- The china clay mines in the centre of Cornwall once dominated the global industry for the material. Cornish china clay could be found in a variety of products, from the glossy surface on photographic paper to ingredients in toothpaste and skincare creams. The chances that you have used Cornish china clay without realising is very high.
Since the 1990s, when the pits employed over 4000 people, a rapid decline in the industry has led to the pits around St Dennis to employ less than 1000.
An industry digging up around 65,000 tonnes of clay annually for nearly 200 years has left the landscape looking more lunar than Cornish.

The official reason for the decline is increased costs off production, but more likely it’s cheaper elsewhere.

It is a wonderful place to live - although there are high levels of deprivation in the area.
