The name Baling can be traced to a series of events detailed in the story of Raja Bersiong (The Fanged King), a popular legend of Kedah, recorded in the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa. Raja Bersiong was a ruthless vampire-like king with a taste for human blood who preyed on his subjects. His subjects finally rose against him and burned down the palace. When the fanged king fled his palace at the Old Kedah capital in Lembah Bujang, he fled to a place named Merbau and began removing his fangs by twisting them by hand. As a result of the twisting act, Merbau was renamed as Merbau Pulas where pulas in Malay means twisting. After the king had successfully removed both his fangs, he threw them away to a faraway place. The place where he stood when he threw his fangs is known as Baling which means throw and the place believed to be the site where the fangs landed was named Siong, which means fang in Malay, one of the villages in Baling district. (Malaysian Version of Count Dracula)

At 9:04, when he said those words, I almost cried. It's wonderful, even surreal, that you've met such a person. Remember your parents, and enjoy your holidays here.
The name "Baling" come from a legend, there was a king who accidentally become a vampire of a sort after he eat spinash that have blood in it, the cook accidentally cut her finger, a drop of blood get into the meal but she have no time to replace it. The king find the spinash is so delicious and asking the cook why it tasted different than before, the cook try to hide it but forced to confess. Afterward the king demand her to cook the spinash the same way everyday, which means with her blood in it. Later, the king want more blood as he grow fangs and become ruthless, he demand blood sacrifice from the people. But in the end he realized that he have become an evil king, so he come to this place, pull out his fangs and throw them here. Since then the place called "Baling", means "Throw". The legend also explain why some spinash are red 😁
@@EllisWR The king was a real person you know, named Raja Ong Maha Perita Deria, one of the king of the Old Kedah. The story however might be an exaggeration, but there was a rebellion to overthrow him allegedly because of that. The story might also be just to entertain kids who ask "why the spinach red?" My late uncle never eat spinach for the rest of his life because of the story 😂

Hello you two! I never know where you will pop up next! It seems like you spend a relatively short time (less than a month) in a country, and then border bounce to avoid the somewhat convoluted visa process? Do you find that most land borders are happy to allow you back in, even if it has been only a short time since your last visit? Have you ever experienced any issues, and if so, maybe you could talk about that side of your travels in your videos, as it is a fundamental part of an extended trip. A shout out to Alicia's great English teaching skills, too. She was so patient with the young girl in the market, and could imagine her being a great teacher.
Hey Stephen maybe we'll chat about it at some point or maybe on a livestream cos I like to keep the videos proper travel based. Yeah we do exactly that it's easiest and cheapest and we like to visit new places often! We just max out the free stay without a visa so Thailand 30 days etc, or if we have to pay for say a 30 day visa for Indonesia we'd just visit for 30 then leave. We've never had a problem with anybody in 2 years on the road, we're always very polite and respectful when talking to any officials, and we always have a rough plan of the next few months incase they ever ask what were doing. Some countries require onward travel but we rarely ever get asked, if we do we just show our plane or bus ticket out, if you don't have book one on the spot. Can also book flights out for like a tenner using onward ticket that then get cancelled after a day or two. They can see we are always in and out of countries, were never staying for like 6 months constantly border running and we don't look like scruffy backpackers either so we never get bothered. I genuinely think being respectful and treating people properly you shouldn't run into many problems, so many people speak to locals in this part of the world awfully and it doesn't do them any favours Any questions about anything just ask always happy to answer anything. Alicia actually teaches online a little! Thanks for that she's good isn't she! Have a top day mate 🙏

Since you enjoyed Baling that much, you ought to check Taiping town in the state of Perak. It's got that same old town feel like baling but a little more modernized. If you do go there, try to visit the kampungs (villages) nearby. I'm from KL but I had travelled to Taiping several times and love the air and the views there.
Helpful phrases to learn while in Malaysia : - Terima kasih (tuh-ree-mah kah-seh) - Thank you - Ya (yah) and Tidak (tee-dak) - Yes and No - Di Amanda tandas? (dee ma-nah tan-das) - Where is the bathroom? - Di mana ini (dee mah-nah ee-nee) - Where is this? - Meja untuk dua/satu orang, sila (Meh-jah oon-yook doo-ah/sah-too o-rang, see-lah) - Table for two/one, please Most of the time English will get you everywhere you need to be, but it helps to have a few phrases in your back pocket to be polite.

Ellis... that asam pedas you got there by the river is probably the "asam pedas daging tetel". They're not the normal daging but more like the fat tissues and tendons and veins and leftovers from cut meats. The best ones are in Melaka, my hometown. If one doesn't know how to prepare it well, the asam pedas will get too oily like the one you experienced here. Too bad.. you got to try it again somewhere else, preferably in Melaka.
I think your right it nearly gave me a heart attack aha, probably the only meal in Malaysia I couldn't finish literally was sooooo heavy. Will have to try my friend we have lots to explore on future trips thankyou!

We're pretty much same as you on that one mate! Keep commenting about Khon Kaen and one day we'll get there!
next plan to baling...hahahhahaha..tq for advice
Well nice place!
Hey check my last Malaysia series out on the channel! We made some videos in Taiping and Kuala Sepetang!
How about Kuala kangsar, did you stop there?

Helpful phrases to learn while in Malaysia :
- Terima kasih (tuh-ree-mah kah-seh) - Thank you - Ya (yah) and Tidak (tee-dak) - Yes and No - Di Amanda tandas? (dee ma-nah tan-das) - Where is the bathroom? - Di mana ini (dee mah-nah ee-nee) - Where is this? - Meja untuk dua/satu orang, sila (Meh-jah oon-yook doo-ah/sah-too o-rang, see-lah) - Table for two/one, please Most of the time English will get you everywhere you need to be, but it helps to have a few phrases in your back pocket to be polite.

The small town of Baling historically remembered for the venue of the 'Talk' (negotiation) between the representative of the British government that rules the Malay Land (Tanah Melayu) and the communist terrorist during the insurgent era in 1955. For more info, visit 'Baling Talks' Wikipedia.

We loved your rich exploratory trip in the town with your charming Elisha Thank you for an enjoyable and informative tour
Your great thanks for watching
Welcome back to Malaysia to both of you...sweet couple❤rm23 very cheap lunch😮😍
So good for all that delicious food! Thankyou 🇲🇾🙏
Ellis... that asam pedas you got there by the river is probably the "asam pedas daging tetel".
Hello.... after Kedah it is suggested that U all go down to Melaka n Johor Bahru... besides distinctive food there are historical and interesting places to see...👌👌👌
