El Cotillo Walk and a Big New Development

  • I took a walk around El Cotillo Fuerteventura on a lovely sunny afternoon to show how busy it is, what is new and what's not and to give those that love El Cotillo but cannot travel here a "fix".
    There is a new pizza restaurant in the old harbour and El Callao has changed hands (which is a shame as we liked it there) and it is now an Italian restaurant. This restaurant also has the tables down on the quay in the old habour, below the Vaca Azul (the Blue Cow).
    The ruin that is being rebuilt and extended on the north side of the old harbour will also be a restaurant. That is close to the Dragon's Egg rock.
    The Coral Cotillo Beach hotel is still closed and just along from there they have started a large new development which I believe is going to be a hotel or aparthotel. I made a video when planning permission for this was applied for - • Proposed new hotel in ... (UPDATE: A picture has gone on the site showing it will be apartments with a pool)
    Too much development, particularly of hotels, will totally change (and spoil) El Cotillo.
    I stopped walking at the start of the northern beaches. If you want to continue the walk to Torino's Beach Bar then you can watch this video - • El Cotillo beach walk ...

    Thank you so much for this video. The last Time I was in El Cotillo was in 2016. I enjoyed these stays so much in this calm, lovely and still wild spot. I feared this one could be spoiled in the future. Indeed, there are some changes. I hope there won't be too many.
    It was a great pleasure to walk with you.
    Have a nice day.😊

    Weather looks great JP ... and you've even got gentle sea breezes for a change! Just beautiful :) I love El Cotillo, and have happy memories of eating at Torino's. Shame about the noisy development of the aparthotel or whatever it's going to be, but once they've finished breaking the rocks out it should hopefully become a bit quieter. The pontoons at the harbour have really improved it!

    JP, what do you make of this? Today the Cabildo say there are 56 cases of covid in total on the island, but there are104 in Puerto alone. The Cabildo now say they are worried the Island will stay in level 3 or may even go up to level 4. The old cheese wharehouse in Risco Prieto has now has had over 200 migrant boat people moved there from the EMI because many have tested positive for Covid.
    The Cabildo do not have the power to do the following, but they are anyway going to open another wharehouse in Risco Prieto to try to house more close contacts of these infected people, as they are currently free to roam about on the island. The possible extra spread of the virus is what concerns them because of the consequences to the island economy.
    What has happened again today? You have probably guessed, another boat load has just arrived. Where will it end? Further to this the incidence in the Canaries is rising again despite the fact that Health are doing far fewer tests than a short while ago. Also I live on the route the Health Service helicopters take and they have been going to and from the hospital like a fiddler's elbow, taking patients to other islands to keep the hospital from being overwhelmed and also desperately trying to keep things below the threshold for level three or four.
    There are no surgeries being done except emergency or cancer ones. Many hospital appointments are by phone instead of personal. Both my wife and I have had this. Is all of this a con or just part of an epidemic?

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw that another boat with 58 on it has arrived (almost all young fit men again as usual - which the Guardian would report as being all women and children of course). It is hard to know what the real situation is with the lies the Cabildo is obviously telling. It is getting ridiculous, particularly as these boat people are free to roam around spreading it. They refer to them rescue missions when they go out and escort the boats but they are often going almost to the coast of Morocco to escort them here, rather than to the nearest coast (back to Morocco). As a friend says, they aren't providing a rescue service, it is a ferry service. So the authorities are complicit in bringing in boat loads of infected people which continue screwing up the lives of those that live here through continued restrictions.
      I too have only had telephone appointments with the hospital for the past year and my last appointment for February was put off until June (which will then probably be by phone again).

    Dear JP, thank you for the new V-Log about El Cotillo and the new development. I think the new hotel is bad news for El Cotillo. El Cotillo was always a place with a very special spirit. In my opinion, the place does not tolerate too much people. It is to be feared, that the El-Cotillo--spirit will disappear. That's too bad...... Your V-Log is an important chronicle about the changes over time. We're glad about every new report........ All the best for you and your wife. Norbert and Petra from Hamburg.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, I have just come home from Cotillo, I was there for 6 weeks staying at Benitez. You covered my morning walk, except I went up to the beach bar and back. Coffee and croissant at the french bakery on the way back.
    The house on the old harbour headland is nearly finished now, looking good.
    The refurbed hotel I believe is not going to be all inclusive when it reopens in August and as you say the new buildings are appts so all looking good.

Hopefully the noisiest work will be finished before our visit in November but there's plenty of space to get away from it. Only time will tell what the impact of another hotel will be. I get the impression, Cotillo is one big building site..rubbish dumped everywhere, walls needing repainting and repair. Much prefer Corralejo to be honest. .New Hotel will bring in more money, but some apartments will have no view. Hotel will have great views, and most likely its own pool. . Cotillo definitely needs more street planting, with nice palms and plants, to brighten up area.. Hotel with lots of shops, looks like a nice place.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see that it may seem that way Gary but it isn't really like that. Cotillo has always appealed to people who want a quiet holiday, staying in an apartment and going out to eat in a restaurant at night. But too many large hotels will totally change that and if the hotel is all-inclusive it will bring in very little money to the village, just people to crowd the beaches.

    It all looks a but run down, some of the buildings just need a simple coat of paint, the new hotel, or apartment can only improve the look of the place judging by the footage. Beaches do look very nice there though and it doesn't appear to be that windy, is it a sheltered spot on the island?

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      El Cotillo has always been a quiet, quant, old fishing village that managed to retain it's charm, even with some development. Filling it full of swanky upmarket buildings will just spoil it. Of course it will still attract tourists, but a different kind of tourist, which is a shame as there are plenty of other resorts for those people to choose. The beaches are lovely, with the wilder beaches to the south and the sheltered lagoon beaches to the north. It is sheltered sometimes, depending on the wind direction. Thanks for watching.

    I didn’t go to El Cotillo this March, because I heard from a previous video of yours that there was loud road works going on. It’s a shame for the businesses right along that new hotel construction and those apartments behind that new build. Also, what aout the empty Coral Hotel? Have you noticed that some vloggers don't seem to realise, or don't want it to be known, that even though the Spanish State of Alarm ends on 9th May and local areas can decide most of their own Covid restrictions, one that isn't included is the wearing of masks. On 30th March a new law was passed for the new normality and among other things it continues the mandatory wearing of masks after 9th May. Local Councils can't drop this because it is a National Law. They seem to be here for some time yet.

      @@JPinFuerteventura As far as I can see the only bit that won't apply is the use on beaches when sunbathing or swimming and using outside when in the country, which seems to have been put in by mistake as the law was rushed. This was a big bone of contention with all communties and it was agreed it is OK by the Government, but the rest stay the same as before. Local communities can't overrule the rest, it is state law, as are compulsory PCR tests from the UK. The Canaries tried to overrule this and allow lateral flow tests but were slapped down. I can't put links on here to show all this as they will disappear.

      @@johndrew1407 Yes, that was the part I was referring to that was basically the only difference between what we already had and what they proposed. I don't suppose anyone was sacked for making such a ridiculous error. I have given up expecting common sense from government rule-makers so expect masks to stay until the revolution happens.

    Hi good question. I think it is bad to build another hotel. I have been living in a touristic area in Lignao Sabbiadoro (Northen Adriatic sea in Italy) since 2008 and believe me, more hotels are on the long sea coast worse is due to the flooding cheap tourists. It is not a pleasure living. Very good video :)

    Thanks for the video JP, I love Cotillo, great rugged coastline, loads of varied beaches and the the town itself has character and small town vibe/feel to it.... For now...
    Guess it's inevitable that plot was going to be developed at some point.
    Big hotels do nothing for me, my holiday hell. You're right, the developers don't care.. Its all about the cash.
    Appartments would be better, as hopefully anyone staying in them would likely spend more money in the local restaurants, shops and bars, than people staying in an all inclusive hotel.

Next thing you know the place is full of tourists and then everyone else starts doing the same. It becomes popular and then it will destroy itself. I hate social media.
