Back in 2019 near Christmas when I was working for the Royal Mail, we would have these pre-shift meetings about progress, health and safety etc. At the end we would all get asked whether or not we had any questions to ask. One shift I asked the manager, “How come all the parcels are different sizes?” There was a about a second of silence and then the entire room exploded in laughter. There were about 30 of us. The manager thought I was being serious to the point where he told me in very specific detail as to why, he really thought I had no idea and I sold the hell out of it. Brilliant day.
You should try to get a copy of the Father Ted script book. Not only does it contain EVERY deleted scene but it has a lot of commentary. This episode was based on the writers, Linehan and Matthews, finding themselves sitting behind Richard Wilson at a Cirque du Soleil show and one suggesting to the other that whenever an act did something amazing they should loudly say 'I don't believe it!' Linehan realised that though he would never in a million years do anything like that that Ted ABSOLUTELY would, and hence the episode was born.
Sincerely RIP to the wonderful Rynagh O'Grady, she was SUPERB!!! Also in the past the wonderful Dermot Morgan, just a brilliant actor!! Loved them all!!! xx
I'm glad you weren't spoilt by others telling you this was one of the best - it's one of my all time favourites too and have been looking forward to your reaction video for it. The Very Dark Caves were actually filmed in Aillwee Cave (both interior and exterior apart from the Graham Norton scenes) in the north of Co. Clare - not that far from the location used for the Parochial house. I've been there and they get asked all the time if Fr. Noel is still down there ;) Coincidentally, to the plot line involving birds stealing glasses, Aillwee Cave also have a Bird of Prey centre! The pub that Fr. Jack goes to just before the hilarious ambulance cut scene is now also a tourist attraction because of the show.
(9:17) 'The filth' is crim-slang for the police ...in case you were puzzled, taffe. Glad you finally got 'round to this episode - it's one of the best.
Its not a term used in Ireland though, its more East End London slang, pigs would be the insult term that they could have said. They were playing to an English audience with that one.
The Mainland is a great episode, and is probably my fave from the third series. The Victor Meldrew parts are just the icing on the cake, every comedic aspect to the episode is wonderful stuff. Loved your reaction to this classic. :)
I am pretty sure that Richard Wilsons reaction to Ted saying "I don't believe it." was his idea. I think it was because he got a lot people say that to him and that was how he wanted to react, they had a diffrent idea. He wouldn't do the episode otherwise.
Really enjoying watching your Father Ted reactions. I grew up watching this show and seeing someone watch it for the first time is awesome because I know what is coming and the anticipation of your reactions is great.
Mrs Doyle's first name is given in the script for this, before it was decided to 'bleep' it. It is possible to read the police sergeant's lips as he says it. Nope, not gonna spoil it for those who prefer the mystery.
Just been watching the 2. 4 children Christmas special and had to give this a rewatch. The mainland is my absolute favourite Fr. Td. Thanks Noah I love rewatching old favourites with you. Happy Christmas pal and hope you enjoy your break🥰🥰💖
Richard Wilson really does hate that catchphrase this much. He refuses to say it outside of charity and this. Which is why I'm guessing he did this, because he gets to beat up someone who repeats it to him.
Understandable. It must be so annoying to have morons run up to you in the street and scream a catchphrase you were known for at you. Over and over and over again.
I have a feeling that every celebrity who created an easy to repeat catchphrase has regretted it bitterly - it's so easy for idiots to shout at random and think they are being absolutely hilarious, kind of like what Ted and dougal are doing at the start of the episode actually.
My mum once met her friend from work for lunch and they started saying 'I'll pay for this', 'No I'll pay', then the person behind the counter said "Which one's Mrs. Doyle?". Now when my mum's off to meet her again she says she's having lunch with Mrs. Dineen. Mrs. Doyle was supposed have a name, but then they decided it would be funnier if they didn't reveal it. I've been to the Very Dark Caves. Aillwee Cave, to give the place its real name. It's at The Burren, too. It's got a cool bird sanctuary nowadays as well. The food is pretty good there. Sorry, Dougal. 😄
Did you know: Mrs Doyle's first name was originally going to be revealed as "Joan" in one of Season 1's episodes. It's mentioned in the official Father Ted script book.
And it was nice but sad to see my friend Frank Murray, who played the waiter in the cafe. Frank died suddenly in 2016. He was also the manager of the band, The Pogues.
For me this was my second favourite episode out of the series, second behind Hell (the caravan holiday). Part of my love is that they filmed it in Ennistymon and the Ailwee caves, places I would holiday in a lot. But also it has a really high amount of jokes per minute that hit every time and makes the most out of the characters being in different (and more realistic) social situations to the surreal island characters. The fights were filmed in front of real people that were unaware of what was happening, and it makes it so good. And this is indeed Graham Nortons last episode, but he appears in one more episode you need to do.
To answer your question, yes this is Fr. Noel's last appearance chronologically. You've still got Flight Into Terror from Series 2 to watch though, which he's in.
(25:03) I'm so glad you agree - it's definitely a top-three - sooo much stuff they crammed in. They obviously had some series budget left over to do this one - outdoor locations - real populated ones (!), cast of thousands, including hiring Richard Wilson, who probz didn't come cheap in those days. I think it musta been Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews who cleaned up at the bookies, to push the boat out for this one episode. In fact: (21:37) Great reaction!
Richard Wilson was the Rector (the statutory chair of the university court; ostensibly their job is to represent students' interests; they're elected for 3 year terms) of Glasgow University when I started. His term ended that year, and Ross Kemp was elected to replace him, but since he didn't ever come to any of the meetings he was supposed to, the Students' Representative Council passed a motion asking for his resignation in October 2000. The election that followed ended with Greg Hemphill (Victor from Still Game) victorious, having won my vote with a pedge to scrap exam resit fees (which certainly didn't happen in my time).
I used to think Graham Norton did a really good job of playing an annoying twat in Father Ted. Then I saw his chat show and realised that it wasn't brilliant acting, it was brilliant casting. Also, why isn't "I'm putting you on my list of enemies" a meme?
the one quote from victor meldrew that became very catching for me is what in the name of bloody hell, I sometimes end up saying that from time to time
Stephen Merchant once met Richard Wilson. Wilson asked if he could have a cameo in "The Office" for 40.000£. Merchant joked that Wilson would do something like spill a drink or whatever and then say "I don't believe it". Merchant afterwards said how sad Wilson looked after that joke and he felt really bad.

I DON'T BELIEVE IT!
Enjoyed that. Graham Norton is in flight of terror too btw
This is Graham Norton's final appearance in the series and I think the implication here is that he did actually die under the rocks
Chronologically maybe. He still had Flight into Terror
Wish you could do Red Dwarf...maybe just the first 6 seasons
I've done 5 episodes over on Dailymotion
What's your overall impression of them?
Noah running out of space in his top 3 again lol
Miss Doyle said she would paid the fine
She probably didn't have £200 to give
FYI have you watched the feature length Christmas special A Christmassy Ted? Not to be missed.
One of my favourite episodes
