  • Hey Dungeon Squad!!! Coach Cruz is back with another video, this time going over some of the common heavy bag mistakes we see at Dungeon Boxing Club! When hitting the heavy bag, it is important to implement some of these remedies and solutions in order to prevent serious injury!
Mistake #1, standing too close to the bag.
•Not allowing full extension of punches, no extension, no power.
•Remedy - Use your jab to determine your position
Mistake #2, standing too far away from bag.
•Leaning forward leaving you exposed to counter shots.
•Overextending your arms causing pain in the elbows.
•Remedy- Use your jab to determine your position.
Mistake #3, Pushing through the bag.
    •Causes swinging in the bag.
•Remedy - Hit that bag as it is coming at you not away from you.
•Potentially causing you to injure your wrist.
•Focusing so much on the power that your hooks land more as slaps.
•Remedy - As soon as you make contact bring the hands back.
Mistake #4, Not visualizing your target.
•Landing punches on the bag that wouldn’t be effective on a person.
•Remedy - Use your own body as a guideline.
    Enjoy!

FACTS! A technique I use is marking my bag with chalk to designate body parts using my own body as a guide. This ensures my intended targets (head, body, etc) is being hit a high percentage of the punches.

Good stuff. Good for beginners and I’m a beginner. I like the mindset of “not” punching through the bag. You’re teaching the basics and you need to teach good habits that become habits that are hard to fix or cause injury. Good stuff.

You're a stud, awesome content. An additional issue is indviduals not utilising footwork while on the bag, as they tend to focus on power. My initial remedy for this is to encourage people to begin/end their combos a half-step out of range, coercing them to work on movement and distance. Generally, people feel silly stepping in and out on a straight line ad infinitum, and naturally begin to work on footwork/angles once they realise the importance of their feet.

As an athlete I am older than the rest of the Team. And know that we all measure our selves against each other. And it does not matter how hard we hit...or hit the bag...and some of us begin and put the preasure on our selves that we want to live up to our coach"S" and it some times does not always feel like we make it fun...and get out of content or not listen...but being able to feel as a team is the most important...thanks for the help/videos

I do teach my guys to fight from the opposite stance, only to be used when they get in a jam for instance like getting stuck in a corner. I don’t encourage them to be switching up during sparring or when in an actual fight, but it’s good to know how to use both sides of your body.

Really appreciate the video. I recently built a heavy bag stand and set it up in my backyard. I am having trouble with the rocking of the bag. I'm snapping my punches at an appropriate range but still cause the bag to swing a lot. The bag is 100lb

These are great tips. I believe the following steps distill would have to be....
Keep your hands up and chin down.
Also rolling the shoulders when throwing punches to continue protection.
And FOOTWORK. too many beginners are bouncing all over the damn place.
    Great video and advice!

Make sure you are using wraps.. propper ones..
Your wrists will ache but will get stronger over time.. especially take your power down on the hooks as this can expose your wrists even more.. 🥊🥊

    • @redzo94
      @redzo94 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

your wrists hurt because your ligaments are not used to hitting hard and heavy objects, i had the same problem when i was starting boxing, so that's normal. So as you keep training, your wrist ligaments will get stronger and not hurt anymore, but don't expect it would stop too soon. I recommend doing push-ups on your knuckles as an exercise for strengthening your wrists. Best of luck!

Many times I land a big right by transferring the weight on the front leg the bag swings and comes back to hit me. Not necessarily following through with the upper body but more the weight transfer. Should I just pivot, side set or cover up to block? I’ve been getting tired dancing around the bag too much. I’ve been practicing more weaves, jabbing at different levels rather than moving too much.
Good point about not punching through the bag. One trainer told me I should make the bag jump upward. Just as you said he said to bring the punch back quickly.

    • @dungeonboxingclub

Hermanus Jr he didn’t cut off the ring🤦‍♂️ I think he could have landed a few more effective shots had he cut the ring off, however you need to have good conditioning to walk down a guy like AJ.

It came in handy too as I was dropped and attacked by a dog and one inch was all I was able to manage, but it rung his bell enough he jumped back 2 feet. Never get attacked by a dog named Elvis. Do you use the Powerhide or leather version of the Ringside heavy bag? I'm looking to get one for myself and would like to know which is better. I'm assuming it's the leather version since it's $40 more and real leather is softer and more durable than synthetic leather which is what Powerhide is. Let me know. Thanks.

would you agree that Canelo is slapping with his hooks?? I felt so from watching him and GGG said something in that regard also.... do you agree ?? or is it that when u at the highest level you can throw away fundamentals. And also coach, how do you distinguish a slappiing hook from a grazing hook like Naoya Inoue's Liver shots ???
