  • Exploring the oldest section of Wheal Droskyn at Perranporth. Work at Wheal Droskyn spanned centuries and even millenniums, starting as early as the Iron Age and closing during the 19th century. This section of the mine, located on the side of the cliffs near Perranporth, is approximately 2,000 years old, and recent research shows that this may be the earliest example of mining in Cornwall, although there are other places which hold this claim as well, including Godolphin Hill, down in West Cornwall between Helston and Penzance, where it is believed there may have been mining from the early Bronze Age there, well before Wheal Droskyn opened.
Please do not enter this or any other Cornish mine without anyone with proper knowledge. Although this section of Wheal Droskyn is relatively safe, the more modern 18th and 19th century sections most definitely are not, and sadly an 11 year old girl died after falling down a shaft while exploring the more modern workings of Wheal Droskyn, after mistaking it for a cave, in 2010. Please stay out and stay safe

Very interesting video, thanks Lucas, I've explored those caves, and it's fascinating exploring the ones at sea level too. Amazing to see the old photos of the mines before Perranporth became a tourist surfing town.

Such beautiful colours in these stone walls. And imagine this was once someone's "office". I am glad it wasn't me :) I have walked the coastal path above this place but was unaware of the mines. Thank you for showing :)

Hey man, if you're ever in need of a second camera or some climbing gear to get to more precarious places,, haha, I'd be happy to tag along and lend a hand!
