The actor who plays Bishop Brennan still hasn't seen this episode as it was the last time he worked with Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) before he died the day after filming finished for Series 3 and it is still too hard for him to watch.

Fun Fact - Jim Norton (Bishop Brennan) has never watched this episode, due to the pain of Dermot Morgan's(Father Ted) passing only a day after the final episode was filmed. Really touching.

Dick Byrne and Cyril MacDuff were the other priests in A Song For Europe.
An interesting fact is that the Rugged Island cast were all the second choices for Ted, Dougal, Jack and Mrs Doyle, but they wanted to cast them anyway so created the Rugged Island parish as rivals for Craggy Island

'Chirpy, Burpy Cheap Sheep' is generally ok, but does include the single funniest throwaway ever (described in the script as '...one, isolated fucking hell').

I have NEVER been so invested in a football match in my life! My favorite bit is watching Dougal protect the flags though. There are so many great episodes of Father Ted, but the football match is my absolute favorite!!

Re the pyjamas - in one episode Dougal wears that famous t-shirt "it's a priest thing, you wouldn't understand" - which is almost a synonym for "that would be an ecumenical manner"
Ted jumping through window when it first aired had me laughing as much as 1) Chinese family looking through window, 2) Hitler moustache smudge

Father Jessop is very sarcatholic.
Still amazing that Ian Fitzgibbon, who portrayed Father Jessup in this, is now an acclaimed Irish director. He has directed a few low budget features and plenty of TV, but for the Father Ted connection he directed episodes of Moone Boy with Ted regular directer Declan Lowney.

I have watched this multiple times sincr it first aired in the 90s.
Only now do I see Jessop has a beard growth in the post credit scene. Indicating he has been there a few days at least.

These two episodes are absolute gold
I love this episode. Bishop Brennan is a great character and appears in 2 other episodes of Father Ted. The best one in my opinion is "The Plague" from Series 2. You might want to consider doing a reaction to that. You may also recognise the actor of Bishop Brennan. He was in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". He plays the visitor who comes to see Harry's uncle at the start of the film.

Been watching Father Ted since the 90's and it only show I never get tired of watching
The parody (the drum) roll was from East Enders a soap about the lives of people in the East End of London each episode ends with a cliffhanger drum roll.

I've been to the house when I was on holiday in Ireland and it looks just like that.
I believe the football episode was a nod to catholics being told not to attend the Ireland v Yugoslavia match in the 1950s on spiritual grounds.
Bloody fun programme, either way.
As someone else has noted, before watching The Mainland episode, I'd say it's necessary to watch some One Foot In The Grave to really appreciate one of the jokes in it. Trying to narrow down best episodes is difficult, but I'd recommend Hearts Of Darkness, Who Will Buy?, The Trial, The Beast In The Cage and The Valley Of Fear
Think of Rugged Island as the Bizarro World Craggy Island, the same but different. If no one else has mentioned it, the actor who plays Father Dick Byrne originally auditioned to play Ted!

You need to watch "The Passion of Saint Tibulus.It has a brief scene telling how the priest came to be on the island (sort of) and it bishop Brennan, whom you know from this episode. Plus it's an all-round funny episode.

The wonky camera in the cold open is most likely a reference to a big show of the time, like NYPD Blue or something, back when going free hand on a TV show was new.

Two things, "Escape From Victory" is a reference to Escape to Victory, the war film where a gang of Allied POWs who played football before the war, play a German team at football, in Paris. It was known just as "Victory" in the US, I think. Starred Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Max Von Sydow.

There aren't any other connected plots, but Series 1, Episode 3, The Passion of St. Tibulus, introduces who Bishop Brennan is, and he helpfully tells us how Ted, Dougal and Jack ended up stuck on Craggy Island in the first place. Love how even Jack is scared of drunk Ted. Yikes.
Bishop Brennan also appears in season two's The Plague which explains Jack's rabbit impression while being sarcastic.
Good idea to do both of these episodes together. It's pretty good isn't it? Glad you are enjoying it and that you are going to do more (all?) of them. They are all pretty good, but my vote for the next one would be 'Grant Unto Him Eternal Rest'.

Yes father ted nemeses is named Father Dick Byrne there always at each other interesting fact the guy who played Dick Byrne tried out for father Ted Crilly but didn’t feel the role was right for him so he played Dick Byrne which he did a great job loved watching father ted when I was in my teenage years visiting my grandmothers house you’ll love watching these two episodes:)

Oh yes the narcissistic Bishop Brennan, played to perfection by Jim Norton. The writers spotted him in Frasier and decided that he was perfect for the part of Len. How about New Jack City next, guest starring the late Dublin comedian Brendan Grace?

@@ctuckwell6562 well to be honest, I just read that on the internet. I didn't really like Frasier, but I am looking out for the episode with Norton in it. He also played Albert Einstein in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
@@TheDoran144 ah, I used to love Frasier so it was nice to go back and see an early episode. Norton literally has two fleeting appearances in S02E18 "The Club", yet it was enough to land him the Bishop Brennan role!
