- The 2024 VinFast VF 8 ($53,600 starting in Canada, $46,000 starting in the US), is a brand new ground up EV from a young new automaker out of Vietnam. The VF8 is their mid-size two-row crossover SUV, and it boasts a strong range of 425 km (264 miles) in the base Eco trim. In the Plus trim with the performance package it claims 391 km (243 miles) and reaches a healthy 402 horsepower and 457 lb ft of torque. But how is it to drive and live with on a day-to-day basis? Thomas and James are excited to drive their first VinFast vehicle. We hope you enjoy the episode! And then subscribe, silly.
Huge thank you @NoFreeRePhils and the Layos Family for letting us feature their VinFast!
And thank you to Naveen for bringing out his Tesla Model Y performance!

As a Vietnamese, I've finally successfully trained myself to not cry watching the 669th video mercilessly roasting the VF8.
On the other hand side: For a first model, it really doesn't look bad. If they hace the financial stamina to survive a few model years, they might end up with a solid product.
True. Back in the 90's, Hyundai and Kia were a joke. In the 80's Toyota and Honda were. In the 60's, BMW made a thing that's basically an enclosed quadracycle powered by a scooter engine.

This is not a bad start. BYD used to made much more garbage cars than this 10 years ago.
In 2020 Vinfast purchased “Lang Lang” Holden’s old test facility from GM, with the intent on doing suspension, braking calibration and refinement etc. Then less than 12 months later they decided against this and sold Lang Lang at a loss. From Thomas and James’ comments it sounds like the just put the VF8 on sale unfinished.
“Lang Lang” sounds more like a panda, or cellist
they did like 70% and said enough, and they actually thought just a Pininfarina design would do in North America, the bad reviews are seriously hurting them right now, they rushed here 3+ years too early and it wasn't ready at all
@@danielzhang1916they rushed in to milk some money from the share market....
Their comments echo literally every review I've seen of this car. The throttle response is wack, the safety features and driver assists are downright bad and dangerous, the car feels every bit of its almost 6000 pounds (how?), and the suspension is literally nauseatingly bad. This car needed probably a couple of years of R&D, optimization, and refinement. Launching too quickly is probably going to seal their fate and they will be just another failed automaker with unserviceable and now worthless orphaned cars out in the world.
@@megachonk9440 yeah they weren't ready and rushed here 3+ years too early, they still don't seem to get why there are so many bad reviews, I think this will backfire on them and sales will crash, people forget that Isuzu, Suzuki, Peugeot, etc failed and left the market because they couldn't compete

I love the interaction these two guys have so much
Unlike most commenters here who have never driven one, I was seriously considering purchasing one, and did several test drives. Its actually a good looking sporty vehicle, with dual motor at the same price as single motor Tesla. Its interior has far more features than Tesla. However, it is their first EV, and it has kinks to work out. Their Batteries are large and heavy, but do not get the same range and efficiency they should. They know they are still in learning mode, and this is a darn good entry EV for them. If tesla came out with this same car in 2013, it would have been heralded as groundbreaking. 10 years later, not so much. But it is not as bad as many commenters here are saying or even these reviewers made it out to be. I agree Vinfast should have treated this model as their "loss leader" to break into the market and sell in the $45k Cdn range instead of $60k, and the people would have been far more forgiving. Considering all are manufactured in Vietnam Im pretty sure it could have still been borderline profitable.

"Before we have our minds blown and go Vin... Really fast..." This just tickeld me so much. I love the humour the throttle house team allways puts in to their reviews.
This is a prime example of why start up should start with economy cars. The expectations are lower when you sell an economy car. Plus they only have to worry about making a car that works. And not all the bells and whistles. It too Hyundai over 30 years to go from the Pony to a real luxury car with the G90. And that’s how it should be.
EV cars are overpriced tbh. You only see them with starting prices of 50k and features that most people won't even use. I wish that some manufacturers make an 'Corolla' EV to end these bs if you can even called it "car"
@@khonloibase model 3 is 39k + the 7500 fed rebate in the US + any state or city car rebates you may get.
The issue is economy cars are more feasible for huge companies due to economies of scale. If Toyota could only make a few thousand cars a year, a Corolla wouldn’t be so cheap.
@@khonloi Oh they are, Volkswagen Polo EV and Renault Twingo EV coming in at 25 and 20k respectively, but neither will be sold in America....because, of course.
@@khonloi EV powetrains can only get so cheap because of the current cost of the battery. If you make a Corolla EV for the price of a regular corolla, the powertrain costs too much relative to the interior, chassis, etc... and you end up having to sacrifice handling, styling, build quality, interior quality and features far too much for the price of the car.
They are opening a manufacturing plant here in N. Carolina. Not too far from where I live. I really hope they improve their product. It is kind if cool having it nearby and it would be great for jobs.

Had a few Uber rides in a Vinfast EV just recently. The country is justifiably proud of the Vinfast brand. They are also determined to.improve upon it. My concern was how the plastics and accessories would handle temps that swing in Canada from -40 to +40C. Warping, cracks, squeaks and rattles seem the least of the worries. Its not ready for prime time in NA but its a big hit in Vietnam and a big step up from the Honda Dream scooter with its 110cc single cylinder 4 stroke motor. Now there is a utility vehicle! Hauls anything including up to 5 passengers. You have to admire the people of Vietnam. Hard working, ambitious and innovative.
Just a few words for those who still don't know about Vinfast, a company from Socialist Viet Nam. In the period of 10 years, Vingroup / Vinfast has ventured into many hi-tech businesses and failed miserably. They had to stop the mobile business after about 2 years. They had to stop the TV business after about 2 years. They had to stop assembling petrol cars after 3 years while other car companies like Toyota, KIA in Viet Nam are still doing well. They also had to sell the chain of supermarkets. As a car company, Vinfast has no technology and no reputation. Their level is at assembling, not manufacturing. They imports parts, compo and assemble them into finished products. In Viet Nam, Vinfast has been struggling to sell cars to break even and made losses year in year out. It's likely that they will fold before the promised five-year warranty runs out. The only thing that keeps them afloat is the real estate business, where in Viet Nam, with the political connection and corruption you can get into many lucrative housing projects. There have been a lot of land grabs in Socialist Viet Nam, where thousands of families lost their houses and land. So why all the EV noises by massive advertising?

Hi, a Vietnamese here. I was very surprised when i saw TH posted this video about the VF8, my favorite channel reviewing my country's branded car. I'm also a customer of Vinfast, using a petrol car based on the BMW 5series so it satisfied me quite well for the money. Vinfast stopped the internal combustion engine cars and started EVs so quickly and it was a mess in VN as well when it first came out. But after updates the problems you stated in the video about the system are mostly solved. I really glad that you guys and the end users overthere gave very contributing comments about the car and the brand, really hope that Vinfast will improve and make better cars for you to enjoy in the future.
I am aslo surprised that James actually came to Vietnam before, really happy that you guys brought up some of ours cultural places, foods in the video as well. Big big love from Vietnam ❤
It's a very handsome looking car. I love the front end. I'm pleasantly surprised that the interior is so nice too. Interesting vehicle
No i agree. I don’t honestly like the look of a lot of EVs. They usually have a massive unused grille looking space and it looks awkward. However this one doesn’t and the overall look i can’t complain
I’m always surprised by people’s aesthetic appreciation. I find this car overwrought and utterly conventional in every way. But there you go…
This car has a very good looking i have to say
I agree with you. I like the look, along with the fact that they did less of a rake on the back end compared with Model Y. The inclusion of buttons, knobs and a heads-up display is a nod toward people who don't want to surrender the driving experience to a flat screen. Keep working on that suspension and accelerator lag, VF.
And it's time for you to buy one
This EV has been available in the US for quite some time now. You'd think that with all the bad press they've received, someone at Vinfast would want to do something about it but apparently, they're hoping it will just go away.

Not sure about the safety of this car. A family of 4 died last week in Pleasanton, Bay Area in a 40mph accident. They died of impact, soon after VinFast car exploded in flames, they had no chance of escaping.
Just the charging point inexplicably beeping forever but doing nothing and James' face getting frozen on camera got me good. Ah, technology.
The problem is not technology, it’s EV charging companies trying to enforce artificial burdens to lock you in, with apps and subscription. At least in Switzerland you can just swipe your credit card at the remotest of petrol stations and it will work. It books 150 CHF and when you’re done it charges the exact amount and cancels the reserved amount
The issue they had is because the interoperability between Flo and Chargepoint chargers isn’t the cards - it’s thru the app. Meaning you can start a Flo charger thru the Chargepoint app and vice verse. It’s dumb.

At least they fixed the issue of them just randomly shutting off where the only way to get it moving again is to disconnect the 12v battery and pull a plug under a cover panel next to the charge plug but if you do it in the wrong order it doesn’t work and you have to do it again. I have hauled a lot of these and everyone has given me issues in some way.
