Action video of China Clay Train/Boat operation centred on the English China Clay (Imerys) facility at Fowey Docks, Cornwall. Views of a large china clay ship entering and leaving Fowey harbour. Descriptive commentary on clay loading facilities. Operation moves approximately 2,500 tonnes of Clay per week and saves approximately 11,000 lorry journeys per annum.
Superb point of view to see this operation happening! I was there a a few years back on a trip with Maurice Dart but on the land and nothing was moving at the time. Thanks for posting this!
It's probably worth noting that the existing railway line from Lostwithiel to Fowey originally ran right through to St Blazey/Par. The route was a single track duplication of the west coast main line. There used to be a passenger railway station at Fowey. The building remains but it is now isolated from the railway. Nowadays the track bed from Fowey to Par has been converted to a private road specifically for china clay lorries. The ship loading facility is serviced both by rail from Lostwithiel and by the private road from Par. A main driver for conversion of the track bed from Fowey to Par was the stranglehold over the mining operation that the railway had during industrial action.
