In the end cutscene, Isaac isn't going from the planet surface to space/orbit. He is going from the chunk of the planet you see crash into the main portion of the planet to space because that chunk is where the Marker was. So the 5 seconds of travel is much more realistic... still probably not accurate because of how far from the chunk he ends up, but slightly more realistic than a planet surface to space travel time.

@@nathanlaleff4273That’s not the case. The final chapter takes place on Aegis 7. If you look up you can see the chunk falling and it’s visible in the last cutscene. The hive mind comes out of the hole that the planet crack was removed from. The whole colony is set up around the crack.

so to resume , the overall design of the ishimura is reasonably nice if it has to exist , not super bad , it's just that sharps industrial aesthetics doesn't look so pleasing to see when we would work on the ship for a long time as well as some other unpractical stuff and a lack of safer measures. yet those aesthetics adds to the charm of the Dead space universe.
first the ship was build by a totalitarian government , and those types of regimes generally never really care for the well being of their people , who can be pretty expendable and they focus more on the productivities, so things are made in a strict minimum , most of the time. it would make sense the Ishimura would keep that industrialized aesthetic anywhere since it's basically a floating mine or factory, yet. also it has been on service for many decades already. some issues would finish to come
and secondly when we think about those details and aesthetics, they're symbolical in the context of Dead space. even without some undead mutants , the ship looks ominous , cold and perhaps even gothic , which already reinforces an haunted feel. it strangely fits well with the designs of these creatures. all of those potential risks and unfriendly details from the design of the ship itself adds to the chiliness and the charm of Dead space

The scariest part of DeadSpace weren't the Necromorphs. The scariest part was the stress of playing tech support for the damn space ship and realizing that the simple solution wasn't going to work, so you'd have to slowly troubleshoot the problems piece by piece.

Yeah that's an immediate fail for the Ishimura. Sorry guys, but in hull breach potential alone that's a complete violation of the Engineer's Safety Certification Standards (E.S.C.S). As a machine learning researcher/ECE doctoral student. It actually makes perfect sense to me that the ADS cannons would need to be trained and calibrated individually or at least 3 cannons would need to be trained like that.
In particular, video image recognition systems are incredibly finnicky and they dont have straightforward mathematical relationships mapping 2D image pixel data to 3D position data. Furthermore when using 3 or more cameras to construct 3D plots of position, error is incredibly prone to drift and compounding.
It makes perfect sense to me if the training data was lost then training 3 cannons would likley be the absolute minimum you needed to do in order for the cannons in the area to figure out how to process the visual data above them given the "known" information like the distance the cameras are from each other and what the three cameras are looking at. This whole concept is known as "sensor fusion" or "data assimilation" more generally, referring to using many sensors to know about a thing above you, and visual tracking in particular is a problem which can be very finnicky.
In other words, once the three cannons figure out how to map their own visual feeds to a plot of 3D coordinates showing all asteroids seen by the camera, I could easily see that data able to be extapolated and applied across all cannons across the ship. It would be very unreasonable if Isaac only calibrated one cannon and every other cannon started functioning at peak efficiency.

    • @TheSynchronizer
      @TheSynchronizer หลายเดือนก่อน +20

Interesting take, but would that be necessary with the presence of a laser range finder and the ammunitions ballistic data inputted into the fire control system? You'd only need to train it to recognize rocks bad, ship good, shoot rocks only 🤔.
I don't have a technical background but I was a tank gunner in the army so your explanation seems a bit complex for what appears to be a mechanical issue. To me a lack of calibration as well also indicates a lack of boresight data / gun sight zeroing which could be done by firing and adjusting the system until the you're able to consistently hit targets. 🤔 Which could be why each cannon had to be done individually.

Considering the lack of any OSHA compliance and how cheap life is in the future (plus the emphasis on limb regeneration, which is so common that literal hundreds of clones and cell growth areas are present in the medical bay), it sort of makes sense that mining and engineering suits are so heavily armored, especially the facial region. It seems like a way to cut costs: it’s much cheaper to just mass produce those suits than to actually implement safe working conditions, and by designing them to protect vital organs and lead to ‘clean’ amputations, you can just replace the poor worker’s limb and keep him working with a gravity saw the next day. Whether that’s actually viable economically is another matter, but given the lore it seems that raw material and energy is way more valuable than flesh and blood, so in that case it may very well be economically sound to plan around your workers getting their arms cut off versus actually safe railings and working conditions.

It’s worth noting that in universe they HAD a materials crisis. At some point, materials become too cost prohibitive to aquire compared to the costs; there may be more resources than humanity will need for thousands of years in the Oort Cloud alone, but if you have to pay for years long voyages or FTL jumps on top of the years spent mining,…
Also and far more importantly if the energy crisis, which is the primary concern; unlike Star Trek and Star Wars, it is acknowledged that FTL ain’t cheap. It takes an infinite amount of energy to reach light speed by conventional means,… so no surprise that the infinitely dense main component of their FTL drives are singularity cores which must be disgustingly expensive, like miniature particle accelerator levels of “fuck my wallet.” But they don’t seem to enjoy the +90% efficiency ratings of most sci-fi series either, so you’re looking at small ships costing as much as CERN and requiring top of the line bleeding edge power plants vomiting Giga watts of power at a rate of “let’s vaporize an entire island in an instant.”
Avatar does a good job putting it into perspective; even with the near perfect abilities of units jump and antimatter it still takes hundred to a thousand fusion reactors running non-stop just to keep one or two ships moving at a steady pace without FTL,…
Combined with the fact that there is even an actual overpopulation problem in universe, the logical (an even more grim conclusion if you ask me) isn’t even that people are expendable, it’s that they’re little more than disposable parts no more valuable the plastic wrapping. The only worth a person has is their skill set. Your meat, mind and soul be damned, and we can already see examples of that in real life.

46:50 Little error. From IRL railguns we know that they also have muzzle flashes, since electrical sparks and small amounts of plasma created by the high voltage follow the projectile out the barrel. Also the Asteroid Defense Cannons are actually Mass driver cannons, so a form of railgun

Nice catch, I didn't know that about railguns, and mass drivers would probably make more sense here too. Although, I might argue that for such a muzzle flash to occur, there would need to be air (or some other medium) for the arcs to form the plasma from, although I suppose there are a number of ways to explain that (coolant gas, spark build-up, chipping/sublimation of projectiles, ...).

One thing I will point out is that the Ishimura is a first-of-class vessel, and has likely been the testbed for many of the technologies it utilizes, this can explain why it's so labyrinthine as well: she's been reconfigured more times that are probably recorded as damage has occurred or as new technologies have had the kinks worked out.
26:30 it's not that it can't maintain an orbit because it's not moving fast enough, it's that it never had a stable orbit to begin with, the engines were being used to push away from the planet like they were a VTOL, it's absolutely moronic, but from how it looks like shit went down in the movie, they probably didn't have time to tow the mass into a proper orbit before shit hit the fan and automated systems have been doing heavy station-keeping, the whole thing with getting to orbit through the debris field is because they're moving into a parking orbit, with the amount of weight they're lugging around it'd take weeks. My best guess is they have to drop down to pick up the load and then haul it up to a more stable orbit.
30:00 This is something we're pretty sure is possible, it's called a plasma window, we don't have a working unit, but the math apparently seems to work out. There is a similar technology that is used in particle accelerators called plasma valves, they're used to give time for the accelerated particles to seal the internal vacuum chamber in the event of a breach so the accelerator has enough time to decelerate the particles so they don't, and I'm oversimplifying here, explode air molecules and shred billions of dollars of equipment.
36:20 Best guess, A tank is full, there are four.
43:30 This is 100% gamification, they were originally malfunctioning gravity plating that would instantly splatter the player if they messed up around them, it was changed to arcing so the player isn't INSTANTLY killed and can, in theory, survive a mistake.
47:00 Railguns can have muzzle flash, it's the arcing from the rails to the projectile, as the projectile was part of the circuit before being launched. Though the recoiling barrels hint more toward it being more conventional, could be a hybrid chemical-coil launch system though. Also, dust from obliterated space rock would reflect the light.
48:40 They're using hydroponics (48:58 The room is the Hydroponics Central Hub) so they can also grow fish in a stable manner, so crop rotation wouldn't a factor. Dietary issues ARE absolutely an issue.
54:36 Looking at them, they're probably not bit identifiers, the lights are probably a network or drive activity monitor of some kind.
55:53 Ease of transport, the ship is designed to support the setup of ground stations in the early stages, shuttle flies in, they move food onboard, and it immediately goes for the ground station.
1:00:15 This one pisses me off, in the original it would pull the asteroid into the processor, not detonate it instantly.
1:06:00 Yea, I'm chalking all of the labeling issues here to 'it's government issue'.
1:24:00 You are absolutely correct, the movie showed the system in action.

44:39 Coming from an electrician. While a lock-out tag-out system will provide information as to how long it's being worked on, its main purpose is to physically "lock-out" a specific cicuit from being turned on while maintenence is being performed. If a circuit is being worked on and someone else turns on that breaker, it could easily cause the person working on the circuit to be shocked or even electrocuted as they are not expecting to have to treat the circuit as if it live. The "tag" is the secondary function that lets the person at the breaker panel know who might be working on it, how to contact them, and let them know when the work is expected to be completed.

Why does no one ever talk about the “sucked into a vacuum” myth.
The delta p between simulated earth atmosphere inside a spacecraft and space is 14psi.
That’s 1 atmosphere to 0 atmospheres. The air rushing out from behind you would not exert a great enough force to rip you off your feet from across the room and drag you out, especially if you’re in artificial gravity. I can imagine that if you were standing by the airlock you would teeter off your feet slightly but a Leviathan being dragged into space?!

They could honestly even go above and beyond in this world with the line based Holographic Locater found in RIGs to point out your objectives. They could have such projectors built into rooms and in the event of an emergency, a line is projected to lead the way to the nearest evacuation route.

Don’t know if you’ll see this. But 46:26 is explained in the spinoff rail shooter Dead Space Extraction. A Wii game that was later ported to PS3. Basically, the story follows a small group of colonists and crew aboard the ishimura attempting to escape amidst the start/middle of the outbreak. To do so, one of the characters ventures out to disable the ADS cannons so the defense system doesn’t target their escape shuttle. Hence why Isaac had to come in and recalibrate them after the fact.
Dead Space Extraction also features a closer look at the Aegis VII Colony (like the concurring prequel comics) and both the vent systems on the Ishimura, as well as a waste disposal sub-level (plumbing sewers etc.). So make with that info what you will.

14:15 Maybe we're making the assumption that humans don't already know all those languages. Maybe Chinese is a better language for communicating culinary items while English has become the language of engineering? I like the way The Expanse universe has taken this on. Where the Belters (humans who grew up and live the majority of their lives in micro-gravity) have developed a cant that is basically an amalgam of all the most technologically advanced cultures that pushed out into space first (English, Chinese, Indian, German, Spanish, Italian... etc.)

    • @RocketSurgn_
      @RocketSurgn_ หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Belter language is a single language, a creole language like multiple current day languages. So a stable language that developed naturally over time from a combination and simplification of multiple parent languages, probably with a simpler/non stable pidgin language first that slowly stabilized into a single common language as people who spoke those different languages natively learned to communicate. Over a base of English being presumed to still be a fairly common language of business, so it had the heaviest influence (and obviously for the show it had to be mostly understandable to the broadest audience possible). You wouldn’t see sets of information consistently sticking to one language for entire thoughts/messages, by their nature creole languages are a mixture throughout.
All of that said because the belter creole is one of a lot of reasons I love that show. Many of them admittedly more physics/engineering related as the screen name probably suggests.

I'd guess they once had more than one tram on the ship but the one we access is likely an emergency one that still works. As there is enough parts of the ship locked off to us that also have other characters moving about with them making me think we just see either the main maintenance tram or a emergency one used for the event of a disaster that runs on its own line that doesn't often get used compared to what I assume would be a larger system with a few more trams for the main transport of the Doctors, scientists, miners & security forces as well as the bridge crew & officers basically all the people who aren't the engineers & such use likely a kinda larger tram that can hold more people as the one we use in game only could hold like 4 people & maybe a bit more if you crammed it but it defiantly could carry tools & stuff as well. I remember a part in the original game where you pass through an area that looks like it once held two tram lines round the area where you need to repair the tram to progress at the start. Also I think the second game also implies this. There likely also is slower ways around the ship which most people would be using as I'd assume only the engineers & stuff have to take the long trips across the ship on the regular. I also want to add about the grimy industrial look it kinda makes sense for the ship to have as well its the mining ship that's very old & on its last mission before its going to be made into a museum or scrapped. So its not like I'd guess its much more than an old ship falling apart. Like in its hayday it probably didn't have all these exposed panels & stuff but now that its so old & things break so often the engineers just go like F*ck it it'll break soon enough again & doing the whole panel thing is time consuming. Also the ships damage from the current alien zombie situation could help cause more of this. I do like it as a old falling apart ship. But the colony is another thing which kinda seems unsafe for what it is.
Edit: on the centrifuge. At least in the original game it made sense why Isaac had to take such a dangerous gamble by passing the area where the arms where moving. You could see that some Necromorph growth was over the area & I think part of it had broken off making the area have saftey in the before times but since you don't have time you've just gotta start the thing up instead of how in a time when they didn't have monsters trying to kill them they could make a makeshift bridge to help the person reach the button & then get back over & later on when they are safe they could turn it off & rebuild the walkway. I guess the remake missed that detail leading to a nonsensical area.

32:51 it is however handy for when you are letting your suit dry after use.
35:50 Lighting can actually be very important on a vessel, especially if you dont have your own with you. When the lights on a ship go out you cant even see your hand infont of you. But there should be two separate lighting circuits, normal and emergency/vital that has a lower power draw.
46:00 theoretically, could the laser be reflecting back off the the dust and debeir created by destroying the asteroids and the propellent gasses following the projectiles?
51:31 Could the Hallway be held at positive pressure, that could explain why the gas isn't evacuating into the hallway (However it would imply the gases gets pushed to the opposite side of the room i guess)
56:00 This ship looks to be primarily engineering/ machinery rooms. It's common to have low railings and exposed machinery. There are only two places on the ship that I was on that was highly guarded/protected and they were the hydraulic rams responsible for moving the control surfaces. Heck you could freely crawl under the main shaft while it was spinning far faster then something that size has the right to be spinning. (watched a mad lad dryhump the shaft while we were going near max speed.)

I always love these kinds of videos because it reminds me of how, in the scifi scene, historically people have always known about how things were going to be years before they ever happened. 2001 A Space Odyssey comes to mind in how they had face-to-face long distance communication, tablets, and the like. Eventually, humanity's going to space to colonize other planets and mine for resources. Eventually, humanity's going to figure out gravity and zero-point energy/the unified field. I always find it cool how people are already thinking ahead about things like this. Solid video, nice job.

There is a point that i wanted to make about the grav-ball court that you talk about later in the video. All of your points about it are very correct but one use case that you overlooked was its usefulness for training people to move in zero gravity, in many books that I've read, while still being used for exercise and play, antigravity sports are also used to train space movement and painful impacts with walls/ceilings/floors are great learning tools.

If a franchise decided to take every field, i.e. engineering, within its universe seriously while also having events like dead space happening, I think it would make for a very compelling and thought provoking atmosphere, especially if they nailed their presentation like dead space did.

For the 'Atmospheric Shields' at 29:40ish, I think it's very plausible that it does indeed make use of the unified field theory; Specifically, Stasis. A very finely controlled stasis field applied only to small particles with enough strength to resist the natural atmospheric pressure being restrained would of course be strong enough to contain the stagnant/mostly unmoving atmosphere of the area- But would Not be strong enough to halt objects of larger mass that has force actively being applied to it, ie, a person walking and pushing off with their foot as they step into it.
Similarly, but I think less plausibly due to atmospheric pressure, computer controlled stasis 'lasers' outlining the shield being produced could, hypothetically at least, re-form the field in real time to allow larger objects to pass while retaining the seal.

You’ve probably gotten this comment a lot (though I didn’t see any after a skim) but the largest nuclear detonation was 50 megatons, so a 12 megaton yield being 10 times larger is pretty inaccurate.
