  • Louis Armstrong & his All Stars Live in Berlin. 1965. My Father, Eddie Shu on clarinet. The clarinet is very quiet in the mix because that's the reality with horns. The solo's are fine.

Crazy to think that Americans, Soviets and former Nazi party members were in attendance to this concert, just to see Louis Armstrong perform.

Never sufficiently credited as an addition to the all stars, Tyree Glenn was playing superb trombone behind Pops. The highlight of this set comes early: an imperishable "Black and Blue". There's a back story thst I cant remember that engendered the sheer ferocity of Pops's playing here! He was very angry at something or someone.

Put it this way, I've listened about 3 or 4 times this week now. I was drunk as a skunk the other day with mates crashing out in the room with me and just had to put this on to finish the night off to, was 4 wasted guys in a room in awe of what they were hearing . This is a total GEM. You ought to be massively proud as I am sure you are.

I think this was recorded live in EAST Berlin (amazing) at the Friedrichsstadt Palast, March 22, 1965. (Soviet controlled East Berlin allowed some jazz concerts after World War II, but the regime initially resisted it as an American influence on culture. In 1947, Ernst Busch established Eterna Records for jazz, folk, classical, and church music. By 1960, the West German minister of defense declared jazz to be music for the new West German army, and it could be heard on state-sponsored radio and television stations. Surprised they allowed in this all American group to East Berlin. (Bet they went crazy!!)

(Thank God for You Tube...and MANY thanks to the person who posted this. I've now watched this at least a dozen times. Never gets old. I especially love the variations on "Hello Dolly" at 14:89 and 16:06 (the chord progression & improv).
Wondering where they were playing in Berlin in 1965 (had to be West Berlin, as this kind of music was outlawed in East Berlin under Soviet rule...)

I saw your father with Gene Krupa at some point around 1960--at Boston's Storyville. He was a real pro who could play convincingly in any style. This concert from 1965 is probably the last time Pops was still in truly great trumpet form. Of course by then he had blown about FOUR lifetimes of really strong, powerful trumpet!

The best musician in the band, apart from Pops, was Billy Kyle. He had great time, took good solos, and served as something of a music director for various projects begun by record producers like Milt Gabler and George Avakian

Evan, I am related to you. My mother Rebecca Shulman who is 96 yrs. old is Eddie's first cousin. They used to spend summers together in Brooklyn, NY. ,where Eddie lived then. I'm a musician. When I was fortunate enough to receive a grant from the National Endowment For The Arts to go to New York in 1977 and learn with Lennie Tristano, (who also know Eddie by the way, Eddie responded to a letter sent to him by my mom about this grant and Eddie wrote he was happy to learn that there was another saxophonist in the family. I was saddened to learn a little latter that Eddie died. I wanted to meet him someday. He was one of my idols since the time that I was a kid. My other cousin Roger Greenberg another saxophonist in our family had previously met Eddie. My mom is still alive. I put some samples of my own musical efforts on You Tube under my name, tomtaksa My mom says in her opinion, I was influenced by Eddie's playing. Thank you for sharing this historical music. The least I can do is share my own musicial efforts at just my own ability. My mom used to tell me all about Eddie and how he was self taught. I think I heard that you play. I think music should not be hidden. Thank you, once again for your generosity, in sharing these things with everyday people such as myself. Sincerely, Tom Taksa
