Media has always been about "clickbait" since the very beginning. It's about getting views on whatever platform the media is on, newspapers, videos, live broadcasts, etc. The only difference now is that it has become increasingly easier to fact check these stories thus making it even more unacceptable for such shameless behavior in supposedly professional and trusted platforms.
@@quoteclone sensational, yes. But the feedback loop is effectively instant now, as opposed to weeks or months, so the outrage/interest needs to be kept high to retain views. For a more detailed explanation of *what* NyQuil chicken theoretically does to humans, I recommend ChubbyEmu's video on the same topic, if you like medical case-study informations. Let's be fair, here, though. The traditional media that MatPat talked about and showed in his video was entirely comedy pieces and Good Morning America daytime stuff. This wasn't real news discussing real events in detail, it was entirely entertainment stuff using "current events people are talking about". MatPat probably should've pointed out the difference in the video. Heck, I've seen some of those shows outright tell people not to use them as their main source of news, as they're meant for entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending this kind of stuff, but it is important to note that these shows aren't held to the same journalistic standard as real reporting, and we shouldn't lump the two together.
What I hate about this situation is that the media is blaming it on young people. HOW? A 16 year old can't just buy chicken and cook it in medicine without their parents noticing, and even if the did they would have to get money for both without raising any eyebrows

Chubbyemu already made a video about the implications and discussed that this "challenge" wasn't actually popular until the FDA paper where they gave the meme as an example of things you shouldn't do with nyquil. Reminds me of the tide pod challenge. I remember seeing some TH-cam vids on it and they were informative and warned against it. Then I was watching the actual news, they hyped it up as a challenge and then went to ads. They obviously mentioned it was dangerous a minute or two into it after coming back from break. I thought that if I were a kid I would probably do it if I had seen the news hype it up like they did.
THANK YOU! This needed to be addressed. Every time the news mentions a “challenge” it just gets brought up in the wrong way. Causing more people to end up doing it because it’s on TV and popular🤦♀️
The thing that pisses me off the most about this is now that the news is displaying this ‘challenge’ to so many people, people are 100x more likely to try it since so many people have seen it now. Good job media, you did it again!
9:15 As someone who was hospitalized for 4 days because of Clonidine overdose it is extremely painful to see people turn overdosing(and other trends involving medicinal products) into this silly little internet challenge. @@0816M3RC did you not watch the video? Matpat literally says that the whole joke is making fun of the hypothetical dumbass to be dumb enough to do this. Its a meme. A parody of a 4chan thread.
when "older" people are on a wider platform and misrepresenting the stories, that's how a lot of "younger" people can be stereotyped against. there are definitely a bunch of dumb ones, just watch any of the random street question videos, but the majority at least have the common sense to understand satire vs a real trend and (hopefully) don't follow such stupidity
What's funny tho is that there are also a lot of dumb and stupid shits in a lot of the older generations' time as teenagers, the same way thing as ours. We just don't know or can't find it now since the Internet haven't been invented yet or it has been but not used for the general public.

I was a in journalism in highschool. I was taught how important it was to be accurate in my reporting. I’ve never understood how media has become the way it is now. Do you guys think you could do a theory video on that?
I would just like to say that I was doing an assignment on the TED talk "The Danger of a Single Story" and I was able to cite some of your videos (including this one) so thanks to- idk who is part of your team but thanks to everyone who worked on this!
Gosh darn, we just watched that literally today.
"The difference between medication and poison is the dose" has always been a quote i live by in terms of this kinda stuff, stay safe people of the internet, yall need to
MatPat just wants all the nyquil chicken to himself
Love how he ends it with “that’s not a theory, that’s a fact” lol
I once use a Danish cherry wine to marinate chicken. It tasted great on the chicken but this episode reminds me of it because the wine by itself tastes like cherry nyquil.
I don't think I've ever heard of any of those challenges, probably since I stay off of the social media those are likely spread from. But it's good to hear MatPat speaking out about these sorts of things, especially when it's clear the mainstream news apparently won't.

Soak and cook your chicken with pickle juice!!! Sounds gross but it’s so surprisingly amazing!!!
Hello my fellow pigeon. And yes, it's amazing. The lactic acid in the pickle juice helps make meat more tender. It's got an extra little funk and tanginess thanks to the fermentation process the cucumbers.
@@pigeon1923 us pigeons know how to cook fellow birds.
This is why I love this channel, you can find the new challenges based on food that people are doing that are basically lethal/fatal and you're able to tell the world why they shouldn't be doing these things, very smart
I feel like it should just be common sense based on the fact that medicine is not food
What?? That's what this entire video was speaking AGAINST!
did you even watch the video???
This video deserves a clap and a half. Matpat out here doing the Lords work!
@don't be surprised

Edit after watching: This video took a turn I didn't expect and I commend MatPat for being brave enough to talk about this.

If I weren’t for this guy, I would’ve been eating blue chicken everyday. Thank you MatPat
Funny enough I made blue chicken some years ago for Halloween, but with edible blue. It looked really gross, some spots became greenish 🤢😝
I love when people make fun of the video without actually watching it :)
Did you watch the video?
Cool seeing character development with matpat going from calling these types of things with the news conspiracy theories to understanding them
