All Kia is doing is taking advantage of a loophole in the federal tax credit where Kia gets this tax credit for every lease vehicle it owns during the lease and they are passing it on to customers. Tesla and most other EV brands are doing the same.
I love mine. Just got it a few days ago, traded my EV6 in for it. And I learned something new. I had the EV6 for 2 years and never knew what that light on the dash meant. I just assumed it meant it was getting an update. And I agree about the UI, it definitely needs some work. But like you said, a lot of it can be fixed OTA, and I suspect as they get more feedback they'll make some changes.
The main thing I disagree with is that EV's should just "start" when you get in. That's great if you don't have kids, but the pregnant woman that was hit by her toddler pressing the brake pedal in their Tesla and going into gear would disagree, as would I. I say make it an option because some of us need the car starting to be a deliberate, intentional act.
It should be the act of pressing the brake and putting it in Gear. The newer Teslas don't have a gear nob or stalk anymore, that can indeed lead to accidents. Having the extra button to press if you have a turning shifter nob that needs to used while pressing the brake is too much.
Nice video as usual. Could we get a family to review this car since that is the attended audience on this one? I could see some issues for families that haven't been talked about
So I left my car in utility mode for my dog sake and I was able to lock it. It’s not convenient but if you sit in the car and lock the doors, then you get out the drivers door and pull out the mechanical key out of the key fob you can manually lock the driver door. I really hope they address this so the fob can lock the car but this is definitely a workaround. This is my dog mode for our IONIQ 5.👍🏼 These software settings are for the most part, set and forget. Let me offer an example. When have you gone in and turned on a beep. 😁🎯 That said I agree the navigation isn’t the best and should let you arrive at what ever percentage you want to. I still use it to precondition but if that isn’t needed it’s screen mirroring of your favorite nav app. I hope the manual precondition comes to all Hyundai/Kia’s so you can do this without the connection service or while using those app nav’s. Fort Collins Kia has quite the offer. 💯 49:18
Great video. One thing after watching 10+ EV9 review videos is NO ONE is showing the Land AWD middle row bench seat. Everyone is reviewing the GT or premium with bucket seats for the second row. They are nice but in Canada to get bucket seats its a TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR upgrade for premiums or FOURTEEN THOUSAND bucks for GT upgrade. We are looking at the Land AWD with no package as a result for the 5000lb towing we need for short distances. Once you drop the AWD its 2000lbs towing. I would have liked to see the middle bench seat in a video. Thanks guys!
I totally agree with you! I want to order the standard AWD but can't find any videos of it. Not going to pay the 10 or 14k$ increase for the added stuff. Would love the HUD and all the added safety info you get but not for that price.
Thank you for this report! What a great station. I just drove from Shelton, WA to Southern California on the Tesla network. The Pasadena station had two chargers down that I tried. I found one down in Sutherlin, OR. Tesla is not perfect by any means but pretty darn good!
If you live in places with lots of tunnels, then that auto change to internal circulation is very convenient. Not everyone lives out in rural America, where you have such wide open spaces with little traffic or tunnels.
How come the EV9 is not pitted against the Rivian R1S as much? Aren’t they the more direct competition in the 3-row e-suv space in terms of size and looks more than the Tesla X?
You're spot on! The EV9 and Rivian R1S do share a lot in common, making them more direct competitors in the 3-row e-SUV space than the Tesla Model X. It's interesting how the focus often leans towards Tesla, but as the EV market grows, we'll likely see more head-to-head comparisons between these two. Both offer great size, looks, and performance, giving consumers some exciting choices in the electric SUV market
Hello. Ev9 GT owner here. I agree with prettty much entire review except for one point. I’m 40 and drove ICE cars all my life, my transition to this EV was pretty much like any other car. So I disagree with your point about Teslas being “easier” and “don’t have to think about it”. In my opinion, transitioning to car without a start button, without a drivers display (all center screen), without any tactile buttons and having to do everything on the screen. That’s way more stressful and more difficult for people that are used to driving non teslas. I would hate it to mess with the center for everything. So I disagree with what u said about you won’t recommend it to new EV drivers because it’s a bigger learning curve and because the Navi doesn’t take u to the right charger on your long trips. In my opinion, this is a natural transition. Way Easier than it would be to transition to a Tesla. I bought it because it’s a great car that happened to be an EV. But otherwise, great review. The stupid orange light I couldn’t find out what it was for until I watched your previous review on the ev9. What a stupid light, eh?😅
Kia are bullet proof almost 100K KM on my Canadian 2020 Soul EV limited (about 60K KM of road tripping), only issue was the cheap 12volt battery, replaced with with good AGM never looked back!
I saw literature that this car with the right bidrectional charge can do vehicle to home charging. No videos talk about it though. Can this car do V2H?
33:26 So will this ever be able to charge at over 90kw at v3 superchargers, even after the dedicated adapter or nacs plug? Or will this always be an issue due to the architecture? This may be a deal breaker in my region.
13:40 - I just tested one of these yesterday and I loved the start button. I want my car to be either on, or off, not always-on-whenever-I'm-near-it. I'm planning on using this for overlanding (within the terrain capabilities of the thing) and having it properly shut off when I want it off is great so I know it won't be randomly draining battery for some function I don't need while sleeping either in it or on it with a roof top tent.
The batteries lifespan doesn't lessen if you bring it to 0% once and a while. Most EV's drivers never bring it anywhere close to 0%. I agree with Kyle. 0% should actually mean 0%.
@6:33 wow completed 180 here. Now dealerships can't sell these cars and are giving away thousands of dollars extra on top of the Kia $7500 rebate. I got mine for $7100 + the Kia $7500 + $500 loyalty discount. $75k MSRP went down to $65k out the door.
If you set DC maximum charging percentage( 80%, 90%,), It will be applied the route planer. So, It is a customize. Do not confuse. It is DC maximum charging percentage. It is not DC maximum charging rate.
41:18 - There's a workaround that folks have figured out to have Utility Mode serve more like a Dog Mode with locked doors. It works on the Ioniq 5, so I'd assume it works here. And I'll preface this: it's not great! I wish they had a real Dog Mode. But, when you are leaving the car in Utility Mode, roll down your window and exit the car. Stick your hand in the open window and lock it. Hit the window up button to close the window. Now, your car is in Utility Mode and locked! To unlock the car, you need to either use the physical key from inside the fob or the Bluetooth connection from your phone. Again, none of this is ideal. Hyundai/Kia/Gensis SHOULD have a Dog Mode. But this method works ok.
@@jhoesing Yes there is. It's not within the key fob itself, but it is a separate small key that comes with the car. There are quite a few videos you can find here on TH-cam, or you can find it on page 170 of the EV9 owner's manual (section 5-6).
@@CallMeIvan516 now reading your post a second time I realize you’re not doing the exact same I have done. I open the window, get out of the car with the key, lock the car, stick my arm in and close the window. love your Channel and how you educate people about electric vehicles but one thing I never see is there's not enough handicap parking for people like me in the wheelchair that can charge Vehicles without hitting the car that's next to us either with our chair or doors we need to get more handicap space so we can charge our cars independently
Thats great news about the EV9 phone key--- because of the KIA/hyundai 12v battery challenges--- will the phone key drain the 12V battery even more? Ive watched other reviewers choose to turn off the phone key to reduce drain of the 12v. Also the fingerprint sensor. Or is this something that is now an non-issue since the EV9 now has an EAGM battery? Thanks!
Obviously you can use Google maps or Way's navigation instead of the native NAV for route planning. But you never mention if you can get a EV charging route planning from an external NAV product through and Apple or Android connection. It would be nice if you could. Can you address this sometime and if this hasn't been integrated into a phone based NAV system why hasn't it?
I would love to see the higher trim with the larger towing capacity towing a holiday trailer.. I would like to know if I just need to divide the range by 2 or if it is much worse with all that drag.
I would be a fan of manual battery pre-conditioning for my EV6. The Kia navigation software is still missing so many charging sites. I end up wasting tons of time trying to find a site I know EXISTS but cannot find on the app. Until Kia reliably lists fast charging locations, I would love the ability to manually start battery pre-conditioning 20 or 30 minutes from where I know I will find a fast charger. I drive to Québec in the winter and cold batteries are the worst when it comes to cahrging. It's my choice to take the power penalty or not if I misjudge how long it takes to warm up the battery.
Regular listener. Thank you for the reviews and great breakdown on the EV-9. I'm one for maximizing efficiency so I still gravitate toward Model Y/Aptera. I appreciate the point made about the plastic wrap on the EV-9 when it's delivered. Along those lines, what are your thoughts on wrapping cars? My understanding is that these wraps only last for 5-7 years and then all the plastic is pulled off and.... thrown away? Also seems concerning from the sustainability perspective. You guys noticed an indicator light for the main battery charging the 12V. The location of the light looks like it would be visible when the hood is up and a technician may be working on the 12V. If I were a tech working on the electrical system I'd appreciate having an easy reference, in the indicator light, for whether the main battery was sending power to the 12V. Just a possibility.
What is the MAX power this take on Tesla SuperCharger? I am planning to trade in my MY as the WIND trim came in but still on the fence if this cripple like their Ev6
I like this channel, lots of nerdy info. Just bought a Model y, I think our next car will be an EV9, we came from q full size range rover vogue so want size, but in an EV.
Charging question: if the voltage of the "big battery" ev9 sits closer to 400v, does that mean it will charge better on the supercharger network(when available) than a comparable ev6, Ioniq 5, etc. If I am remembering my physics correctly, higher voltage requires higher Amps which is why the 800v systems don't charge as well on Supercharger.
You mentioned the 12V battery and the ICCU problems - I purchased my EV9 a couple of weeks ago and feel like those issues are looming in the future. Maybe you could do a video explaining the problems, if they have been fixed, or when they might be?
Midwest and East Coast are seeing up to $4,000 off MSRP, plus incentives. Don't pay more than you have to - these are not in high demand outside of the West coast.
Love you channel and your content, but I wish I could sit down with you and show you how the Hyundai KIA navigation works. It absolutely populates the charger and will add and remove them in real time if your efficiency changes. It will show you your SOC on arrival and it will tell you how long you need to charge. If you come to Seattle look me up, or if you contact me through you tube I’ll tell you where to see how it works.
I have never heard anyone address how well the air conditioning works in extreme heat like Phoenix or Vegas. I understand that range will be adversely affected, but will the HVAC actually keep you cool?
Anyone know about driver seat/side view mirror memory function? Kia's site says that's only available in Land/GT trims, which seems crazy for what's considered a family car.
Boost is $900 one time, Lighting Patterns is $250 one time, parking assist is $20/mo. Boost and park assist are included in GT, so factor that into the price difference between Land and GT if you plan to unlock those.
As an owner now, I agree the software is the weak link. The Infotainment UI is very poor. As noted it's feature rich on paper, but just poorly executed. The user profile settings can't tie to either the key fob or the digital keys, so the car doesn't recognize you and you have to wait for very slow loading screens to change and confirm your profile on the screen. And the Media screens are comically bad. Like most newer cars, you can save all your preferred channels across SiriusXM and FM, etc. to Favorites to just browse your go-to channels. But unlike every other car, the EV9 forgets to return to Favorites mode every time you turn on the car. So if you're last channel listened to when you turned off the car happened to be an XM channel, it will start-up in the every channel XM mode instead of favorites and it takes several screen taps to switch it back to Favorites at start-up. And forget wanting to know the name of the song or band you're listening too unless you want to drill three screens down and then have it scroll across a tiny corner of the screen furtherest from the driver while the majority of the screen is literally unused. Whoever designed this UI almost had to go out of their way to make bad choices -- like they had a contest to see who could make the worst user interactions and went with them.
Fun fact 42:28 , we don’t have the orange light knob on the dash in Europe. So maybe it’s a US regulatory thing? (It’s for safety. But strange that no other EV has it then…)
I drove the EV9 the other day, and for me the cockpit functions are super important. Unfortunately the irritating Touchnetix smart surface buttons ( home, map, search, media etc.) on the dashboard controls was a dealbreaker for me. I mean, that´s where your fingers are and those hit and miss pushes was a big no. Anyone else experienced this?Or was it only this particular car that had problems?
Honestly can’t believe Kia/Hyundai are still putting out vehicles with 12v / ICCU issues. If their OTA update is the same on the EV9 as the Ioniq/EV6 fix then it doesn’t necessarily fix the problem either.
We honestly LOVE our ev9 with two exceptions. You guys touched on it, but the door handles are SO annoying!! Especially when then family is getting in and out of the car often, the logic of only one handle popping out sometimes is frustrating. Secondly, and this is more a minor annoyance, but the transition to cruise control is choppy and uncomfortable. You have to fully let off the pedal before cruise control engages and the lag between letting off and it actually capturing the speed causes a small but annoying jolt in acceleration. Otherwise it's honestly a great family hauler for us.
Why is this lane centering without cruise such a thing for these guys? My 2018 CRV does this. Two Toyota rentals in the last year did this… Is this not normal?
With the steering wheel blocking visibility of the driver display screen, that's one thing I dislike about the Tesla Model S and X if the round wheel is installed. I guess if you can put up with the yoke, then that screen is not blocked but I haven't tried a yoke car so meh! The Model Y and 3 have much more visibility of the single screen in the center. I do wish Tesla would add rotation of the screen, even just manual. I can grab the edge and yank it around before driving especially if I'm by myself in the car.
@34:07 in terms if Tesla naively supporting high-voltage vehicles this is literally what v4 is. Its not something they need to do because they already are working on it.
40:40. No, sadly there is no other AC plug other than in the rear of the vehicle. Even on the GT-Line trim. Crazy exclusion. If you want to power a laptop from the front passenger seat, you'd need an extension cord.
Possible dealbreaker. Midway through the video we were about ready to buy one - until you said that it won't work on the Tesla Superchargers!!! Is that the final word on that? Any chance of fixing that problem with a software update? Did Kia respond to this problem??
Love your reviews. I test drove an ev9 2 months ago. It is still on the lot and hasn't been sold. Issues I have with the ev9: 1. No 2nd row bench seat in the two lowest trims. Why own something this big that can only fit six. 2. No heat pump in the two lowest trims. 3. Turning radius. Get used to doing k turns. 4. Resale value. It will loose 60% with just 30,000 miles on it. And if new battery tech comes out, it will loose even more. I wonder if the Hyundai Ioniq 7 will be more efficient because it has a more aerodynamic shape?
14:00 couldn’t agree more. CarPlay is just annoying, I have my phone on a mount 6 inches from the screen I want to see the cars display on the infotainment screen.
Supposedly, ordering a Euro V2L gives you 240v. I have the NA one at 120v but would love a 240v one. I just never saw a confirmation it actually works to order a second V2L.
One explenation for the low voltage is that to get room for the capacity they had to choose larger cells that gave better power density. And if the cells in percent is larger than the difference in cell package there is room for less cells. And therfor less cells in serial and lower voltage. I belive this is one of the cons against 800 volt since it limits which cells to use. (if we belive larger is better)

Wait, does this really have air susp in the US? Here in Sweden there is no such thing.
For the value, this is hands down the best for the buck 3rd row SUV. Not even close. The lane centering and cruise control on highway from Kia/hyundai is amazing
The tesla phone app issues were only happening years ago, if you are still having tesla phone app issues, then its either your device or device settings.
Could you explain to everyone that “zero regen” isn’t zero regen. It just means no “engine braking”, you still get exactly the same regen for a given deceleration, it’s just commanded at the brake pedal. Coasting is actually the most efficient way to drive…
Am I in the minority for wanting a start stop button? Why can't they just give us a button but have a setting to not need it with the phone key? Then we can all be happy, because I'll never use the phone key and will always want the button. People who don't want to use the button can choose that setting and be good to go too.
I think you’re in the minority in wanting a dedicated button but a way to put the car in different states would be nice (off, camp, dog, veg out mode, etc)

Nice video as usual. Could we get a family to review this car since that is the attended audience on this one? I could see some issues for families that haven't been talked about
stellar microphones reducing the heavy wind noise!
I really wish my ioniq 5 had the software/computer of the ev9. Sick of going to the dealer for updates
2025 IONIQ 5 will be refreshed with a rear wiper and ccNc, the software platform from EV9 and 2024 Kona.
My car updates from home. Yes, it's game changing.
You don't have to go to the dealer for updates. You can download the update file on a USB stick and apply it yourself.
@OutofSpecReviews Good Review. 16:52 The Kia Telluride and the Hyundai Palisade both have heated and ventilated 2nd row available since they launched
This has the middle bench th-cam.com/video/iB8KSfNhcKo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qO_1Mub7LpWo5iLM
you definitely are the gold standard in EV reviews
Wish higher trims had 7 seats. Would have bought it instantly.
Very upsetting manufacturers are going with six seater in most cases for highest trim.
In Sweden you can choose between 6 or 7 seven seats on GT-Line so that’s Kia USA making a bad decision.
Wow.
@@lasseisvinge7445That’s why Sweden has happier people ❤❤❤
The VTG will support 220/ 240volt, the VTL adapter you have is just a 15amp 120VAC. Maybe aftermarket might fill this need?
Thanks!
Kia are bullet proof almost 100K KM on my Canadian 2020 Soul EV limited (about 60K KM of road tripping), only issue was the cheap 12volt battery, replaced with with good AGM never looked back!
Kyle should call reviews like this 'The good, the bad and the ugly."
2:40 isn't the buffer to keep you from fully draining the battery, which actually lessens its lifespan?
The batteries lifespan doesn't lessen if you bring it to 0% once and a while. Most EV's drivers never bring it anywhere close to 0%. I agree with Kyle. 0% should actually mean 0%.
@6:33 wow completed 180 here. Now dealerships can't sell these cars and are giving away thousands of dollars extra on top of the Kia $7500 rebate. I got mine for $7100 + the Kia $7500 + $500 loyalty discount. $75k MSRP went down to $65k out the door.
Same, just picked up a Land on lease with 73k MSRP. $7500 rebate, $700 Extra Rebate, $1500 Extra Rebate, $5.5k dealer discount.
Just leased one at 0% interest from 61k down to 43k made my lease 250$
You mean otr with taxes and fees included?
One thing you missed about digging through settings is the search button on the top left. It works REALLY well.
If you set DC maximum charging percentage( 80%, 90%,), It will be applied the route planer.
So, It is a customize.
Do not confuse. It is DC maximum charging percentage. It is not DC maximum charging rate.
Great review. Thanks for the info 👍
Yes I can confirm it works on the EV6 too.
No physical key on the EV9.
@@jhoesing Yes there is. It's not within the key fob itself, but it is a separate small key that comes with the car. There are quite a few videos you can find here on TH-cam, or you can find it on page 170 of the EV9 owner's manual (section 5-6).
Mine definitely only came with 2 fobs and no mechanical key. Looks like I need to go asking for my physical keys…
@@CallMeIvan516 now reading your post a second time I realize you’re not doing the exact same I have done. I open the window, get out of the car with the key, lock the car, stick my arm in and close the window. When I come back I can open the door the regular way, no need to get the physical key out of the fob. Mine is an EV6 so it could be different but I doubt it.
love your Channel and how you educate people about electric vehicles but one thing I never see is there's not enough handicap parking for people like me in the wheelchair that can charge Vehicles without hitting the car that's next to us either with our chair or doors we need to get more handicap space so we can charge our cars independently
Love that you’re testing the usb-c ports. Was very curious about that!
Thanks!
At around 3:02, Kyle mentions that the EV9 is the largest 3-row electric SUV on the market. Does that include the Rivian R1S? 🤔
ABRP app on your phone (instead of Apple Maps or Google Maps or Waze (with it’s shitty cartoonish interface) solves that problem.
Will the small battery version fare any differently at V3 superchargers, or will it be the same as its big-battery brethren?
Can it get an OTA update to be able to use the cameras as a Tesla-like security system?
What about this versus a used 100D model X for about 30K?
Midwest and East Coast are seeing up to $4,000 off MSRP, plus incentives. Don't pay more than you have to - these are not in high demand outside of the West coast.
Is the Tesla Supercharger 86kw limit a software fixable issue because that seems like a big deal for charging infrastructure.
Why is it stupid to have a start button? Trying to understand this statement on 13:42
Love you channel and your content, but I
wish I could sit down with you and show you how the Hyundai KIA navigation works. It absolutely populates the charger and will add and remove them in real time if your efficiency changes. It will show you your SOC on arrival and it will tell you how long you need to charge. If you come to Seattle look me up, or if you contact me through you tube I’ll tell you where to see how it works.
Hey Kyle where is the 0-100% charge recording?
How do I get heated seat to come on when I remote start right now I have to turn it on.
The Nissan Leaf also indicates when the main battery is charging the 12-volt battery.
Who uses built in nav on ANY car when there’s up-to-date-to-today Apple or Android maps?
Because built-in nav on EVs know the SOC of the battery and real-time range estimates that no phone app would have the details of.
So if it's not ev9 which one is your favorite
I have never heard anyone address how well the air conditioning works in extreme heat like Phoenix or Vegas. I understand that range will be adversely affected, but will the HVAC actually keep you cool?
How is the road noise at 70mph?
What is a porshA?
Anyone know about driver seat/side view mirror memory function? Kia's site says that's only available in Land/GT trims, which seems crazy for what's considered a family car.
Yes not for peasants!
Just out of curiosity....how much are some of the premium services? Park Assist, Boost, Lighting Patterns.
Boost is $900 one time, Lighting Patterns is $250 one time, parking assist is $20/mo. Boost and park assist are included in GT, so factor that into the price difference between Land and GT if you plan to unlock those.
Where does Tesla give you the 3 levels of HVAC Auto? Not on my MX 2018
31:15 is there any way to check if i got the OTA update?
Ariya does the light to let you know the same way for the 12v battey charging
I’m also a CarPlay lover/hater. I love that my EV6 only has wired CarPlay. Wireless on my last car was infuriating.
Why is this lane centering without cruise such a thing for these guys?
My 2018 CRV does this. Two Toyota rentals in the last year did this…
Is this not normal?
9:30 Kia is using UWB from your phone to unlock the door now. I'm sure this is the same with what you were saying with the Tesla V4 hardware.
Noooo! Don't take away my start button!
The start button is pointless. I walk up to the car, it unlocks itself because it detects my phone. I get in the car, put it in drive and go.
What’s wrong with a start button?
Do the cameras also record like a Tesla?
hopefully you will get your hands on a 2024 id4 (Chattanooga) for review. Waiting for our delivery here in Canada
Great job with your reviews
Possible dealbreaker. Midway through the video we were about ready to buy one - until you said that it won't work on the Tesla Superchargers!!! Is that the final word on that? Any chance of fixing that problem with a software update? Did Kia respond to this problem??
It will in the 4th quarter 2024
literally took delivery of mine today
So not figuratively? 🙄
Love your reviews.
I test drove an ev9 2 months ago. It is still on the lot and hasn't been sold.
Issues I have with the ev9:
Pallisade Calligraphy has heated seats for all 3 rows and cooled for the first two.
It’s not split phase though…it’s not the 240v you think it is.
No more channels, I try to search for some of your content and have to search through too many places.
For the value, this is hands down the best for the buck 3rd row SUV. Not even close. The lane centering and cruise control on highway from Kia/hyundai is amazing
It’s not a SUV. It’s a boxy looking minivan van with normal doors.
Think that light in the dash, 12V charging, is a good thing in general, … you might notice there‘s something comin up maybe with LV battery and check

The tesla phone app issues were only happening years ago, if you are still having tesla phone app issues, then its either your device or device settings.
I was gonna say the same. Literally never have an issue with key working in my phone in 4 different Teslas
Could you explain to everyone that “zero regen” isn’t zero regen. It just means no “engine braking”, you still get exactly the same regen for a given deceleration, it’s just commanded at the brake pedal. Coasting is actually the most efficient way to drive…
I can’t get phone audio in my Tesla unless i connect it to the entertainment center.
Am I in the minority for wanting a start stop button? Why can't they just give us a button but have a setting to not need it with the phone key? Then we can all be happy, because I'll never use the phone key and will always want the button. People who don't want to use the button can choose that setting and be good to go too.
i wont buy an ev with a start button why would you want a key fob?
Get an ID.4! It has a start/stop button, but you never need to use it!
I think you’re in the minority in wanting a dedicated button but a way to put the car in different states would be nice (off, camp, dog, veg out mode, etc)
Same to me. I like to have a start button. My BYD Dolphin has one…
