In Australia, we have four (4) different football codes that are played. Rugby Union (this video you are watching) - Rugby League (similar to rugby union with some different rules) - Australian Rules Football (a combination of many sports in one) - Soccer (Football). There is no protective gear worn in these sports. The soft headgear worn by some players has limited protection.
To introduce you to two of these football codes, I have included video links for both Rugby League and Australian Rules Football.
Rugby League (NRL) is played between 17 teams from the States of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and a team from New Zealand. Australian Rules Football (AFL) is played between 18 teams from the States of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia. I have included a video What is AFL - which explains the rules of the game and takes a while to understand.

This is an old video and many tackles shown (tackling a player who is in the air, piledriving, tackling in the air) can result in immediate sending off and suspension from playing for a period of time. Concussion is a major concern at the moment and some of the tackles shown would result in the player having to take time off the field for an assessment.
The men’s World Cup is happening at France later this year and should provide some good games.

The "wedgie" at 5:00 was because the defender, Chris Latham, was trying to carry the attacker into touch (with the ball) so there would be a 'lineout' with the throw-in going to Latham's team.
Later you see evidence of how difficult high passes are for players to take because it leaves them so vulnerable to heavy tackles.

  • @stuartcollins82
    @stuartcollins82 ปีที่แล้ว +7

In football the padding and helmets often give a false sense of security. People go in really hard with bad technique because they think they're safe. You'll find Rugby teams are heavily drilled on how to tackle properly to keep themselves safe, keep their heads in the right place. There's a big emphasis on the tackler keeping the tackled player safe. You have to wrap arms around them, you're not allowed to tip them so they land on their heads/necks, no tackling in the air, etc. A lot of the clips in this video were fouls, fair challenges that looked worse than they were, or unfortunate incidents. Also older clips are a bit more brutal as a lot of these tackling rules have come into effect over the last 10 years.
extra comment about the shoulder challenges in this clip, these were absolutely wrong, and are 100% considered fouls these days. Several players overused their shoulders, and should honestly have been arrested for assault because of it, as it's 100% done to hurt the other player (looking at you Sonny Bill Williams)

He has a full leg cast for 6 weeks, well he would have done if a friend had not crushed the cast with his car, thanks to the cast my bfrinds car had a imprint (full leg) on his cars wing for ages. 2 cars damaged my bros leg ok.

    Some tackling laws:
    You're not allowed to
    1. tackle a player without the ball. Fractionally late is normally allowed
    2. tackle a player on or above the shoulder line
    3. tackle a player who is in the air
    4. tackle a player without at least attempting to wrap your arms around him
    5. tackle a player and lift him through a 90 degree angle (spear tackle)
    A ball carrier may
    1. fend off a player with his hands
    2. barge into defenders provided he doesn't lead with his forearm or elbow and hit the defender above the shoulder line
Depending of the seriousness of the offence these could result in a penalty, a yellow card (off for 10 minutes) or even a red card (off for the rest of the game and a potential ban for one or more games)

Just a quick summary from a referee:
First of all, this was a good video to react to as it was actually mostly legal hits.
And now to the contact rules (actually called laws in rugby). There aren't really that many things to know about what's legal or illegal. You can't take out a player in the air (fair contest for the ball where contact happens is ok though!), you can't obviously take out a player without the ball (finishing a tackle that you were already committed to before the ball carrier gave away the ball is ok), contact above the shoulders (neck and head) is illegal and the tackler must always at least have the intention to wrap the arms around in a tackle.
As for the wedgie five minutes into the reaction, though not illegal (grabbing an opponents clothing is allowed) that play had other elements in it that should have been penalized. You can't dive on a player on the ground or prevent a player with the ball from getting up from the ground if there hasn't been a tackle (in this case there hadn't).

The last commenter (@Ozzcaddy) mentioned that this video is of rugby union, the first of the 4 codes of football he mentioned. I think it is mostly rugby union with a few hits from rugby league games. The wedgie part is funny but there is actually a logic to it beyond just trying to embarrass the guy. The tackler was trying to lift him into touch (get him out of bounds with the ball in hand) so that his team can have the advantage of ball possession in the next play. Hope you enjoy your journey discovering the game of rugby.

I played through the (brit equiv of) high school and into my second year of college... Back then, a lot of techniques that are illegal now were totaly fine. As a result I'm short of a few teeth (got my face stood on more times than I can count) and have permanent metalwork in my left forearm (padding the posts is a bit of a "modern thing" and getting tackled INTO them tended to hurt a bit. The one where they had to rivet my arm back together was the career-ender) :P
I wouldn't have missed it though. The game is a total blast to play, and the craic after the game, once both teams are off the field and all buddies again was amazing. I think the intensity of how we played it was one of the things made the sportsmanship so strong.
Sometimes, you just got no choice, this brick sh*thouse of an opposing forward is pounding down at you and you know he's going through you like crap through a goose... but you have a go at him anyway. Then you pick yourself up out of the dirt, do it again, and buy each other a couple of pints in the bar after the game.

Why the wedgie at 4:40 ? It's actually quite tactical : the touchlines in rugby work the opposite way from the NFL, and going out of bounds while in possesion of the ball results in a turnover.
As such, by wedgiing Blue 10 out of bounds, Purple 15 is trying to force a turnover for his team. And that's why Blue 10 releases the ball (or tries to) just before being out of bounds.

I understand why 'American Football' is so popular, especially in the age of television, (you need breaks for all the commercials). But some of the terms amuse me.
First there's the name, 'football', when there's only two times when a foot and the ball actually make contact.
Second is the term 'touchdown'. In rugby the ball actually has to be touched down, not so in AF.
As for rugby, in both codes, and in AF, the basic rules of pass back kick forward apply.

that wedgie! you don't see a lot of those in rugby, in fact this one clip is the only time I have ever seen this happen and I'm from a strong rugby nation, New Zealand and there are a few of these videos out claiming to be the full of the hardest hits or something similar...most of these don't seem that bad or hard at all...there are some shockers out there though 😅. . . thanks for the company

I’d gladly take a big hit front on at least you know what’s coming but the ones you don’t see hurt the most. Shout out to the league and union fans who play up the front with the big boys 💯

In short, the injury toll is high in both Rugby Union and Rugby League, certain positions are more combative and therefore have a higher attrition rate. The longevity of a player playing both professional codes is not long, those who achieve 100+ first class matches are the exception.

Yes you could really need to watch There are 2 different games of Rugby. Rugby League and Rugby Union they are similar but not the same the majority of the difference is what happens after the player is tackled. But the huge difference between both code of Rugby and US football in US Football you have an attacking lineup (team) and a defensive line-up (team). The Rugby There the one line-up dose both and the game goes for 2 x 40 minute halves with a 20 minute break for half time any other stop is only 2 minutes here and there for a penalty or a kick for goal after a try. So the players are pretty much well running for the hole 40 minute half have 20 minute break a and run for another 40 minutes.

I would say there are more injuries in American football as players lead with their heads and the only thing holding your head up with that helmet on is your neck, most rugby tackles even the hard ones lead with the shoulder, you can hit harder with the shoulder than the head.

American (and Canadian) football evolved from pre-codified Rugby. Rugby has the same basic objectives as North America Football. A touchdown is called a Try (and has to be grounded). There's Conversions after a Try. Penalty goals, field goals (via a drip kick).
Rugby split into 2 codes in the 1890s, along class lines over professionalism. The upper middle class stuck to amateurism with Rugby Union, the more globally popular of the two varieties. Union (which is the version shown in this video) only went professional in 1996, before that one could be banned for professionalism. Union has 15 players a side, meaningful Scrums, rucks, mauls, and Lineouts to bring the ball back into play when out of bounds. When in play, the ball is always contestable by either side. Rugby Union has a strong focus on the International game. New Zealand (All Blacks) is historically the most dominant nation, followed by South Africa (Springboks). Australia (Wallabies), England, France also dominant. Currently Ireland has reached the top of world rankings. Wales was dominant in the 70s. Argentina and to a lesser extent Japan have emerged to top ten nations these days. Later this year is the Rugby World Cup in France with the hosts and Ireland going in favourites, South Africa are the reigning world champions.
The other Rugby is Rugby League. League's traditional heartland was the industral North of England, specifically Lancashire and Yorkshire. The working class couldn't afford to play by the strict amateurism enforced by the Rugby Football Union. The northern english clubs split from the southern clubs in the 1890s to form the professional Northern Rugby Football Union, which became the Rugby Football League. As their version evolved away from Rugby Union, it began to be refered to as Rugby League.
'League is somewhat closer to North American Football, in that the ball is not contestable and their are 6 downs before the ball is turned over. Scoring is the same as Union, but the points allocated are different. There are 13 players a side instead of Unions 15 a side. There's no rucks, mauls, or lineouts. League has meaningless Scrums as a legacy to its past. League is much more a posession and running game, while Union has much more field position and territory kicking in open play.
League's international presence is pretty thin. Australia (Kangaroos) is utterly dominant. Historically team Great Britain was an equal rival. As GB fell away, New Zealand (Kiwis) emerged, and they compete well. France historically had periods of competitiveness, though French Rugby League never truly recovered from the French Rugby Union's treachery in WW2. With the latter convincing Vichy France's gov that League was a hostile foreign actor, so the sport was banned and all its assets given to French Rugby Union.
The annual interstate series between Australian states New South Wales and Queensland (State-of-Origin) is arguably the highest standard of Rugby played by either version. The Australian national team may be selected from the series but League internationals seldom reach the intensity. Comparatively equivilent Rugby Union is not played at the same intensity or ball handling skill (and i prefer Union).

Their two types of rugby shown with different rules if you notice some pile in on top of tackled player
This is ruby union they do that to protect the ball from opponents and remain in control of the ball
It only stops if a penalty or goes out of bounds then they scrum for penalty and make a line and throw the ball back in from side lines and both teams try to catch the ball for possession
In the other game it called rugby union and they have a 6 count tackle after 6 tackles you have to hand over the ball umpire will call 5 tackle so players know and only way they can maintain possession is kick the ball high and try to mark as you seen in clips and the other way is if opponents cause a penalty the umpire will star the 6 tackle count again regardless of how many previously counted or during a scrum which is the same in each but in this one when player tackle it stops and opponents have to retreat 10 mtrs then umpire calls play
The one where you see him carry guy over line was to get a penalty by taking him over side line then they scrum for ball you would've notice he released the ball back for team mate before he got carried out but they still lost ball as it rolled out so the carrying him out still worked
I played union where you try to protect the ball and pill over your player with ball it was call pile driving you only get a rest if goes out or penalty other was your takling or protecting the ball for 40 mins and games go 80 mins total other then injury time
They where the head padding by choice normally guy who been concussed several time or at higher risk
You where on the money with helmets as they tend to crash into each other more then without its not that common to be hit around head
As when I played you where trained to tackle the legs
But rule changes have changed that your only allowed to tackle between shoulder and hips now and the shoulder hit are out now
You can use shoulder but only if using arm to tackle at same time which then leave tackler open and can't hit as hard
I accurately suffered more knock injuries in Aussie rules football
    Cheers enjoy learning 🦘🇦🇺👍
