There is this small gap in Top gear used car challenges where: Episode too old car too expensive Episode too new car too expensive you need to get the small gap between the two
It was all Top Gear. When Jeremey shows up and introduces himself, the car door doesn't cut or close, so he continues his introduction, closes the door, and presto.
3:25 ~ 3:31: * Guy with Speedometer (reading James' Jag): "Error....." * Jeremy: "What do you mean 'error'?" * Richard: "He'll never do that again!" * Jeremy: "Why does that never happen with the police!?!" That conversation always cracks me up! 😂🤣😂🤣
that bit there just gives a clear picture that behind the scenes, they all laughed their arses off every time. It really was a playground for that crew!
James should have been given minus 140 points for the speed challenge because, his speed didn't actually get recorded. I'm puzzled by Richard's car doing 110 mph and the radar picking up 115 mph. That would lead me to believe either his speedo is out or the radar is wrong.
I should've stopped playing with transformers and went out to buy cars apparently

Nothing shows the collapse of our modern capitalist economy like the spiking housing and car prices its so unbearable!!! Whenever i listen to these guys or really any early 90s-2000s media talk about pricing i can see why culture seemed much more cheerful back then compared to universal cynicism nowadays The craziest thing i have learned honestly is that luxury and supercar werent always synonymous and you could actually purchase like a cool Italian supercar for completely reasonable sums, like wow did the global economy go down the shitter post 2008 and especially post covid lol
Early TG and the older Cheap Car challenges are just so cozy to rewatch. Very quaint compared to what a modern car show challenge would be, takes me back to a nice simpler time.
This is the first Top Gear episode I remember watching, on the 29th May, 2005, at the age of 12, in a hotel room with my parents while on holiday in Portsmouth.
Home from work, wifes gone to work, left me some Tatty Ash and some crusty bread and i turn the TV YT on to this, absolute GEM an early TG Cheap Car Challenge & as i sat down i said i was first to arrive
This was pure Top Gear. Jeremey appears, introduces himself, car door won't shut, doesn't cut, proceeds to carry on introduction, shuts car door, and voilà ..
To me, it shows how important the original editing was, the entire experience goes from 10/10 to 7/10 just because they swapped the music (and sloppily re-edited it)
I had a 82 Starion when i was 19 man Around 1998?. It was awesome. Full digital dash in the 90s! I loved it. HUGE 2.6L I4 motor and Turbo 5 speed trans. Was great. I've so many cars in my life i cant even remember what i did with it. did i sell it? give it away to a friend or family? i just cant remember! Cool Story, I went to a Wedding in Mexico with it. about 3am after many hours of dancing and drinking i decided to head beck to the next town where my gran lived. I drove flat out the whole 20 miles. Fastest it would go was about 135MPH. I could see the digital engine temp pips on dash go up 1 by one every few minutes lol! What a great memory, underrated car for sure.
Hey. morning gentlemen's Lovely to See your Three Together Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond and James May it's a fantastic show you gentlemen's have I Like you guys keep me updating with Top Gear 🙏😉
I like to think i had most of the Top Gear Challenge Compilation DVDs though this one wasnt on any that i purchased,so im thankfull for posting even if in part. Do recall seeing The Stig throw his hands up in the Jag when it was on tv and of course the curves in the background on the alpine course were where Daniel Craig's Aston Martin were rolled in his first Jamed Bond outing of Casino Royale many years later, and the lorrying challenge 😊
The Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest TSi was a Very fun little car. I owned a black, '88 Conquest TSi back when I was still in High School(mid-'90s).
The days when you could get a 635i for £1500… This challenge did start a love affair with the 6-Series in general. I own a second gen, but would LOVE to be able to own an E24 635i, bit of a dream car nowadays.
@@minispejson yea and they just missed the speed gun clock of it, stuck a mist machine under it and temporarily fixed it by changing the oil and water.
HEY CAPTIAN SLOW! I had a Chrysler Conquest (The corporate cousin of the Mitsubishi Starion), in much better shape than Clarkson's, and it didn't leak and burn oil and leave a cloud in its wake. And the Starion waxed May's J-a-a-a-a-a-ag! 🤣 Now an oil leaking contest . . .
Not gonna lie, I'd definitely go with the jag if I could get one for one and a half grand. And then I'd dump another grand or so into it to upgrade the fuel system, as well as more money to get that V12 into a reasonably reliable condition. Why? Because a friend of the family had one and it caught fire and burned their garage down due to the infamous fuel rail defect. XJSs are weird and honestly kinda neat cars, so it's worth putting the extra money and effort into them.
One of my favourite challenges. In hindsight, they could have entered amateur rally cross with these and it would have also been great. Instead of making their own event in a field.
I’ve seen every episode of top gear multiple times, the specials countless times. But I genuinely have no memory of this challenge. First time ever seeing it. I’m so confused
What stylish two-door coupe (that's not a Porsche) would you have bought?
What it is , is a mitsibushi st-starrion, i errr i always loved these, and this the last one ever imported into britain.
Starion. No discussion.
God damn are these depressing.
Jeremy's car was 14 years old and he got it for £1,500.
It's a different world now.
Remember when he got the car for £1. The government was literally spending money on scrapping cars which didn't deserve it, when so many could have been saved.
How is it different. You can pick up a boxster for 3000£ which adjusted for inflation isn’t more expensive than this
@horvathr95 You are not getting a 2010 boxster for 3 grand.
@@nickrulez809765 Ok and why do you need a 2010 specifically? Look at 986 Boxster prices
that would be £2500 now roughly speaking. fucking crazy
Jeremy's chuckle at the water bucket challenge was the most sincere I've ever heard. It's a sad fact of life.
“And I was the first to arrive” is my 4th favourite quote of all time

You couldn't get a blown up version of all these cars today for the price.
Kit cars are our only hope. Some of them blokes are after performance. Me? Im fine with looks alone.
I found ten XJSs, two 635s, and twelve Starions under that price. Some of them looked at least as good as those.
Also. Inflation.... 1500 is probably around 3000 in today's money
Adjust the price for inflation you dope
bought my 85 xjs-c 4 months ago for 1500, sure had no mot or floorpans or any working dash array or blinkers..... but it is a v12 and it runs
not so cheap anymore
A good condition Starion GSR VR probably go for 30k £ 😮 now
Imagine car prices today still being like then. I could have a dream car garage under 20k (excluding exotics)
bought my 85 xjs-c for 1500 about 4ish months ago, sure it has no mot or floodboards but it is a v12

So glad this is finally on TH-cam in good quality. Always loved this challenge.
me too, quintessential Top Gear for me
It looks INCREDIBLE
Though the music on this particular version is rubbish
I don’t even know where you could find the early season stuff anymore, they stopped making pre season 10 dvds years ago.
The stock music replacement near ruins it though. The original soundtrack perfectly matched the episode

Thank the heavens for these guys and giving us this show it will never get old, love them.

There will never be another show like this. GOLD.
Never noticed it before. Jezza's car at about 0:57 is basically MADE of body filler!
