For those of you wondering about the "Extra Button" - SAAB basically wired the car with an extra wire - and you could connect whatever after-market thing you wanted. Hence the "Extra" button.
In 1978 my father was hired by SAAB-Scania here in the USA aa s district manager ... and he brought home this funny looking little car ... (4) headlights ... curved windshield ... a hood that opened at the back and tilted forward ... and ... a little "badge" three places on the car ... "Turbo"!!!! ... and I got to drive it!!!! ... 1st gear not too fast ... but shift into 2nd and ... ZOOM!!! ... that car surprised a lot of people as I blew by them !!!! I still have a 91' 900 Conv Turbo ... sitting in my garage today.
I traded in my poor 1999 Saab 9-3 to buy a ford focus because I was stupid. For $500! I would have kept it had I a place to put it. I wish I had it back, I had so much fun driving that car.
He basically does what an intercooler does on a normal turbo, it cools the cylinder down so that ignition spark can be stronger colder air equals more dense air equals a stronger spark
... I just noticed ... @ 2:30 ... there is a shot across the interior of the dash/car ... see that lil' gauge mounted on top of the instrument cluster ... that was the "Fun" gauge ... that is the TURBO BOOST gauge!!! ... and when that lil' needle rotated around to the orange-red area/section ... Boost On ... ZOOM!!!
This is really a joke . There is one thing that SAAB cars had some things that most aircraft has even to this day . That is a Semi-monocot body . There was also the the brakes . It was the one of the first cars that had use of an aircraft wind tunnel and the arrow dynamics of an aircraft . So there is a lot of things that the SAAB cars do share with the aircraft . The arrow dynamics has a lot to do with the amount of HP needed and the weight of the car . For instance arrow dynamics will let the car sustain a higher speed at less hp . The less weight of the car also contribute to less hp going up hill . If both contribute to the cause of efficacy then the car dont need 100 hp to achieve the same thing as a 25 hp can do . This is why these cars was real economy cars . These cars got 40 + MPG with a 2 stroke engine and when they put in the V4 1.7 ford engines in them then the fuel economy ether stayed the same with more power and more power means faster times or speed . This is why these cars was in all the road rallies and races .
OK, but I would argue that most of today’s cars are overpowered, most of today’s drivers lack the skills to handle a powerful car, or have not taken a defensive or performance driving class to get the most out of their cars
Hell no, I like it when they have that little bit of fanciness. If Toyota gets them the convertible will be gone and non of their crazy concepts will make it to production
SAAB hasn’t existed since 2011, the Saab parts department split off from the main company and they are still a viable business, but bringing SAAB back is a fantasy, it will never happen
@ARIES6181 I don't know anyone who owned a 99. They didn't make that many relatively speaking. Regardless, the point is that the marketing of the word "turbo" in the 80s came from F1 and Rallying, not from Saab's 99 or any other road going vehicle.
@@leoa4cI'm sure F1 and the rally circuit didn't hurt any, but discounting the Swedes contribution (both Saab and Volvo) to turbo engine development is quite disingenuous. Saab isn't famous for the 99 and 900 Turbo's for nothing.

That is something only an engineer could come up with
Genius.
Any examples of what one might have used it for?
@@flmcmil aftermarket speaker system?
Extra rally lights?
@@rubberwoody true true, I suppose I’m not as imaginative lol
When that 99 turbo appear on screen, I feel like I've fallen in love, what a beautiful car.
My neighbor had one … a black one too, what a blast
I must say James looks like a perfect Saab driver in that polo shirt lol
James is the perfect saab driver
I don't know, the turtleneck screams Saab to me!

My grandfather broght Saab to the US

I like the night panel tho, less distraction.
For me it was the opposite, I had fun turning it on and off!
I looked up the 'extra' switch - it's simply an extra switch that you can hook something up to, doesn't do anything on its own.
Lmao
I know that’s true, but I love the idea of having a switch they just says “extra” on it :-)
I learned how to drive manual in a 2003 Saab 9-3 convertible. Still one of my favorite cars
I learnt to drive in 1998 Saab 9-5 sedan. Felt cool driving it to my school
@@marchingWHU I drove a ‘84 900 stick … put 407k on it, original engine
I was actually interested in James talking about water injection

@@aeropilot4419 Use pure oxygen for strongest spark. Or Nitrous oxide, pure oxygen causes a preignition in the chamber and it explodes the engine.

I LOVED the key in the middle! Except when I occasionally spilled something down there 😅

extra buttun is extraljus or extra lights in english, in example you hook up two "cibie rally" headlights extra
2:42 aftershave remark feels like it is directed at Script Editor Porter (SniffPetrol)
Maybe I love Saab so much because we operate in the same manner: wacky ideas that only SOMETIMES worked. 😊
I like the night panel button means I’m not blinded by modern day digital screens when driving
Hahahaha that old 9-3 had the pixel problem. Been there done that
2:25 …and today we have a Turbo EV from Porsche 😂 nothing’s changed
SAAB viggen jet did have reverse tbf.
Does anybody know the name of the song that starts playing at 1:55?
The 99 turbo is a Brutalist 911
2:23 turbo lawnmower

Saab fighter jets have reverse though.

Yes their dumb ideas won't make production and the company would actually be profitable unlike they were in the past.
The word "turbo" became famous in the 80's because of F1 and rallying. It had little or nothing to do with Saab.
The 99 was the first car for the masses to have a turbocharger
