@@haileyparsons3844 - I know it's a nickname but in this little clip, it's very overused and I found that (personally) very cringy and somewhat unsettling. To me again personally, the dad was acting very suspicious (more so than the daughter) and I was just getting that vibe, that bad sort of vibe, where there could be more going on in the shadows. I haven't seen this in an episode yet so I'm just going off what I am seeing here at the moment. Hope that makes sense and you can understand. :)
The reason this type of abuse occurs is due in large part to negligence followed by a period of overbearing/controlling period where the parent pays attention to the child only in a particular circumstance.
In this case, the father was being negligent of his child's needs during a period of emotional instability for both of them and would only pay attention to her if she was sick. So her body started to convert her emotional needs into physical symptoms and made her sicker so she would have emotional gratification from being sick.
The reason this is classified as abuse is that there is a significant psychological impact placed upon the child here that may or may not be improved with time. 1. A negligent parent not paying attention to their child's emotional needs during a period of uncertainty 2. A sudden increase in attention for a period of time 3. repeated behaviour creates a pavlovian effect.
The same thing will happen if you only pay attention to your child when they do their homework, they will do more and more homework to get your validation until they are not sleeping or eating properly due to only wanting to do homework to get your validation.
Essentially, if you spend time with your kids regardless of the circumstances there will be no negligence or abuse. Make time for your children in your life and you will be a good parent.
The same goes for partnerships or, really, relationships of any kind.
This reminds me of Munchausen’s.

I am disabled and therefore go to the hospital a lot. I can promise you that a lot of times the doctor think they know best. Every patient is different and in med school you just learn one or a few of the “possibilities”. The child is the one who knows the symptoms and feelings best, and a lot of times the parent can know better than the doctor. After having an undiagnosed sickness for 9 years, going to multiple different doctors (one of them was the best in our country) no one knew what was wrong with me. But one day my mom thought she found out what she was so she talked to the doctor, he tasted me and she was right.

A dad can unintentionally abuse his child? Oh god that’s making me terrified of being a dad even more
Someone can unintentionally abuse their kind if they become too overbaring and overprotective. Specially when the parents are constantly scared of what the world might do tho their babies. They are trying to be good parents but at the same time, the child might develop anxiety and fear of the outside because of that overprotectivenes. Being a parent is the hardest thing in the entire world.
This situation is actually on the kid. Hiw are you going to play up your medical conditions to make him happy to take care of you without thinking how it hurts him to see you suffer in the first place before getting better
Cycles of abuse can make someone unintentionally abusive. Being protective and over bearing can also become abusive. Not respecting a child's bounderies and all can also become abusive. A lot of people aren't aware of their toxic traits and qualities and it can lead to them being unitentionally abusive, let alone as parents.
It's scary to think about, but even being aware of it shows that you're not gonna be like that. You're gonna be a good dad, Thomas
@@Ebunoluwa13 you can’t really blame it on the kid. She was probably young when her mom died, leaving her with a grieving caregiver. She found a way to make her dad less sad and repeated that. She is too young to see the consequences and moral implications of her actions.
The way to stop that happening is to listen to others and admitting when youre wrong. I know you think you know how to parent but it is always a good idea to reach out to other parents and take advice from them. If youre really nervous, think about joining a support group. I know that sounds weird but it really does help!

This is based on the Justina Petellier case, if anyone wants to look into the IRL story. It’s still not known if her case was conversion disorder or mito.
@@lulebliri9776 Seems to me like it was a case of malpractice on the hospital's end. Supposedly the conditions they kept her in were horrible and the family were slowly refused visitation and a second opinion. Also, if it hadn't been mito she'd have gotten better after a year spent in the hospital, but she instead got worst, to the point where she ended up in a wheelchair. Sounds horrendous. I'm absolutely disgusted that the hospital essentially got away scot-free after what they put her through.

Just because a case is similar doesn’t meanp it is based on it. This show takes real life situations and makes up a story with it. It isn’t based of a specific case, certainly not the case you mentioned. This is a real psychological disorder that happens to people all over the world.

I think the gypsy case was more to do with her mother’s issues with munchausen by proxy but in this case it appears to be that the father would only pay attention/care for the daughter (in her eyes) when she was sick, so her body would give her physical symptoms because the psychological impact of neglect was so strong. Almost like, if you only pay attention to your kid when they’re doing homework, if you do that enough then they’re gonna start doing more and more homework, that it then will impact things like eating and sleeping, just to get the validation from the parent.

It’s not as extreme as the father presenting munchausen by proxy ‘symptoms’. To be classified as such, the father would need to be inflicting injuries or illness or making up that his child is sick. The however is more psychological on the girls part because she’s presenting symptoms merely as a projection of her own emotional state.
Have you noticed she always immediately improved when about to have a needle? She's possibly afraid of them and that's what switches her brain to being ok again. Only a possibility though

The dad wants nothing more than his child - his precious innocent darling daughter - to be safe so he does everything possible to make sure she is. Even if it means unintentional abuse . He doesn’t realise he’s doing it because he thinks what he is doing is ok. It’s things like when they get a little pinch and asking if the child is ok that’s normal but then they keep on doing it over and over again even after the child has said it’s ok and that nothings wrong then the father gets angry and starts to shout at her because he wants to know she’s ok. That’s the sort of unintentional abuse that’s happens

No. Its not that. Due to evolution, a child and caretaker will try to make eachother happy. The girl saw her dad sad, so her brain used a physical illness to make her dad look after her. Seeing that the illness was making him less sad and the let the child get the attention they needed the brain unconciously kept this up. It wasn't abuse it was a cycle of them trying to look after each other, the way that a child needs to make their care taker happy (subconciously) and the father's traumer of losing his wife motivating him to be overbearing on his daughter.
(Also the things like her stomach hurting and feeling dizzy and stuff could be linked to high amounts of stress, I may be wrong but this is usually how I react to high amounts of stress)
You can see the way her dad is tryna cover up obvious abuse.

However, you're missing a huge chunk of context as to why both father and daughter are behaving the way they do. Simply put, Michelle's body may have converted emotional symptoms into physical ones because she thought her dad would only take care of her if she was sick, hence the many physical symptoms and trips to the hospital.
It might be solely her dad's fault for neglecting Michelle while he was grieving the loss of his wife, but that means he wasn't able to cope with the death in a healthy way and it's not entirely his fault as well. People need time to heal, but it's 1000% much more harder to grieve when you are also a caretaker.

This kinda stuff really gets to me, how unfair it can be. You’ll have situations like this and families get ruined but when I was a kid I spent so much time in hospital, begged and cried not to be sent home, to go anywhere else. Heard a billion times “if I had a magic wand and could change anything, what would you want that to be?” And I’d always say I want to go live anywhere else, I didn’t care if it was an institution or the streets, just anywhere but home. They always sent me back though. Sometimes I wonder how different my life would have been if I’d just picked up a knife as a kid and defended myself, I still regret not doing that because nobody else tried to help me. Should have taken matters into my own hands

The results of your situation depended on why you were admitted to the hospital, the laws and support systems of that time in the country in which you live.
Just because we want our circumstances to be different does not mean that it was possible.
Whether you were neglected, abused, or used and manipulated...
Other options could lead to worse circumstances.
......foster care is not always better than your home of origin.......
.....institutions can treat you as if you were an adult even if you are a teen/preteen, where you would have been responsible for your behaviour.
For example:
If you got angry at home and threw a glass of orange juice at your father you could be grounded, verbally abused or beaten.
If you threw that same glass of juice at a foster parent you could be removed from that home and become a ward of the state.
If you threw it at a staff member in an institution you could have been charged with assault.
Ideally, we all should have a primary care giver that bonds with us and loves us as we deserve.
The reality is we are all animals with gifts and not everyone uses their gifts.....
Either through ignorance or choice.
Not every family of origin or country of origin has the infrastructure to support the being best of humanity.

Like helping children that are in the same situation that you found yourself in.
Look into supporting children directly or in lobbying the government to develop or change the support services so people like you do not feel unheard and unprotected.

I've done some research. The name is Rivers Syndrome. Based on a nurse in 1952, Charlotte Rivers, who was in charge of a girl with Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Every time she got better, she would all of a sudden have a relapse. Rivers syndrome is when a caregiver provokes a condition in a dependent so they'll continue to be dependent upon them and won't leave ever.

@@rochelloelofsen6471 Nope. Munchausen's by proxy is completely intentional on the behalf of the caregiver and usually there's nothing wrong with the actual person.

Munchausen by proxy is worse as they invent something that was never there.

Dr. Manning is so confusing. In another episode, she immediately asked Sharon to call Child Services on the mother of a baby she mistakenly diagnosed with SBS. I was even shocked that she went with it promptly while she was still waiting for an ultrasound result.
And now, she saw videos that there's something wrong, insists on finding out more and not "labeling this guy an abuser."
Yup, I think it's a bit of overflow among writers thus they lose consistency of character between each author.

Guys a parent calling there kids nicknames like “Kiddo and “Sweetie” is perfectly normal, don’t know why most people don’t.
Tons of good parents do this to there kids more so when they are younger, as they get older, they don’t but if there are sick or worry sometimes they do it as a comfort thing because it’s feels familiar and safe, since it reminds you of childhood.

I hope you guys know that this is what grieving can do to people, that man doesn’t realize what he’s doing but him grieving over his wife has put him in an unhappy state. I still don't understand why people fight with doctors like they know more than they do. Just because one doctor said something does not mean it's right. That's why when I got my glasses we went to 2 different optometrists to make sure that it was the best option.

The dad is the kind of patient relative that i hate dealing with as a doctor. He literally asked a doctor if he knows better than him !!! Not To mention how disrespectful he is to everyone.

This reminds me of something, I've been going to the doctor with my mother in the room all the way up until 2020, I had an appointment and since I'm a legal adult which is 16 where I live, I had to go in by myself due to covid restrictions, I was nervous af and was scared to be by myself with my doctor since everytime before I could hardly get a word out infront of the doctors, but as soon as I stepped into that room and said hi to the doctor in the practise I felt calm, I managed to explain everything and we were able to get my depo provera all done and sorted and I even managed to get a follow up appointment planned for my next jab, I've actually formed a rather nice bond with that doctor and it turns out I know her son from a club I go to, how great is that?
I think I'm not the only one who feels this way though, because of our home lives we feel nervous to open up about health issues to the people that should hear about health issues when infront of a parent
In that sense, I'm kinda glad that covid happened, it's a terrible thing, dont get me wrong but if covid never happened then I never would have gained that little bit of independence and I never would have been able to bring up the possibility of going on testosterone with my gp who is a different doctor who I'm not as comfortable with yet, hopefully one day I'll be able to talk to the doctors office over the phone but I'm not good at talking over the phone just yet, I doubt I'll ever be able to do that well but hopefully
When I was in labour with my mother for company I was a big wimp. When my birth coach showed up I stopped being her child and spoke like an adult with the other adult. Change is scary but good for us.
