There's a pdf in the game folder explaining that this is meant as a prologue to a bigger game. There's also characterisations of the people in the game, really good stuff. I'm above excited for what they'll release next. Hope there'll be some killer riffs in the full game. Can't tease me with the Ol' Wizard and not attempt to blow my eardrums out 😅🤘
There was something on the last newspaper article about a new moon discovered for Mars called Harmony. It was at the very bottom, but I'm wondering if it's a big clue for what's going on. I was immediately pulled into this. I absolutely love Lovecraftian stories/games. This was a gem.
Me as a Polish person having a chuckle at Mr Gnida. The devs literally called someone Mr Scum. There are a lot of flavours here that I think would be recognisable for someone with Eastern European roots tbh. The brands were actually from communism (like Frania laundry machine). The whole odd atmosphere of people being checked by authorities resembles what the neighbouring countries had to go through after the Chernobyl catastrophe. Mind, I was not born then yet but I heard the tales from my family (like being urged by authorities to queue in front of certain buildings like schools to get iodine tablets, to stay inside... only after a few days people learned what happened).
Thank you, Rindavir.👍 Bits of info like that make the games so much more interesting. Dziękuję. If the bigger version is released, please give us more.
@@anniemcguire2359 I definitely will! Honestly, this game gave me a bit of a national trauma even though I was never actually born during that period. But I guess family stories can prove enough. I gave it a bit of thought and I can add a few points: - the flat buildings are very much reflective of Soviet architecture, meant for utility not aesthetics. The way the flat buildings are placed is actually purposeful - they create a kind of a 'shell' around the center with their labyrinthine positioning - the assumption was that in times of nuclear war, the outer 'shell' was meant to take the brunt of it, saving the buildings (and hopefully?) people inside said shell. It's kind of dark when you think about it - the architects designing the place knowing the people in the outer regions will be pretty much sacrificed. I guess you see it in the game with the outer flat buildings being the first to empty - but maybe I'm reading too deeply into it. - the Church as the main authority. This one was more of a head-scratcher for me. Poland was always a very religious country - though in days of communism, the Church was actually one of few places of relative resistance (as we know, it was usually seen as 'the opium for the masses' by communists). So it being used as an oppressive authority didn't click to me fully. But then again, I think it might be a more recent commentary on polish church having their own media channels (tv, media) and using them to sway actual socio-political influence. Which also links to let's say cooling of relationship between younger generations (gen x, millennials and younger) and the Church in Poland. I could probably pick up more but it's morning and my brain might not work as efficiently as I'd hope it would :P that being said, I'm happy to do a full analysis of the game once it's released! And if there's ever gameplay of games like Darkwood, I'm happy to contribute there too!
@@Sentient_Taaco Holy cow, Rindaviir. So Poland has fallen to the American illusion of a church. How sad, how terribly sad. We're fighting that trend, trying to get the Christian faith back out of the political power-grab mentality, and here, too, the younger generations are leaving those churches. Thanks for getting back to me, and thank you for saying that you'll provide backstories for the full version. Can't wait!
They succeded very well to catch the spirit of 1980's after Chernobyl reactions of the government which was very common on our side of the Curtain. And mixing it with Lovecraftian vibe was very original. I also liked how they showed a typical well maintained flat in the old apartment block, many still looks like that.
Chris has a title section for designating terrible indie games. He should have a title section for the best of the best, because this Lovecraftian treasure belongs on it!
While I am an occasional fan of cheap jumpscares, lore heavy, slow burn horror is definitely my jam, and this absolutely scratched an itch I didn’t know I had.
It was the end of the world. Hell on earth. Everyone so worried about themselves, they all thought the one guy died and never checked on him. The main character was worried about his appearance and even turned away the old lady when she needed his help. This game was excellent. Look forward to whatever the dev drops next!
Amazing Story!! I too want to know more about this!! Also; the 1st horror game (well I've seen lately) that introduces a "Fusebox" but no power issues for you to deal with hahahahaha
I got the house to myself for the first time in a year, there's premium barbeque and cheesecake from the joint down the street, and CJU just uploaded. This night is gonna be perfect.
Thank you for playing, mate. It wasn’t that much of a jumpscare heavy or ghost appear kind a game, it was more like a lovecraftian mystery type horror game which is more heavy to suspense than scare. It’s about the fear creating, and story was all about that. Brilliant presentation to the details and the story. Liked it.
Dziękuję za kolejny świetny film! Tym razem pisze do Ciebie w moim ojczystym języku z którego jestem bardzo dumna. Cudownie ze grasz w gry ze wszystkich stron świata. Pozdrawiam Cię serdecznie❤
Dopethrone was a masterpiece and the story behind it quintessentially British dystopian. One guy ended up becoming a monk at a Russian monestary printing underground zines in Alaska. Maybe he went crazy from learning the truth
This one sucked me in. I could relate to the creepy, run-down apartment setting with its tenants and building superintendent. Having lived in inner city apartments, I know how the inhabitants can get to feel like one big dysfunctioal family 😂, which makes the otherworldly threat more real for me. I usually like some larger context in a game, but I was fine with the way this one played out.👍 Btw, Chris, thanks for showing us the alternate ending. Have a great Sunday!
I've sometimes wondered what it would be like living in an inner city apartment. Not the most pleasant experience i expect. I've only lived in two apartments (one of which I'm currently living in), both in suburban complexes.
@@shadowjudge921 Actually, I loved it. Apartments were cheaper and often bigger than in gentrified parts of the city. The mix of people was more varied. And, in my experiece at least, if you treated others with respect and didn't do dumb things you got along fine. Plus, everything was relatively nearby--grocery stores, restaurants, galleries, etc.
That was really good ! Like you, I was captivated from the start, with the world-building and the story definitely carrying the game. Really refreshing amongst a sea of poorly written indie games. Thanks for getting the 2 endings Chris !
Man, I really liked this game! The story is intriguing, the characters are good. It's a shame they didn't explain more, about the church, about the hole, about everything. It seemed unfinished. But I saw that it's a prologue to a bigger game, I'm anxiously waiting for it to be true!
Supernatural horror elements aside, I must say that the game setting felt almost... cozy. Those of us who grew up in Poland in the late 80s/early 90s would have usually either lived in such apartments (including the unmistakable furnishing and woodwork) or spent quite some time with relatives/friends who did.
Smacznego is pronounced more like "schmach-nego." It means something like "enjoy the meal" much like the Japanese Itadakimasu, which technically means "to humbly receive," to express appreciation of the food and those who made them for you.

A really great game. It seems that the Devs were creating parallels with the paranoid fear of the 'thing',.. and the fear that is engendered by political policies of oppression. The whole Communist power structure parallel is fascinating. I would love this game to have had a bigger budget and a longer run time, to really develop the story, and the paranoia. As it stands though, its a great game as it is.. Well done to the Devs, and Chris's great commentary.
