    You need a new fly wheel the ring in the center of the fly wheel has come loose and your pick up timing is wrong this can change every time you start the motor it will be in a different position look at the ring in the center of the fly wheel and you will be able to move it with your fingers I am a retiredJohnson factory trained at OMC mechanic I’ve seen this problem twice in 35 years I’m sure this is your problem hard to fine

      Doesn't this mean the other cylinders will also be off according to firing order?

      @@randymiller1604 Randy it is June 2022. My 1996 200 omc was running on plane then bogged down I limped into the dock. Have since changed plugs; coils, power pack plug wires. And it started today and would not idle but at times appeared to run backwards as well. When you say a new flywheel can the ring be replaced or is it a whole new flywheel assembly.?

    • @randymiller1604
      @randymiller1604 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@christianbuhlmann7820 you have to replace the entire flywheel

    This ring sends the signal to the power pack so it knows what cylinder needs to fire when it’s misaligned the timing is off the ring is glued in place with a epoxy it can come loose

    I had same problem with my 225. It was my fault. I had coil wires from top wrong. Orange/blue on top. Plain orange middle. Orange/green bottom. Just 2 cents i threw 700 dollars at.

    Hey was wondering if you ever figured this problem out having the same problem with my '96 Johnson 200 replace the stator timing base and power pack now it will run forward and then kick back and run backwards

      The trigger wires were backwards. I followed the instructions but the colors didn't match. Now it runs perfect. So make sure the colors match on your trigger

      Hey dapper Dan, I'm having this same exact issue as well, just replaced power pack, stator l, and t8mer base, but will reverse rotation after start up and run backwards, I have the colored wires 0lugged in and matching for each bank, but I'm g9nna just try swapping the two around see what happens.

      Make absolutely sure that the Warriors coming from the power pack to the coils are correct if you mix up two wires it will try to run backwards for sure

    I know this is an old post, but its the only one with a similar problem to mine. I have a 1978 Evinrude 140, and it runs ok in the tank. It idles real high, and wants to stall when I put it in gear in the lake. The timing light shows it's about 30 degrees advanced with the throttle closed. It is runnung CCW when looking down on it. Why are the slots for rope starting it designed to turn it the opposite way? I thought I had a sheared key too, but still need to remove the flywheel. Very weird.

    • @dapperdanp2485
      @dapperdanp2485  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is very strange. The main thing is to turn the starter and see which direction the flywheel is turning with the starter. The high idle sounds like an air leak or it's not getting enough fuel. Is your bulb getting hard when you pump it?

    • @wayne3340
      @wayne3340 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @dapperdanp2485 Ok I need to slap myself. It's running clockwise like it should, I was looking at the starter wrong. I made myself a puller and removed the flywheel, sure enough, key sheared off. It was running way advanced, like 30 degrees at idle. 2,300 rpm.
      I replaced the key and torqued the flywheel and now it runs so slow, about 500 rpm, it wants to stall. Time to adjust the cable I think.

    On the other side is number one should always start with number one and do your timing from there.

    I am having the same problem with my 2 stroke Mercury 9.9 hp.
    Pull the starter rope and sometimes it yanks the handle out of your hand.
    When it does start, it will immediately kick and run backwards - no telltale.
    I checked no.1 with timing light and found this cylinder fires where it should.
    I checked no.2 and discovered this cylinder is advanced about 160 degrees too far.
    I examined the flywheel, magnets are okay and in the right place.
    Everything works for cylinder no.1 it should work the same for cylinder no.2. Right?
    Nothing seems to be adjustable - I'm stumped.
    Any ideas?

      If you have the correct flywheel the only other thing is the power back or ignition module whatever you wanna call it it decides when to fire this work

      Thank you for your response. Your suggestion was correct.
      After I tested everything I could test, the only conclusion I could come up with was the Ignition Switch Box. Everything else was in good working order.
      The part I needed was "No Longer Available," so I had to take a chance on the recommended replacement part. A $70.00 step of faith.
      It worked beautifully runs good. Now I can see 9.9hp is far too small for my boat.

      cdi is made in america. putr together in america. my shops have used them for I think 30 years now. How many bad in all that time? zero. I mean NIB bad. How many factory bad? some years 3 out of every 7. For those chinese comments. You do know that many American companies build things there that are top quality right? They leave America becasue unions have wages so high they go bankrupt. Not sayin it is the right thing. Just a fact of life. and NO they are NOT doing slave labor in China either..
