  • This revised video shows how to test an electric Stator and Trigger on an old Johnson and Evinrude V4 outboard. I show how to remove the flywheel, stator, trigger and voltage regulator.
    I want to thank my subscribers for pointing out the errors in the original, Mercury Stator windings are typically green and blue, OMC V4 Trigger windings are also Green and Blue - and I mostly work on Mercury outboards!

    Best one I seen on TH-cam so far own explaining some of it
    Thanks for the readings on some of it I have no service manual which makes it hard

    Thanks for the time and effort you put into this. This familiarized me with my 1982 Johnson 112 spl in just ~14 min. Epic educational content.

    I have a 1982 115 HP Johnson motor and both stator wires for charging the CDI read about 277 ohms or almost exactly half of the 550 ohms you measured ... almost like they used the center tap off of the stator windings. Do you know if they made a drastic change like that for 1982 onwards?

      @Kr0N05 That is something I'm not sure of but a service manual for that manual would be your best source of the proper values

    Looking for answers have 1990 Johnson 150 with a few bad teeth on the flywheel starter ring can this be replaced and any idea where to find one I’ve seen some used flywheels around 3 to 4 hundred I just need the starter ring thanks for any help can’t find any info on this I know you can change the rings on a car thought the outboards would be same concept

      Do you have a part number of the flywheel? There should be one on it.

    Does the ring spin under the 4 clamps that hold down on the trigger base? Or do they clamp the ring solid and just the base moves ? Mine is somewhat stuck , one of the clamps was diggin in

    • @tedsmarinerepair8956
      @tedsmarinerepair8956  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trigger base should rotate smoothly under the flywheel. Re-adjust the clamp so that it does not bind up on the trigger

    I have a 1994 evinrude v4 88 and I'm not getting fire on the #2 cylinder. Coil is good. Please help.

      @ToledoFlatheads swap the two power packs from port side to the starboard side. Recheck spark. If it jumps to the other cylinder power pack is bad.

      @ToledoFlatheads 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Doesn't have two power packs.

    I understand the stator but what is the trigger? An do we take it off to grease it or anything as well or replace it

    • @tedsmarinerepair8956
      @tedsmarinerepair8956  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trigger is a set of coils which send a voltage pulse to the power pack (ignition module). This "triggers the module to fire the coil for the correct cylinder at the correct time. Any type of silicone or dry lube works as a lubricant. I find grease dries over the years.

    I've been trying to find out what threads are on the crankshaft to get a new flywheel bolt. Google has failed, all the forums have failed..do you know what size threads are on there?

    • @tedsmarinerepair8956
      @tedsmarinerepair8956  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you need a new flywheel nut?

    • @murraymadness4674
      @murraymadness4674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tedsmarinerepair8956 yes I do, I could get one if I know what thread size it is..they want $20 for one online vs $2 for a 7/8-9 nut, which is what I think it is now that I have the flywheel off and can measure it.

      I but you s set of these count gages their easy to use and as far as for me have never been wrong easy to use just put the teeth in the threads till you find the one that fits down in each grove and it will fit snug and perfect when you find the one that does look at the gage a lot like filler gages

      Likely a stator problem, Test the coils for resistance and that should show it's failed

      I feel like since I have to pull the fly wheel I will go a head and do the stator regulator coil packs wires and plugs
