think it is very helpful to have these tutorials online and have people learning this stuff, but it also hurts makers because normal consumers do not understand the work and skill that goes into it. And they think it is so easy and cost the makers almost nothing to make.

      I was going to add these points. So many pieces of metal are stamped 925 but are not.

      metalsmith myself and I was literally thinking the same things as you going into this vid haha

    • @Lisa_Flowers
      @Lisa_Flowers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nikkafrog this is a very valid point, and maybe the people who make these tutorials should have a disclaimer at the beginning that says that metal casting is absolutely not easy or generally cheap, and that being able to make thing for super cheap is already coming from the perspective of someone who has invested in necessary tools and years of experience, which cost significantly more than 10 dollars. That said, it's kinda impossible to have this at the beginning of every or even most videos as it would be repetitive to most frequent viewers. And you couldn't guarantee that some random person happen to watch the three videos where you didn't say that and now think it's easy and cheap.
      I honestly think the biggest issue is people lacking some amount of common sense - like it stands to reason that if someone is a professional at something, or has taken years to become proficient at it, it is a difficult skill. Especially when that skill involves blowtorch and pouring literal hot metal. Unfortunately most people just don't seem to consider this, or think that watching an hour of videos makes them adequately knowledgeable about any one thing when it obviously never could. That isn't really the creators fault, it's just a weird thing people do because we live in a world where we have so much access to info and so much of it is being thrown at us all of the time. Spending more than30 minutes on any one topic can make us feel like we have a proficient understanding of it.
      There also seems to be an inherent bias towards the arts in general like you said, maybe because it is tactile and so it's hard to get a good idea of what it is actually like doing that thing through a screen. And that disconnect, combined with professionals making it looks easy because they've been doing it for years, makes it comes across as easy to people. Whereas with like math and science which people generally accept is difficult, you can engage with it through a screen because it's more intellectual, so people try and fail and know it's hard to do. Many people have also never attempted making or tactile crafts like metal working so they have even less experience with it and less ability to know the nuances of why its difficult.

    As a young goldsmith I must say, well done! I remember doing these things for the first time. Especially the soldering is hard. It’s all pretty complicated and dangerous stuff. I’ve burnt my fingers on hot metal before. The burn was white. Do not ever try at home, people.

    • @coconutcore
      @coconutcore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Also, just to get this out there: if you see fun videos about smelting any other kind of metal in any way: don’t get ideas. Alluminium’s poison, brass explodes, tin does weird stuff, gallium…gallium…
      Okay, you can try gallium. Wash your hands because it’s slightly bad for your skin or something and have fun.
      I know I shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t play with hot metal. The internet doesn’t say this enough.

    • @eugenemetayhas
      @eugenemetayhas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is it typical for metalsmiths to not wear heat resistant gloves for protection when working as shown in this video? As a chemist, I am cringing at the lack of heat resistant gloves and appropriate gloves for the acid bath.

    • @coconutcore
      @coconutcore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@eugenemetayhas yes, this is typical. The acid bath is diluted, so you should be fine with washing your hands if it comes in contact with the skin. Some older versions of the acid we use can decolour your clothes though. It may sound dumb to a chemist, but you really really can’t pause every step of the way to put on safety gear when making something artistic. We have tools to avoid touching it all.
      Heat resistant gloves are sometimes used, but it’s rare and only when smelting and casting, but again, if your hands come near the dangerous stuff there, you’re doing it wrong.
      The situation I burnt myself in was when I cast something very solid and didn’t cool it down any longer than I would something smaller. Second degree burns on two fingers. However, if I had put on gloves, they would have been off already, because I couldn’t even heve picked up the piece of metal with them on.
      Soldering though…that stuff’s a whole different can of beans. Your hands and face are always up close and personal with fire and hot stuff, but doing fine work like that would be impeded by nylon gloves, let alone heat-resistant ones. It’s not an option. I have to admit that, here again I’m an example of stupidity. I got frustrated and stressed from a regular, run of the mill attempt at saving a day of work, and because I stopped paying attention, I soldered something and tried to pick it up…without tongs.
      Then there’s the many cuts one needs to get to learn not to put your fingers IN FRONT of the saw, even when there’s no other convenient place to hold the thing you’re sawing. It doesn’t cut all that deep, but it can get deep enough to bleed and gets metal sawdust in the wound (which sounds worse than it is).
      As I did say, it’s dangerous stuff, but it’s no science lab, it’s a workshop where you’re making very small stuff. You have to feel everything you can, because your eyes aren’t enough. Routine is also a creativity killer, so you need to keep it…exciting I suppose. So no, limited safety procedure usually, just a slowly trained amount of common sense.

    i got my degree in metalsmithing so this was so cool to see and really takes me back. you caught on way quicker than i did! silver solder melts at almost the same point as silver does, so for the longest time it would take me so long to solder because i was TERRIFIED of melting my piece. as soon as it started going red i would pull off and fail. a really great teacher helped me get over that. i'm glad you had the right teachers too! all your pieces turned out so cool and organic and wonderfully tactile. the large water drop pieces remind me of oysters

As someone who is just finishing their 3.5 year apprenticeship as a goldsmith it makes me really sad when people promote high end jewellery that isn't made by small buisnesses but rather large companies that produce somewhere else, most of the time not in safe environments. Influencers usually don't show how cool, adventurous and traditional making jewellery is. They only show the finished product and goldsmiths don't benefit from it at all. It is honestly a dying profession. So thank you for giving that spotlight and hopefully inspiring people!

      I mean... back when I was in school we absolutely did use ppe, I still have a respirator from those days. I'm guessing that they figured since they were only going to melt sterling, a regular surgical mask would be good enough to block the fumes from flux. that said... dropping still hot metal straight into a pickle (acid bath) made me cringe a little. it was a HUGE no-no at my school in part because of the fumes and in part because of potential acid splashes. we were always taught to quench in water bath first and then drop cooled piece into a hot pickle (and it needs to be hot in order to clean your pieces efficiently, cold WILL eventually do it, but it will take forever) and I mean... ok I have seen people go straight for the pickle anyways, but I'd also seen people use electric rolling mills or flexshafts (calling it a dremmel in a vid was a bit funny, but then again, people call any and all tissues - kleenex) without putting all of their hair away.... people can be pretty reckless... I just never forgot our silversmithing teacher being super strict about use of PPE because she was partly blind in one eye because she decided not to wear protective glasses while filing one day early in her career...
      god, all this going down the memory lane and watching Safiya have so much fun is making me want to make jewelry again...

    Fun fact: in Finland, it's a new years tradition to melt down some tin, cast it in water and "predict" the following year's fortune from the shape the tin takes in the water. Some say that you're also supposed to look at the shadow that the tin also takes. The shapes at 16:02 look like a flower to me, which means happiness and family celebrations! The flat shape also means that you are going to be lazy and the leaflike shape means receiving news or messages.

      It's so cool ! I'm fascinated by the different ways of predicting the future. Besides cartomancy or tea leaves or palm reading, there are so much interesting versions in every country !

      In Poland people use candle wax for it! Easier to melt XD
      They also pour it into the water through the "eye" the old keys sometimes have. To add more power to the prophecy.

    Honestly, if I just saw those pieces randomly in a store, I would think they are kinda ugly, but after seeing how they are made, they all have a special beauty to them. I like the ring the most. Third time watching this video. Very enlightening, educational, intriguing, and entertaining. I could watch you melt things together all day. You always end up with some great and better than expected products.

    In Finland we have a tradition to pour melted tin in a water bucket for new years eve. There's more to it but I have to go. Look it up.

    I think that “candlestick holder” is actually an egg cup for eating eggs. That’s why the top comes off for cleaning.

      It's definitely not an egg cup: it's a single candlestick holder. The top part was to hold a glass sconce to protect the candle from drafts so it would burn evenly and smokeless. How do I know? I have two of the same which were my mother's.

    We've gone from candles to boba to melting metal! I love the progression of this TH-cam channel.
