      They did a DIY 'stained glass' using resin in 2019 and it worked pretty good. (BUY vs DIY - Recreating Stained Glass with RESIN? on October 25th 2019, I'm not sure if I can link to it here.) They test it in sunlight at the end and (spoiler alert) it lets a lot of light through and performs about as well as the shop-bought stained glass kit, so definitely a good idea.

    • @its_clean
      @its_clean ปีที่แล้ว +57

      That occurred to me too but I suspect that without a super expensive industrial rapid prototyper, their normal consumer 3D printer wouldn't be able to produce fine enough lines to preserve the detail and sharp corners of the design. Does that make sense or am I underestimating the capabilities of current 3D printing tech?

    • @justlettheraincome
      @justlettheraincome ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I think the detail of a 3D printer should be fine. The question is rather if the design would fit on the printing bed. It's really big. And maybe time is a factor, but considering how long it took them to take all the small pieces out it should still be faster

    As someone who does this semi-professionally (i make faux enamel pins with 3d printed frames & resin), here‘s some tips!
    - 3d print the walls - you can even do it in parts for bigger designs, & include the "floor" in the model, no leaks!
    - Use pipettes, not siringes, for finer detail as they‘re more accurate and will cause less dripping & air bubbles. For even FINER detail (some of our pins feature small text), drop bottles can be bought in bulk, have very fine needles & will have nearly no big air bubbles
    - For very small details esp when there‘s neighbouring voids of the same colour, you can include holes and / or tunnels for the resin to flow thru to fill them equally - we do this for all text generally!
    - The curing of some colours before others to avoid contamination like you did is a v good idea! Should some liquid resin spill onto the cured resin, acetone will get rid of it. Just make sure not to let too much of it sit bc it will also eventually eat into the cured resin 😅

  • @Leena79

    This is super cool! For the next one, to make the separating of the cutouts easier, add extra cutlines in the most difficult areas, so instead of removing an entire wavy and complex shape at one, you remove parts of it. I do this when cutting complicated, thin designs from vinyl, and it helps a lot.
    And, for the next one, make it with translucent resin dyes and add a light behind it. I bet it would look amazing, kinda like a neon sign. ❤

    • @DasRainchen
      @DasRainchen ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was thinking why they did not do that. seemed pretty logical to me, that it would make removal of the pieces much easier

  • @PearlJam2k6
    @PearlJam2k6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    When you guys inevitably do it again, consider two things: "resining" it onto a piece of *clear* acrylic so you can hang it up near a window (like stained glass) and cut out the "stencil" section on black acrylic so you have the lineart lines separating each color so its easier to see when you pour. Final result is awesome and super clean, its great you finally get a break and have a project work out well from the start !

Her name is Stella, and even though you've never met or heard of her before, I am reminded of her and my love for her in every one of your videos I watch. If they still have the pieces that got cut out, I'd love to see them make another art piece with those! For example, painting the backs of them and sticking them all to a sheet of acrylic or wood. I think the clear acrylic would make the paint on the back of the pieces shine through and it would be fun to have it resemble those "animal mosaic" art pieces.

    • @larksie
      @larksie ปีที่แล้ว

      Yesss! I was thinking the whole time, "Wow, it would be much easier if they just added a bunch of laser-cut lines through the cut-out pieces so they didn't have to take those out in one big piece, but I guess this way they can use the cut-out pieces for something else!"... and then they didn't haha - it would have ben too much for one video but I'd love to see a follow-up (or on the second channel?) where they do something with them.
      Using them for an illuminated outline is a brilliant idea! I'd maybe paint the pieces black for higher contrast? But then they could totally do some of their LEDs behind it - maybe even colour changing ones? Eeee I wanna see it.

    I absolutely fell in love with the design and immediately ordered it, and I left a little note in the order but I wanted to expand upon it here.
    I'm chronically ill and sometimes it leaves me in bed for a day or two, or I'm so exhausted from health issues that I can barely function, but your videos always make me genuinely laugh. I love it all, from your (chaotic) playful energy, the jokes, how much fun you guys have on your projects, and how much you two hype each other up and support one another.
    Please, no matter what happens in life, make sure to stay silly

    This reminds me of the stained glass painting kits. Not the peel and stick kind, but the ones that came with the design made as hard, clear plastic and you would fill it in with see-through paint and then hang it by a window. Those kits might actually work for resin too, come to think of it. In any case, beautiful work Katelyn and Evan! I love Lisa Frank style designs!

      Exactly! I don't understand why they called it paint-by-numbers, it's just like those plastic designs.

    There are a couple companies that make watercolor paint by number kits for kids that are just like this with the raised outlines. They're usually ornaments, but sometimes you can find them in rectangular prints too. Lisa Frank actually used to have several back in the day. I seem to recall they had one with colored sand too, but I may have just used my colored sand in one of the watercolor ones. I loved doing Lisa Frank art projects.

    I did this with the sun catchers from hobby craft (uk). They're clear acrylic with raised black borders and come with clear thick paints for them (just coloured glue) so instead I used resin and it was so much fun!

    Beautiful work. I had a similar idea to 3D print a frame/design for a stained glass window, where the 3D print essentially acted as the lead, and the glass would be poured resin. And then you did your stained glass resin projects with wood, so that was really helpful to learn I should do a super thin clear layer first.

    When you guys were removing the acrylic pieces from the outline it reminded me of these wood puzzles/building kits that I've done where you have to carefully punch out each piece from sheets of thin plywood and in those they suggest you use an exacto knife to cut the small bits that hold the laser cut pieces together so maybe that'd work good for this too
