The best part about the OG run of The Magic School Bus was the segment at the end where the show would have "kids" call in to call the show out and the producer would essentially say, "look, this is a 20 minute show meant for kids, we can't do everything right in that time for that audience, the word magic is in the title, just go with it."

That scene with Arnold traumatized me as a kid. The first time I saw it, I straight-up cried, and my classmates had to reassure me that Arnold had survived. A few years later, we watched it _again,_ and I didn’t cry, but I _did_ have a panic attack because I had forgotten how horrific Arnold’s frozen head looked, resulting in the classmates to either side of me having to calm me down.

Same here, I first watched the episode on TH-cam as a kid, and the immediately turned off the computer and proceeded to have nightmares about that scene. I only found out what happened to Arnold a decade later, and was surprised that it had actually happened on the show, and wasn't a false memory produced by my twisted little mind.

The thing is, he always says that, yet he never actually does it. It’d be funny if they had some episodes where Arnold wasn’t in it, because he actually stayed home.

Dan does deserve a raise, since we often hear him fill in for Matt. But ngl I did not how big the great red spot had gotten, the thought of a planet sized hurricane is both cool and terrifying at the same time!
I feel like it’s worth pointing out the fact that it looked like it took Arnold basically no effort to take his helmet off implies that all of the kids would’ve been long dead from oxygen leakage within like 5 minutes.

This show NEEDS more Film Theory episodes. There's so much to unpack! Does Ms. Frizzle teach any other kids? Are there any other teachers in this school? Where did Bus come from? Was it a regular school bus at one point? If so, how did Ms. Frizzle give it life? What are the physical ramifications of all the transformations the kids going through?
maybe Ms. Frizzle is a time lord and the bus is a TARDIS. Would certainly explain the ability to keep the kids alive through it all

The really fun part about Magic School Bus, is that some of this stuff they actually explain after the episode. With the producer explaining to kids over the phone and explaining how they skim over some information to fit the 20 minute runtime. It's frankly genius and really respects the intelligence of kids watching

I love this show it’s hilarious
Yeah, I remember how each episode had a final animated segment where they would basically answer critical questions about how they presented things. Sometimes they acknowledged embellishing things, other times they would counter a likely objection from a viewer. All in all, interesting stuff rarely seen in TV shows.

As a kid they made us watch this episode and I was TRAUMATIZED. For some reason the way he looked when he took off his helmet haunted me for years. 💀

I personally believe that before any of the adventures we ever see (because the kids all act like stuff like going to space is normal with Ms. Frizzle) Ms. Frizzle gave them the rundown that basically says: “Btw, the bus makes us all immortal whenever we use magic. We’re not invincible and could get sick after but it’s not like we’ll die.” Because they would have all died 10 times over per episode.
Considering their school bus is a short bus they are all probably high as kites from the meds she's been giving them in the Kool-Aid :)

The scariest part about everything is that Miss frizzle and trusted about seven children to find her in the endless vacuum of space. Infinite darkness and infinite cold with a limited supply of air and she thought " Oh this would be the perfect time"
Ikr? Ms. Frizzle honestly has been pretty recklessly irresponsible for most of the show, like when she’s like “I wonder if this bus insurance policy covers dino damage” right when you can see the teeth of a T-rex literally tearing through the bus with the kids screaming inside.
TBH, I always approached The Magic Schoolbus much like the Tardis in that its abilities extend past the edge of the bus. In the same way that the Tardis can mask your clothing and language to help appear normal anywhere in time and space, the magic schoolbus was ALWAYS in control of what was going on, down to putting protection over the students and the frizz outside of the bus.
Frizzle is always so confident that everything is going to be ok, because the truly understands the power of the bus.

You forgot a few times that because it is a magic school bus with undefined logic, any time they didn't leave the bus, they would be fine. (ex, for the sun they don't have to deal with the radiation and stuff because they never left the bus.)
Honestly, while with Mat i feel like i'm sitting in school with a very awesome teacher who actually keeps me very interested in the subject, with Dan i feel like i'm sitting at the couch at home attentively listening to a friend.
Matpat is the super nerdy friend, but Dan feels like a regular friend who just happens to know stuff

Now that I've seen someone else host film theory, I've realized how good matpat is with imbuing the content with energy and ...vigor. Okay, vigor isn't the most appropriate word, but that's what it feels like.

The good news is that Ms. Frizzell isn't ACTUALLY taking the students on these trips, the idea is that shes such a good teacher they feel like theyre really there. When Arnold takes off his helmet, it's really one of the students asking what would happen if you did do that.

As a kid, I loved Ms. Frizzle and wanted her as a teacher so bad, but as an adult, I question how she was allowed to keep her teaching license while constantly endangering her students lives and taking so many field trips with zero permission 😅

@@LokiEristhe bus isn’t magic. Frizzle is a demon. Liz is a lesser demon and The bus itself is the soul of a bus driver who drank and drove and killed all the children on a field trip. The kids are never harmed because the demon is taking them on fun adventures as a method to torture the bus driver for his negligence.

I still say the weirdest episode was when Phoebe got turned into a plant so she could be the giant bean stalk for their play of Jack and the Beanstalk. Ms. Frizzle literally turned one of her students into a plant!

That one of the few episodes that always stuck with me. Probably top of the list though. I still have dreams relating to that episodes plot.
There was an episode where the kids got put into salmon eggs, and salmon fertilized them.
they also all turned into sea animals in one episode. and bees in another. it actually happens rather frequently!

I think the real scariest thing about this is that it clearly shows how powerful the magic in the magic school bus it, I feel like that’s really what we should be afraid of.
One day the sequel series on Netflix could do an episode on neuroscience, and they just go to an AI-overridden future to demonstrate how a neural network is constructed in a mimicry of the brain. And the bus could just become a warmech to fight a walking factory.

What’s crazy to me is that this is the only episode that I really remember. I even remembered that Arnold’s glasses turned purple when he froze after the helmets. Even remembered the phone call from the aliens when they got back to the classroom. Thank you for this!

That shows how powerful the magic of the magic school bus is. The magic would also extend to anything the bus created, like the space suits and sun visors. And since only magic must defeat magic, the kids were fine

she is a timelord (or a version of soufle girl, unable to die or even River song) and the bus is a tardis.
The tardis produces a protective field around itself. Can change its form, has an interrior that has own rules .... it just makes sense.

That space episode is one of only 2 MSB episodes I have *always* remembered specifically (the other is the human body episode in Arnold) my whole life. The bit with Arnold freezing at the end was legitimately horrifying to me when I was a kid; and as I got older, I'm both surprised they got away with airing something that dark, but also impressed that they didn't shy away from legitimately how dangerous that would be irl, and making sure kids know that.
Those two episodes seem to stand out in my memories as well. I wonder why. I can certainly think of a few more if necessary, but those two really left an impression. Perhaps it's that element of danger present. However, wasn't there an episode where they infiltrated an ant colony? What if they all got eaten by ants? That's seems plenty dangerous!

As much as I agree with the fact Ms Frizzle is the teacher in charge of these kids safety and is to blame. I would like to point out that the Jupiter gas into the bus blame is on Arnold’s cousin, Janet. Janet put the rest of this class (a class she isn’t even a part of) into more danger than necessary for her whole souvenir collection

You probably should have mentioned WHY Arnold took off his helmet. For those who don't know, Arnold's cousin Janette was on the trip with his class. She was the one who tried to get evidence that they were in space. Arnold did not want to get proof, so yeah. Arnold cares less about his safety, than making sure the bus isn't discovered to be magic. (Wow that's commitment)
The fact that matt losing his voice didn't effect the uploads is one of the reasons why i love these channels, kudos to dan for bringing us the same lovable content that matt brings

As the animated representation of the show’s producers once stated, “it’s a MAGIC school bus” 😂 but seriously growing up is realizing that Arnold was right
9:06 I always remembered that while the kids end up in scary situations, Miss Frizzle was always close enough to push a button on the bus to do something to get them out of the situation and they were always safe when they wandered off away from the bus. This episode genuinely traumatized me when I watched it in class as a kid! Also since the class traveled to deep space and back in under a day, it’s possible they would have had to travel near the speed of light which might have caused time to warp and bend a bit. It’s likely a year or so may have passed on earth while the kids were in class for a day.

5:29 I feel compelled to say here, that, although I’m sure it just had to be simplified for the sake of the time, molecules do not “release heat” upon collision, per say- they can transfer energy in the form of heat (their kinetic energy) between one another, but the collisions are not converting their kinetic energy into heat. It doesn’t help that heat usually specifically refers to transferred thermal energy, and not the the thermal energy itself, but still; the wording used makes it sound like kinetic energy was somehow being converted to thermal energy, while in reality, the kinetic energy just is the thermal energy, with heat being the energy transferred between two systems of different temperature (average kinetic energy). I don’t blame you for not getting into the weeds of it in this video, and I apologize if this comment sort of sounds like disorganized rambling (because I’m tired, and it is), but it felt hard to leave it be. All watching the magic school bus did for me as a kid was make me think about how crappy our field trips were. One of our 'trips' was a walk to the lake. We werent allowed to touch the water or anything. We walked there, and walked back.

I'm so glad I had some good field trips. We went to six flags, camping where we could do zip lining and horseback riding, we went to Wisconsin Dells for the weekend, we took a lot of field trips out of state actually. Good times.

You guys should do a follow-up theory for this! I think I heard a theory years ago about Miss Frizzle's class being clones of her original class, since they would obviously die a few times on field trips. It was a theory used to explain a few minor details about the show including the helmet scene. I'd love to see someone else cover it!
