There is a lot of talk out there about the Green M&M. She's gone through some... iterations, but that is NOT what we are talking about today. At least, not the most important thing. What I'm looking to see is if green M&Ms can help you get LUCKY! Think of this as the spiritual successor to our chocolate episode a while back.

I think that maybe another thing could be that seeing M&Ms with an assortment of colors provides the participants with comfort knowing that there is a variety despite there being no actual flavor difference among all the colors. Being given only one color of M&Ms makes it seem as though they are bland or all only one flavor and won’t be as satisfying.

I know that if I were in a study, and a bowl of singular-colored candy was presented to me, I would be distracted by trying to figure out what the study was trying to discover, whereas being in a room with a bowl of normal distribution candy colors, I would assume they were just there as a bonus snack to help the subjects focus on the task at hand. Maybe that's a future theory too, "does eating while doing a task help you focus?"

When I was young I recall reading that British soldiers in WW2 would keep their green Smarties (a candy-coated chocolate like M&Ms) to throw into the grass when they returned home. Why? So their kids would spend the afternoon trying to find them, while dad was inside making up for lost time with mom.
Tried to find a reference online, but can't find one. But as M&Ms are inspired by Smarties, the connection is there - assuming some author wasn't lying to me!

I recently noticed something about peanut m&ms and thought you might be interested in reviewing. I had a family sized bag and noticed all the m&ms were wonky shaped, even some doubles and one missing a peanut. If you buy a small bag like from a gas station, they are all perfectly shaped. My theory is they use the perfect ones for the small bags, impulse buys, and they use all the wonky rejects for the large family bags.

Food Theory: food expiration dates! My partner and I had a conversation about when to throw the milk out and when it exactly goes bad. I know there’s a difference between “sell by” and “expiration” but how long after the date does it take for bacteria to grow?

    • @Oberkiller
      @Oberkiller ปีที่แล้ว +22

I like your suggestion in regards to bacteria growth and don't have an answer about that, but here's a fun fact: sour milk won't make you sick. Sure, once it's gone sour and curdled it's disgusting, that's definitely the suggested point at which you should probably stop trying to drink it. But drinking sour milk won't give you food poisoning or anything like that.

also, placebo is a thing. believing the green m&M's actually make you feel "something"

    • @gogauze
      @gogauze ปีที่แล้ว

This is one of the most understated and misunderstood things in pop science. Placebo reactions are a massive part of everyone's daily life, and they significantly impact our quality of life.
The whole reason you give a placebo pill in the identical shape and color, in the exact same way, to a control group in a medical study, is because the expectation of the thing can, in part or in full, be causal to the thing. We don't want a medicine to just be better than nothing, we want it to be better than our perceptions can manipulate.
A lot of folks think of the word as bad or dirty. It gets a lot of attention when something gets deemed to be "no more effective than a placebo," and folks who use or do those things don't respond well to being told the benefits they experience aren't real. The thing is, they probably are getting benefits.
Like, if you grew up with your parents telling you that orange juice makes you better when you're feeling sick, you are very likely to actually get better. No joke, it frequently shortens your recovery and blunts your symptoms if you believe that. But we know for a fact that there are zero objective benefits from drinking orange juice compared to water and a few calories. How can those two things both be true? Because we don't actually deal with objective reality as much as we think we do.
That's what science means when it mentions placebos. Your brain can take information and make your body do a bunch of things that don't seem like they should be possible. Those reactions are frequently belief based, and they do meaningfully help. They just aren't universal to every human.
This is really just the tip of this iceberg. If it occurred to you that negative things could happen in the same way, you're absolutely right. And the sheer number of things a placebo reaction can do are not presently calculable. But it's a lot, and the differences are significant.

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

    My favorite fact about M&Ms.
Eddie van Halen would mandate that a bowl of M&Ms be put in the back room of the venue exactly in the middle of the room and there would be NO brown candies, and this is item 295 out of 541 of setting up a typical van Halen concert.

Some European perspective, if it's of any help:
In my experience, we just don't use the "base" metaphors; we just say what we mean-- but we _are_ second-hand familiar with them because of American media. I just haven't experienced anyone using them sincerely/unironically.
I've never heard anyone claim the green M&Ms to have any particular properties; and so, prior to watching this episode, I had just assumed it was a psychological thing, relating it back to the Green M&M from the advertising.
If anything, the hot-ticket M&Ms over here (at least, in the UK) are the blue ones, because they disappeared from the market during... the 2000s, I think? Maybe the '90s?-- and when they came back, they made a HUGE deal out of it. Again, I think it had something to do with a connection being alleged between food-colouring and carcinogens.

    My theory:
A full bowl of vari coloured M&Ms could induce a sense of security thanks to the perception of choice. Participants may also have been in a better mood because the garish colours made them think it was a party and thus socially appropriate to let loose.
Meanwhile, single coloured M&m bowls could have induce a manufactured sense of scarcity, which would make people hesitant to date since they wouldn't have the resources to finish the seduction process.
All in all, I think the lighting results are polluted with the sugar results and social perception.

Here’s my theory: The bowls of the same colored candy definitely had something to do with color theory (maybe not all but at least a little). But my guess is that they also made the brain a little confused. You see, when you see an ad for m&m’s you see (usually) see all the colors, and so you kind of get used to it, anytime you see a bowl of same colored m&m’s its for a reason- its there to prove some sort of point (like in on the desk of a receptionist or something, hopefully that makes sense). But in conclusion it just doesn’t make sense to our brain is some way, like the uncanny valley of candy.
Though I did see a theory on here saying something about the fact that they’d be suspicious is they walked in a room for an experiment and saw a bowl of same colored m&m’s there, they might wonder a little more what the experiment is about and get distracted. I could see this making sense in a way.

3:23 in Dutch "scoren" (to score a goal in football or another sport) means getting a girl
"I've scored" means "I've gotten a girl" (depending on the context and group of people this can go from dating, kids, to adult fun time, when talking with "the lads")
we probably have some other stuff to, but we usually use other strange words like "washing machine" for a specific kind of kissing and if you do that with a girl you're seen as cool
The whole "sports ladder" is not a Dutch thing as far as I'm aware..... except "scoren"

Here’s an idea to further iterate on this experiment: since you now know that a mix of colors produces better results than a bowl of just one colored candies, try running the experiment again with mixed bowls each time, but with two bowls where the mix has been artificially bloated with extra red or green M&Ms respectively. Consider doing the same for the other candy colors as well, just to see if there are any unexpected contenders.

Alternative hypothesis: the bowls of same colored candies doesn't allow the brain to rest. Think of how an addict gets diminishing returns after repeated drug use. The bowl of mixed candy gives the brain variation and makes those bursts of "love" chemicals more potent.

If it was any other candy out there that comes in one color, it wishing face the same
      Issues.
Then again, I’m not a fan of multicolored foods in the first place. So you might be more inline with the world for all I know.
