I don't remember the exact year, but sometime in the mid to late seventies I had the privilege of seeing Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and Ella Fitzgerald at the Vancouver Playhouse. I regret to say that I was in my twenties and new to jazz at the time, and didn't fully appreciate what I was seeing and hearing. How fantastic to have had this broadcast on TV. In the UK, the only live musicians we saw on TV were "variety artists". The BBC considered jazz to be "below stairs" so was rarely if ever shown. Thank you for giving us the chance to watch it.
@@michaelrossi6733 That's true, Michael, but certainly not as long as this concert and certainly not as early as 1958. The "archive" you refer to is presumable the Jazz 625 programmes which weren't broadcast until the mid 1960s from memory and have been rebroadcast off and on since the 1980s. Weekly jazz on radio was usually late at night until the 1990s and are still few and far between on BBC.
@@harri2626 I'd certainly agree that there has been nowhere near enough on the BBC in terms of jazz. Radio 3 seems to be flying the flag a bit, but even there I'd appreciate more. About the archive, yes I was referring to Jazz 625 but also plentiful other recordings a friend who works in the BBC archives showed me (although indeed the majority of those were from the 1960s onwards)
Just great to see. What a treasure. Ella in her prime. Great to see Stuff Smith handle that violin like the swing/blues instrument it never knew it could be. And Oscar...
Guitarist Herb Ellis is a absolute master of his instrument and defines what being a Rhythm guitarist is all about. i think from what i see he plays with his thumb with a pick and sometimes without a pick . soo.... smooth
Ray Brown! what amazing footage of all of these wonderful artists...love seeing Ray Brown's casual versatility, switching from bow to fingers and back was just excellent.
I too like one other am 71 and had the fortunate experience of seeing a concert in the 70’s with Oscar Peterson, Count Basie ,Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Pass , and it was a real eye opening inspiring event for a young guitarist at that time in San Francisco.
Drum solos aren't normally my thing, but I was very impressed with this one. You can tell he's someone who really enjoys what he does. He must have spent ages just figuring out what random noises he can make with his kit and how to work them into the music.
joe jones is a percussive genius, just look at him and the fluidity and ease in his movements, I definitely think this is a true drum master and a brilliant musician.
Pa Pa Joe Jones is a genius drummer and has the biggest most genuine smile on earth . a total eclipse of the sun could occur if his smile floated by the sun .
ELLA was one of those true geniuses of which can be said: singing known pieces..SHE INVENTED NEW expressions from what would be commonly understood meanings in the lines...she ALWAYS finds something new,,new layers of meaning...
Everyone goes on about Oscar Peterson and every bit of it s true if not more. He speaks for himself as is in a league of his own. However, that drummer was beyond amasing. All he needed to do after was spin on his head. I could have watched an hour long on his diverse rhythmical drumming taking one down an exploration of beats in all its glory. I don’t think even the best of today’s drummers are as good as him and should use him as their only mentor. I also loved the way that guitarist slapped his guitar but I think some of the great sound was coming from the drummer to say the least. The violin had such a different feel to just ear exposed to classical and was music to my ears. Loved all the instrumentalist. All at the top height of their game and would put today’s instrumentalist to the test if not with some be too much for them. What a concert played by geniuses of music. As for the second half with Ella - well I don’t want to write too much. This must be one of the greatest concerts ever if there was. 😊❤
I was only 9, and never heard it until my mid 20's when I discovered Jazz, and we didn't have much on TV, not of this calibre. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. But thanks to my Dad, I knew who Ella Fitzgerald was. What a lady, what a voice.
38:20 -- Oscar's devine touch, or is it distinctly human.... Best footage I've seen in ages, but to see my heroes in their early 30s is really topping it all.... So alert, yet relaxed and completely in tune... Long overdue if I may say so, boldly.
It's simple MY BROTHER... "GOD" IN THOSE HANDS. ONLY "GOD" can create such talent. I just turned 57 this year. It hasn't been 2wks since I asked my Pops about jazz, because I like it. Pops reply was OSCAR PETERSON..PERIOD. So I pull him up. Mind you, I never heard of him until then. Long story short..Oscar Peterson..The Best Jazz Pianist..EVER..
I was there also .. was a sophomore at Purdue University… that was a wonderful time for outstanding music in this country.. I tell my grandchildren they missed it all!
I was almost 3 years old at the time of this concert. I have some Oscar Peterson Trio and Ella Fitzgerald CD's which I absolutely love listening to but this is the first time that I watched this incredibly fantastic concert. Simply awesome!
What's so special about JAZZ is..again my opinion..you expressing yourself through the instrument. Nothing is scripted. Long story short..You playing how you feel

Ella, Ella, Ella!!!! God's blessing to us!
Just great to see. What a treasure. Ella in her prime. Great to see Stuff Smith handle that violin like the swing/blues instrument it never knew it could be. And Oscar...
Guitarist Herb Ellis is a absolute master of his instrument and defines what being a Rhythm guitarist is all about. i think from what i see he plays with his thumb with a pick and sometimes without a pick . soo.... smooth
Ray Brown! what amazing footage of all of these wonderful artists...love seeing Ray Brown's casual versatility, switching from bow to fingers and back was just excellent.
saw Oscar, Ella and Joe Pass in the 1980s at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles CA USA. MOST AMAZING
Joe Pass was amazing.

I too like one other am 71 and had the fortunate experience of seeing a concert in the 70’s with Oscar Peterson, Count Basie ,Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Pass , and it was a real eye opening inspiring event for a young guitarist at that time in San Francisco.
I have an hipothesys that there are "professional dislikers" that keep messing around the TH-cam, you know? "G"!
Ella is the best of the best. We love you Ella.
Look how happy Joe Jones is playing his wonderful drums. He is just smiling away as he enjoys playing for the people. His solo is great! SYLVIA!
Qq
Drum solos aren't normally my thing, but I was very impressed with this one. You can tell he's someone who really enjoys what he does. He must have spent ages just figuring out what random noises he can make with his kit and how to work them into the music.
joe jones is a percussive genius, just look at him and the fluidity and ease in his movements, I definitely think this is a true drum master and a brilliant musician.
Pa Pa Joe Jones is a genius drummer and has the biggest most genuine smile on earth . a total eclipse of the sun could occur if his smile floated by the sun .
Ella was unbeatable and still is.
A Queen.
Totally
Beautiful, love being able to see them play. ❤️Oscar Peterson was a great pianist, Ella Fitzgerald, the greatest singer.
WOW !!! THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC !!!!
ELLA was one of those true geniuses of which can be said: singing known pieces..SHE INVENTED NEW expressions from what would be commonly understood meanings in the lines...she ALWAYS finds something new,,new layers of meaning...
In my early twenties I had the special occasion to listen to her in Rio at the Copacabana Palace. Something to remember forever.
Herb was the best third man in Oscars trio of all trios Oscar ever had!
I thought Ed Thigpen was magnificent...
I really liked the earlier stuff with Barney kessel. Crazy how much his and herb’s careers crossed paths
Uhhhh... Herb was great indeed, Oscar loved him... but Joe Pass gets my vote
Que serait le jazz sans toi ELLA . . . Elle a tout, la voix le coffre le coeur
Man you’re absolutely right! That solo was epic! It was a concert in its own right - absolutely riveting all through!
I was only 9, and never heard it until my mid 20's when I discovered Jazz, and we didn't have much on TV, not of this calibre. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. But thanks to my Dad, I knew who Ella Fitzgerald was. What a lady, what a voice.
Unbelievable quality of sound...!!!!!!!
The great Montrealer Oscar Peterson, what a musician and here with Ella. If paradise exist then these musicians will be playing.
One more thing...When GOD gives u talent like that..It(The Talent) speaks for itself.
@@johnmoore1436 Herb Ellis was pretty talented, too!
Every now and then you can catch Herb Ellis vocalizing then Ray Brown. Those guys whole bodies were music. 21:34
one of historys great clips....you will never see this again...Ella and Oscar with his trio
Vielen vielen herzlichen Dank dass dieses wunderbare Konzert auf TH-cam publiziert wurde.
Da ich Jazz at the Philharmonic
Selbst wiederholte Male in Wien gesehen habe ist es wunderbar diese Größen wieder zu hören! Danke sehr!
my first introduction to jazz as an 8 yr old was the music of oscar peterson and ella fitzgerald..jazz the best music ever...love it
Lucky you!
I was fortunate enough to see them live in Munich, in 1971
Superb Music Entertainers ~ They were The Best Of The Grandest Best❣❣❣👏👏👏👏👏🎵🎶🎵🎶Elegant Presentation ~ Damals🥰👍
I love and respect all the musicians, but Stuff Smith blows my mind! A jazz violinist!
I was there also .. was a sophomore at Purdue University… that was a wonderful time for outstanding music in this country.. I tell my grandchildren they missed it all!
No Jones, the classiest drummer ever. Thanks for posting.
Come on now! This is unreal! And I haven't gone through 2 minutes!!!!
Peterson, best pianist EVER! Saw Brown in concert in '93 in SF! Purest jazz combo............THE. TRIO!!!
I am so appreciative that these performances exist in such good quality and especially enjoyed Herb Ellis playing guitar for all.
I got all This Musicans autograph’s in 1957. Still have them (in 2021)
One More Thing JAZZ LOVERS...To Me, This Trumpet Solo captures the true essence & feel of playing JAZZ...I'll try not to say more
I'm 84 now, all these artists I grew up with, treasured memories I have.
I don't think I have seen a video of Stuff Smith on violin until now. Great treasure!!
Herb Ellis is magnificent in this concert!
Jazz is real and a good one of those who have been around for years
That must be one of the greatest memory of you.
I envy you.
Ella's imitation of Louis Armstrong is amazing
Excellent from start to finish. Lots of sound. Great
Thanks to TH-cam and World of Jazz for this treasure. Does it get any better?
