Exactly. Imagine cramming ~8 games worth of complicated plotlines into a 36 minute video. No shit you're going to come out of it confused.
Coney literally cried at the end of the ONLY KH game he's played. Imagine that, actually playing the game start to finish gets you emotionally invested and you understand the plot as such.
It's not just about being complicated or being crammed by the video, it has tons of contradictions every step of the way. It's hard to understand the story's world when the rules and laws told by the story don't seem to matter at all and every single one of them has some sort of exception. As much as the games are fun and invest the player emotionally, the plot in itself is a nightmare.
@@hunogo the problem with kingdom hearts' story is more or less the world building, if you go back and play every game after playing the whole series they make sense but only because you understand the fundemental rules of the universe. If they had just explained what was possible in the first 2 games (heartless, nobodies, replicas,unversed, dream eaters, datascapes, dream worlds ect.) They wouldnt feel like ass pulls happening as the games progress.
The issue was always with establishing the rules of the Kh universe and not so much with the story. If you watch their reactions its typically more like "why is this person here, they can do that, ok a digital world" the story in and of its self is pretty basic the problem is it feels convoluded because we dont understand why something happened hell we dont even know what the fuck kingdom hearts does or is. It kinda just feels like the chaos emeralds in sonic where they just do whatever the game needs them to do.

@@gigastrike2 Spoilers for 358/Days, obv: roxas and xion dont have any memories of their past unlike any other Org XIII member. They dont remember what it felt like to have a heart, what emotions or what friends are neither. Axel gave them sea salt ice cream, told them they're friends. Since nobodies do in fact have hearts, but "rebuild" them from ground up, they found joy at revisiting the clock tower and eating ice cream with their friends. Eating ice cream together became the meaning of "friendship" for them. Its both sweet but also salty, two completley opposite tastes, just like friendships can give you the happiest and the most depressing times. Pretty much what happens in the game, one day Xion starts to doubt her identity, walks off and her friendship with Roxas and Axel is what brought upon her doom. Also the reason why Roxas says "Who else am I gonna eat ice cream with" when xion dies is cause he inteprets sea salt ice cream as friendship which many ppl dont rly understand since they just watch the movie version which is made up of only the plot relevant cutscenes and not the character developing cutscenes lol. Kingdom Hearts in general is just a big symbolic story

@AT Productions Not only that but I didn't grow up with Disney whatsoever and still love the KH games so much. They do a good job of weaving the story between Disney worlds and real KH lore.
If you're really THAT opposed to Disney, just go play Final Fantasy, you'll get what you're looking for. 13 is a great example.

To be honest, as someone who gets most of the KH lore, that video did a poor job of explaining anything. It's only useful if you already have context for things because it's just telling you names and events but doesn't really explain why anything is the way that it is. It also tries to explain the story chronologically, which is not how people who played the games learned things, so again you have no context for what things are or why things matter.
If you want to make someone a KH fan, you do not show them a super condensed lore video of 10 games in 40 minutes. You show them the opening cinematics because hype is what gets you on board to actually have the patience for all the shenanigans that come in the game.
Y'know what, you right. I'll give you that.

I've been saying this for years, all you need to do to hook someone on Kingdom Hearts is tell them that Donald is in the game and he gives his opinion on other Disney franchises. Also showing them that Simple and Clean intro video is good idea.
Kind TH-camr, I politely ask that you consider making a video to summarize it. I've been looking at a lot of videos about the summary of KH and I fail to understand it because of how convoluted/wild it is. This is my first exposure to KH lore, but it’s everything I feared it would be.
To be fair, the story was almost followable from KH1 to KH2, and then everything after KH2 just went into pure nonsense-town

@@Roseknight888 you guys are really overthinking it. especially from kh1 to kh2 the story was very easily followable the only kind of confusing thing was roxas. days and bbs after that do complicate things but you can understand them easily by not overthinking and handling them as them as their own thing at first. i cant really defend DDD though but kh3 did simplify things again even though it has some contrived explanations

I've ascended. Not only does all of this make perfect sense to me, it all sounds 100% natural. I can never go back to the place where I can understand why Mickey and Jimmy Cricket's sudden appearances are jarring; to me they are just suppose to be there.
Kingdom Hearts' story is a ton easier to understand from playing the actual games. Summary videos dont work as well because there's too many names and vocabulary words so anyone who hasnt played or kept up will just be overwhelmed.
Btw Coney, Maleficent and Pete were temporarily with Sora just to get rid of the Organization. Enemy of my enemy is my friend stuff
Fr, it's almost like people just need to give the franchise a chance and they might actually enjoy it. Coney openly admits to having played the first game and crying at the end. Like that's just one game dude, play the franchise and maybe you'll actually understand the plot and become as emotionally invested in the franchise as a whole as you were the first game.

The "heart" is basically Somebody's soul (Yes, someone whole is called a Somebody), and Roxas (Sora's Nobody) takes on the appearance of Ventus because of the events of Birth by Sleep and Ventus losing his heart and finding refuge in Sora when he was about to be born. Honestly, while the KH story is dumb, it's really not all that hard to follow, but its biggest problem is that its a convoluted mess and they just made more KH games to explain plot points rather than just explain them, which KH3 has mostly wrapped up at this point.
Coney and I have the same opinion in the EXACT opposite directions I love how stupid this story is. Why is Mickey there??? who cares he has insanely funny lines.

So, just wanted to answer some of the questions despite no one probably caring:
1. In the end of kingdom hearts 2 in the world that never was, Pete and maleficient kind of joined with Sora to try to defeat Organization XIII kind of because the organization was a massive threat overall(I don’t think this was ever explained too well but that’s kinda what I got from it)
2. Xion looks like different people based on relationship because(and this is a little complicated), she’s kind of like a living vacuum cleaner of Sora’s memories that sucking them up from him while he is recovering his memories in castle oblivion and because of that(and the fact that she is a clone of Roxas who is also absorbing some of Sora’s memories), she starts to look like Sora. The video didn’t explain it properly with Xion’s appearance. Basically, the more memories she absorbs from Sora, the more distinctive her appearance becomes and she eventually appears to look like Sora.
3. In the end of Kingdom Hearts 1, Riku was not a heartless. He instead was possessed by Ansem, The Seeker of Darkness(Ansem 1 in this case). It’s because in the beginning of the game, Riku kind of exposed himself to Ansem SoD when the door to darkness was opened. This caused him to be sort of corrupted by Ansem SoD and the darkness rather than losing his heart to it, which instead would have caused the creation of a heartless and nobody for Riku.
4. I just wanna point out that that video skipped a ton of story. Most of Chi and UX were skipped, and it didn’t have anything on dark road or kingdom hearts 3, so there is still a lot more lore. It’s much easier to understand by playing the games rather than watching a relatively short video(you could often spend that long talking about the plot of one major game).
5. Roxas and Ventus are not the same person. They look the same in appearance due to ventus(when his heart was shattered by Xehanort) becoming a part of Sora’s heart and vice versa and then Roxas(Sora’s nobody) taking the appearance of the Ventus part of Sora’s heart rather than the appearance of Sora.
6. It was thought in the video that Xigbar and other org XIII members were dead and you all were surprised to see them in kingdom hearts dream drop distance. This is because, yes, all of organization XIII were killed in kingdom hearts 2 and Re:CoM, but when a person’s nobody and heartless are killed, that person is resurrected. Since all the members of the original org 13 were nobodies and their heartleases had been killed, they voluntarily became nobodies again to join the real org 13(which is primarily detailed in kingdom hearts 3 which the video didn’t cover).
TLDR: I am way too much of a kingdom hearts nerd and these are some answers to some of the questions and I am happy to answer any more as someone who (I think) knows the story pretty well and absolutely loves it

I always enjoy Barry Kramer's "A Good Enough Summary of Kingdom Hearts" since it has the same level of "I don't get it" that most of us feel and having some fun art to go with it.
also that has the games by release order, and none of the union cross stuff, so it’s far easier to follow

The best part of panda is that, beyond the gameplay, they have the very best in personalities and can do videos such as these and still captivate all the same viewers here for their innate talent in their field. I do not care for Kingdom Hearts personally, but this reaction is top notch

To be fair, this is not the best way to digest the lore of Kingdom Hearts, many fans, including myself progressed through the story over the course of hundreds of gameplay hours. The video you guys watched is what, around 30 minutes long? It's trying to condense the lore of around 10 games, and around a couple dozen characters, in that time frame in chronological order.
I get that Kingdom Hearts is confusing, but being exposed to this much material in one sitting isn't helping anyone here lol

I've been with this series since KH1, beaten every game, have literally watched multiple 40+ minute videos on the lore and I barely understand it. God, I love this series.
The series likes the focus on its gameplay than its own story lore.
I can pretty much summarize KH with one quote.

Trying to explain the appeal of Kingdom Hearts to a newcomer by summarizing its story is a recipe to ensure that they'll never want to touch it again.
What newcomers need to understand about Kingdom Hearts is that the Disney stuff makes up a vast majority of the games, but it usually has very little bearing on the overarching story. This complicated lore stuff typically bookends the games at the start and end then are relegated mostly to interstitial scenes between levels. Mostly everything in between is entirely visiting Disney properties and playing along with their stories like most sane people would want to do.
After that, the rest of the appeal is in its combat, which seems and feels simple but can get incredibly deep to almost fighting game levels of precision at its hardest points.
EDIT: For any newcomers that get to the bottom of this and are curious, just trust me, ignore this video, and try the original Kingdom Hearts. Don't even worry about trying the rest of the franchise afterwards. Just try the first one. You'll see exactly what I mean and you might even have some fun. :)
What I don't get, though, is how people can enjoy the Disney stuff and the combat and then somehow have the awful, nonsensical story NOT make them like the game less as a result.
Like, I barely just beat Scarlet Nexus after putting 25 hours into it over the course of 4 months, and it was PAINFUL. I love the music, the visuals, and the gameplay, but the story is so abysmal that I now hate the game and wish I had gotten it on sale. I will never recommend anyone buy this game because the entire experience is brought down so much by the god awful story that makes you just not care about anything you're doing. It would really surprise me, then, if there was a cult following that rose up around this game just because "it's fun to play."
Every Kingdom Hearts fan I've ever met knows all the "deep lore" and clearly are into that side of it, and that's why I don't trust comments like this. Like you're making it sound like all the gobbledygook doesn't really matter, but the people crying over Sora getting into smash sure seem to think that shit matters a lot, and it's why I can't take them seriously. I think people SHOULD be told about all this stuff up front so that they know what they're getting into. If I hadn't known any of this stuff years ago, I might have been tempted to actually play these games, and holy shit would I have been in for a rude awakening. I only play 1 JRPG at a time, and I hate not finishing ones that I start, so if I started Kingdom Hearts, I would have to actually finish it, and just like Scarlet Nexus, I would regret the time I spent.
So I for one am glad this stuff is all out in the open so I can avoid it like the plague.

@@Tohlemiach I completely understand your perspective, but I think this is a situation where both the general population (and the diehard fans) get way too caught up in the franchise as a whole to be able to cherry pick the genuinely good, crowd pleasing stuff within it to help ease newcomers.
Think of it like Star Wars. The original movie (Episode 4) is a nice, good, simple action blockbuster. Even though the surrounding lore and universe have completely overtaken that fandom, you can still watch that movie, and even The Empire Strikes Back, and have a good, simple time without being swamped in all that extra stuff.
That's the first Kingdom Hearts game. It was a simple story about a kid who visited Disney propeties with Donald and Goofy with some basic overarching narrative about friendship and light vs darkness to tie everything together. Practically all of the convoluted trash in this video is stuff that was introduced in later games in the series. While that stuff does make the franchise hard to introduce people to, I can still recommend the original Kingdom Hearts to people simply because it is a fun game devoid of the rest of the series.
Look, I know that people will either love or hate Kingdom Hearts, but if you were to try the first game out I think it would at least make sense to you why people initially fell in love with the series to begin with.
To compare to another massively overcomplicated franchise, I would not say that the lore of the Metal Gear Solid franchise makes me unable to recommend Metal Gear Solid 1 or 2 to someone. I feel the same way about Kingdom Hearts.
Pete and Malificent are basically like the anti-heros, they just do whatever they want. In the current story they are searching for “the black box” which was a mysterious box given to Luxu by the master of masters. (No we don’t know what’s in the box)
They are still kinda villainous, they just helped the good guys because the Organization XIII was more efficient at doing bad stuff and Maleficent and Pete wanted no competition.

im happy sora is here just because everyone else seems so excited. the fact so many people cried tears of joy seeing him shows how important he is, and that's what i think smash should be. sora perfectly resembles what the roster is like.
True even though the of KH story is hot shit, the gameplay is great which keeps it from being a bad series. Especially the fact they chose KH 1 Sora which is the staple character of the whole series.

The thing about Kingdom Hearts is that the story makes sense if you experience it through the games. It's batshit crazy but it makes sense, because the games introduce concepts naturally that you just come to accept. You accept the light and darkness stuff, you accept the heart stuff, because in the moment it makes some level of sense. Trying to explain it without the foundations of things you just have to accept about the universe is doomed to failure. Barry Kramer's video STARTS with like 7 things you just have to understand about how the universe works and it explains things SO MUCH BETTER because of that cause you have these terms established first.

to be fair I get why people see kingdom hearts as a jumbled mess in its story telling (Union X was a big hassle to understand truth be told) but at the same time, I'm pretty sure watching a lore dump of an entire series would turn anyone away, I personally love Kingdom hearts story and all its twists and turns, heck theres a handful of moments that have made me cry alongside how almost every ending is usually bittersweet, but the only reason why I love it was because I played through each game on my own and got to experience the story slowly rather than having to find out 20 names all at ones.
Also just so people know, this lore dump doesn't only explain kingdom hearts 1 and 2 lore, it explains the series lore which includes the Non-numbered games (Kingdom hearts Chain of memories, Union X, Dream drop distance and so on.) which are all canon, so they essentially had to listen to around 7-8 games worth of lore in one video.
So yeah I get that kingdom heart's story is a turn off to those who don't want to sink time into playing the handful of games, I love it, personally believe that its an amazing story that's just extremely difficult to follow (Because by chronological order you'd have to play Union X then KH1 then KH chain of memories then KH 2 so on) and I don't mind others hating on it.

You missed BBS between Union X and KH1 but I would suggest playing the gams in release order, not chorological order, if it's your first time. Games will spoil other games. But I completely agree with you on the matter that the story looks like a mess from the outside. If you don't have the time to let things sink in over the course of playing the game or watching a LP/Livestream of it, then it won't stick and you'll be left asking more questions than you started. A lore dump like this doesn't work as a learning tool, only a refresher for those that already understand it. I just think too many people write it off as a convoluted mess that never makes sense, but that's just not true. Not that people aren't justified in avoiding the series because of it being a daunting prospect. And yes, there are a lot of emotionally charged scenes in the franchise. KH1 ending, BBS ending, Days ending, just to name the most prominent ones. Kingdom Hearts is one of the few franchises to make me shed tears more than once, and continue to do so on repeated playthroughs. Kingdom Hearts as a concept is a fever dream so why wouldn't the product be a fever dream, too?

As a big fan of series, I have to say these are all appropriate reactions to the plot of Kingdom Hearts. To actually understand this, you gotta do your own research or watch many different videos of other people’s research.

The thing about Kingdom Hearts is you play the games from the perspective of someone thrown into something they know nothing about and while everything does get explained to where it’s understandable a lot is intentionally left vague and unanswered only to show up years later. An example is the time machine in KH1. We didn’t know what it was back then until Union X.
