- I have hit 10,000 subscribers on TH-cam and I am ever so grateful to those of you who tune in.
This vide is a little different, i thought id give a bit of my background story for those interested, aswell as a Q&A and my reasons behind my model railways theme of the London Underground.
I also picked a few bits up from Warley, so show those at the end.
If you enjoy the vid, please let me know. Open to ideas on what i can do to improve the videos also.

Hi Eric, my name is Simon. I only found your channel a few weeks ago (random TH-cam recommendation) and I have watched quite a few of your videos since then and I thoroughly enjoy your content, you have a knack for it. I haven’t commented until today because I’ve forgotten to be honest.😇😅 All thumbed up, though.👍🏻 Anyway, this one made me comment. You’ve obviously had a tough time in the past which I wish wasn’t the case for you. You seem like a good bloke and if anyone deserves happiness and success, it’s you. My late father used to say “sometimes it’s five steps back to go one step forward, but the key is to keep moving forward“. Words I do my damnedest to live by everyday. I have the feeling that you probably do the same. Those past are always in our hearts, they’re never truly gone if we keep them alive through memories and deeds.🙂👍🏻
Moving on. I’m a railwayman, I work on the dark-side, ie, I’m a signalman, sorry, signaller (haha) and have been since January ’92. I started on a YTS scheme in Leeds in ‘84 and that led me down to Woking, Surrey, where I was a guard/conductor from early ‘86 until ‘92. I’m back in Yorkshire now doing the old signalling as I said. It’s been a great career, but boy, how the time has flown. Here’s to your career as a driver, I hope it’s a long one. All the best Eric. Thanks for an excellent channel.
What a lovely comment Simon and thankyou for watching the vids, i do hope you enjoy them.
We all have a story i suppose mate! Some more positive than others but i suppose we just have to do our best with the hand we are dealt.
Sorry to make you feel old but i was born in Jan 92! Haha! Sounds like a great career though, congrats. I bet it has been worth it 😊
Thanks again
Hey Eric! Congratulations on the 10k mate, and thanks for the shout out for my baseboards! Always a pleasure to see what you’ve been upto with everything 😁 cheers, Tim
Couldnt have done it without you Tim! Thanks so much.
There is someone after you in the comments on here btw!
Hey Eric. Hope you keep accumulating those zeros on your channel. The Kenton model shop on the bridge was called Puffers. Along time gone now but I just about hold the memories of the visits. It Closed in the mid 90s and of course the Harrow model shop closed in the early/mid 00s which moved to much smaller premises in North Harrow for a short while but quickly succumbed 😢
I remember them both. I think we are so lucky to have had such great model shops.
@disguisedprepper as with all things times and tastes change. Rent goes up. Custom falls. But we seem to be in somewhat of a resurgence in past years in many 'geek' hobbies and long may it continue.
Hi Eric, congratulations on reaching 10k, and thank you very much for the mention.
You are welcome back anytime. 😊
Thanks a bunch, you are so welcome!
Popped up in summer this year on the way to Yorkshire with my bestie who owns the model shop in Leighton Buzzard. Unsure if you remember.
We really loved the shop and you had a great vibe! All the best!
Eric
@@UndergroundEric oh we definitely remember you guys, it’s not often someone comes in and says, ‘I’ve got some 5 1/2 inch gauge in my boot, fancy a look?’
Also being a Buckinghamshire girl, I tend to remember the fellow Bucks people that come in, especially the ones that own model shops and know where Aston Clinton is. 😃
Hi Eric, Your happy memories of Ruislip resonate with me because I lived there from 1947 to 1958! My link to you centres on buying an ‘Ever Ready’ underground train set in 1951 from ‘Inwards’ shop on the corner of Ruislip High St and King Edwards Road. It cost £3.9.6 (£3.50). As you may know I was restricted by the fact the track design prevented the construction of any points. I did not realise it may have run on Hornby Dublo 3 rail track but in any case I could not afford anything HD! I spotted a video on your channel of the road bridge over the line at Ruislip station ; I walked over this bridge every day on my way to school either in Ruislip or later in Harrow. As you said - All happy memories. Best of Luck and Congrats on reaching 10k subs. Tony. PS still an enthusiastic 00 modeller. T🚂
£3.50! Wow!!! I did have an ever ready set myself a while ago!
Small world hey mate
Well mate thanks for sharing. Sounds like you've had a bit of a rocky road to travel . So I understand why you do the modelling. Cheers take care.
Thanks Alan, you could say that. I think ive found my place in life at last though.
All the best.
An excellent video. I thought you must be an underground driver. Really good to have the background and so good to see so many younger people in the hobby. Well done
Hi Eric
Thanks for sharing your journey to where you are now.
I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 and am gathering ideas for a Metropolitan line.
Accumulating stock and currently dodging the heat .
Congratulations on 10k subscribers.
Thoroughly enjoy your videos and great to see your layout evolving 😉
Wow! That must be the furthest the Met has travelled?? 🤣 thanks so much!
whats are the astralian underground lines caled
Congratulations and credit where it's due.
Glad to see that you surprised us all by donning a shirt and tie. You sure do scrub up well!
Okay, maybe you're saving that for the big silver plaque one.
Bravo ragazzo!
😂😂 have to wear one at work! Apparently its for all the customers i see, whilst sat inside a 66 by myself 👀 work that one out eh! 😂
@@UndergroundEric Well I'm hoping that it's a Lamborghini Miura and that it belongs to you as well!
Well done Eric .i enjoyed the film .. All the best for your next 10.000
Thankyou Allan
Hi Eric, congratulations on the 10,000 subscribers, you’ve had an interesting life so far warts and all enjoyed your story long may it continue thanks for sharing cheers Al
Cheers Al! All the best mate
That’s awesome Eric! Your videos are always a highlight to the day
Thanks Tris, trying to catch you up mate! 😝
loved your story eric ,so many similarity's .i lived in Harefield (mount Pleasant)when to school in northwood, (potter street) went to uxbridge tec was a apprentice with BT so work all around Hillingdon as a telephone engineer and spent a lot of my youth at west drayton and iver station train spotting ,actually went on the western tribute tour , western ranger being my favourite loco ,was lucky enough to see the last of the westerns which gives my age away, my dad was my inspiration for my love of trains ..............tony ps glad the trainsporters box came in handy
forgot to say congrats on 10,000
Thanks Tony, wow how strange hey! Such a small world. Great story!!!
Cant beat a western 😍
Very good program leader...I loved it, honestly !!
Appreciate it mate, i werent sure what the response would be so its nice to hear
Congratulations and great to be part of your 10,000! Familiar places you talk about. Grew up in South Kenton and then moved to Hatch End and Pinner. If you are talking about the model shop in Kenton on the bridge opposite the station, wasn’t it called Puffers? Preferred The Model Shop in central Harrow but there again the owner lived in Hatch End and knew my Dad which was handy!
Thanks a bunch. Small world isnt it eh!
Congregations and thank you for sharing your story.
Thankyou mate
Could do with a 5 inch tour of your fleet that you've amassed over the last few years when it's a bit nicer weather!
I have thought about this actually, sadly as you say i thought of it a bit too late into the year! Ha. I need to get my steam engines back together also before hand 😝
Gratz on 10k Eric. Keep the videos coming mate.
Thanks a bunch!
Excellent channel, great to see the progress of the layout
Cheers mate
The model shop in Kenton was called Puffers, there was also Harrow model shop that did everything to do with modelling, I am from the ruislip/northwood area so recognise alot of parts of your layout
Hi Eric, congratulations on your 10k subs, also to see you in your dream job. Great to see you with your friends. Keep the videos coming 👍🚂
Thanks so much mate 🙏🏻
Congratulation on your viewing figures. You make your videos enjoyable for not only covering your modelling but your easy going and enjoyable personality.
Thats very kind thankyou
Eric, congrats on 10000 subscribers. From the Yank across the pond, Bill from California
Thanks Bill, wow all the way from Cali! Thats nuts!!
Well done on reaching 10000 subs. Very interesting video, nice to get some background, and good of you to open up about your past and share so much with us. Keep up the good work and all the very best for the future.
Cheers mate, glad you found it enjoyable to watch! All the best
A fascinating insight to who you are in the first part of the video Eric, very enjoyable as always. That hour zoomed by. Well done on reaching 10,000 too..all the best.
Cheers, im so glad people enjoyed it, i was on the fence with posting it or not.
Thanks mate
great video and a great insight. Best wishes and Merry Christmas
Thanks, same goes to you! 🙂
The turntable controller is definitely Fleischmann, so I'd imagine the turntable is too, though it's been modified to look more British. Blimey. Just looked up how much Fleischmann turntables cost - between four and five hundred quid. As far as I know, it's the same model they introduced in the 70s (or maybe 80s), so Roco/Fleischmann are really coining it in with that.
I actually liked the way it looked with your curved track crossing the track leading onto the turntable. I've always wanted to that sort of weird bespoke not-a-diamond crossing, but I've never summoned up the courage to build my own track. Though I think it's become easier with things like Templot. It's the sort of thing which makes me as an exhibition visitor do a double take as it's something that's obviously not off Peco's shelves. Look forward to seeing how it all develops.
Congratulations on the 10k subscribers.
Yeah thats right mate, its had peco sides put on it ect to make it look a little different.
I think though the turntable will sadly depart, although with the new proposed design of the layout there is no reason i cant extend it slightly more behind where the turntable actually sits and relocate it!
Great video really enjoyed the back story and the magazine style video. Thanks again for making these.
Thanks for watching me waffle on for an hour mate! 😝
Very enjoyable and interesting life story. Loved seeing Western Champion. My own layout operates in “freelance” mode sometimes and includes models of locos that visited Swanage when I worked there. I don’t yet have a Western Champion model.
Thankyou. Yeah thats a good idea, you just have to make sure its enjoyable above all else.
Champion has been to swanage so i guess it must be on the list! The dapol model is probably the best thing they have produced in OO tbh.
Congratulations, Eric. I've not watched all of this video as of yet. I can see it's something special to you. It's wonderful to hear a little back story. The Severn Valley Railway is one of my local lines, and It's a shame I never got to see you. It's because of this railway that my love of Class 42/43 and Class 52's came from. Anyway, all the best to your Commander in Chief and yourself young Eric.
Cheers mate. Oh man i loved my SVR visits, was blown away by it. What a wonderful place and amazing locos too.
Thanks bud
Eric, well done on the following, and thank you so much for this deep and honest show and tell of your life and travels through this world, you modeling and your engineering, please please please keep making your vids and making me grin. Hope to see you on a GL5 event.
Thanks so much. Not sure on GL5 if i will join up again or not, didnt have the best experience last time, do you have an engine?
I am building a 5" met "growler" I was thinking of joining GL5, but not yet. I belong to a local ME club with a track so that will be the main running ground. I may need to come to you and get the sound card, me going thumpa, thumpa, thumpa, when stationary.😄@@UndergroundEric
@@graveneyshipright well i might be slightly biased but what a great choice 😝😝
Im sure we can sort something! Where in the country roughly are you located?
based in London, in the land of the 3 rails. will send you an @ on another platform. Mind the gap.

A most superb jobby Eric. Well done, for a most informative, fun and of course entertaining extended video! I watched in two shifts before and after dinner! Cheers from Abbey Road John
Thanks JoPo! People like you are very inspiring. Especially all the Abbey Road stuff. All the best mate!
Hi Eric, I do Enjoy your videos, and this was no exception. I often catch up with your updates whilst out in the garage doing stuff to the layout. Was good to hear some background on how the underground theme came about . Congrats on your 10k !
Thanks man, likewise! I enjoy your content too when im in the man cave 😂 your scenery work is awesome
Congrats mate, been a fan of your channel for a few years, well deserved
Appreciate that, thankyou 😊
Railway shop near the bridge in Kenton was called Puffers. Sadly it closed many years ago.
Thanks
Great video Eric ! Thanks for the gen on the AGR model shop . Gunna email them to see if they do foreign locos DCC fitting as hate doing it myself ..
Thanks, hopefully Ant can help you out mate!
Congrats on you 10K subscribers, love your videos, reminds me of my childhood and adolescence in London. With your interest in the Met, look out for a copy of From Steam to Silver by J. Graheme Bruce. Covers history of the Met (and other sub surface lines ) and goes into a lot of detail on the Stock. One of my favorite books when growing up.
Except for occasional visit , I have to make do with the NYC Subway.
Ive got that book aswell as many others, all are super handy for inspiration arent they.
The history behind it all is so interesting
Congratulations Eric on 10,000 Subs. Really like your videos, enjoy seeing the layout progress. The model shop that you refer to at Kenton, I think it was called Buffers. Remember going there in the early 1980’s with my Dad (fond memories).
Thankyou! I think from a couple others its Puffers, close enough though! I must look up some photos of it ect.
Gotta love the internet when you cant remember something hey!!
Congrats on 10k subs the effort it takes to get there is immense so congratulations on a job well done
Congrats Eric on a great video and getting the 10K of followers. I first watched your channel on how to program the points using the z21, when you also got some point motors delivered to you at a station. I live in Sydney, Australia and love to watch your channel take care Dallas
Wow hi Dallas, thats a long old way! 😊 i hope you found it useful mate!
Thanks for checking in!
Congrats on 10,000, well deserved. Interesting back story (we are all nosey). Roll on 20,000. It's winter now so you need to get on with the layout, too cold for cars and 5". (My crash barriers have been around for over a year!)
Cheers mate. Ah now you tell me! I didnt know you did those! Doh! 😇
I agree though, i really need to step it up a notch!!
Appreciate your help with everything in the past sir. All the best
Hi Eric, Congratulatioons on an excellent video following your acheiving 10K subscribers, I found it very moving and made me think about my Dad whom I lost a few years ago but from whom I got my love of all things railways.. You are very good at getting your ideas over and your other interests as well. I was very interested in your log cabin solution, so would love to know how you chose your solution as I am thinking about the same solution due to no room in our house.. Also can you put a link in for Tim Horn as his baseboards seem very good, and I would rather buy based on a on a reccomendation.
Please keep up the great content and I always look forward to seeing your latest videos. Respect to Charlotte as well for letting you follow your dreams with her as part of your journey, you have obviously overcome many challenges and respect to what you have both now achieved together. Warmest regards Mark
Thanks so much Mark. I guess its similar for many of us in that it brings back floods of memories hey.
For the log cabin there is a place called london timber buildings that i used. I visited their ‘showroom’ type setup and chose a style i liked, then modified it by moving windows, changing where the doors are (so it matches the lift out section perfectly) and also gave them custom measurements.
It was a lot of money but been worth it completely. Only slight issue is in summer/winter the wood expands/contracts a lot so you have to be careful where you screw things to the walls.
Tim@timhorn.co.uk i think is his email address mate.
He is very helpful but only a one man band so has a bit of a waiting list. Excellent boards though, its worth it!
Gratz on the 10k mate, you are doing some serious numbers across all the platforms. I regret selling all my childhood hornby stuff, I had loads of it and sold it for pennies as a teen.
Thanks bro. Ahh really, that sucks lol, wish i had more of it when i was a kid tbf!
What a great video insight into your life how you got started keep making these videos Eric your reach 20 thousand in no time mate
Thanks mate, you never know eh! See what happens 😇
Congratulations on hitting 10,000 subs mate well done, as it takes a bit of work to do that> great stuff!
Cheers mate, im shocked its got to this point tbh!
Congratulations
Thanks
Many congratulations on achieving 10k subs. Well done. 👍
Thankyou ever so much 😊
Please keep posting on u tube Eric as I enjoy your video's and don't venture to other platforms. Really enjoy your stuff and once lived in Harefield so it's a bit nostalgic, unfortunately there's no tube in the New Forest.
I will do my best! I enjoy it!
Small world hey! I suppose your closest now is the IOW 🙂
Eric, if memory serves the model shop on Kenton railway bridge was called Puffers
Thanks Geoff!
Love your stuff Eric - well done on 10k and your story is very moving - isn’t it amazing the way these inanimate objects connect us with people, memories and ourselves.
It was your shed that got me to click on this channel but it was your passion for modelling and sense of place that has kept me watching. I have a scheme to move out of the house too once I’ve renovated our old cottage in the Highlands. My railway will be in old byre (cowshed) and eventually in to the garden - coarse vintage 0 gauge, so quite different from yours, although I reckon you’d like the live steam Bassett Lowke and possibly my original Hornby clockwork Met - no name plate but basically the best they could do in era to make a Sarah Siddons in lithographed tinplate…
Keep going - here’s to 100k one day 🎉
100k! I wish haha, thankyou mate.
Yeah i wasnt sure wether to share but to my suprise it has sparked some interest!
That sounds like fun for a railway plus live steam is of course always a hit 🙂
Love your work Eric. Keep it up mate.
Cheers buddy
The model rail shop in Kenton was called "Puffers" on the bridge, I think?
You are the second person to mention Puffers! (Someone else mentioned it elsewhere) so i think that may be right! Mega!!
Grats on 10k Eric. Well deserved mate!
Thanks so much!
Well done on 10,000 really enjoy the channel and nailed Hornby to a tea. What’s your thoughts on companies like accurascale and cavalex raising the bar that bachmann are working hard to keep up with
Well done on the 10k

Congratulations on your 10k milestone.
Hey mate, its still knackered im afraid. Not had chance to look at it. The mechanism had an issue and the decoder went pop i believe. Maybe one day!
I normally use precision labels for custom stuff mate
@@UndergroundEric Thanks Eric, all the best mate. ☯💯🙏🏼
Nice, interesting video. Did you ever get your Class 92 fixed? I think I saw you were selling your sleeper coaches on Twitter. Thanks Tim.
Hi Tim, yeah the mk5s are for sale, they just dont suit the layout tbh!
Accurascale said they will take the 92 back, just a case if getting it to them, its a huge box to post!
@@UndergroundEric Ah I see. Well, if you get in touch with them via the online chat they should send you a pre paid form to attach. I had to send mine back for repair and they were really good with process. Thinking about it I think they arranged a collection. Are you selling the coaches as one or selling them per pack?
Hi Eric, congrats on 10k!🎉🎉🎉. Do you still have your o gauge layout? Because at my local model railway club/shop/museum we have one that’s identical!
Cheers! I only ever had a small shunting layout, i got rid if it ages ago now mate
In the summertime you should go to York model engineers it’s a very good club recommend
Yeah i wouldnt mind a visit there, its just such a long way! Maybe when we go up to Gilling again next time we could see about squeezing a visit in.
Thanks
Congratulations Eric! Really well done. I too had a clockwork set but that was decades ago .
The whole concept of an underground layout is different and probably has great appeal and that has probably helped plus your personality.
I have been doing youtube for sometime and am always interested in what other enthusiasts are doing and the progress they have made.
Keep up the great work. Stay safe and strong.
PS I also had the first Gti that came to Canada around 1982 👍🖊📐💥❤️🔥
Thanks Charlie, awesome! I think a lot of kids got the bug the same way hey.
Appreciate the kind words.
Yeah its always interesting to find new channels, i often watch them while modelling myself too.
Cant beat a nice GTI mate 😍😍
The Gti was the first ones to come to Toronto, unfortunately I had overheating problems. Nice car but it was a dressed up Rabbit and not the European model
@@charlie1872 thats a shame! Probably a valuable car these days mate
And my friend had a Sirroco for about 15 years. Kept it in pristine condition. Sold it for a very good price. Don’t see them around now
I added a front damper/skirt and was belting it along the highway when I heard this awful noise.
When I looked in my rear view mirror I saw the damper exploding in pieces behind me in front of another car. I continued driving🤣
Eric, who manufactures the coaches behind the Rapido engine at 57:02?
Thats a Bachmann 94xx mate, the coaches are Metropolitan Railway ‘Ashbury’ coaches, they are 3d prints by CDC Design
